Introduction
Thankyou for your purchaseof the .Krell HomeTheater StandardSurround
Preamp/Processor.
The HomeTheater Standard provides optimummusic and cinema soundtrack
reproductionquality throughKrell CurrentMode,discrete ClassA direct-coupled
circuitry, andbalancedoutputs on all six channels.Broadcastquality switching and
circuitry--including componentvideo, S-video, andcompositevideo--ensure
unmatchedvideo performance.Built-in DolbyDigital, DolbyPro Logic, andDTS
decodingmakethe HomeTheater Standard compatible with virtually any surround
soundsource, including digital videodisc(DVD)softwareanddigital television
broadcasts.
Dualzonecapability gives youa variety of configuration possibilities for whole-house
systems. A handheld remote control, RS-232and optional PHASTLink communications
ports, RC-5baseband,and12 VDCinput/output (12 V trigger) interface integrate the
HomeTheater Standard into any system. TheHomeTheater Standard’s flexible,
modulararchitecture allows you to upgradehardwareand software to accommodate
future surround soundformats and design enhancements.
Theowner’s reference manualcontains important information on placement,
installation, andoperation of the Krell HomeTheaterStandard.Pleasereadthis
information carefully. A thoroughunderstandingof these details helps ensure
satisfactory operation of andlong life for your HomeTheaterStandardandrelated
system components.

Followingare the definitions of key termsusedin your owner’sreferencemanual.
INPUT AND OUTPUT CONNECTIONS
Balanced
A symmetricalinput or output circuit that has equalimpedancefrom both input terminals
to a commongroundreference point. Theindustry standardfor professional andsound
recording installations, balancedconnectionshave6 dBmoregain than single-ended
connectionsandallow the use of long interconnect cables. Balancedconnectionsare
completely immuneto induced noise from the systemor the environment.

Multi-channel(DB-25)
Abalancedinput or outputcircuit that allowsfor the simultaneousconnectionof all
audiooutputsplusone5 VDC(5 Volt trigger) via a single cable.DB-25inputsand
outputsare becomingpopularfor connectinganaudio/videosurroundsoundprocessor
andpoweramplifiers, simplifying the integrationof the twocomponentsinto your
system.
Single-ended
Atwo-wireinput or outputcircuit. Usecarewhenusingsingle-endedconnectionsas the
groundconnectionis madelast andbrokenfirst. Turnthe systemoff prior to makingor
breakingsingle-endedconnections.Single-endedconnectionsare not recommended
for connectionsrequiringlongcableruns.
OPERATION
Off
Whenthe powerswitchonthe backpanelis placedin the downposition andLEDsturn
off, the componentis off.
Stand-by Mode
Whenthe HTSis connectedto ACpowerandthe backpanelpowerswitch is in the up
(on) position, the redstand-byLEDilluminates. Thisindicatesthat the componentis
stand-bymode,a lowpowerconsumptionstatus that keepsthe audioandregulator
circuits at idle. Krell recommendsleavingthe componentin the stand-bymodewhenit
is not playingmusic.
Operational Mode
Whenthe componentis in the stand-bymode,andyoupressthe powerbutton onthe
front panelor the powerkeyon the remotecontrol, the bluepowerLEDilluminates. The
componentis in the operationalmodeandis readyto play music.
TECHNOLOGY
Krell Current Mode
AproprietaryKrell circuit topologyin whichthe audiogainstagesof a component
operatein the currentrather thanthe voltagedomain.Thisuniquetechnologyprovides
the componentwith exceptionalspeedanda widebandwidth.
Krell HEAT
TheKrell termHEAT,or HighEndAudioTheater,is a designapplication incorporated
into Krell componentsto enhancemulti-channelhomeentertainmentsystems.AKrell
HEATsystemis anintegratedhometheater systemconsistingof a state-of-the-art Krell
preamp/processorandmatchingamplifiers that reproducetwochannelandmulti-
channelsourceswith audiophilesoundquality, placingthe audiencein the middleof a
lifelike environment.

