1. Introduction
1.1 Overview
The OM6040D is a low cost, flexible concept for implementing very high performance
MicroTCA™ solutions for industrial automation platform, image processing, and medical
applications. Based on a single tier AMC Double Module design, the OM6040D provides very
high performance configuration capabilities not found in conventional MicroTCA™ shelves.
The design concept is simple:
• Double Full-size, single tier, MicroTCA™ cube format
• Up to two integrated, pluggable, high power, low cost Power Supply Units (instead of high
cost PMs)
• Backplane design:
• Up to four Double, Full-size AMC modules
• Fabric support: Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet
• PCIe/sRIO point-to-point
• SATA point-to-point
• Power switching and fan control integrated in backplane
• Uses power planes for power distribution
• AMC module power switching as near as possible to backplane AMC connector
• One four-tongue MCH slot
• Pre-installed Kontron AM4910 MCH with 10 GbE Fabric interface
• Integrated cooling fans
The OM6040D supports up to four Double Full-size AMC Modules with various possible con-
figurations of AMC CPUs and peripheral devices. Up to two pluggable Power Supply Units are
integrated along with a Full-size AMC form factor MCH module slot. The backplane provides:
• Gigabit Ethernet Fabric interfacing
• Dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet Fabric interfacing
• Single x4 lane interfacing for either PCIe or sRIO between adjacent slot pairs (1-2 and 3-4)
• Two ports of SATA interfacing between adjacent slot pairs (1-2 and 3-4)
• Power switching support (PM functionality)
• Point-to-point clock distribution, fan control, and storage for FRU data
• Four regulatable fans provide forced-air cooling for the system.
1.2 Components
The OM6040D shelf is comprised of the following elements:
• Chassis
• Backplane
•Subrack
• Power Supply Units (PSU)
• Fan tray
• MCH: Kontron AM4910
The following figure illustrates the OM6040D shelf configured with two PSUs and one splitter
kit for the MCH slot. The chassis is provided with feet, the front pair of which are retractable,
for placement on a shelf or desktop (development environment) and special side mounting
brackets for cabinet mount installation.
