Thismanualprovidesinformationonthesafeoperation,servicingand
repairofthefollowingmodelsof MASTERPAChandheldhydraulic
breakers:PAV20/20
Themanualalsoprovideshintsfor operators,butisnotintendedasa
trainingmanual.
All operatorsandoperators employersshouldensurethatusersare
adequatelytrainedin theuseofthisequipment.Itcanbelethalif
usedincorrectly
PAV20/20 breakerneedtobeoperatedfrom ahydraulicpowerpack
givingaflowof 20litresperminuteandcapableof operatingat138
bar.Thiscomplieswith theEHTMA ‘Ccategory.They may beused
from anypowerpack displayingthegreen EHTMA triangle
surroundingagreenletter ‘C.

lBeawareofthedangersof collapsewhen workingclosetobanks

lNeverallowthepoint of asteeltorestagainstor befacingthe
direction ofanypartofthebody.
lFinejetsofhydraulicoil canpenetratetheskin.Checkfor leaksby
holdingapieceofcardboardneartothesuspectarea.Ifhydraulic
oil doespenetratetheskin or isingestedseekmedicalhelp
immediately.
lNeverattempttodismantlethepressureaccumulator.
lAlwaysisolatehydraulicsupplybeforemakingadisconnectionor
connection.
lDonotattempttomodifytheequipmentinany way.Thiscould
result in a
dangerousproductandwill invalidatethewarranty.
lAlwayscomply with localandsitesafetyregulations.
lWhen fittingandremovingsteelsensurethecontrolvalveatthe
hydraulicsupplyisinthe ‘OFF position.Ifnocontrolvalveisfitted
theenginemustbestopped.
lNeveroperatethebreakerunless thesteelisincontactwiththe
work piece.
lDonotusesteelsthatareworn attheirshank.Bluntedsteels
shouldbe
sharpenedbeforeuse.

lNeveroperatethisequipmentwhilstundertheinfluenceofdrugs,
alcoholor medication,or when tiredor fatigued.
lKeepthebreakerhandlesdry,cleanandfree ofoil andgrease.
lEnsurethatthehoseswill notcreateatrippinghazardIn freezing
conditionsstorebreakersandtoolsin awarmbuilding. Breakages
can occurduetomaterialsbecomingbrittleinsub-zero
temperatures
lIf usingin apotentiallyexplosiveor flammableatmospherespark
resistant steelshouldbefitted.
lThisequipmentmustbeusedonlyforthepurposeforwhich
itwasdesigned. Useoutsidethesedesignlimitsmustfirst
beagreedinwritingwiththemanufacturer.
lFittingandChangingSteel
lIsolatebreakerfrom powerpack.
lLay thebreakeronitsside
lSwingthelatch downtoreleasethesteel.
lRemovethesteelandinserttherequiredsteel.
lInthecaseofsteelswith anedge(e.g. chiselsandasphalt cutters
etc)ensurethey areinsertedinthecorrectorientation.
lSwingthelatchfullyupwards.
lIf fittingatampingfootthismaybedonewith thetampingfoot
restingverticallyontheground. Holdthebreakerupright,pushthe
latchdown;liftbreakerandplaceovertampingfoot,returnlatchto
lockposition.
lRemovingatampingfootmay becarriedout in theopposite
sequencetotheabove.
lSwitch onor reconnectsupply.
lConnectingtoandDisconnectingfromHydraulicSupply
lCheckthatthehydraulicsupplymatchestherequirementsof the
breaker.
lCheckthattheflowandreturnhosesareconnectedtothecorrect
ports.Arrowsadjacent toeach portin thebreakerheadindicate
flowdirections.Shouldthesebeunclear,thetopportisreturnflow
andthelowerportissupply flow.Flowisalwaysout ofmale
couplingsandintofemalecouplings.
lMakesurethecouplingsareclean.Connectmaletofemale.They

