DON'T ABUSE CORD. Never carry tool bycordor yank

todisconnect from
receptacle. Keep cord from heat, oil, and sharp edges.
SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to hold work. It's safer than using
your hand and

frees both hands to operate tool.
DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp and clean for better and
safer performance. Follow instructionsfor lubricating and changing acces-
sories. Inspecttoolcordsperiodicallyandifdamaged, have repairedby autho-
rized service facility. Inspect extension cords periodically and replace if
damaged. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from
oil
and grease.

Charging
Connect the charging plug to the charging
connector, then plug in the charger to the
power receptacle.Chargingtakes

hours.
CAUTION:
The battery in your new tool is not fully
charged. You will need to charge it before
use.
Do
notoperatethetool duringcharging.
Overcharging more than

days consider-
ably shortens the battery service life.
Always unplug the charger after completing the charge.

Installing
or
removingdriver
bit
CAUTION
:
When installing or removingthe bit, be careful not totouch the trigger switch.
To install the bit, place
it
in the chuck
as
far
as
it
will go. Tighten the chuck
by
hand. Place the chuck key in each of the
three holes and tighten clockwise.
Be sure to tighten
all
three chuck holes
evenly.
To
remove the bit, turn the chuck key
counterclockwise
in
just one hole, then
loosenthe chuck by hand.

After use, return the chuck key to the
stroragecavity on the tool.

Holding
tool
When drilling
a
large diameter hole, holdthe tool firmly with both hands.
Switchaction
To
start the tool, simply pull the trigger.
Release
the trigger tostop.
Reversingswitch action
This tool has
a
reversing switch to change
the direction of rotation. Slide the revers-
ing switch to the right for clockwise rota-
tion or to the left for counterclockwise.

CAUTION
:
Always check the direction of rotation beforeoperation.
.Use the reversing switch only when the tool comes to
a
complete stop. Changing the
direction of rotationbeforethe tool stops may ruin the tool.
Drillingoperation

Drilling inwood
When drilling in wood, best results are obtainedwith wood drills equippedwith
a
guide
screw. The guide screw makes drilling easier by pullingthe bit intothe workpiece.
To prevent the bitfrom slippingwhen startinga hole, makean indentationwith
a
center-
punch and hammer
at
the point to be drilled.
Place
the point of the bit in the indenta-
tion and startdrilling.
Use
a
cutting lubricant when drilling metals. The exceptions are iron and brass which
should be drilleddry.

CAUTION
:
Pressingexcessively on the toolwill not speed upthe drilling. Infact, thisexcessive pres-
sure will only serve to damage the tip of your bit, decrease the tool performance and
shorten the service life of the tool.
-There
is
a
tremendous force exerted on the tool/bit
at
the time of hole breakthrough.
Hold the tool firmly and exert care when the bitbegins tobreak throughthe workpiece.

stuck bit can be removed simply by settingthe reversingswitch toreverse rotation in
order toback out. However,the tool may back out abruptly if you do nothold
it
firmly,

Always secure smallworkpieces in
a
vise
or similar hold-downdevice.
Screwdr
ivingoperation
Place
the point of the driver bit in the screw head and apply pressure to the tool. Start
the tool.
Release
the switch trigger just
as
the screw bottomsout. Ifthe switchtrigger
is
not released, the screw may strip out the hole
or
the screw and/or bitmay be damaged.

MAINTENANCE
CAUTION
:
Always be sure that the tool
is
switchedoff before attempting to perform inspectionor
maintenance.
To maintain product SAFETY and RELlABlLITY, repairs, maintenance or adjustment
should be performed by Makita Authorized or Factory Service Centers, always using
Makitareplacementparts.
DISPOSINGOF
TOOL
A nicad battery
is
built into the handle of this tool. Always remove
it
before disposing
of the tool.
Removing
built-inbattery
CAUTION
:
Never remove the built-inbattery from the tool except when disposing of the tool. The
batterywill be damaged or
a
batteryshort-circuit couldresult.
To remove the cover, push
it
in the direc-
tion of the arrow while pressing down on
the "OPEN" portion of the cover.
Cover
Withdraw the built-inbattery halfway. Dis-
connect the
two
lead wires from the
battery by pulling them from the battery
terminals. Then withdraw the battery com-
pletely.
To
prevent
a
battery short-circuit, tape the battery terminals or put the battery into
a
plastics bag. (Note: Never put two or more batteriesintoone plasticsbag. Batteryshort-
circuit may result.)
CAUTION
:
Never incinerate the battery even if
it
is
severely damaged or
is
completely worn out.
It
can explode in
a
fire or toxic materialscan leak out of
it.

Recycling
the
battery
The only way to dispose
of
a Makitabattery isto recycle
it.
The lawprohibits any other method
of
disposal.
To
recyclethe battery:
1.
Removethe batteryfrom the
tool.
2.
(a) Take the batteryto your nearestMakitaFactory ServiceCenter.
or
(b) Take the battery to your nearest MakitaAuthorizedService Center or Distributor that
hasbeendesignatedas a Makitabatteryrecyclinglocation.
Call your nearest Makita Service Center or Distributor to determine the location that
provides Makita battery recycling. Seeyour local yellow pages under “Tools
-
Electric.”
