Get started with Windows 10
Learn the basi s of Windows 10 and start working with it right away. For more information about Windows
10, see the Windows help information.
Windows acco nt
You must reate at least one a ount to use the Windows operating system. It an be either a lo al a ount
or a Mi rosoft a ount.
Local acco nts
A lo al a ount is reated on a parti ular Windows-enabled devi e and it an only be used on that devi e. It
is re ommended that you set a password for ea h lo al a ount to prevent unauthorized a ess to the
devi e.
Microsoft acco nts
A Mi rosoft a ount is a user a ount that you use to sign in to Mi rosoft software and servi es. If you use
Mi rosoft servi es like OneDrive, Outlook. om, Xbox Live, Offi e 365, and Skype, you might already have
one. If you don't have it, you an reate one for free.
There are two main benefits of using a Mi rosoft a ount:
• Sign in only on e. If you use a Mi rosoft a ount to sign in to Windows 10, you don’t need to sign in again
to use OneDrive, Skype, Outlook. om, and other Mi rosoft servi es.
• Settings an be syn ed. If you use your Mi rosoft a ount to sign in to multiple Windows-enabled
devi es, ertain Windows settings an be syn ed among the devi es.
Switch between a local and a Microsoft acco nt
If you are using a lo al a ount to sign in to Windows 10, you an swit h to use a Mi rosoft a ount instead.
Step 1. Open the Start menu and sele t Settings ➙ Acco nts.
Step 2. Sele t Sign in with a Microsoft acco nt instead.
Step 3. If you already have a Mi rosoft a ount, enter the a ount name and password to sign in.
Otherwise, sele t Create one to reate a new Mi rosoft a ount.
Note: The devi e must have Internet a ess the first time you use a Mi rosoft a ount on that
devi e.
If you want to swit h ba k to use a lo al a ount, open the Start menu and sele t Settings ➙ Acco nts ➙
Sign in with a local acco nt instead.
Add additional ser acco nts
Your user a ount must be of the “Administrator” type to add additional user a ounts to Windows.
Add additional user a ounts if you need to share your omputer with family members or other users.
Step 1. Open the Start menu and sele t Settings ➙ Acco nts ➙ Family & other sers.
Step 2. Sele t Add someone else to this PC.

Note: To add family members, you need to sign in with a Mi rosoft a ount.
Step 3. Set the user name and password for the user a ount.
Set p face recognition
If your omputer in ludes a Windows Hello- ompatible infrared amera, you an set up fa e re ognition to
sign in with your fa e.
Step 1. Open the Start menu and sele t Settings ➙ Acco nts ➙ Sign-in options.
Note: If you are using a lo al a ount, the a ount must be password prote ted. Otherwise, you
annot set fa e re ognition.
Step 2. Under Manage how yo sign in to yo r device, sele t Windows Hello Face ➙ Set p ➙ Get
started.
Step 3. Follow on-s reen instru tions to omplete fa e re ognition. Create a PIN when prompted, in ase
fa e re ognition does not work at Windows sign-in.
Windows desktop
1. Acco nt Change a ount settings, lo k the omputer, or sign out of the
urrent a ount.
2. Doc ments Open the Doc ments folder, a default folder to save your re eived
files.
3. Pict res Open the Pict res folder, a default folder to save your re eived
pi tures.
4. Settings Open Settings.
5. Power Shut down, restart, or put the omputer into sleep mode.
6. Start b tton Open the Start menu.
7. Windows Search Enter what you are looking for in the sear h box and get sear h
results from your omputer and the Web.

8. Task View Display all opened apps and swit h between them.
9. Windows notification area Display notifi ations and status of some features.
10. Battery stat s icon Display power status and hange battery or power settings.
11. Network icon Conne t to an available wireless network and display the network
status.
12. Action center Display the latest notifi ations from apps and provide qui k a ess to
some features.
Open the Start men

