Thematerialsofconstructionofthepumpareselectedbaseduponthechemicalcompatibilityofthefluid
beingpumped. Theusermustverifythatthematerialsaresuitableforthesurroundingatmosphere.
If thefluidisnon-conductive,methodsareavailabletomechanicallygroundtheisolatedshaft.Thisis
onlynecessaryifthesurroundingatmosphereisextremelyexplosiveorstraystaticchargesarepresent.

specialattentiontoall cautionarynotesinthissection.
1.5 Start-Up
Beforeoperatingthepump,inspectthesystemasoutlinedin Section4.Donotstartthepumpuntilthe
inspectionissatisfactoryand all safetyprecautionshavebeentaken.
1.6Operation&Troubleshooting
Thesuccessfulandsafeoperationofapumpisnotonlydependentonthepumpbutalsooneachofthe
systemcomponents.Itisthereforeimportanttomonitortheentirepumpingsystemduringoperationand
toperformthenecessarymaintenancetokeepthesystemrunningsmoothly.
Anormallyoperatingmagnetic-drivegearpumpwilldelivera steady, pulse-less flowwithnoleakage, be
relativelyquietandhaveapredictableflowratebasedonthepumpspeed,fluidviscosityanddifferential
pressureacross thepump.Refertotheperformancecurvesofthespecificpumpmodelbeingoperated
(seeLiquifloProductCatalog orwebsite: www.liquiflo.com).
If asignificantproblemisobservedduring operation,thepumpshouldbestoppedsothatcorrective
actioncanbetaken. Theobservedproblemcouldhaveseveralpossiblecauses, andmultipleremediesfor
eachcause. Forhelpwithproblemsolving, refertothe TroubleshootingGuidegivenin Appendix7.
1.7Maintenance &Repair
Thepumphasinternalbearings,wearplates,gearsandshaftswhichrequirereplacementovertimedueto
physicalwear.Thecenterhousingofthepumpmayalsoincurphysicalwearandrequirereplacement
(see Appendix3). O-ringsandretainingringsshouldalwaysbereplacedwhenrebuildingthepump.
Standardrepairkitsareavailabletofacilitaterepairofthepump(see Appendix4).Arepairkitincludes
all internalwearpartsaswell asO-rings,retaining rings,bearing lockpins,housingalignmentpinsand
keys.Thepartsnotincludedinamag-drivepumprepairkitarethehousings(front,centerand rear),
magnets(innerand outer), containmentcan, pedestalandhardware(bolts, nutsand washers).
Beforeperformingmaintenanceonthepump,reviewthesafetyprecautionsgivenin Section2.Removal
ofthepumpfromthepiping systemiscoveredin Section5.2.Todisassemblethepump,followthe
procedurein Section5.3.Toreplacepartsand reassemblethepump,followtheassemblyprocedurein
Section5.4.Whenperformingmaintenance,payspecialattentiontoall cautionarynotesgiveninthese

•Always lockoutthepowertothepumpdriverwhenperformingmaintenanceonthepump
•Always lockoutthesuctionanddischargevalveswhenperformingmaintenanceonthepump
•Never operatethepumpwithoutsafetydevicesinstalled
•Never operatethepumpwithsuctionand/ordischargevalvesclosed
•Never operatethepumpoutofitsdesignspecifications
•Never startthepumpwithoutmakingsurethatthepumpisprimed
•Never useheattodisassemblepump
•Inspecttheentiresystembeforestart-up

shouldavoidrepairson theseunits
•Strongmagneticfieldscancausetoolsand partstoslamtogether, injuringhandsand fingers
Strongmagnetswillattractiron, castiron, carbon steeland sometypesofstainless steel. Keepmagnets
awayfromcreditcards, computers, computerdiscsandwatches.

RefertotheHydraulicInstituteStandardsforproperinstallationproceduresofthebase, pumpandmotor.
Observethefollowingguidelines:
1)Thefoundationarea mustberigidandlevelformaintaining pumpalignment.
2)Thepumpandmotorassemblymustbesecurelyfastenedtothebase, and thebasemustbe
securelyattachedtotheground.
3)Thepumpinletshouldbeasclosetotheliquidsourceaspracticaland preferablybelowit.
4)Thepumpandmotorshouldbeaccessibleforservicing and inspection.
5)Thepumpandmotorshouldbecleanedperiodicallytopreventthebuild-up ofdust.
NOTE: Thepumpmodelscoveredinthismanualareclose-coupled andnoalignmentprocedurebetween
thepumpand motorisrequired.
3.2GeneralPipingRequirements
GuidelinesforpipingaregivenintheHydraulicInstituteStandardsand shouldbereviewedpriortopump
installation.
1)Allpipingmustbesupportedindependentlyand mustlineup naturallywithpumpports.
2)DO NOTmakefinalconnection ofpipingtopumpuntilthegrouthashardenedandthepumpand
motorhold-downboltshavebeentightened.
3)Pipingthathandlesbothhotand coldliquidsrequireproperinstallationofexpansion loopsand
jointssothatthermalexpansionofthepipingwill notcausemisalignment.
4)Gasketinstallationandmaterialsmustbesuitablefortheservice.
5)Pipingrunsshouldbedesignedtominimizefrictionlosses.
6)Suctionanddischargepipingshouldbethesamesizeorlarger thantheinletandoutletports.
7)Thepipingshouldbearrangedtoallowthepumptobeflushedanddrainedpriortotheremoval

2) Themaximumparticlesizecapableofbeingpassedbythepumpsis37 microns. Whenpumping
fluidscontainingsolids, a filter ofatleast400U.S.Mesh shouldbeinstalledinthesuctionline.
3) Concentrationofsolidsshouldbelimitedto1%byvolume. Exceeding1%cancausethewear
ratetoincreasetoanunacceptablelevel, resultingina rapiddecreaseinpumpperformance. In
additiontosolidsconcentration, thespecificwearratealsodependsonthesize, shapeand
hardness oftheparticles, theoperatingspeedandthematerialsusedtoconstructthepump.
3.4GeneralMotorRequirements
1)Themotormustbecompatiblewiththepumpand conditionsoftheapplication.
2) Themotorsupplyvoltagemustmatchthenameplatevoltageofthemotor.
3) Themotorshouldneverbeoperatedoutsideofitsdesignspecifications.

3.4.1MotorSelection
1) Themotorframemustbecompatiblewiththepumpmountingbracket. ChoicesareNEMA56C,
56HC,143TC, 145TC, 182TC&184TC,and IEC71,80&90 (B5flange). NEMA182/184TC
motorframeswill requirean adapterplate (P/NSP0046)and four adaptermounting bolts (P/N
641105)tomountthemotortothebracket(seePage29). (Note:Completepumpsorderedfor
usewithNEMA182/184TCmotorframeswill besuppliedwiththeadapterplateandadapter
mountingbolts.)
2)Themotormusthaveanenclosurethatiscompatiblewiththeapplicationconditions. If an
explosion-proofmotorisrequired, the temperaturecode ofthemotormustbeacceptableforthe
fluidthatwill bepumped.
3)Thespeedandpoweroutputratingofthemotormustbesufficientfortheconditionsofservice.
