WARNING:
Materials
Chimpanzees use their long,
strong arms to swing from tree to
tree through the forests of
Tanzania.
Follow the instructions to build
your own swinging chimpanzee.
When the chimpanzee moves up,
it gains energy. When it swings
over the top of the branch and
comes down, it releases energy.
See physics at play in every swing!

11
Slide the end of each rod
through the crossbar holes.
Position the rods so the holes at
the top of each rod line up.
With the chimp facing right side up, thread the string through
the top hole on the rod, the top hole on the left hand, the plastic
tube, the top hole on the right hand, and the top hole on the other
rod. Wrap a tape strip around the end of the string if it frays.
Thread the other end of the string through the bottom set of holes
the same way as in step 9.
Line up the holes in the
chimp’s hands with the holes
at the ends of the rods. Hint:
Rest the chimp and rods on
a flat surface to steady.
12
Hold the shorter sides of the rods with one hand. Make sure that
the crossbar sits slightly underneath the hanging chimp so that it
can swing around. Add the tree pieces to the tops of the rods.
Your swinging chimpanzee is complete! To make your chimp
swing, gently squeeze the two rods underneath the crossbar with
one hand. Squeeze again to make it flip back.
Pull the string taut and tie
the ends in a knot. Trim any
extra string with scissors.
Position the rods so there
are about two inches of
space where the chimp
hangs.
For proper swinging, start with
the string crossed as shown.

Materials
Scientist Dr. Jane Goodall was the first person
to discover that chimpanzees use sticks as
tools. She observed them as they poked the
sticks into termite mounds. The termites
would crawl onto the sticks, and the
chimpanzees would pull the sticks out to
easily eat the termites.
They were fishing for termites!
Try it out yourself with these instructions.
See how many termites you can catch.

Insert the tab into the slot.
Wrap the string around the end of the stick 6-8 times until the string is
completely wound. Let go of the string so both ball-shaped ends rest
on the opposite sides of the stick. Your chimpanzee tool is complete.
Punch out the termites and
place them inside the hill.
Use the stick to collect termites
from inside the hill. Play with a
friend to see who can catch
more within a certain amount
of time!
Slide the sticky string through
the slit at the end of the stick.
Pull the string so one of the
ball-shaped ends rests
against the stick’s opening.
Follow the vertical lines
along the middle panel to
fold the cutout into the hill.
Start with your termite hill cutout
and fold out marked flaps.
