Congratulations on purchasing a high-quality Maginon® product. You have chosen a modern
portable scanner with excellent technical features and respective accessory, which is particularly
easy to use. Please study all information in detail, observing, in particular, the safety information.
The scanner comes with a 3-year warranty. In case of a scanner defect you will need
the enclosed warranty card and your till receipt.
Keep these in a safe place together with the Operating Instructions.
Include the Operating Instructions when passing on the scanner to third parties.

3. Hazard, Safety and Warning notices
Intended use
This portable scanner has been designed for private use and is not suitable to be used for
commercial purposes
Hazards for children and persons with limited ability to operate electronic
equipment
The portable scanner, accessories and packaging are not toys for children to play with and
should be kept away from children. There could be a risk of electrocution, poisoning and
suffocation.
The device may not be used by persons (including children) with a limited physical, sensory or
mental ability or persons not being able to operate the device due to a lack of experience and/or
knowhow, unless they are supervised by a person responsible for safety or have received
instructions on how to operate the device.
Children should be supervised, to ensure that they are not playing with the device.
Electrical hazard
Switch off device if foreign bodies or fluid has entered the portable scanner, disconnect from
mains and/or remove batteries. Leave all parts to dry thoroughly, danger of fire and electrocution.
If the portable scanner has been dropped or its housing has been damaged, switch off device,
disconnect from mains and/or remove batteries, danger of fire and electrocution.
The portable scanner may not be dismantled, modified or repaired, there is a danger of fire and
electrocution.
Use only a USB power supply with the rated input voltage specified on the rating plate, danger of
fire and electrocution. The device is disconnected from the mains by disconnecting the USB
power supply from the mains socket.
The connected USB power supply can continue to consume power and represent a hazard source.
The USB power supply may not be used during a thunder storm, there is danger of electrocution.
Damage from heat – re hazard
Do not leave the portable scanner in places that are susceptible to considerable increases in
temperature (e.g. in a vehicle). The housing and internal parts may be damaged, which in turn
could cause a fire.
Do not wrap up portable scanner and USB power supply or place on textiles. This could produce
a build-up of heat in the device that could cause deformation of the housing and may represent a
fire hazard.

Hazards of using batteries
Remove batteries from portable scanner if device is not used for some time.
Do not remove batteries immediately after having used the portable scanner for a longer period
of time, as batteries can become hot during use.
Incorrect changing of batteries or the use of incorrect battery types can cause an explosion
hazard. Only use AA Mignon LR6 1.5V or NiMH batteries with the same specification.
Explosion hazard! Always check correct polarity when replacing batteries.
Never expose batteries to excessive heat, such as sun radiation, fire, etc., there is danger of fire
and explosion.
Store batteries out of children’s reach.
Do not throw batteries into re, short-circuit or dismantle batteries, as risk of explosion.
Dispose of batteries as specied in the Battery Directive.
Injuries and material damage
Only place portable scanner on a sturdy surface. The portable scanner may otherwise drop or
fall over, incurring damage or causing injuries.
Do not operate portable scanner whilst running or driving. You could fall or cause a traffic
accident.
Only use the USB power supply specified for the portable scanner. No liability shall be accepted
for damage caused by an incorrect USB power supply.
The 230V socket used for the USB power supply must be accessible at all times so that the power
supply can be quickly disconnected from the mains if necessary.
Ensure adequate ventilation and do not cover the USB power supply to prevent overheating.
Do not place any open ignition sources, such as candles onto or close to the device.
Ensure that the LCD display is not subjected to any impact or concentrated pressure. This could
damage the glass of the display or fluid could drain from the device. Any fluid coming into
contact with the eyes or skin must be rinsed off immediately with clear water. If fluid has come
into contact with eyes, seek immediate medical attention.
Damage to the electronics or the LCD display caused by external influences, such as impacts, falls
or others are not covered by the warranty and shall thus be charged for.
Do not drop or knock portable scanner and always treat with due care, as otherwise device can
be damaged.

