This engine is designed to operate within a voltage range between 7-15 volts , depending on the size of the load. Under normal
conditions it should be able to pull over 15 freight cars on flat track.
oth ends of the engine are provided with operating knuckle-type couplers, so that the freight or passenger cars can be coupled
to the engine from either end. The engine can be coupled to the freight or passenger cars along any straight stretch of track,
provided that at least one of the mating couplers is open. The engine couplers are of the “magnetic” type, which are opened by
the central electro-magnet of the remote control track section (not included). To open the coupler, move the engine to the
remote control section so that the trigger disc of the coupler is directly over the tracks electro-magnet; then press the “uncouple”
button. The coupler can also be opened while the engine is in motion by pressing and holding the uncoupler button prior to the
coupler trigger disc passing over the central electro-magnet of the uncoupler track.
If you uncouple the engine from the train while the train is in motion, keep one hand on the voltage control of your transformer
and be ready to cut down the voltage since the engine will speed up immediately when its train load is released.

OPERATING COUPLERS
Your engine is equipped with "Tire -Traction". This means that two of the engine drive wheels on the motor truck are fitted with
rubber tires to permit greater pulling power. (See figure 2). Lionel engines with "Tire-Traction" grip the track and enable the
engine to pull heavy loads at higher speeds.
The engine's horn is activated by the horn/whistle button
or lever on your transformer, or by the 5906 Sound
Activation utton. (Not included). The horn will sound as
long as the button / lever is depressed. If the horn does-
n't sound, try changing the position on the Horn Control
Switch on the underside of the engine. (See figure 2). If
the horn still doesn't sound, try reversing the leads to the
track.
Sometimes dirt or grease on the track wheels, rollers,
etc. may cause the horn to sound intermittently.
Cleaning the wheels and the track should eliminate this
problem.

To replace the headlamp, first remove the screw on the front of the engine. Carefully
lift the front end slightly and pull the body forward until the slot in the body clears the
tab on the frame. Now lift the body off the frame. Pull out the lamp from the lamp
housing on the frame. (See figure 1). Replace it with bulb No.00-8352-311 available
at your local Lionel Authorized Service Station or the Consumer Service Department.
To replace the body, angle the front of the body slightly upward so that the rear slot
fits into the tab on the rear of the frame. Carefully lower the body until the screw holes
on the front of the body and the lamp housing post are lined up. Replace the screw.

REVERSING UNIT
ENGINE CARE
SERVICE
The engine is stopped, started and reversed by activating the reversing unit located inside the engine. The reversing unit is a
three position sequence relay which trips whenever current to the engine is interrupted. This can be done by triggering the
“Direction” control on the transformer, or by moving the transformer throttle control to the OFF position and then ON again. The
sequence of operation is Forward, Neutral, Reverse, Neutral, Forward, Neutral, etc.
If you wish to operate the train in one direction only, (which is necessary if you have automatic stations or insulated blocks in
your layout), you must deactivate the reversing unit. This is done by moving the reversing unit switch to its OFF position. This
switch is located on the underside of the frame (See Figure 2). Make sure the engine is moving in the desired direction, stop it
without triggering the “Direction” control (either turn down the power or lift the engine slightly, without losing contact between the
wheels and rails), then slide the reversing unit switch to the OFF position. If the reversing unit is deactivated while it is in the
neutral position, the engine will not run at all.

The life and performance of your engine depend, to a considerable extent, on proper care and lubrication of the moving parts.
You may wish to see your LIONEL dealer about purchasing a LU RICATION AND MAINTENANCE KIT. If you haven’t pur-
chased your LU RICATION AND MAINTENANCE KIT, use the point of a pin or a thin wire to apply a drop of OIL where indicat-
ed (See Figure 3). Lubricate carefully but never to excess. A small amount of oil or lubricant, properly applied goes a long way.
e careful not to get any oil or lubricant on the running surfaces of the wheels or the rails, or your engine will lose traction.
The moving parts of your engine, such as gears and axles, require periodic lubrication. When operating the engine regularly,
inspect these parts frequently to make sure they are not dry. Remove accumulations of dust and dirt. Also, clean and lubricate
the engine after prolonged storage. Use only small quantities of lubricant with each application. DO NOT OVER LUBRICATE.
Keep lubricant off wheel rims, track rails and contact points. Your engine should be lubricated every 5 to 10 hours of actual
use..