• Press the Windows logo key on the keyboard.
Open Control Panel
• Open the Start menu and sele t Windows System ➙ Control Panel.
• Use Windows Sear h.
Open an app
• Open the Start menu and sele t the app you want to open.
• Use Windows Sear h.
Lenovo Vantage and Lenovo PC Manager
Lenovo Vantage and Lenovo PC Manager is software developed by Lenovo. Using the software, you an:
• View produ t information
• View warranty and support information
• Run hardware s an and diagnose problems
• Change hardware settings
• Update Windows, drivers, and UEFI/BIOS
Lenovo Vantage or PC Manager may be pre-installed on your omputer. To open it, enter the software name
in Windows Sear h and sele t the mat hed result.
Note: If Lenovo Vantage is not pre-installed, you an download it from Mi rosoft Store.
Connect to Wi-Fi networks
If your omputer in ludes a wireless LAN module, you an onne t your omputer to Wi-Fi® networks. The
wireless LAN module on your omputer may support different standards. For some ountries or regions, use
of 802.11ax may be disabled a ording to lo al regulations.
Step 1. Cli k the network i on in the Windows notifi ation area. A list of nearby networks is displayed.
Note: If no network is displayed, he k to ensure that the airplane mode is not turned on.
Step 2. Sele t a network and li k Connect. Provide se urity key if prompted.
Note: The network key is usually managed by the network administrator.

Forget a Wi-Fi network
Windows saves a list of Wi-Fi networks you have onne ted to, along with their passwords and other
settings. By doing this, your omputer is automati ally onne ted when it is in the range of a previously
onne ted network. However, if the network password has been hanged, you need to forget the network in
order to enter a new password.
Step 1. Sele t Start ➙ Settings ➙ Network & Internet ➙ Wi-Fi.
Step 2. Cli k Manage known networks.
Step 3. Cli k the network name and li k Forget.
T rn airplane mode on and off
Airplane mode is a onvenient setting to turn all wireless ommuni ations of your omputer on and off. You
may need to turn it on when boarding an airplane.
Step 1. Cli k the a tion enter i on in the Windows notifi ation area.
Step 2. Cli k the Airplane mode i on to turn it on or off.
Note: Cli k Expand if you annot find the airplane mode i on.
The Novo B tton men
The Novo Button menu an be displayed before the operating system starts. From the menu, you an
hoose to
• Open the BIOS/UEFI setup utility
• Open the boot devi e sele tion menu
• Open the Windows startup options s reen
From the Windows startup options s reen, you an then hoose to
• Continue: Exit and ontinue to Windows 10
• Use a devi e: Use a USB drive, network onne tion or Windows re overy DVD
• Troubleshoot: Reset your omputer or see advan ed options
• Turn off your PC
Open the Novo B tton men
For Lenovo omputers with a Novo button, you an press the button to open the Novo Button menu.
Step 1. Turn off the omputer.
Step 2. Open the LCD s reen and press the Novo button.
Note: Alternatively, turn off the omputer. Press Fn and the power button to open the Novo Button menu.

Keyboard hotkeys
Some keys on the keyboard are printed with i ons. These keys are alled hotkeys and an be pressed alone
or in ombination with the Fn key to open ertain apps or hange ertain settings qui kly. The fun tions of
the hotkeys are symbolized by the i ons printed on them.
Hotkey F nction
Mute/Unmute sound.
De rease/In rease system volume.
Mute/Unmute the mi rophone.
In rease/De rease s reen brightness.
Swit h display devi es.
Turn airplane mode on and off.
Open the Windows Settings app.
Lo k the s reen.
Display thumbnails of all open apps.
Open the Windows Cal ulator app.
Open Lenovo Vantage, Lenovo PC Manager, or an app laun h bar.
Open the Windows s reenshot tool.
Turn on/off or adjust the brightness of the keyboard ba klight.
Note: This hotkey must be used with the Fn key.
Hotkey mode
Some hotkeys share keys with fun tion keys (F1 to F12). The hotkey mode is a UEFI/BIOS setting that
hanges how hotkeys (or fun tion keys) are used.

Note: Hotkeys that do not share keys with fun tion keys are not affe ted by the hotkey mode setting. They
should always be used with the Fn key.
The FnLock switch
The FnLo k is a swit h that reverses the default and hidden fun tion of a hotkey. The following table
provides an example of how the FnLo k swit h hanges the default fun tion of the F1 key.

Note: The F1 fun tion is appli ation-dependent. It may have no fun tion if the a tive appli ation does not

The FnLo k swit h shares the ESC key (in the upper left orner of the keyboard). To turn it on or off, press Fn
+ ESC.
