The GMR1000 is a compact time and frequency generator/server that can reference
a variety of timing sources and provide a range of outputs to meet customer needs.
The base model includes both NTP client and server functionality compatible within
IPv4/IPv6 networks and oering Secure-Socket-Host (SSH) encrpyption for secure
communications. Properly congured and using standard NTP polling rates, the device
can support and synchronize hundreds of thousands of NTP clients.

The GMR5000 is a 1U rack mount time and frequency generator/server that can reference a variety of timing sources and provide a

ANTENNA OPTIONS
The GPS and GPS+GLONASS receiver options for the GMR Series of master clocks provide precision time reference based on satellite
broadcasts, achieving Stratum 1 synchronization. PPS on-time output is locked to the top of each second. Three antenna options are
available for both standard and mobile applications.

Masterclock oers three high-stability oscillator options for the GMR Series.When locked to GPS, the OCXO 10 MHz sine wave frequency
will have the same long-term stability as an atomic clock.When not tied to GPS, a precision frequency 10 MHz reference output is
available as a source for laboratory use or for an RF reference, including cellular applications.The HSO option is required for all

managementsoftwareapplicationwhichworkswithallMasterclockbrandnetworkdevices.Itoperatesunder
mostWindows‐basedoperatingsystems.
TELNETANDSECURESHELL(SSH)INTERFACES
Telnet,aterminal‐stylecommandlineinterface,isusedonnetworksthatarenotWindows‐based(i.e.Linuxand
UNIX).TheTelnetinterfacemaybedisabled.SecureShell(SSH)isacommandlineinterfacethatencryptsdata.
CONFIGURATIONSAVEDVIABATTERY‐BACKEDRTC
TheGMRmaintainsitsinternaltimesettingsinbattery‐backedmemorylocatedonanRTC(RealTimeClock)chip,
whichprovidesfreewheelingaccuracy(maximumdrift)downto±165ms/day.Abuilt‐inbatterysuppliespower,
for6‐9months,totheRTCwhentheunitispoweredoff.Thisallowstheinternaltimetobemaintainedandthe
timeanddatetoincrementwheneverpowerisremoved.
Thebatteryisarechargeablemanganeselithiumtype.Abuilt‐inbatterychargingcircuitisusedwhentheunitis
normallypowered,eliminatingtheneedformaintenance.
PASSWORDPROTECTION
TheGMRisprovidedwithapasswordforsecurity.EachMasterclocknetworkdevicerequiresapasswordthat
mustbeenteredbeforethedevicewillacceptconfigurationchanges.Eachdevice,orsetofdevices,canhavea
uniquepasswordortheycanallsharethesameone.Thepasswordcanbechangedandretainedtopermitaccess
onlytoauthorizedusers.
Apasswordcanbeamaximumof11charactersandmaycontainanysequenceofletters,numbers,andcommon
punctuation.Passwordsarecase‐sensitive.

U.S.NavalObservatory,andisdeterminedusinghighlypreciseatomicclocks.TheUTCscaleiscoordinatedinParis
bytheInternationalBureauofWeightsandMeasures(BIPM).
UTCrunsattherateoftheatomicclocks,butwhenthedifferencebetweenthisatomictimeandonebasedonthe
Earthapproachesonesecond,aonesecondadjustment(a"leapsecond")ismadeinUTC.
UTCisthelocaltimeattheprimereferencemeridianatGreenwich,England.Atagivenlocationontheplanet,
localtimecanbedisplaced(referencedtoUTC)by‐11to+12hours.NorthandSouthAmericaarefrom‐3to‐11
hoursdelayed;mostofEuropeandAfricaandallofAsiaandAustraliaareadvancedby+1to+12hours.Because
theNTPtimedistributionstandardoperateswithUTC‐referencetimeonly,timezoneand/ordaylightsavings

