GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The OPTICAL SPECTRUM ANALYZER module is build for use in the X-BERT mainframe, which has
a modular setup depending on the user’s configuration (E-BERT-, O-BERT-, Clock Source-, Clock
divider-, CDR-, OPM-, VOA-, OSW-, PHS- module, etc…). The mainframe is controlled via GPIB, USB
or LAN.
The OPTICAL SPECTRUM ANALYZER module is the ideal module to split an available clock signal
(400MHz to 850MHz) with good jitter and noise performance up to 6 channels. Every channel can be
used to set up an independent delay time up to ± 200ps. In combination with the E-BERT module a
parallel test setup is available for certain high speed measurements.
The delay time is selectable in 10ps steps for every channel using the buttons on the front panel and
in 1ps steps by the X-BERT GUI. All settings are controllable by the X-BERT graphical user interfaces
(X-BERT PARALLEX GUI) via controller interface. The programming commands for controlling the
OPTICAL SPECTRUM ANALYZER module are documented in the GPIB programmer’s guide.
Please take a look at our website www.luceotec.com for newly released modules; we are constantly
expanding our product spectrum.

INSTALLATION
BEFORE INITIALIZING AND OPERATING THE UNIT
Inspect the unit for any signs of damage.
Read the user’s manual thoroughly, and become familiar with all safety symbols and
instructions to ensure that the unit is operated and maintained safely.
INITIAL INSPECTION
Check that the unit and contents are complete:
Wear an anti-static wrist strap, and work in an electrostatic discharge (ESD) controlled area.
Inspect the shipping container for any indication of excessive shock to the contents, and
inspect the contents to ensure that the shipment is complete.
Inspect the unit for structural damage that can have occurred during shipping.
Keep the packaging.
Immediately inform Luceo Technologies GmbH and, if necessary, the carrier if the contents
of the shipment is incomplete, if the unit or any of its components are damaged or defective,
or if the unit does not pass the initial inspection.
OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
In order for the unit to meet the specifications, the operating environment must meet the following
conditions for temperature, humidity and ventilation.
TEMPERATURE
The unit can be operated in the temperature range of 0 to 50 °C.
HUMIDITY
The unit can be operated in environments with up to 85% humidity (10 to 50 °C). Do not expose it to
any environmental conditions or changes to environmental conditions that can cause condensation to
form inside the unit.
VENTILATION
The unit contains holes to achieve airflow to transport the heat out of the module. Do not place any
stickers or labels on the module cover which will reduce the airflow. Blocking the air circulation of the
unit can cause the unit to overheat, compromising its reliability and possibly leading to permanent
damage.

HANDLING CONNECTORS
Caution
Connecting damaged or dirty cables, optical fibers or connectors to the unit
can damage the connectors of the unit.
Use a torque wrench with a maximum torque of 1Nm
(0.74 lbs-ft) to connect cables to the SMA connectors.
A torque of more than 1Nm can damage the SMA connectors permanently.
Use of inappropriate tools when connecting cables and fibers to connectors
(wrenches, spanners etc) can result in mechanical damage to adjacent
connectors and to the connector itself. Similar damage can occur if using a
torque wrench set to a torque above the maximum recommended value.
It is recommended to use dust caps or 50Ω terminations for unused ports /