4.2. Overview of device
Element Function
1 Mini USB interface
The USB interface serves to provide power for the scanner via the supplied
USB power supply or a computer. The interface can also be used for connec-
ting the device to a computer for transferring images.
2 Battery compartment Insert four AA batteries or rechargeable batteries with the same specication
in the battery compartment.
3 ON/OFF button Switch on device by pressing this button. Press again to switch o device.
4 Memory card slot This slot accommodates microSD/SDHC memory cards.
5 JPG/PDF / UP key
JPG/PDF: In the scan mode the key can be used for selecting the scan format
JPG or PDF. The LCD display then shows the respective setting JPG or PDF.
UP: The key can also be used for setting the time.
6 COLOR / MONO key In the scan mode the key can be used for selecting colour or b/w scanning.
The LCD display then shows the respective symbol COLOR or MONO.
7 ENTER key Press this key to conrm any changes.
8 DPI / DOWN key
DPI: In the scan mode the key can be used for selecting high (900 dpi),
medium (600 dpi) or low (300 dpi) solution. The LCD display then shows the
respective resolution symbol (HI, MI or LO).
DOWN: The key can also be used for setting the time.
9 LCD display The LCD display indicates the device status.
10 TIME SET / FORMAT key
TIME SET: Press this key for about 3 seconds to enter the date and time
setting mode.
FORMAT: Press this key once to format the microSD card.
11 Format setting The slider is used to set the paper format to be scanned.

5. Using the scanner
5.1. Inserting the batteries
1. Open the battery compartment on the underside of the scanner.
2. Insert the AA Mignon LR6 (1.5V) batteries or rechargeable batteries with the same specication
in the battery compartment. The correct position of the batteries is shown next to the battery
compartment.
3. Close the battery compartment with the cover until it clicks into place.
4. Press the ON/OFF key to switch on the scanner.
Note:
• Explosion hazard! Always check correct polarity when inserting batteries.
Ensure that material strap is under battery inserted last. The material strap facilitates
removal of the batteries.

5.2. Inserting a memory card
A microSD or a microSDHC memory card must be inserted to scan documents or photos (a 4 GB
microSD card is supplied with the scanner). The memory card is inserted in the scanner as follows:
1. Switch o scanner by pressing the ON/OFF key.
2. Insert memory card in the slot as illustrated on the device, until the memory card clicks into place.
5.3. Connecting to power
The portable scanner can be battery and mains operated. The scanner can be connected to power
via the supplied USB power supply plugged into a mains socket or a USB connection to a computer.
Insert the USB cable into the USB port on the scanner. Plug the other end of the USB cable into the
USB power supply plugged into a mains socket. The USB cable can also be connected directly to a
computer.
Note:
• Donotinsertmemorycardwithforceasthiscoulddamagethescannerormemorycard.
In case of problems with inserting the card, position memory card as shown in the
illustration and retry inserting it into the slot.
• ThesuppliedmicroSDHCmemorycardandallnewmemorycardsmustbeformattedprior
to use (see also section 5.5. “Formatting the memory card”).
Note:
• Oncethescannerisconnectedtopower,nobatterypowerisused.
• Ifchargedbatterieshavebeeninserted,thescannerremainsswitchedononcethepower
connection is disrupted.
• Rechargeablebatteriescannotberechargedinthescanner.

5.4. Setting date and time
In order to be able to save scanned documents and photos with the correct scanning date, the date
and time must be set before starting the scanner for the rst time.
1. Push the TIME SET key for about 3 seconds to switch to the date and time setting mode.
2. On the LCD display, “1XX”is shown as “XX”as a two-digit numerical value for the year. Press the
UP key or DOWN key to select the correct year.
3. Press the ENTER key to conrm the setting.
4. The following setting options are now shown in succession on the LCD display:
1 XX Year
2 XX Month
3 XX Day
4 XX Hour
5 XX Minute
Change the respective values by pressing the keys UP or DOWN and conrm the setting by
pressing the ENTER key.
5. Once all values have been set, press the TIME SET key again. The setting is saved and the device
changes back to the scan mode.
5.5. Setting the le format
Choose if scanned documents shall be saved as JPG or PDF. Text documents should preferably be
saved as PDF, pictures as JPG.
Press the JPG/PDF button to choose the desired format. The corresponding symbol JPG or PDF will
appear in the display.
Note:
• Wherethescannerhascontainednooremptybatteriesforalongerperiod,dateandtime
may be lost. Date and time should therefore be checked if the scanner has not been
used for some time and should be reset, where necessary.

