appropriately qualified personnel in order to avoid a hazard. In case of damage,
unplug the machine and contact our after sales support centre for advice.
• Disconnect: Switch off and unplug the appliance from the power outlet when
not in use, before assembling or disassembling parts and before cleaning. Grip
the plug when disconnecting, do not pull on the cord.
• RCD: Unless your home is already fitted with a residual current device (safety
switch), we recommend installing an RCD with a rated residual operating
current not exceeding 30mA to provide additional safety protection when using
electrical appliances. See your electrician for professional advice.

Getting Started
Before First Use
• Unpack the appliance but keep the original packaging materials in a safe
place. It will help prevent any damage if the product needs to be transported in
the future, and you can use it to store the appliance when it is not in use. In the
event that the carton is to be disposed of, please recycle all packaging materi-
als. Plastic wrapping can be a suffocation hazard for babies and young children,
so ensure all packaging materials are out of their reach and disposed of safely.
• Inspect the cord and plug for damage or wear before each use. Do not use
the appliance if the appliance or its cord have been damaged or are not working
properly. In case of damage, contact the after sales support line.
• Read all instructions in this manual and make sure you understand all
warnings. Refer to the Product Overview, page 7, to familiarise yourself with all
the parts and operating principles of the Coffee & Spice Grinder. Pay particular
attention to the safety instructions on the previous pages.
• Remove and wash the transparent cover with a soft cloth or sponge in warm,
soapy water to remove any dust from transport. Dry thoroughly.
• Remove the stainless steel grinding container and wipe it with a damp cloth,
taking care not to injure yourself on the sharp grinding blades. Dry thoroughly.
Assembly
• Install the grinding container: When all parts are completely dry, put the
stainless steel grinding container back into its place. Align the tabs on the base
of the container with the notches in the opening of the motor base, push down
and turn clockwise to lock it in place (Fig.1).
• Install the cover: Place the cover on top. To lock it securely for operation, align
the tabs on the rim of the cover with the notches at the top of the base, push
down firmly and turn clockwise to lock (Fig.2).

Getting Started (Cont.)
GRINDING TIMES AND MAXIMUM QUANTITIES
Coffee Bean Quantity
The markings inside the stainless steel grinding container indicate the coffee
bean level for the number of cups required. They are intended as a guide; feel
free to vary the amount depending on your taste and the type of coffee used.
However, do NOT add more coffee beans than up to the MAX (12) level, or
up to the (4) cup level when grinding spices or grains.
CUP Selection
Set the CUP selector to correspond with the amount of coffee beans filled in the
grinding container. Again, this is a guide only as coarse grinding takes less time
than fine grinding. You will need to experiment to find the combination of set-
tings that best suit your coffee and taste.
GRIND Selection
Set the GRIND selector to the desired grind. As a rough guide, we suggest the
following settings for the different types of coffee machine:
Coarse: Drip-filter coffee makers
Mid setting: Coffee percolators and plungers
Fine: Espresso machines
Grinding Times
The CUP and GRIND settings above will automatically determine the duration
of the grinding time, which ranges from approximately 5 seconds (for 2 cups
coarsely ground coffee) to approximately 30 seconds (for 12 cups finely ground
coffee).
IMPORTANT! Maximum Operating Times
Do not operate the appliance for longer than 60 seconds (2 x the maximum
30 second grind cycle) as the motor could overheat and cause damage to the
appliance. Allow the appliance to rest for at least 5 minutes before reuse.

10
Using the Coffee & Spice Grinder
• Remove the cover and ensure that the grinding container is empty, clean and
dry, and is securely locked in place on the motor base (Fig.1, page 8).
• Hold the power plug firmly and fully extend the cord by pulling it out gently.
• Plug the grinder into an appropriate wall outlet and switch on power to the outlet.
• Add the desired quantity of coffee beans, grains or spices to the grinding
container, making sure not to add more than the maximum quantities listed
opposite.
• Cover the grinding container with the transparent lid, aligning the tabs on the
rim with the notches at the top of the base. Push down
firmly and turn it clockwise to secure (Fig.2, page 8).
• Set the CUP selector to the number of cups for
which you want to grind coffee. This number should
correspond to the amount of coffee you added to the
grinding container (Fig.3; see also page 9 for details).
• Set the GRIND selector to the appropriate grind size
(Fig.3; see also page 9 for details).
• Press the START/STOP button to start the grinder
(Fig.4). It will stop automatically.
• When the appliance has stopped grinding, assess the
result through the transparent cover and if you want a
finer grind, press the START/STOP button again.
• When your coffee beans or spices have reached the
desired grind, unplug the grinder from the power outlet.
• Gently tap the cover to remove any ground coffee
(spices) that may adhere to the cover. Turn the cover
anticlockwise and lift it off the container. Turn the
grinding container anticlockwise and lift it off the
motor base.
• To remove the ground ingredients, invert the grinding
container and tap the base. Exercise caution when emptying the grinding
container and beware of the sharp grinding blade at the bottom of the container.
• Clean the appliance according to the instructions on page 13.

