T is c apter provides instructions on ow to replace ardware for your computer.
Before replacing hardware
Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any repairs before reading t is section and t e Important
Product Information Guide.
Notes before replacing hardware
• Use computer components provided only by Lenovo.
• W en installing or replacing an option, use t e appropriate instructions explained in t is manual along wit
t e instructions t at come wit t e option.
• In most areas of t e world, Lenovo requires t e return of defective CRUs. Information about t is will come
wit t e CRU or will come a few days after t e CRU arrives.
Handling static-sensitive devices
Do not open t e static-protective package containing t e new part until t e defective part as been removed
and you are ready to install t e new part. Static electricity, alt oug armless to you, can seriously damage
computer components and options.
W en you andle options and ot er computer components, take t ese precautions to avoid static-electricity
damage:
• Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up around you.
• Always andle options and ot er computer components carefully. Handle PCI/PCIe cards, memory
modules, system boards, and microprocessors by t e edges. Never touc any exposed circuitry.
• Prevent ot ers from touc ing t e options and ot er computer components.
• Touc t e static-protective package containing t e part to a metal expansion-slot cover or ot er
unpainted metal surface on t e computer for at least two seconds. T is reduces static electricity from t e
package and your body before you install or replace a new part.
• W en possible, remove t e new part from t e static-protective package, and install it directly in t e
computer wit out setting t e part down. W en t is is not possible, place t e static-protective package on
a smoot , level surface and place t e part on t e package.
• Do not place t e part on t e computer cover or ot er metal surface.
Knowing FRUs (including CRUs)
• Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) are computer parts t at a trained tec nician can upgrade or replace. FRUs
include all CRUs. For detailed FRU information, suc as t e FRU part numbers and supported computer

• Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) are computer parts t at a user can upgrade or replace.
– Self-service CRUs: You can install self-service CRUs easily. T ese CRUs mig t be stand-alone,
latc ed, or secured by up to two screws. Examples of self-service CRUs include t e keyboard, mouse,
any USB device. You are responsible for replacing all self-service CRUs.
– Optional-service CRUs: Handling optional-service CRUs requires some tec nical skills and simple tools
(suc as a screwdriver). T ese CRUs are isolated parts wit in t e computer. T ey are usually