5.6. Formatting the memory card
This function formats the memory card and deletes all pictures and data contained on there.
1. Insert a microSD or microSDHC memory card in the switched o scanner.
2. Switch on scanner.
3. Press the FORMAT key to change the formatting mode. The LCD display now shows “F”.
4. Press the ENTER key to start formatting of the memory card. (To cancel the formatting press
FORMAT again.)
5. The “SD” display ashes until formatting has been completed. The number of existing les is then
shown to be “0”.
5.7. Setting the resolution
Press the DPI key to select a high, medium or low resolution. At a high resolution, the documents
are scanned at 900 dpi (dots per inch), at the medium resolution at 600 dpi and at the low resolution
at 300 dpi.
The respective symbol for high (HI), medium (MI) or low (LO) resolution is shown on the LCD display.
5.8. Setting the scanner operating mode
Documents and images can be scanned in colour and in b/w.
Press the COLOR/MONO key to select colour or b/w scanning. The respective symbol for colour
(COLOR) or b/w (MONO) is displayed on the LCD display.
Note:
• Caution:Formattingirrevocablydeletesalllescontainedonthememorycard.Allimpor-
tant data should therefore be saved to the computer prior to formatting.
Write-protected memory cards cannot be formatted.
Note:
• Atthehigherresolutionthequalityofthescanneddocumentisbetterbutthedocument
requires more memory on the memory card.
Note:
• Textdocumentstobeprocessedwiththeenclosedtextrecognitionsoftware(OCRsoft-
ware) should be scanned in b/w and at high resolution to achieve a better text recog-
nition.

5.9. Scanning
As soon as all settings have been entered and a memory card has been inserted into the scanner,
documents and images can be scanned.
1. Press the ON/OFF key to switch on the scanner.
2. The scanner is now in standby operation (ready mode). Select the le format, colour or b/w scan-
ning and high or low resolution, as required.
3. Push document with side to be scanned facing down into scanner until resistance can be felt.
Release the document, after a short delay the scanner starts to pull in and scans the document.
4. The green LED of the ON/OFF key is illuminated during scanning.
5. The scanned document is saved to the memory card as a JPEG or PDF le.
6. Once the document has been scanned, the scanner reverts to the ready mode and the next docu-
ment can be scanned in.

5.10. Scanning photos
The portable scanner can also be used to scan your photos.
1. Press the ON/OFF key to switch on the scanner.
2. Push the photo with side to be scanned facing down into scanner until resistance can be felt.
3. Release the photo, after a short delay the scanner starts to pull in and scans the photo.
4. The green LED of the ON/OFF key is illuminated during scanning.
5. The scanned document is saved to the memory card as a JPEG or PDF le.
6. Once the document has been scanned, the scanner reverts to the ready mode and the next docu-
ment can be scanned in.

