Thankyou for your purchaseof the .Krell HomeTheater StandardSurround
Preamp/Processor.
The HomeTheater Standard provides optimummusic and cinema soundtrack
reproductionquality throughKrell CurrentMode,discrete ClassA direct-coupled
circuitry, andbalancedoutputs on all six channels.Broadcastquality switching and
circuitry--including componentvideo, S-video, andcompositevideo--ensure
unmatchedvideo performance.Built-in DolbyDigital, DolbyPro Logic, andDTS
decodingmakethe HomeTheater Standard compatible with virtually any surround
soundsource, including digital videodisc(DVD)softwareanddigital television
broadcasts.
Dualzonecapability gives youa variety of configuration possibilities for whole-house
systems. A handheld remote control, RS-232and optional PHASTLink communications
ports, RC-5baseband,and12 VDCinput/output (12 V trigger) interface integrate the
HomeTheater Standard into any system. TheHomeTheater Standard’s flexible,
modulararchitecture allows you to upgradehardwareand software to accommodate
future surround soundformats and design enhancements.
Theowner’s reference manualcontains important information on placement,
installation, andoperation of the Krell HomeTheaterStandard.Pleasereadthis
information carefully. A thoroughunderstandingof these details helps ensure
satisfactory operation of andlong life for your HomeTheaterStandardandrelated
system components.
Definition of Terms
Followingare the definitions of key termsusedin your owner’sreferencemanual.
INPUT AND OUTPUT CONNECTIONS
Balanced
A symmetricalinput or output circuit that has equalimpedancefrom both input terminals
to a commongroundreference point. Theindustry standardfor professional andsound
recording installations, balancedconnectionshave6 dBmoregain than single-ended
connectionsandallow the use of long interconnect cables. Balancedconnectionsare
completely immuneto induced noise from the systemor the environment.

Multi-channel(DB-25)
Abalancedinput or outputcircuit that allowsfor the simultaneousconnectionof all
audiooutputsplusone5 VDC(5 Volt trigger) via a single cable.DB-25inputsand
outputsare becomingpopularfor connectinganaudio/videosurroundsoundprocessor
andpoweramplifiers, simplifying the integrationof the twocomponentsinto your
system.
Single-ended
Atwo-wireinput or outputcircuit. Usecarewhenusingsingle-endedconnectionsas the
groundconnectionis madelast andbrokenfirst. Turnthe systemoff prior to makingor
breakingsingle-endedconnections.Single-endedconnectionsare not recommended
for connectionsrequiringlongcableruns.
OPERATION
Off
Whenthe powerswitchonthe backpanelis placedin the downposition andLEDsturn
off, the componentis off.
Stand-by Mode
Whenthe HTSis connectedto ACpowerandthe backpanelpowerswitch is in the up
(on) position, the redstand-byLEDilluminates. Thisindicatesthat the componentis
stand-bymode,a lowpowerconsumptionstatus that keepsthe audioandregulator
circuits at idle. Krell recommendsleavingthe componentin the stand-bymodewhenit
is not playingmusic.
Operational Mode
Whenthe componentis in the stand-bymode,andyoupressthe powerbutton onthe
front panelor the powerkeyon the remotecontrol, the bluepowerLEDilluminates. The
componentis in the operationalmodeandis readyto play music.
TECHNOLOGY
Krell Current Mode
AproprietaryKrell circuit topologyin whichthe audiogainstagesof a component
operatein the currentrather thanthe voltagedomain.Thisuniquetechnologyprovides
the componentwith exceptionalspeedanda widebandwidth.
Krell HEAT
TheKrell termHEAT,or HighEndAudioTheater,is a designapplication incorporated
into Krell componentsto enhancemulti-channelhomeentertainmentsystems.AKrell
HEATsystemis anintegratedhometheater systemconsistingof a state-of-the-art Krell
preamp/processorandmatchingamplifiers that reproducetwochannelandmulti-
channelsourceswith audiophilesoundquality, placingthe audiencein the middleof a
lifelike environment.