DHCPAuto‐Configuration
DHCP(DynamicHostConfigurationProtocol)isamechanismforautomatingtheconfigurationofnetworked
devicesthatuseTCP/IP.WhenDHCPisenabled,DHCPconfigurationacquisitionwilloverwriteanymanual
configurationitems.
TheGMRcanobtainitsnetworkconfigurationautomaticallyfromDHCP,whenoneortheotherisavailableonthe
network.UtilizingDHCP,theGMRwillautomaticallybeassigneditsnetworkconfiguration.ThisincludesanIP
addressandadditionalfunctions,suchasDNSserverandRouter/Gatewaysettings.Thisfeatureisenabledby
default.AGMRnetworkdevicewillnotfunctionproperlyifconfiguredtouseDHCPserviceswhennoDHCPserver
ispresentonthenetwork.IfnoDHCPserverispresent,thedevicewilluseafallbackIPaddress:169.254.xxx.yyy
wherexxxandyyyarethelasttwobytesoftheMACaddress.
TheGMRcanautomaticallyobtainTimeZoneOffsetconfigurationandtheNTPserveraddresses(primaryand
secondary).ToutilizethesefeaturestheDHCPserverofthenetworkmustbepre‐configuredwiththeappropriate
checklistitems.Factorydefault:DHCPenabled.
LongDHCPnamesarenotsupported.Onlythefirst14charactersofthedevicenamewillberegisteredbythe
DHCPserver.
TheIPaddressoftheunitisrequiredtoconfiguretheGMRwithSSHorTelnet.TheDHCPservercanbeutilizedto
providetheIPaddressoftheassociateddevicenamethatisregistered.

TheGMRisavailableinmultipleconfigurationstofitalmostanyneedwithconfigurablemodulesandsoftware

AUSBtypeBporthasbeenincludedontherearoftheGMR1000andthefrontoftheGMR5000toprovidea
meansofconfiguringtheoperationviaWinDiscovery.Touseit,connectaUSBtypeA/Bcablefromthehost
computertotheGMR.
Beforetheunitcanbeconfigured,thedevicedriversmustbeloaded.Thesoftwareconfigurationprogram
WinDiscoveryandUSBdrivershavebeenprovidedonaCDwiththedevice.
InstallingUSBdrivers:PoweruptheGMR,inserttheWinDiscoveryCDintothePC,andcompleteitsinstallation.
ConnecttheGMRtothePCwithaUSBcable.TheWindowsPlugandPlayManagerwilldetecttheGMRand
requestdrivers.Selecttheoptionto“Installfromalistorspecificlocation[Advanced]”thenbrowsetothe
Driversfolderasdetailedontheleft.ThewizardwillinstallthemandthentheGMRcanbeaccessedvia
WinDiscovery.ThenexttimeyouconnectaMasterclockdeviceviaUSByouwillNOThavetoinstallthedrivers
again.

BeforeinstallingaGMRonanetworkoneshouldbepreparedwithbasicconfigurationinformation(seeboxat
left).Youmayneedtoaskyournetworkadministratorforthis.

Makeallconnectionsattherearoftheunit,butkeepthepowerdisconnecteduntilthelaststep.
ConnecttheGMRdevicetoyourLAN(LocalAreaNetwork)hub/router/switchusingCat5cablemakingthe
connectiontotheRJ45connectorlabeledETHERNET
MakeanyadditionaldesiredinputandoutputconnectionstotheDB9connectorlabeledRS‐232usingeither
yourowncableoranoptionalDB9breakoutadapter(ontheGMR1000only).
InserttheWinDiscoveryCDintoacomputerrunningWindowsXP,7,8,or10(VistasupportedonlyinXP
compatibilitymode).TheInstallShieldapplicationwillbeginautomaticallyifAutoRunisenabledonyour
system.Otherwise,browsetotheCDrootdirectlyandclickthefileSetup_WinDiscovery.exetobeginthe
installer.
Applypower.ForaGMR5000connectthesuppliedACpowercordbetweenanACpowersourceandtheIEC
jackonthebackofthedevice.ForaGMR1000insertthesuppliedAC/DCpowersupplymoduleintoan
appropriateACpowersourceandtheDCpowerconnectorintothemaleSwitchcraft‐stylelockingpower
socketontherearoftheunitlabeledDCIN9‐28VDC.
IfdesiredtheGMR1000canbeoperatedfromanominal12‐VDCsupplysuchasabattery(9‐28VDCrange).
