Thischaptercontainsthesafetinformationthatouneedtobefamiliarwithbeforeservicingacomputer.
Generalsafety
Followtheserulestoensuregeneralsafet:
•Keeptheareasaroundthecomputerclearandcleanduringandaftermaintenance.
•Whenliftinganheavobject:
1.Ensureoucanstandsafelwithoutslipping.
2.Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallacrossbothfeet.
3.Liftslowl.Nevermovesuddenlortwistwhenouattempttolift.
4.Liftbstandingorbpushingupwithourlegmuscles;thisactionremovesthestrainfromthe
musclesinourback.
Donotattempttoliftanyobjectsthatweighmorethan16kg(35lb)orobjectsthatyouthinkare
tooheavyforyou.
•Donotperformanactionthatwouldcreateahazardforthecustomer,orwouldmakethecomputer
unsafe.
•Beforeoustartthecomputer,ensurethatotherservicerepresentativesandcustomerpersonnelarenot
inapositionthatwouldcreateahazardforthem.
•Placeremovedcoversandotherpartsinasafeplace,awafromallpersonnel,whileouareservicingthe
computer.
•Keepourtoolcaseawafromareasthatpeoplemawalkthroughtoensureno-onetripsoverit.
•Donotwearlooseclothingthatcanbetrappedinthemovingpartsofamachine.Ensurethatoursleeves
arefastenedorrolledupaboveourelbows.Ifourhairislong,tieorfastenitback.
•Inserttheendsofournecktieorscarfinsideclothingorfastenitwithanon-conductiveclip,
approximatel8centimeters(3inches)fromtheend.
•Donotwearjewelr,chains,metal-frameeeglasses,ormetalfastenersforourclothing.
Reeber:Metalobjectsaregoodelectricalconductors.
•Wearsafetglasseswhenouare:hammering,drillingsoldering,cuttingwire,attachingsprings,using
solvents,orworkinginanotherconditionsthatmightbehazardoustoourees.
•Afterservice,reinstallallsafetshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.Replaceansafetdevice
thatiswornordefective.
•Reattachallcoverscorrectlbeforereturningthecomputertothecustomer.
Electricalsafety
CAUTION:
Electricalcurrentfropower,telephone,andcounicationcablescanbehazardous.T oavoid
personalinjuryorequipentdaage,disconnectanyattachedpowercords,telecounication
cables,networkcables,andodecablesbeforeyouopenthecoputercovers,unlessinstructed
otherwiseintheinstallationandconfigurationprocedures.

Observethefollowingruleswhenworkingonelectricalequipment.
Iportant:Useonlapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshavehandlescoveredwithasoft
materialthatdoesnotinsulateouwhenworkingwithliveelectricalcurrents.Mancustomershaverubber
floormatsneartheirequipmentthatcontainsmallconductivefiberstodecreaseelectrostaticdischarge.
•Findtheroomemergencpower-off(EPO)switch,disconnectingswitch,orelectricaloutlet.Ifanelectrical
accidentoccurs,oucanthenoperatetheswitchorunplugthepowercordquickl.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltages.
•Disconnectallpowerbefore:
–Performingamechanicalinspection
–Workingnearpowersupplies
–RemovingorinstallingFieldReplaceableUnits(FRUs)
•Beforeoustarttoworkonthecomputer,unplugthepowercord.Ifoucannotunplugit,askthe
customertopower-offtheelectricaloutletthatsuppliespowertothemachineandtolocktheelectrical
outletintheoffposition.
•Ifouneedtoworkonacomputerthathasexposedelectricalcircuits,observethefollowingprecautions:
–Ensurethatanotherperson,familiarwiththepower-offcontrols,isnearou.
Reeber:Anotherpersonmustbetheretoswitchoffthepower,ifnecessar.
–Useonlonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinour
pocketorbehindourback.
Reeber:Theremustbeacompletecircuittocauseelectricalshock.Bobservingtheaboverule,
oumapreventacurrentfrompassingthroughourbod.
–Whenusingatester,setthecontrolscorrectlandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessoriesfor
thattester.
–Standonsuitablerubbermats(obtainedlocall,ifnecessar)toinsulateoufromgroundssuchas
metalfloorstripsandmachineframes.
Observethespecialsafetprecautionswhenouworkwithverhighvoltages;theseinstructionsarein
thesafetsectionsofthemaintenanceinformation.Useextremecarewhenmeasuringhighvoltages.
•Regularlinspectandmaintainourelectricalhandtoolstoensurethearesafetouse.
•Donotusewornorbrokentoolsandtesters.
•Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuit.First,checkthatithasbeenpoweredoff.
•Alwaslookcarefullforpossiblehazardsinourworkarea.Examplesofthesehazardsarewetfloors,
non-groundedpowerextensioncables,conditionsthatmacauseorallowpowersurges,andmissing
safetgrounds.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereflectivesurfaceofaplasticdentalmirror.Thissurfaceis
conductive,andtouchingalivecircuitcancausepersonalinjuranddamagetothecomputer.
•Donotservicethefollowingpartswiththepoweronwhentheareremovedfromtheirnormaloperating
positionsinacomputer:
–Powersupplunits
–Pumps
–Blowersandfans
–Motorgenerators
andsimilarunits.(Thispracticeensurescorrectgroundingoftheunits.)
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs:
–Usecaution;donotbecomeavictimourself.

Safetyinspectionguide
Theintentofthisinspectionguideistoassistouinidentifingpotentialhazardsposedbtheseproducts.
Eachcomputer,asitwasdesignedandbuilt,hadrequiredsafetitemsinstalledtoprotectusersand
servicepersonnelfrominjur.Thisguideaddressesonlthoseitems.However,goodjudgmentshouldbe
usedtoidentifpotentialsafethazardsduetoattachmentoffeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredbthis
inspectionguide.
Ifanhazardsarepresent,oumustdeterminehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldbeandwhetherou
cancontinuewithoutfirstresolvingtheproblem.
Considerthefollowingitemsandthesafethazardsthepresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallprimarpower(primarvoltageontheframecancauseseriousorfatal
electricalshock).
•Explosivehazards,suchasadamagedCRTfaceorbulgingcapacitor
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinghardware
Theguideconsistsofaseriesofstepspresentedasachecklist.Beginthecheckswiththepoweroff,and
thepowercorddisconnected.
Checklist:
1.Checkexteriorcoversfordamage(loose,broken,orsharpedges).
2.Power-offthecomputer.Disconnectthepowercord.
3.Checkthepowercordfor:
a.Athird-wiregroundconnectoringoodcondition.Useametertomeasurethird-wireground
continuitfor0.1ohmorlessbetweentheexternalgroundpinandframeground.
b.Thepowercordshouldbetheappropriatetpeasspecifiedinthepartslistings.
c.Insulationmustnotbefraedorworn.
4.Removethecover.
5.Checkforanobviousalterations.Usegoodjudgmentastothesafetofanalterations.
6.Checkinsidetheunitforanobvioushazards,suchasmetalfilings,contamination,waterorother
liquids,orsignsoffireorsmokedamage.
7.Checkforworn,fraed,orpinchedcables.
8.Checkthatthepower-supplcoverfasteners(screwsorrivets)havenotbeenremovedortamperedwith.
Handlingelectrostaticdischarge-sensitivedevices
Ancomputerpartcontainingtransistorsorintegratedcircuits(ICs)shouldbeconsideredsensitiveto
electrostaticdischarge(ESD).ESDdamagecanoccurwhenthereisadifferenceinchargebetweenobjects.
ProtectagainstESDdamagebequalizingthechargesothatthecomputer,thepart,theworkmat,andthe
personhandlingthepartareallatthesamecharge.

1.Useproduct-specificESDprocedureswhentheexceedtherequirementsnotedhere.
2.MakesurethattheESDprotectivedevicesouusehavebeencertified(ISO9000)asfulleffective.