Openthe box andremovethe top.layer of foam. Yousee these items:

Carefully removethe unit andaccessories from the box. Removethe foamendcaps
andprotective plastic wrapfromthe unit.

youmustship your HomeTheaterStandardin the future, repackthe unit in its originaJ

Krell HomeTheaterStandard

Placement
Beforeyouinstall the HomeTheaterStandardinto yoursystem,reviewthe following
guidelinesto choosethelocationfor thecomponent.Thiswill facilitate a clean,trouble-
freeinstallation.
TheHomeTheaterStandarddoesnot require anytypeof special rack or cabinetfor
installation. Forthe dimensionsof yourHomeTheaterStandardseeSpecifications, on
pages59-60.
TheHomeTheaterStandardrequires at least two inches(5 cm)of clearanceoneach
side andat least twoinches(5 cm)of clearanceaboveandbelowthe component
provideadequateventilation. Further,the HomeTheaterStandardrequiresat least
three inches(7 cm)of clearancebetweenother connectedcomponents.For
installationsinsidecabinetry,extraventilationmaybenecessary.
AC POWERGUIDELINES
TheHomeTheaterStandardhassuperbregulation anddoesnot require a dedicated
ACcircuit. Avoidconnectionsthroughextensioncordsor multiple ACadapters.High
quality 15ampgroundedACstrips areacceptable.Highquality ACline conditionersor
filters maybeusedif theyaregrounded.
Power Cord
TheHomeTheaterStandardshouldbeusedonly with the powercord supplied. Contact
yourauthorizedKrell dealer,distributor, or Krell beforeusinganydevicesdesignedto
alter or stabilize the ACpowerfor the HomeTheaterStandard.

Getting Started
READTHIS FIRST
Performthe following steps to makethe On-ScreenDisplay(OSD)viewableonyour
videomonitor. Thevideoformatandvideosignals of the HomeTheaterStandardand
the videomonitorneedto matchbeforethe OSDis viewable.Thevideoformatof the
videosignal canbeset to either NTSCor PAL.
Thefollowing table details the different videosignalsandvideoformatssupportedby
the HomeTheaterStandard:

on.Waitfor the HTSto initialize. Thenpressthe powerbuttononthe front panel.

Pressthe front paneldevicebuttonthat matchesboththe videoformatandvideo

Thisbecomesthe currently selectedvideosignal output.

4. Verify that the video monitor’s video signal input correspondsto the HomeTheater
Standardvideo signal output. Pressthe menukeyon the remotecontrol to verify
that the OSDis nowviewable on the video monitor. Thesystemconfiguration main
menuappears whenthe video format and video signals betweenthe HomeTheater
Standardandyour video monitor are compatible.
If youhaveanyquestionsregardingthe selection of the video format, pleasecall your
authorizedKrell dealer, distributor, or Krell.
AN INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEM SETUP
TheHomeTheater Standardprovides a variety of connection andoperation options for
outstanding musicandcinemasoundtrackreproduction. Totake full advantageof the
features the HomeTheaterStandardoffers, you’ll needto set up your systemin this
order:
1, Connectyour HomeTheater Standardto the desired analog and digital audio
sources, video sources, and amplifiers. SeeConnectingthe HomeTheater
Standard to Your System, on page 23.
2. Configure your HomeTheater Standard’s speakervolume, input devices, andtrims
using the built-in, easy-to-follow SystemSetupandConfiguration menus.Step-by-
step instructions begin on page26, SystemSetup and Configuration.
3. Reviewthe Front Panel, BackPanel, andRemoteControl descriptions for information
on input, zone, andmodeselections, speakeradjustment, input andoutput
connectionsfor analog, digital, andvideo sources, andremotecontrol operation. See
pages7-22for illustrations anddescriptions.
After you’ve connectedandconfigured your HomeTheater Standardand knowits basic

TheHomeTheater Standardfront panel provides poweron andoff; input, zone, and
processingmodeselection; monitoring anddisplay of processorstatus; andbalance
andvolumecontrol. Thefront panel componentsare described below.
Basic Operation
1 Power Button
Thepowerbutton switches the HomeVideoStandardfrom the stand-by to the
operational mode.
Note
Whenyou poweroff while zone2 is se/ected, on/y zone2 turns off. Pressthe power
button or HTSkey a secondtime to poweroff the mainzone.
2 Power LED
Theblue powerLEDilluminates whenthe HomeTheater Standardis in the operational
mode.
3 Stand-by LED
Thered stand-by LEDilluminates whenthe backpanel powerswitch (54) is on,
indicating that the HomeTheater Standardis in stand-by mode.Krell recommendsthat
the backpanelpowerswitch remainin the up position at all times.
4 Infrared Sensor
Theinfrared sensor receives commandsfrom the HomeTheater Standard remote
control. For properremotecontrol operation, makesure the infrared sensoris not
coveredor obstructed.
Input Device Selection Buttons andLEDs
Whenproperly configured, the HomeTheater Standardkeepstrack of eachdevice and
its associated connections. For example,DVDuses Coax1for digital audio, Composite1
for video, and S-1 for analog audio. TheHomeTheater Standardautomatically engages
the correct inputs whenyoupress a front paneldeviceselection button.
TheHomeTheater Standardis equippedwith the following input selections, whichallow
you to select the device connectedto your HomeTheater Standard. Aboveeachdevice
are two LEDs:onered andonegreen. Thered LEDilluminates whenthe input is
engagedandplaying in the mainzone. ThegreenLEE)illuminates whenthe input is
engagedandplaying in zone2.