areof thequick releasetype.Ensurethey arelockedcorrectly.
Beforedisconnectingalwaysfirstisolatethehydraulicsupply (see
hydraulicpowerpackoperatingmanual).Todisconnect,pull back
on theknurledringsofthecoupling.Somecouplingsrequirethe
knurledringtoberotatedtotheunlockedpositionbeforetheycan
bepulledbacktorelease.
lFitrubberdustcapsoverthecouplingstokeepthemclean.
lUsingtheBreaker
lBeforeusingthebreakerreadthesection entitledSAFETY.It
shouldalsobenotedthattheseworkingmethodsareaguideonly
andarenosubstitutefor correcttraining.Thisbreakerisdesigned
for breakingstone,concrete,tarmac andsimilarmaterials,for
cuttingintosoftermaterialssuch as asphalt,clay andfrozen
groundandfor compaction.Inall casesthecorrecttoolsteelmust
beused. Thebreakermustnotbeusedfor anythingelse.
lStartthepowerpack accordingtoappropriateinstructions.
lPositionthesteelat90°tothesurfacetobebroken.
lAdoptastablestance;legsslightlyapartandfeetclearofthesteel
with thebody upright.
lDonotoverreach.
lTocommencebreaking, simultaneously depress therelease
triggerandtheoperatingtriggerwhilstpressingdown onthe
breakerwithsufficientforcetopreventit from bouncing. If the
operatingtriggerisonlypartlydepressedthebreakerwill givea
lighterblowwhichisidealfor ‘markingout for theinitial
penetrationofveryhardsurfaces.Donotcontinueononeplacefor
longerthanabout15seconds.Ifthematerialhas notbrokenmove
toanotherbut adjacentposition.
lWhen breakingconcreteor hardor frozen groundneverleverthe
materialwhilstcontinuingtooperatethebreaker.
lReleasethetriggeras soonas thematerialhas broken.
lTurn off theoil supply andstoptheengineif thebreakerisnot
beingusedfor anylength oftime.
lDonotattempttodisconnecthosesunless theoil supply
hasbeenturnedoff.
lDonotstandthebreakerupsidedownunless thehydraulicoil
supplyhas beenisolated.

lDonotoperatethebreakerunless thebreakerandsteelare
pressedagainstthesurfacetobebroken.
lAfterprolongedusagevibrationfrom breakersmay causeyour
fingerstotingle.Wearglovestokeepthehandswarm.Ensureyour
body iswarm.Shorten theperiodofoperation.Massageand
exercisethefingersduringbreaks.Consumehotdrinksifthe
weatheriscold. Avoidor cutdownon smoking. If symptoms
persistseekmedicaladvice.
lIf atoolhas jammedin thework piecedonottrytoleverit free.
Pull thebreakerupwardswhilstcontinuingtodepress thetrigger.
If thisdoesnotwork removethebreakerfrom thesteel,insert
anothersteelandbreakaroundthejammedsteeltofreeit.
lFor useunderwaterfirstconsult themanufactureror theiragent.
lBeforeassumingthatthereisafault in thebreakeralwayscheck
morebasicandobviouscausesofit failingtooperate:
lArethehosescoupledcorrectly?
lIs theflowturnedon atthesupply source?
lArethereanyblockagesin hosesandcouplings?
lIs thereanythingpreventingtheoperatingtriggerfrombeingfully
depressed?
lIs thesupplysourcedeliveringfullflowandpressure(see hydraulic
powerpack operatingmanual)?
lBREAKER DOESNOTSTRIKE
lPossiblejammedpistonorstickingoscillatorspool
lWith toolinserted, pushharddown on breakerandpress trigger.
Thismightfreethepistonor freeastickingoscillator spool.
lIncorrectlyoperatingtriggerorstarterspool
lCheckthatthetriggercanbefullydepressedor thatit hasnotbeen
distortedsothatitisunabletofullydepress thestarterspool.
lStarterspool fixingpin(s) brokenallowingthrustrodto
movethroughstarterspool.
lDismantleandcheck.

lRemoveandcheck.
lIfsymptomscannotbecuredthebreakerwill requirestrippingand
repairing.

Thebreakerisself-lubricatingandrequiresnoroutineservicingother

DailyRoutinechecksshouldalsobemadetoensurethetoollatchis
notworn andengagesfullytoholdthetoolsteelin place.
General
Theinternalmovingpartsinthebreakerandtheirassociated
assembliesaremachinedtoaveryhighdegree ofaccuracyandfinish.
On certain itemsthedegree of accuracyof fit necessitatesselecting
partstomakeupamatchedassembly andmayonly beavailableas
matchedsets.
Toensurecontinuedreliability,servicingshouldonlybycarriedoutby
askilledfitterwhoisexperiencedinworkingonhydraulics
components.
Itisrecommendedthatapurposebuiltsupportstand, boltedtothe
floor,incorporatingan oil tray andhexagon stemtosupportthe