6. Cleaning and calibrating the scanner
6.1. Cleaning the scanner lens
The scanner should be cleaned before or after use to ensure a high image quality at all times.
A cleaning card is enclosed with the scanner.
1. Insert the cleaning card like a normal paper document and leave the scanner to run for approx. six
seconds. Either side of the cleaning card can be used.
2. Switch o scanner after cleaning.
6.2. Calibrating the scanner
Recalibrate the scanner if you feel that, in particular photos are not (no longer) scanned in the right
colours. The calibration resets the colours of the scanner.
1. Remove the microSD/microSDHC card from the scanner, whilst the scanner is switched o.
2. Press and hold the [ POWER ] button to switch on scanner.
3. Press and hold the [ JPG/PDF ] button, then press the Enter [ ] button . Release both buttons to
enter into auto-calibration mode. A “C A L“ symbol will be displayed on LCD screen.
4. Insert the supplied white balance calibration card in the scanner as indicated by the arrow.
5. The scanner will start scanning the calibration card. During scanning process, it will pause, the
power button will then illuminate in red. When the red LED turns o, the scanner will nish
scanning the white balance calibration card.
6. Press and hold the [ POWER ] button to power o the scanner and to complete calibration.

7. Use with computer
7.1. Connecting to a computer
Using the supplied USB cable, the scanner can be connected to a computer to transfer pictures from
the memory card to the computer or view the images on the computer screen.
No drivers have to be installed as the scanner is recognized as a USB removable storage device for
which drivers have been preinstalled for all Windows systems (2000, XP, Vista, 7 or 8). The scanner
can also be connected to Mac systems from OS 10.4 onwards.
As soon as the devices have been connected by the USB cable press the ENTER key on the switched-
on scanner. The LCD display then shows “USB”.
The computer displays an additional drive named “Removable storage device” (Mac:”Unknown”),
through which les on the memory card used in the scanner can be accessed.
Remove cable from scanner to interrupt the USB connection. If the scanner contains charged batte-
ries, the scanner will change back to the Scan mode.
7.2. Installing the text recognition software
Using the supplied text recognition software ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint or ABBYY Screenshot
Reader, scanned documents can be converted to text again.
1. Insert the CD ROM supplied with the scanner in the CD/DVD drive of your computer. A welcome
screen appears.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Note:
• Backupanydatapriortoinstallingthesuppliedsoftware.
The manufacturer shall not be liable for any loss of data.
• Totransferdata,thescannercanalsobeconnectedtothecomputerwithoutinstallingthe
software.

7.3. Using the text recognition software
With the supplied programs ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint and ABBYY Screenshot Reader you have
various capabilities of converting your scanned text documents into text les. For this purpose the
documents must be present as JPEG le.
Before using both programs you must complete a free registration via ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint.
Therefore follow the instructions when rst starting the program.
7.3.1. ABBYY FineReader 9.0
Once you open the ABBYY FineReader 9.0
Sprint program, choose which document
you would like to edit. Therefore click“Get
Image from Folder” and choose if the text
shall be converted in a PDF document or
any other le type. Then choose the le
type in which the text is present. The con-
version will then start automatically.
After the text recognition has ended you
can choose a lename such as a le type in
which the document shall be saved.
If errors occur during the text recognition the program will allow you to choose and perform various
options from the section on the right side to improve the quality of your converted text. Click “Con-
vert” to nalize your selection and restart the text recognition.
Further information regarding the use of ABBYY FineReader 9.0 can be found within the help section
of the software.

7.3.2. ABBYY Screenshot Reader
To convert the text content of a scanned document, rst open the document with an image proces-
sing program. Then start the program ABBYY Screenshot reader and enter the settings required for
text recognition.
Under “Capture” specify the area of the computer screen to be recognized: a framed area, a program
window or the entire screen. Under the “Language” option state the language of the document to
be recognized. Under the “Send” option you can determine how the recognized text is to be pro-
cessed further.
Note:
• Inordertoensurethebestpossibletextrecognition,documentsshouldbescannedwith
a high resolution (HI) and in b/w (MONO). Also check that the document is fed in straight
when scanning.
• Todisplaythescanneddocumentuseanimageprocessingprogramandenlargethetext
area of the document so that it is displayed at maximum size on screen.
• Documentsscannedinlandscapeorupsidedownmustbealignedcorrectlybyrotating
prior to text recognition.
• Ifthedocumentdisplayonscreenistoosmall,resultinginaconsiderablenumberoferrors
in the text recognition, the document should be recognized in two or three parts.