15 Main Zoneand Zone2 Button
Usethis button to select either mainzoneor zone2 device control. SeeMainZoneand
Zone2 Operation, on page54.
16 Main Zone and Zone2 LEDs
TheHomeTheater Standardhas two zone device controls, mainor zone2. Aboveeach
device are two LEDs:onered andonegreen. Thered LEDilluminates whenthe input is
engagedandplaying in the mainzone. ThegreenLEDilluminates whenthe input is
engagedandplaying in zone2.

17 Infrared Emitter
Emits the HomeTheater Standardremote operation codeto a learning remote, which
can be programmedto operate the HomeTheater Standard. See ProgramRemote, on
page48.
Processing Mode Buttons and LED$
18 Stereo Button and LED
Usethis button to select the stereo decodingmode,whichallows youto listen to a
stereo recording in two channel(left andright) mode.Thered LEDilluminates whenthis
modeis activated.
Note
Thestereo decodingmodeoperatesonly with ananaloginput or a digital PCMinput (for
example,a compactdisc).
19 Music1 Button and LED
20 Music2 Button and LED
Usethese buttons to engageKrell Music Surroundmode.This music-decoding mode
allows youto listen to a stereo recording in a multi-channel mode.This modecan also
be programmedto create different simulated acoustic environments. Thered LED
illuminates whenthis circuitry is engaged.SeeConfigure Music, on page47.
Note
TheKrell MusicSurrounddecodingmodeoperatesonly with an analoginput or a digital
PCMinput (for example,a compactdisc).
21 Pro Logic Button and LED
Usethis button to engageDolbyProLogic circuitry for usewith all DolbySurround
encodedmaterial, including laser discs, videotapes, television broadcasts,andcompact
discs. Thered LEDilluminates whenthe HomeTheater Standardis in the DolbyPro
Logic decoding mode.
Note
This modeis selectedautomatically if Do/byDigital sourcematerial is encodedfor Pro
Logic. If youwishto turn off this mode,pressthe ProLogicbutton.
22 Preamp Button and LED
Usethis button to sendthe signal fromthe analoginput directly to the volumecontrol,
with no digital processing,using the analogstage of the preamp.This avoidspossible
digital signal degradationandcanbe usedfor componentswith a high quality signal
such as the KPS28c. SeeConfigure Mode,on page36, for information on assigning
the analog input to oneof the device buttons (DVD,LD, SAT,VCR,TV).

Thefront paneldisplay providesstatus messagesfor HomeTheaterStandard
operations,including volumeandbalancelevel, decodingmode,andzoneinformation.
In addition, whena newdeviceis selected,the physicalinputsaredisplayed.The
displayturnsoff after five secondsof inactivity.
24 UserButton
Usethis programmablebutton to select oneof three available dynamicrange
compressionmodes:normal(11 dB), max(imum)(no compression),or night (22
SeeUserButtonSetup,onpage50. In addition, the userbutton canbedeactivated.
25 BalanceButton
Pressthis buttonto adjustthemainleft/right speakerbalance.Thisbuttonconvertsthe
volumelevel controlsto balancecontrols. BAL0 in the front paneldisplaywindow
indicatesthe centerposition. Balancemaybeadjustedin .5 dBincrements,upto 6 dB.
Balancelevels areshownnumericallyonthe front paneldisplay. Thebalancelevel
buttonsrevert to their original functionsasmainvolumelevel controlsafter three
secondsof inactivity.
Individual Channel Buttons
Usethe Center,Rear,andSubbuttonsto changetaste trims (maketemporaryspeaker
output adjustmentsof +/- 10dB). Thesetemporarychangesrevert to 0 dBwhena new
deviceis selectedor the systemis powereddown.Formoreinformationontaste trims

26 CenterButton
Pressthe centerbutton,thenusethe level upanddownbuttons(30) to adjust the
center speakervolume.
27 RearButton
