3 .2 .4 . Sle e p Modes

Sleep Modes en ab le t h e m odem t o ent er st at es of low- pow er con sum pt ion wh en n ot in use. Th ree
soft ware Sleep Modes are support ed:
• Pin Sleep ( Host Con t rolled)
• Serial Port Sleep ( Wake on Serial Por t act ivit y)
• Cyclic Sleep ( Wake on RF act iv it y )
I n order t o ent er Sleep Mode, one of t he following condit ions m u st be m et ( in addit ion t o t h e
m odem having a non- zero SM param et er value) :
Once in Sleep Mode, t he radio m odem does not t ransm it or receive dat a unt il it first ret urns t o I dle
Mode. The r et ur n int o I dle Mode is t riggered by t he de- assert ion of the Sleep pin or the ar rival of a
ser ial byt e thr ough Dat a I n pin.
The SM ( Sleep Mode) com m and is cent ral t o sett ing all Sleep Mode configurations. By default,
Sleep Mod es ar e disabled ( SM = 0 ) and t h e m odem r em ain s in I dle/ Receiv e Mode. When in t his
st ate, t he m odem rem ains const ant ly r eady to respond t o serial or RF act ivity.
Pin Sle ep ( SM = 1 )
• Pin/ Host- cont rolled
< Lowest Pow er Configurat ion> I n order to achieve t his low - pow er st at e, Pin 2 m ust be assert ed
( high) . The m odem rem ains in Pin Sleep unt il the Sleep pin is de-asser ted. The m odem will com -
plet e a t ransm ission or recept ion before activat ing Pin Sleep.
Aft er enabling Pin Sleep ( SM (Sleep Mode) Param et er = 1 ) , Pin 2 cont rols w het her t he XCit e Mod-
ule is act ive or in Sleep Mode. When Pin 2 is asser t ed ( high ) , t h e m odem t r ansit ions t o Sleep Mode
and r em ains in it s low est power- consum ing st ate u nt il t he Sleep pin is de- asser t ed . Th e XCit e
Module requires 40m s t o t ransit ion fr om Sleep Mode t o I dle Mode. Pin 2 is only act ive if t he
m odem is set up t o operat e in t his m ode; ot herw ise t he pin is ignored. Once in Pin Sleep Mode,
CTS is de- asser t ed ( high) , indicat ing t h at dat a should not be sent t o the m odem . The PWR pin is
also de- assert ed ( low ) when t he m odem is in Pin Sleep Mode
Note: The modem will complete a transmission or reception before activating Pin Sleep.
Seria l Por t Sle ep ( SM = 2 )
• Wake on serial port act ivit y
Serial Port Sleep is a Sleep Mode set ting in which t he modem ru ns in a low pow er st at e unt il dat a
is detect ed on the DI pin.
When Ser ial Por t Sleep is enabled, t he m odem goes into Sleep Mode aft er a u ser- defined per iod of
inactivit y ( no transm itting or receiving of data) . This period of t im e is det er m in ed by ST ( Tim e
befor e Sleep) Com m and. The m odem ret urns to I dle Mode once a character is received through
the DI pin.
Cyclic Slee p ( SM = 3 - 8 )
Cyclic Sleep is t he Sleep Mode set ting in w hich t he XCit e Module enters int o a low pow er st ate and
aw ak en s per iodically t o det er m in e if any t r an sm ission s ar e bein g sent .
When Cyclic Sleep set t ings ar e enabled, t he XCit e Module goes int o Sleep Mode after a user-
def in ed per iod of inact iv it y ( n o t ran sm ission or r ecept ion on t he RF ch annel) . The user - def ined
per iod is det erm ined by ST Param et er. [ See ST ( Tim e befor e Sleep) Par am et er ]
While t he m odem is in a low- power st at e, CTS de- asser t ed ( h igh ) t o in dicat e t h at dat a shou ld not
be sent t o t he m odem during t his t im e. When t he m odem awak ens t o listen for dat a, CTS is
asser t ed and any dat a received on t he DI Pin is t ransm it t ed . The PWR pin is also de- asser t ed ( low )
w hen t he m odem is in Cy clic Sleep Mod e. Th ese pins ar e asser t ed each t im e t h e m odem cy cles
1. Th e m odem is idle ( no d at a t r an sm ission or recept ion) for t he am ount of tim e defined by
t he ST ( Tim e befor e Sleep) param et er.
2. SLEEP pin is assert ed.