Unpacking
Openthe box andremovethe top.layer of foam. Yousee these items:
1 HomeTheater Standard
1 IEC connector (AC power) cord
1 HomeTheater Standard handheld remote control
1 CR2025lithium battery
1T-15Torx wrench(small "L" type)
1 T-10Torx wrench(small "L" type)
1 12 VDCoutput (12 V trigger) cables
1 packet containing the owner’s reference manual,the RS-232Port developer’s
reference,the "readthis first" insert, andthewarrantyregistration card.
Carefully removethe unit andaccessories from the box. Removethe foamendcaps
andprotective plastic wrapfromthe unit.

authorizedKrell dealer, distributor, or Krell for assistance.Saveall packingmaterials. If
youmustship your HomeTheaterStandardin the future, repackthe unit in its originaJ

Placement
Beforeyouinstall the HomeTheaterStandardinto yoursystem,reviewthe following
guidelinesto choosethelocationfor thecomponent.Thiswill facilitate a clean,trouble-
freeinstallation.
TheHomeTheaterStandarddoesnot require anytypeof special rack or cabinetfor
installation. Forthe dimensionsof yourHomeTheaterStandardseeSpecifications, on
pages59-60.
TheHomeTheaterStandardrequires at least two inches(5 cm)of clearanceoneach
side andat least twoinches(5 cm)of clearanceaboveandbelowthe component
provideadequateventilation. Further,the HomeTheaterStandardrequiresat least
three inches(7 cm)of clearancebetweenother connectedcomponents.For
installationsinsidecabinetry,extraventilationmaybenecessary.
AC POWERGUIDELINES
TheHomeTheaterStandardhassuperbregulation anddoesnot require a dedicated
ACcircuit. Avoidconnectionsthroughextensioncordsor multiple ACadapters.High
quality 15ampgroundedACstrips areacceptable.Highquality ACline conditionersor
filters maybeusedif theyaregrounded.
Power Cord
TheHomeTheaterStandardshouldbeusedonly with the powercord supplied. Contact
yourauthorizedKrell dealer,distributor, or Krell beforeusinganydevicesdesignedto
alter or stabilize the ACpowerfor the HomeTheaterStandard.

Getting Started
READTHIS FIRST
Performthe following steps to makethe On-ScreenDisplay(OSD)viewableonyour
videomonitor. Thevideoformatandvideosignals of the HomeTheaterStandardand
the videomonitorneedto matchbeforethe OSDis viewable.Thevideoformatof the
videosignal canbeset to either NTSCor PAL.
Thefollowing table details the different videosignalsandvideoformatssupportedby
the HomeTheaterStandard:

1. Connectyourvideomonitorto the videooutput connectorsonthe HomeTheater
Standardthat correspondsto the input connectorsonyourvideomonitor(refer to
theabovetable).
2. Poweronthe HomeTheaterStandardby switching the backpanelpowerswitch to
on.Waitfor the HTSto initialize. Thenpressthe powerbuttononthe front panel.

Standardandthe default videosignalsandvideoformatsassociatedwith eachbutton:

Pressthe front paneldevicebuttonthat matchesboththe videoformatandvideo
signal compatiblewith yourconnectedvideomonitor(refer to the abovediagram).
Thisbecomesthe currently selectedvideosignal output.

4. Verify that the video monitor’s video signal input correspondsto the HomeTheater
Standardvideo signal output. Pressthe menukeyon the remotecontrol to verify
that the OSDis nowviewable on the video monitor. Thesystemconfiguration main
menuappears whenthe video format and video signals betweenthe HomeTheater
Standardandyour video monitor are compatible.
If youhaveanyquestionsregardingthe selection of the video format, pleasecall your

AN INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEM SETUP
TheHomeTheater Standardprovides a variety of connection andoperation options for
outstanding musicandcinemasoundtrackreproduction. Totake full advantageof the
features the HomeTheaterStandardoffers, you’ll needto set up your systemin this
order:
1, Connectyour HomeTheater Standardto the desired analog and digital audio
sources, video sources, and amplifiers. SeeConnectingthe HomeTheater
Standard to Your System, on page 23.
2. Configure your HomeTheater Standard’s speakervolume, input devices, andtrims
using the built-in, easy-to-follow SystemSetupandConfiguration menus.Step-by-
step instructions begin on page26, SystemSetup and Configuration.
3. Reviewthe Front Panel, BackPanel, andRemoteControl descriptions for information
on input, zone, andmodeselections, speakeradjustment, input andoutput
connectionsfor analog, digital, andvideo sources, andremotecontrol operation. See
pages7-22for illustrations anddescriptions.
After you’ve connectedandconfigured your HomeTheater Standardand knowits basic