Instructions (Cont.)
Hints for Grinding Coffee
• Only buy as much coffee as you will use within a week after opening.
Fresh coffee tastes best.
• To retain optimum freshness, store the coffee beans in an airtight container in
a cool, dark area. Do not store coffee in a refrigerator or freezer.
• Grind the coffee beans just before brewing, and only grind as much as you will
need.
• When grinding coffee, do not fill coffee beans past the MAX (12) setting inside
the stainless steel grinding container.
Hints for Grinding Spices and Grains
• To ensure optimum freshness, buy spices in small quantities and store them in
glass jars in a cool, dark area.
• Use spices before their best-before dates as their flavour will deteriorate with
age. The older the spices, the harder it will become to grind them down.
• If your recipe calls for dry roasted spices, roast the whole spices in a frypan,
without oil, over medium heat. Stir until fragrant, or until they 'pop'. Leave the
spices to cool before grinding.
• When grinding grains or spices, do not fill the stainless steel grinding container
past the (4) cup setting. Set the CUP selector to [ 4 ] and the GRIND selector
to a medium setting for a 7–15 second grind cycle.
• After grinding spices, clean residues from around the blade with a clean pastry
brush. Grinding a handful of raw, white rice after grinding spices will help clean
residues from around the blades and absorb some of the aromas.
NOTE:
The Coffee & Spice Grinder is UNSUITABLE for:
:Grinding extremely hard or large spices (e.g. whole nutmeg).
:Grinding sticky substances (e.g. candied fruit or chocolate).
:Processing ingredients into spice pastes, dips or batters.
MAXIMUM QUANTITIES
Do not add more coffee, spices or grains into the grinding container than the
below quantities. Levels are marked inside the container.
Coffee beans: Up to the 12 cup (Coffee max.) level
Spices or grains: Up to the 4 cup (Spice max.) level

Frequently Asked Questions
I don't drink coffee every day. How long can I store it?
Coffee starts losing its freshness almost immediately after roasting, so try to buy
your beans in smaller batches. Grinding your own coffee is best, but only grind as
much as you will need at any time, as coffee turns stale relatively quickly after it
is ground. Properly stored (see below), coffee beans should retain their flavour for
around two to four weeks.
What is the best way to store coffee?
Coffee (beans or ground) should be stored in an opaque, airtight container in a
cool, dark area, such as in a pantry. Avoid any areas where the coffee is exposed
to direct sunlight, heat or moisture. Don't store coffee in a refrigerator or freezer, as
it will absorb the moisture from the air around it, which will spoil its taste. Vacuum
sealing ground coffee will extend its shelf life, and it will enable freezing, if required.
Does it really matter how finely I ground my coffee beans?
Yes. Too coarsely ground beans will result in under-extracted coffee, which is
weaker and less flavoursome. If your grind is too fine, the coffee may get over-
extracted, which gives it a bitter taste, or it may clog your filter and lead to possible
overflow in an espresso machine.
What is the right grind size for my coffee?
The size of your grind depends on the type of coffee you are making.
• For strong and intense types of coffee (such as Italian espresso or Turkish
coffee), the beans should be finely ground until they have the consistency of salt.
If the grind feels like sugar, it's too coarse; if it feels like flour, it's too fine.
• For lighter, fresher styles of coffee (such as percolator, plunger or drip-filter
coffee), grind the beans to a medium or coarse consistency.
How can I avoid sediment at the bottom of my filter coffee?
Try a coarser grind for drip-filter coffee, especially if you are using a machine with a
permanent filter. If you still get some fine sediment, ensure you let the coffee settle
before pouring it carefully into a cup, or try using a paper filter.
Why is my ground coffee sticking to the sides of the cover during grinding?
This is due to the different electrostatic charge of the beans and the cover. To
reduce it, try rinsing the cover in cold water before use, and dry well.
Can I grind things such as oats, almonds or rice?
Yes, the Coffee & Spice Grinder is perfect for making your own oatmeal, almond
meal or rice flour, but do not fill the grinding container above the 4 cup setting
when grinding grains or spices.

Other Useful Information
Cleaning and Care
Clean out the coffee grinder after each use, otherwise any coffee left in it may
become stale and taint the next lot of coffee. Thorough cleaning of the grinding
container is particularly important if you use the appliance for grinding coffee as
well as spices or grains.
Grinding Container
• Wipe the inside of the stainless steel grinding container with a slightly damp
cloth and dry well. Do not wash the container under running water or immerse it
in water or other liquid.
• Use a dry pastry brush to clean around the blades, taking care not to cut
yourself. To dislodge any particles from under the blades, install the container
and cover back onto the motor base, connect the unit to power and operate it
briefly. Then unplug the unit and wipe the inside clean with a dry cloth.
Transparent Cover
Wash the lid in warm, soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly before reuse.
DO NOT wash the cover in a dishwasher or use harsh or abrasive cleansers.
Motor Base
Clean the outer surfaces of the Spice and Coffee Grinder with a soft, damp cloth
only. Never immerse the motor base in water or other liquid.
Storage
When the appliance is not in use, turn the cord winder at the underside of the
grinder in clockwise direction until the cord is fully stored inside the appliance.
Store the grinder in a clean and dry place, out of children's reach. We recommend
you store it in the original carton, which will protect it from dust.
IMPORTANT!
Never wash any parts of the Coffee & Spice Grinder in a dishwasher.
WARNING!
• Before cleaning the Coffee & Spice Grinder or removing parts, ensure the
appliance is disconnected from the power supply.
• DO NOT immerse the motor base or cord in water or other liquid for cleaning.
• DO NOT fill the stainless steel grinding container with water or other liquid.
• DO NOT use alkaline, abrasive or harsh cleaning agents.
• DO NOT wash any part of the appliance in the dishwasher.