breakerbeusedfor dismantlingwork.
Alternatively,abreakersteelgrippedin alowvicemay beused.
Thefollowinggeneralprecautionsmustbeobservedwhen servicing
hydraulicbreakers:
lAbsolutecleanliness isessential.Mosthydraulicfailuresare
causedbytheingress of dirt.
lBeforedismantlingacomponent,cleanexternalsurfacesand
drainall fluid.
lWhen holdingcomponentsin avice,fit softmetalpadsoverthe
vicejawstoprevent damageanddistortiontoprecisionsurfaces
andbores.
lAll partsshouldbelaidouton aclean resilientsurface.Special
attention shouldbepaidtotheidentification ofpartsandtheir
dismantlingsequence.
lAll dismantledmetalpartsshouldbewashedinacleaningsolvent
andcoatedwith hydraulicfluid.
lAll solvent cleanersinusemustbeapprovedbythesafety
management of thecompany wheretheworkisbeingcarriedout
andtheCOSHHregulationsreadandunderstood.
lItisrecommendedthatall disturbedsealsberenewed.Ifasealis
reused, itshouldbeclosely examinedfor cuts,flawsor wear.A
sealthatissuspectshouldneverbereused.
lAll internalmetalpartsandsealsshouldbelightly coatedwith
cleanhydraulicoilor alithium basedno.2gradegreasebefore
assembly.Thisassistsin assemblyandlessenstherisk ofseal
damage.Useonlysealsprovidedincomponent servicekits,which
areobtainablefromMasterpacEngineeringCo.,Ltdortheiragents,
as thesewill beof adifferentcomposition andhardness toseals
normally commercially available.
HydraulicPipesandHoses
When removingandreplacingrigidpipesandflexiblehosesthe
followingpointsshouldbeobserved:
lUseadjustableor open-endedspannersonendconnectionsand
fittings.Donotusepipewrenchesas thesedamagefittingsand
protectiveplating.
lEnsuretheparticularconnection anditssurroundingareais
clean.
ServiceTools
Useofthecorrectservicetoolscontributestoanefficient,economic

andreliablerepair.
Referencestoappropriatetoolsaremadethroughoutthemanual.
Self-LockingNuts
Thesemustnotbereused.
ThreadLockingCompound
Usethegradeofcompoundrecommended. Cleananddegreasethe
jointor threadsbeforeapplication.

2.Removetheacornnut(65)、completewith theM12 bonded

3.Removethetwocapscrews(71)securingtheheadtothecylinder.。
4.Screwoneofthecapheadscrewsremovedin operation3intothe
centralholein theheadanduseit asajackingscrewtoliftupthehead
from thecylinderandtheoscillator assembly(69)。
5.Liftaway theheadandremovethejackingscrew.
6.Pushthestarterspoolrod(70)downwardtoremovethestarter
spoolassembly.Thetopglandofthestarterspoolassemblywill
remainin thehead. Thismayberemovedbypushingupwardswith a
driftof suitablediameter.For moredetailsonthestarterspoolsee
section 10.7.2.
7.Removeoscillator spoolassembly(7),dismantle,cleanandcheck
condition.Ifscored, badlywornor thespooldoesnotmovefreely,the
entireassembly will needreplacing. Seesection10.7.1for more
details.

1.Removeanddiscardthe ‘Oringon topof theinjector.
2.Priseouttheinjector usingapairof screwdriversaslevers.Take
greatcarenottodamagetheinjector.Removeanddiscardthe
remaining ‘Orings.
3.removethespiral-retainingring(27)usingapairof small
screwdrivers,onetoeasetheendoftheringoutofthegroove
andtheothertoeaseitupwards.Continueinthiswaytoeaseout
thecompletering.
4.Removethepinchboltnutsholdingthenoseontothecylinder.(26)。
5.Removethepinchbolts.
6.Removecylinder(6)from nose.(25),If thenoseistightonthe
cylinderdrivingawedgeintotheslotmay easethis.
7.Gentlypriseoutthesealhousing.(24)。
8.Removethepiston(21)bypushingit upwards.。
9.Examinesurfacesofpiston.Cylinderandinjector.Componentsand
theirmatingparts,which areworn or deeply scored, mustbe
renewed. Slightscratchesmaybepolishedoutwith metalpolish.

