AP-686VF/F 1
CHAPTER 1.
INTRODUCTION
The AP-687VF/F is a full-size PentiumII and PentiumIII PCI/ISA single board
computer that is using the Intel 440 BX chipset, that supports the Ultra DMA-33 for
faster hard drive and the health monitoring hardware. The health monitoring hardware
detects and releases a sound alarm for any abnormal function of the operating voltage
& temperature of CPU or it’s cooling fan. For boosting operation, this motivated card
also supports sockets for a Flash Disk, three DIMMs.
Take note that the AP-687VF is a high power & full engine SBC with AGP display of
resolution up to 1600x1200 at 256 colors. It is a board that has so much for a deluxe
cost. It is all you got in this full engine SBC with so much features. No hassle of
going through the extra effort and cost of additional I/O cards.
The AP-687VF/F is built as a PCI/ISA expansion card that is simply upgraded by
changing one card from another without replacing the whole system. It provides the
primarily elements for building an IBM PC/AT compatible computer for a wide variety of
applications with system integration. The AP-687VF/F is fully compatible with the IBM
PC/AT which means virtually all the software written for the IBM PC/AT will run on the
AP-687VF/F SBC.
Other on-board features include two serial ports (RS-232 and RS-232/422/485), one
multi-mode parallel (ECP/EPP/SPP) port, a floppy drive controller, a keyboard interface
and a PS/2 mouse interface. The built-in high speed PCI IDE controller supports both
PIO and bus master modes. Up to four IDE devices can be connected, including large
hard disks, CD-ROM drives, tape backup drives and other IDE devices. Its 8-layer
printed circuit board combines with noise-tolerant and low power consumption CMOS
technology applied on the board makes AP-687VF able to withstand any harsh
industrial environments very well.

2.2 INSTALLING AND UPGRADING THE CPU
To upgrade to a higher power PentiumII or PentiumIII CPU, simply remove the old
CPU and install to a new one; be sure to set the jumpers for the new CPU type and
speed.
WARNING!
Disconnect the power cord from your system when you intend to
work on it or you plan to open the chassis of your IPC. Do no
t
make connections when the power is turned on because the
sensitive electronic components could been damaged by the
sudden rush of power. Please only allow experienced electroni
c
technicians to do this job.
STATIC ELECTRICITY PRECAUTION!
Caution! Computer components are very sensitive to damage
from static electric discharge. Always ground yourself to remove
static charge build-up before touching the boards in the computer.
Use a grounding wrist strap at all time. Place all electroni
c
components on the anti-static pad for static-dissipation or in a
static-shielded bag when they are not in the chassis.
CAUTION!
Danger of Explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace
only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the
manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the batter
y
manufacturer’s instructions.

INSTALLING THE DIM MODULE:
A DIM module simply snaps into a socket on the system board. Pin1 of the DIM module
must correspond with Pin1 of the socket.
1. Pull the “tabs” which are at the ends of the socket to the side.
2. Position the DIMM above the socket with the “notches” in the module aligned with the
“keys” on the socket.
3. Seat the module vertically into the socket. Make sure it is completely seated. The
tabs
will hold the DIMM in place.
INSTALLING NOTES FOR CeleronTM PROCESSOR:
1. Hold the SBC with the PCB component side facing you in an angle of 75° at a
distance 30cm.
2. Slide CeleronTM Processor against the left and right retention module to the Slot 1
socket, until a “click” sound is produced by the connection between the gold fingers
and connector pins.
3. The CeleronTM Processor is loosely withstanding against the Slot 1 connector, now
secure the guides of the latch pins (one at a time) to the edges of the CPU heat sink,
until a “click” sound is produced by the key against key way. Please take note the
retention modules and latch clippers have the left and right orientation marked on the
surface of the material.
REMOVING THE LATCH CLIPPERS
1. With the component side of SBC facing you, push the spring of the latch clipper(s)
from right to left for the left latch clipper and vice-versa for right latch clipper.

CPU TEMPERATURE SENSOR INSTALLATION PRCESS
1. Put the temperature sensor in the rivet hole of heat sink on CPU.
2. Adhered the holder to heat sink.
3. Put the wire on the holder and buckle the clip.
4. Place 2-pin female connector on TMR2 2-pin male header.
2.3 JUMPER SETTING OVERVIEW
In order to select the operation modes of your system, configure and set the jumpers on
the your SBC to match the need of your application. To set a jumper, a black plastic
cap containing metal contacts is placed over the jumper pins as designated by the
required configuration as listed in this section. A jumper is said to be “ on ” or “ 1-2 ”
when the black cap has been placed on two of its pins, as show in the figure below:
A pair of needle-nose pliers is recommended when working with jumpers. If you have
any doubts about the best hardware configuration for your application, contact your
local sales representative before you make any changes. In general, you simply need
a standard cable to make most connections.
