Powercordsandpoweradapters
Useonlythepowercordsandpoweradapterssuppliedbytheproductmanufacturer.Donotusetheac
powercordforotherdevices.
Thepowercordsshallbesafetyapproved.ForGermany,itshallbeH03VV-F,3G,0.75mm2(thepowercord
connectedtothepoweradapter),H05VV-F,3G,0.75mm2(thepowercordconnectedtotheinternalpower
supplyassembly),orbetter.Forothercountries,thesuitabletypesshallbeusedaccordinly.
Neverwrapapowercordaroundapoweradapterorotherobject.Doinsocanstressthecordinwaysthat
cancausethecordtofray,crack,orcrimp.Thiscanpresentasafetyhazard.
Alwaysroutepowercordssothattheywillnotbewalkedon,trippedover,orpinchedbyobjects.
Protectpowercordandpoweradaptersfromliquids.Forinstance,donotleaveyourpowercordorpower
adapternearsinks,tubs,toilets,oronfloorsthatarecleanedwithliquidcleansers.Liquidscancausea
shortcircuit,particularlyifthepowercordorpoweradapterhasbeenstressedbymisuse.Liquidsalsocan
causeradualcorrosionofpowercordterminalsand/ortheconnectorterminalsonapoweradapter,
whichcaneventuallyresultinoverheatin.
Ensurethatallpowercordconnectorsaresecurelyandcompletelypluedintoreceptacles.
Donotuseanypoweradapterthatshowscorrosionattheacinputpinsorshowssinsofoverheatin(such
asdeformedplastic)attheacinputoranywhereonthepoweradapter.
Donotuseanypowercordswheretheelectricalcontactsoneitherendshowsinsofcorrosionor
overheatinorwherethepowercordappearstohavebeendamaedinanyway.
Generalsafety
Followtheserulestoensureeneralsafety:
•Observeoodhousekeepinintheareaofthemachinesdurinandaftermaintenance.
•Whenliftinanyheavyobject:
1.Ensureyoucanstandsafelywithoutslippin.
2.Distributetheweihtoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet.
3.Useaslowliftinforce.Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouattempttolift.
4.Liftbystandinorbypushinupwithyourlemuscles;thisactionremovesthestrainfromthe
musclesinyourback.

Attention:
Donotattempttoliftanyobjectsthatweihmorethan16k(35lb)orobjectsthatyouthinkare
tooheavyforyou.
•Donotperformanyactionthatcauseshazardstothecustomer,orthatmakestheequipmentunsafe.
•Beforeyoustartthemachine,ensurethatotherservicerepresentativesandthecustomer'spersonnelare
notinahazardousposition.
•Placeremovedcoversandotherpartsinasafeplace,awayfromallpersonnel,whileyouareservicin
themachine.
•Keepyourtoolcaseawayfromwalkareassothatotherpeoplewillnottripoverit.
•Donotwearlooseclothinthatcanbetrappedinthemovinpartsofamachine.Ensurethatyoursleeves
arefastenedorrolledupaboveyourelbows.Ifyourhairislon,fastenit.
•Inserttheendsofyournecktieorscarfinsideclothinorfastenitwithanonconductiveclip,approximately
8centimeters(3inches)fromtheend.
•Donotwearjewelry,chains,metal-frameeyelasses,ormetalfastenersforyourclothin.
Remember:Metalobjectsareoodelectricalconductors.
•Wearsafetylasseswhenyouare:hammerin,drillin,solderin,cuttinwire,attachinsprins,usin
solvents,orworkininanyotherconditionsthatmihtbehazardoustoyoureyes.
•Afterservice,reinstallallsafetyshields,uards,labels,androundwires.Replaceanysafetydevice
thatiswornordefective.
•Reinstallallcoverscorrectlybeforereturninthemachinetothecustomer.

Hazardousmoingparts.Keepfingersandotherbodypartsaway.
CAUTION:
Beforeyouopenthecomputercoer,turnoffthecomputerandwaitseeralminutesuntilthe
computeriscool.
Electricalsafety
CAUTION:
Electricalcurrentfrompower,telephone,andcommunicationcablescanbehazardous.Toaoid
personalinjuryorequipmentdamage,disconnecttheattachedpowercords,telecommunication
systems,networks,andmodemsbeforeyouopenthecomputercoers,unlessinstructedotherwise
intheinstallationandconfigurationprocedures.