If thecolourofthesealinthesealhousingof thebreakerbeing
dismantledisdark bluetheentiresealhousingassembly should
beexchangedfor themostrecent assemblyas detailed(24).The
colourofthesealinthenewsealhousingislimegreen.Itis
stronglyrecommendedthatifasealneedsreplacingtheentire
nosesealassemblyshouldbereplaced, astherewill besignificant
weartoall components.Whenreplacinganosesealassembly
alwaysreplacethe ‘Oring(19)in thenoseof thecylinder.
8.7NoseSealAssembly(RefertoSection10.5:PAV20/20.06Nose
SealAssembly)
See section10.4for informationon removalofthenoseassembly
from thecylinder.
Toremovethelatch(29),firstdriveouttheinnerroll pin(33)witha
suitablediameterdriftandthentheouterroll pin(32).When
removingthedriftusedtodriveout theouterroll pinbecarefulto
restrainthelatch andplunger(28)thatmayflyout duetothe
compressionforceinthelatch spring.
Thehexagon bush(31)isanextremely tightfit anditsremovaland
replacementmay bebeyondthescopeof mostworkshopfacilities.
Serviceexchangeunitsareavailable.Ifreplacingthebush,ensurethe
orientationiscorrectsothatwhenedgesteel,for exampleaclay
spade,isfittedthesteelisin therightposition.
Reassembly isgenerallythereverseofdismantlingprocedures.
Wheretherearespecificpointstobeawareofthesearenotedin the
followingsections.Attentionmustalsobepaidtotheprocedures
notedon section7,ServicingandMaintenance.
9.1NoseSealAssembly(RefertoSection10.5:PAV20/20.06
NoseSeal Assembly)
1.When refittingalatch,checkitsoperation with steellocatedinthe
nose,afterfittingtheouterrollpin.Ifthefunctioniscorrectfitthe
innerroll pinwithitssplitontheoppositesidetothatoftheouter
pinandcheck itsfunction again.
2.See section10.1for instructionsregardingfittingthenoseassembly
tothecylinder.
9.2CylinderAssembly(refertosections10.4,PAV20/20.03 Cylinder
Assembly)
1、Discardall original ‘Oringsandsealsandreplacewith new.
2、Thoroughlywash all metalpartsin an approvedsolvent cleaner.
3、Thoroughlydryall partsandplacethemonacleansurface.Ifthe
partsarenottobeusedimmediatelythey shouldbecovered.

4、Standcylinderverticallywith thelargerdiameteruppermost.
5、Insertpistonintothecylinderandallowpiston toreston same
surfaceas thaton whichthecylinderisresting.
6、Graspthecylinderatthetopwithbothhandsandraiseandlower
it afewtimestocheckthefree fallof thepiston.If thereisany
feelingsoftightnessor grittiness removethepiston,rewash both
partsandthoroughly examinefor scratching, bruisingor other
damage.
7、Removethepistoncarefully.
8、Applylithiumno.2greasetothenose ‘Oring(19)andinsertinto
grooveatnoseofcylinder.
9、Apply lithiumno.2greasetotheoutsideofthenoseseal
assembly(24)andinsertintocylinder.
10、Applylithiumno.2greasetothe ‘Oring(22),whichfitsinthetop
of thepistonboreandlocateingroove.
11、FitPTFEring(20)intogroove.Thefittingofthisringcan be
simplifiedbyformingit intoa‘Cshapeandtheninsertingitintothe
grooveandthen pressingitbacktothe ‘Oring.
12、Checkthattheinjector(8)fitsintotheboreofthecylinderandcan
bemovedupanddownwithout afeelingof tightness or grittiness.
Removetheinjector.
13、Apply asmearofhydraulicoil totheoutsideofthepiston and
insertintothecylinderandforceitpastthenoseseal.
14.Lightlycoatinjector stemwith hydraulicoilandinsertintocylinder.
Press down sothatlowermost ‘Oringoninjector enterstopof
cylinder.
15.Donotfit anyfurther ‘Oringsor thespringandcapatthisstage.
9.3FittingCylindertoNose(refertosection 10.5PAV20/20.06
Nose Assembly)
1.Placenoseassembly ontosupporttoolthatwasusedfor the
dismantlingoperation.Insertcylinderassembly intonosewithbolt
groovesinthecylinderin linewiththeboltholesinnose.
2.ApplyLoctite242 or equivalenttothethreadsoftheM12(26)pinch
boltsandtighten toatorqueof 41Nm(30lbft).
3.FitnewM12Nylocnuts(27)toprojectingthreadsofpinchbolts(26)
andhandtightenusingawrenchtoholdtheM12 pinchbolts(27).

10.Carefullyplacetheheadovertheoscillator assemblyensuringthe
starterspoolthrustrodenterstherecessinthespringcapin the
cylinderandpush down.
11.InsertthetwoM12holdingdownbolts(71).Screwinuntil slackis
takenupandthentighteneachaquarterturn atatimetoclosegap
betweenheadandcylinder.Continuetotighten boltseachaquarter
turn atatimewith atorquewrenchuntiltightenedtoatorqueof
95Nm (74lbft).
12.ApplyLoctite542or equivalenttothecentregrubscrew(66)and
fitit tothehead. Tightento13.5Nm (10lbft).Fit bondedseal(67)
acorn nut (65).

2.Fit ‘Oringtoaccumulator thread. Itisadvisabletoprotectthe

3.Apply Loctite542 or equivalenttotheaccumulator threads.
4.Screwintheaccumulator andtightenusinga ‘Cspanner.
5.Useasoft-facedhammertofinallytightenthe ‘Cspanner.
6.Apply Loctite542or equivalenttothegrubscrew(64)(section
