Chapter 1. Safety infor ation
T is c apter presents t e following safety information t at you need to be familiar wit before you service a
Lenovo notebook computer.
General safety
Follow t ese rules to ensure general safety:
• Observe good ousekeeping in t e area of t e mac ines during and after maintenance.
• W en lifting any eavy object:
1. Make sure t at you can stand safely wit out slipping.
2. Distribute t e weig t of t e object equally between your feet.
3. Use a slow lifting force. Never move suddenly or twist w en you attempt to lift.
4. Lift by standing or by pus ing up wit your leg muscles; t is action removes t e strain from t e
muscles in your back. Do not attempt to lift any object that weighs more than 16 kg (35 lb) or that you
think is too heavy for you.
• Do not perform any action t at causes azards to t e customer, or t at makes t e equipment unsafe.
• Before you start t e mac ine, make sure t at ot er service tec nicians and t e customer's personnel are
not in a azardous position.
• Place removed covers and ot er parts in a safe place, away from all personnel, w ile you are servicing t e
mac ine.
• Keep your tool case away from walk areas so t at ot er people will not trip over it.
• Do not wear loose clot ing t at can be trapped in t e moving parts of a mac ine. Make sure t at your
sleeves are fastened or rolled up above your elbows. If your air is long, fasten it.
• Insert t e ends of your necktie or scarf inside clot ing or fasten it wit a non-conductive clip, about 8
centimeters (3 inc es) from t e end.
• Do not wear jewelry, c ains, metal-frame eyeglasses, or metal fasteners for your clot ing.
Attention: Metal objects are good electrical conductors.
• Wear safety glasses w en you are ammering, drilling, soldering, cutting wire, attac ing springs, using
solvents, or working in any ot er conditions t at mig t be azardous to your eyes.
• After service, reinstall all safety s ields, guards, labels, and ground wires. Replace any safety device t at
is worn or defective.
• Reinstall all covers correctly before returning t e mac ine to t e customer.
• Fan louvers on t e mac ine elp to prevent over eating of internal components. Do not obstruct fan
louvers or cover t em wit labels or stickers.
Electrical safety
Observe t e following rules w en working on electrical equipment.
I portant: Use only approved tools and test equipment. Some and tools ave andles covered wit a soft
material t at does not insulate you w en working wit live electrical currents.Many customers ave, near
t eir equipment, rubber floor mats t at contain small conductive fibers to decrease electrostatic disc arges.
Do not use t is type of mat to protect yourself from electrical s ock.
• Find t e room emergency power-off (EPO) switc , disconnecting switc , or electrical outlet. If an electrical
accident occurs, you can t en operate t e switc or unplug t e power cord quickly.
• Do not work alone under azardous conditions or near equipment t at as azardous voltages.
• Disconnect all power before:
– Performing a mec anical inspection
– Working near power supplies

– Removing or installing main units
• Before you start to work on t e mac ine, unplug t e power cord. If you cannot unplug it, ask t e customer
to power-off t e wall box t at supplies power to t e mac ine, and to lock t e wall box in t e off position.
• If you need to work on a mac ine t at as e posed electrical circuits, observe t e following precautions:
– Ensure t at anot er person, familiar wit t e power-off controls, is near you.
Attention: Anot er person must be t ere to switc off t e power, if necessary.
– Use only one and w en working wit powered-on electrical equipment; keep t e ot er and in your
pocket or be ind your back.
Attention: An electrical s ock can occur only w en t ere is a complete circuit. By observing t e above
rule, you may prevent a current from passing t roug your body.
– W en using testers, set t e controls correctly and use t e approved probe leads and accessories for
t at tester.
– Stand on suitable rubber mats (obtained locally, if necessary) to insulate you from grounds suc as
metal floor strips and mac ine frames.
Observe t e special safety precautions w en you work wit very ig voltages; Instructions for t ese
precautions are in t e safety sections of maintenance information. Use extreme care w en measuring ig
voltages.
• Regularly inspect and maintain your electrical and tools for safe operational condition.
• Do not use worn or broken tools and testers.
• Never assume t at power as been disconnected from a circuit. First, check t at it as been powered off.
• Always look carefully for possible azards in your work area. Examples of t ese azards are moist floors,
non-grounded power extension cables, power surges, and missing safety grounds.
• Do not touc live electrical circuits wit t e reflective surface of a plastic dental mirror. T e surface is
conductive; suc touc ing can cause personal injury and mac ine damage.
• Do not service t e following parts with the power on w en t ey are removed from t eir normal operating
places in a mac ine:
– Power supply units
– Pumps
– Blowers and fans
– Motor generators
– Similar units as listed above
T is practice ensures correct grounding of t e units.
• If an electrical accident occurs:
– Use caution; do not become a victim yourself.
– Switc off power.
– Send anot er person to get medical aid.
Safety inspection guide
T e purpose of t is inspection guide is to assist you in identifying potentially unsafe conditions. As eac
mac ine was designed and built, required safety items were installed to protect users and service
tec nicians from injury. T is guide addresses only t ose items. You s ould use good judgment to identify
potential safety azards due to attac ment of non-Lenovo features or options not covered by t is inspection
guide.
If any unsafe conditions are present, you must determine ow serious t e apparent azard could be and
w et er you can continue wit out first correcting t e problem.
Consider t ese conditions and t e safety azards t ey present:
• Electrical azards, especially primary power (primary voltage on t e frame can cause serious or fatal
electrical s ock)
• Explosive azards, suc as a damaged cat ode ray tube (CRT) face or a bulging capacitor
• Mec anical azards, suc as loose or missing ardware

To determine w et er t ere are any potentially unsafe conditions, use t e following c ecklist at t e
beginning of every service task. Begin t e c ecks wit t e power off, and t e power cord disconnected.
C ecklist:
1. C eck exterior covers for damage (loose, broken, or s arp edges).
2. Power off t e computer. Disconnect t e power cord.
3. C eck t e power cord for:
a. A t ird-wire ground connector in good condition. Use a meter to measure t ird-wire ground
continuity for 0.1 o m or less between t e external ground pin and t e frame ground.
b. T e power cord s ould be t e aut orized type specified for your computer. Go to: ttp://
www.lenovo.com/serviceparts-lookup
c. Insulation must not be frayed or worn.
4. C eck for cracked or bulging batteries.
5. Remove t e cover.
6. C eck for any obvious non-Lenovo alterations. Use good judgment as to t e safety of any non-Lenovo
alterations.
7. C eck inside t e unit for any obvious unsafe conditions, suc as metal filings, contamination, water or
ot er liquids, or signs of fire or smoke damage.
8. C eck for worn, frayed, or pinc ed cables.
9. C eck t at t e power-supply cover fasteners (screws or rivets) ave not been removed or tampered
wit .
Handling devices that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge
Any computer part containing transistors or integrated circuits (ICs) s ould be considered sensitive to
electrostatic disc arge (ESD). ESD damage can occur w en t ere is a difference in c arge between objects.
Protect against ESD damage by equalizing t e c arge so t at t e mac ine, t e part, t e work mat, and t e
person andling t e part are all at t e same c arge.
Notes:
1. Use product-specific ESD procedures w en t ey exceed t e requirements noted ere.
2. Make sure t at t e ESD protective devices you use ave been certified (ISO 9000) as fully effective.
W en andling ESD-sensitive parts:
• Keep t e parts in protective packages until t ey are inserted into t e product.
• Avoid contact wit ot er people.
• Wear a grounded wrist strap against your skin to eliminate static on your body.
• Prevent t e part from touc ing your clot ing. Most clot ing is insulative and retains a c arge even w en
you are wearing a wrist strap.
• Use a grounded work mat to provide a static-free work surface. T e mat is especially useful w en
andling ESD-sensitive devices.
• Select a grounding system, suc as t ose listed below, to provide protection t at meets t e specific
service requirement.
Note: T e use of a grounding system to guard against ESD damage is desirable but not necessary.
– Attac t e ESD ground clip to any frame ground, ground braid, or green-wire ground.
– W en working on a double-insulated or battery-operated system, use an ESD common ground or
reference point. You can use coax or connector-outside s ells on t ese systems.
– Use t e round ground prong of t e ac plug on ac-operated computers.

Grounding require ents
Electrical grounding of t e computer is required for operator safety and correct system function. Proper
grounding of t e electrical outlet can be verified by a certified electrician.