Observethefollowinruleswhenworkinonelectricalequipment.
Important:Useonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshavehandlescoveredwithasoft
materialthatdoesnotinsulateyouwhenworkinwithliveelectricalcurrents.Manycustomershave,near
theirequipment,rubberfloormatsthatcontainsmallconductivefiberstodecreaseelectrostaticdischares.
Donotusethistypeofmattoprotectyourselffromelectricalshock.
•Findtheroomemerencypower-off(EPO)switch,disconnectinswitch,orelectricaloutlet.Ifanelectrical
accidentoccurs,youcanthenoperatetheswitchorunpluthepowercordquickly.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltaes.
•Disconnectallpowerbefore:
–Performinamechanicalinspection
–Workinnearpowersupplies
–RemovinorinstallinFieldReplaceableUnits(FRUs)
•Beforeyoustarttoworkonthemachine,unpluthepowercord.Ifyoucannotunpluit,poweroffthe
wallboxthatsuppliespowertothemachineandlockthewallboxintheoffposition.
•Ifyouneedtoworkonamachinethathasexposedelectricalcircuits,observethefollowinprecautions:
–Ensurethatanotherperson,familiarwiththepower-offcontrols,isnearyou.
Remember:Anotherpersonmustbetheretoswitchoffthepower,ifnecessary.
–Useonlyonehandwhenworkinwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorbehindyourback.
Remember:Theremustbeacompletecircuittocauseelectricalshock.Byobservintheaboverule,
youmaypreventacurrentfrompassinthrouhyourbody.
–Whenusinatester,setthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessoriesfor
thattester.
–Standonsuitablerubbermats(obtainedlocally,ifnecessary)toinsulateyoufromroundssuchas
metalfloorstripsandmachineframes.
Observethespecialsafetyprecautionswhenyouworkwithveryhihvoltaes;theseinstructionsarein
thesafetysectionsofmaintenanceinformation.Useextremecarewhenmeasurinhihvoltaes.
•Reularlyinspectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperationalcondition.
•Donotusewornorbrokentoolsandtesters.
•Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuit.First,checkthatithasbeenpowered-off.
•Alwayslookcarefullyforpossiblehazardsinyourworkarea.Examplesofthesehazardsaremoistfloors,
nonroundedpowerextensioncables,powersures,andmissinsafetyrounds.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereflectivesurfaceofaplasticdentalmirror.Thesurfaceis
conductive;suchtouchincancausepersonalinjuryandmachinedamae.
•Donotservicethefollowinpartswiththepoweronwhentheyareremovedfromtheirnormaloperatin
placesinamachine:
–Powersupplyunits
–Pumps
–Blowersandfans
–Motorenerators
andsimilarunits.(Thispracticeensurescorrectroundinoftheunits.)
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs:
–Usecaution;donotbecomeavictimyourself.
–Switchoffpower.

–Sendanotherpersontoetmedicalaid.
Safetyinspectionguide
Theintentofthisinspectionuideistoassistyouinidentifyinpotentiallyunsafeconditionsonthese
products.Eachmachine,asitwasdesinedandbuilt,hadrequiredsafetyitemsinstalledtoprotectusers
andservicepersonnelfrominjury.Thisuideaddressesonlythoseitems.However,oodjudmentshould
beusedtoidentifypotentialsafetyhazardsduetoattachmentoffeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredbythis
inspectionuide.
Ifanyunsafeconditionsarepresent,youmustdeterminehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldbeand
whetheryoucancontinuewithoutfirstcorrectintheproblem.
Considertheseconditionsandthesafetyhazardstheypresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallyprimarypower(primaryvoltaeontheframecancauseseriousorfatal
electricalshock).
•Explosivehazards,suchasadamaedCRTfaceorbulincapacitor
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinhardware
Theuideconsistsofaseriesofstepspresentedinachecklist.Beinthecheckswiththepoweroff,and
thepowercorddisconnected.
Checklist:
1.Checkexteriorcoversfordamae(loose,broken,orsharpedes).
2.Power-offthecomputer.Disconnectthepowercord.
3.Checkthepowercordfor:
a.Athird-wireroundconnectorinoodcondition.Useametertomeasurethird-wireround
continuityfor0.1ohmorlessbetweentheexternalroundpinandframeround.
b.Thepowercordshouldbetheappropriatetypeasspecifiedinthepartslistins.
c.Insulationmustnotbefrayedorworn.
4.Removethecover.
5.Checkforanyobviousalterations.Useoodjudmentastothesafetyofanyalterations.
6.Checkinsidetheunitforanyobviousunsafeconditions,suchasmetalfilins,contamination,wateror
otherliquids,orsinsoffireorsmokedamae.
7.Checkforworn,frayed,orpinchedcables.
8.Checkthatthepower-supplycoverfasteners(screwsorrivets)havenotbeenremovedortamperedwith.
Handlingelectrostaticdischarge-sensitiedeices
Anycomputerpartcontainintransistorsorinteratedcircuits(ICs)shouldbeconsideredsensitiveto
electrostaticdischare(ESD).ESDdamaecanoccurwhenthereisadifferenceincharebetweenobjects.
ToprotectaainstESDdamae,equalizethecharebetweenobjects.Then,themachine,thepart,the
workmat,andthepersonhandlinthepartareallatthesamechare.
Notes:
1.Useproduct-specificESDprocedureswhentheyexceedtherequirementsnotedhere.
2.MakesurethattheESDprotectivedevicesyouusehavebeencertified(ISO9000)asfullyeffective.
WhenhandlinESD-sensitiveparts:
•Keepthepartsinprotectivepackaesuntiltheyareinsertedintotheproduct.

•Avoidcontactwithotherpeoplewhilehandlinthepart.
•Weararoundedwriststrapaainstyourskintoeliminatestaticonyourbody.
•Preventthepartfromtouchinyourclothin.Mostclothinisinsulativeandretainsachareeven
whenyouarewearinawriststrap.
•Usetheblacksideofaroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-freeworksurface.Thematisespecially
usefulwhenhandlinESD-sensitivedevices.
•Selectaroundinsystem,suchasthoselistedbelow,toprovideprotectionthatmeetsthespecific
servicerequirement.
Note:TheuseofaroundinsystemisdesirablebutnotrequiredtoprotectaainstESDdamae.
–AttachtheESDroundcliptoanyframeround,roundbraid,orreen-wireround.
–UseanESDcommonroundorreferencepointwhenworkinonadouble-insulatedor
battery-operatedsystem.Youcanusecoaxorconnector-outsideshellsonthesesystems.
–Usetheroundround-pronoftheacpluonac-operatedcomputers.
Groundingrequirements
Electricalroundinofthecomputerisrequiredforoperatorsafetyandcorrectsystemfunction.Proper

itonlywiththesamemoduletypemadebythesamemanufacturer.Thebatterycontainslithiumand
canexplodeifnotproperlyused,handled,ordisposedof.Donot:
