PAM-5
The Krell PAM-5 Preamplifier is a result of four years of research.
Research not only in electronics, but also in marketing. Krell
has developed sophisticated audio circuitry that meets our own
rigid electrical standards and above all sounds musical. The PAM-5
is so advanced that it will make a statement for years to come.
This instruction manual is intended to enhance the usage and en¬
joyment of your PAM-5.
UNPACKING
While unpacking your PAM-5, please inspect the unit carefully for
shipping damage. If all is well, proceed. Position PAM-5 in your
system. Plug in the power supply connectors on the back of your
preamp, lining up the red dots of the connectors with recepticals
on the rear panel and push gently until it snaps into place. Next
plug power supplies into the A.C. wall outlet. The green led on
the preamp and the red leds on the power supplies should light up.
If they do not, stop and contact your dealer or the factory.
HOOK UP
Your PAM-5 comes to you factory set for moving coil operation with
an impedance of 100 ohms. This impedance can be changed by adjust¬
ing switches marked S 1 and S3. To do so, remove the cover of
the preamp with the supplied alien key and refer to figure 1 and
the following table.

To change moving coil to fixed coil (moving magnet), adjust S 2;
refer to switch direction in figure 1. S 2 switch handles should
point to the right side for.moving coil and to the left side for
moving magnet.
TUNER
The tuner input on PAM-5 is the second input on the back panel.
It is set up to drive the high level section of the preamp direct¬
ly.
SELECTOR SWITCH
PAM-5's selector switch is used to choose the desired source.
Phono, Tuner, C.D. and Aux. It may also be used to turn the sig¬
nal off (completely muted). This can be accomplished by turning
the selector past the Phono position one step above, in a clock¬
wise direction.
COMPACT DISC INPUT
The C.D. input of PAM-5 is a true phase correcting input. It has
14 different adjustments for the various types of C.D. players.
If you refer to figure 1 and move switches S 4 and S 5 to adjust
for your specific C.D. player, the adjustments positions are as
follows;
Sony: 2-3-1 open, 8-4-5-6-7 on
Technics: 1-2 open, 3-4-5-6-7-8 on
Revox: 2-1 open, 3-4-5-6-7-8 on
Nad: 1-3-4-5-6-7 open, 2-8 on
Kyocera: 1-3-4-5-6-7 open, 2-8 on
Yamaha: 1-3-5-6-7 open, 2-4-8 on
Magnavox FD 30-30: 1-2 open, 3-4-5-6-7-8 on
Kyocera 910: 1-2 open, 3-4-5-6-7-8 on
If you do not find your brand of player above, you may call your
dealer of Krell for specific settings. If you are unable to con¬
tact either, use the following settings. If you have a Sony type
system, adjust to 1-2-3-8 open, 4-5-6-7 on. If you have the Phillips

type system, adjust to 3-5-6-7 open 1-2-8 on. These are the av¬
erage settings for the two systems.
AUXILIARY
The auxiliary input is the same as the tuner input and may be
used for a host of different applications.
TAPE MONITOR/SELECTOR SWITCH
This switch selects between the tape input and the input of choice
on the selector switch.
TAPE OUT
To tape with PAM-5, turn the selector switch on the front panel
to the position of the source you wish to record. The tape out¬
put is not affected by the position of the Tape Monitor/Selector
Switch.
OUTPUT
There are two outputs on PAM-5 which are capable of driving
more than one amplifier at the same time.
D.C. or A.C. COUPLING
Your PAM-5 comes to you set for D.C. coupled operation. If your
system is very sensitive to small D.C. voltage fluctuations,and
you are not using a Krell power amplifier, you may change to
A.C. coupling by moving the rocker switch S 6 to the open position.
BALANCE
The balance control on the PAM-5 is really a balance attenuator.
When you turn the control to the right, the speaker on the right
will reduce ini level. If you turn it to the left, the left
speaker will reduce in level. Note, rotation in the extreme
of either direction turns the channel off.

TIPS ON INSTALLATION
Do not put the power supply close to the preamplifier. Close
proximity could cause hum. This also holds true for the large
power supply transformers located in power amplifiers and some
turntables. Before making any connections to PAM-5 please make
sure the volume is turned all the way down. Our RCA connectors
are made of the highest quality materials available and made to
exacting standards. In fact, they are made to the original RCA
Standard. Lesser quality connectors can damage them. Please
check with your dealer if you have any doubts about your inter¬
connect's plugs, as the jacks are not subject to warranty if
abused.

RIAA tracking: greater than .1 db from 20 - 20KHz
Overload: lKHz 300mv phono stage
High level voltage swing: 8 volts rms
High level output impedence: 10 ohms
High level input impedance: minimum 10,000 ohms
Warranty: PAM-5 has a limited warranty for a period of
five (5) years from date of purchase.