•Keepthepartsinprotectivepackagesuntiltheareinsertedintotheproduct.
•Avoidcontactwithotherpeoplewhilehandlingthepart.
•Wearagroundedwriststrapagainstourskintoeliminatestaticonourbod.
•Preventthepartfromtouchingourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeandretainsachargeeven
whenouarewearingawriststrap.
•Usetheblacksideofagroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-freeworksurface.Thematisespeciall
usefulwhenhandlingESD-sensitivedevices.
•Selectagroundingsstem,suchasthoselistedbelow,toprovideprotectionthatmeetsthespecific
servicerequirement.
Note:TheuseofagroundingsstemisdesirablebutnotrequiredtoprotectagainstESDdamage.

Groundingrequireents
Electricalgroundingofthecomputerisrequiredforoperatorsafetandcorrectsstemfunction.Proper
groundingoftheelectricaloutletcanbeverifiedbacertifiedelectrician.

TheCAUTIONandDANGERsafetnoticesinthissectionareprovidedinthelanguageofEnglish.

TheSetupUtilitprogramisusedtoviewandchangetheconfigurationsettingsofourcomputer,regardless
ofwhichoperatingsstemouareusing.However,theoperatingsstemsettingsmightoverrideansimilar
settingsintheSetupUtilitprogram.
StartingtheLenovoBIOSSetupUtilityprogra
TostarttheLenovoBIOSSetupUtilitprogram,dothefollowing:
1.Ifourcomputerisalreadonwhenoustartthisprocedure,shutdowntheoperatingsstemand
turnoffthecomputer.
2.PressandholdtheF1kethenturnonthecomputer.WhentheLenovoBIOSSetupUtilitprogramis
displaed,releasetheF1ke.

YoumustusethekeboardwhenusingtheLenovoBIOSSetupUtilitmenu.Thekesusedtoperform
varioustasksaredisplaedonthebottomofeachscreen.
Usingpasswords
YoucanusetheLenovoBIOSSetupUtilitprogramtosetpasswordstopreventunauthorizedpersons
fromgainingaccesstoourcomputeranddata.See“StartingtheSetupUtilitprogram.”Thefollowing
tpesofpasswordsareavailable:
•AdministratorPassword
•Power-OnPassword
Youdonothavetosetanpasswordstouseourcomputer.However,ifoudecidetosetpasswords,read
thefollowingsections.
Passwordconsiderations
Apasswordcanbeancombinationoflettersandnumbersupto16characters(a-zand0-9).Forsecurit
reasons,itisagoodideatouseastrongpasswordthatcannotbeeasilcompromised.Wesuggestthat
passwordsshouldfollowtheserules:
•Forastrongpassword,use7-16charactersandamixoflettersandnumbers.
•Donotuseournameorourusername.
•Donotuseacommonwordoracommonname.
•Usesomethingsignificantldifferentfromourpreviouspassword.
Attention:AdministratorandPower-Onpasswordsarenotcasesensitive.

AdinistratorPassword
SettinganAdministratorPassworddetersunauthorizedpersonsfromchangingconfigurationsettings.You
mightwanttosetanAdministratorPasswordifouareresponsibleformaintainingthesettingsofseveral
computers.
AfterousetanAdministratorPassword,apasswordpromptisdisplaedevertimeouaccesstheLenovo
BIOSSetupUtilitprogram.
IfboththeAdministratorandPower-OnPasswordareset,oucantpeeitherpassword.However,oumust
useourAdministratorPasswordtochangeanconfigurationsettings.
Setting,changing,ordeletinganAdinistratorpassword
TosetanAdministratorPassword,dothefollowing:

Ifoutpedthenewpasswordcorrectl,thenewpasswordwillbeinstalled.ASetupNoticedconfirming
thatchangeshavebeensavedwillbedisplaed.
TodeleteapreviouslsetAdministratorPassword,dothefollowing:
1.FromtheSecuritymenu,selectSetAdinistratorPasswordandpresstheEnterke.
2.Thepassworddialogboxwillbedisplaed.TpethecurrentpasswordandpresstheEnterke.
3.TodeleteanAdinistratorPassword,leaveeachnewpasswordlineitemblank,thenpresstheEnter
ke.ASetupNoticeconfirmingthatchangeshavebeensavedwillbedisplaed.
4.ReturntotheLenovoBIOSSetupUtilitprogrammenuandselecttheExitoption.
5.SelectSavechangesandExitfromthemenu.
Power-OnPassword
