GENERALDESCRIPTIONMAC1700
TheMAC1700isa stereoreceiver.Therearethree
easytousetopnotchstereocomponentsinonesmall
convenientpackage.A solidstatepreamplifier,a solid
statepoweramplifier,andanFMMPXstereotunerare
combinedtogiveyouthebestperformancepossible.
Theresultisa compact,easytousestereoinstrument.
Astereoinstrumentthatbringsyouthebestinalltypes
ofstereolistening.
Aloudnesscontrolallowsyoutolistentomusicatlow
listeninglevelsandstillhearthefullrichsoundofmusic.
Thereisa filterwhichletsyouminimizenoiseandrumble
fromprogramsources.A tapemonitorswitchletsyou
monitorrecordingsinprogress.Buttheprimefunction
ofa preamplifieristoreproducerecordsandtapes
withfullaccuracyandsonicrealism.YourMAC1700
doesrecreatemusicfromrecordsandtapeswitha
degreeofaccuracythoughtimpossiblea fewshort
yearsago.Recordsandtapesaremadewiththebass
frequenciescutandthehighsboosted.Thisallows
moremusicalinformationtobeputontherecordor
tape.TheMAC1700reintroducesthebassandthe
highsfollowingaccurateanddefinitestandards.Your
recordsandtapessoundaliveandthrillingwhenyou
hearthemthroughyourMAC1700.Sixteensilicon
planartransistorsareusedinthepreamplifier.Silicon
planartransistorsareusedbecauseoftheirhigh
thermalstability,lownoise,andsuperiorhighfre-
quencyresponse.
POWERAMPLIFIER
YourMAC1700delivers40wattsofpowerwithboth
channelsoperating.Thisis40wattsofsteadystate
power.YourMAC1700delivers40wattsofpower
hoursonend.Distortionat40wattsislessthan¼ of
1% atanyfrequencyfrom30to20,000cps.These
measurementsaremadebytestingsinewavepower.
Asinewavesignalisfedintotheamplifierata voltage
sufficienttodrivetheamplifieratratedpoweroutput.
Thendistortionismeasuredatfullratedpowerwith
bothchannelsoperatingintoanimpedanceof8 ohms.
Distortionmustbelessthan¼ of1 % from30to
20,000cps.OnlythenisyourMAC1700readyfor
you.Atlessthanfullpowerdistortionbecomessosmall
itcanbemeasuredbyonlythemostsophisticated
laboratoryinstruments.OnlyMclntoshgivesyouthis
kindofperformance.
TheMAC1700givesyoua 2.5microvoltFMstereo
tuner.Thissensitivetunerbringsyouclear,noise-free
receptionfromdistantstations.Thetunersectionisa
superbproductofprideofcraftsmanship.Ina tuner

eachwiremustbeplacedcorrectly,eachleadmustbe
thepreciselengthandeachcapacitormustbeinan
exactposition.Soeachwire,eachcapacitor,eachlead
ischeckedandrecheckedformaximumperformance.
ThisassuresyouofthebestpossibleFMstereo
reception.
Thetunersectionusessixtubesandtwotransistors.
TubesasRFamplifiersstillgivemaximumsensitivity
withthegreatestoverloadprotection.
TheMPXsectionoftheMAC1 700uses2 transistors
andtwotubes.IntestaftertestthisparticularMPX
sectionout-performedallotherdesigns.Thechannel
separationoftheMPXsectionisbetterthanthechan-
nelseparationfoundwithmostphonocartridges.The
distortionoftheMPXsectionislessthanwhattheFCC
requiresFMstationstomaintain.Youwillhearallthere
istohearfromstereobroadcasts.
SPECIALFEATURES
Apoweroutputmonitoringcircuitpreventsfailureof
thepoweroutputtransistorsduetoa speakershort
circuit,opencircuit,orincorrectlowimpedance.
Alltransistorshavea safepowerdissipationarea.This
areaiscalledthe"safeoperatingarea."Ifa transistor
dissipatespowerbeyondits"safeoperatingarea"it
destroysitself.YourMAC1700hasa poweroutput
monitoringcircuitthatpreventstheoutputtransistors
fromexceedingtheir"safeoperatingarea."When
yourMAC1700operatesnormallythepowermonitor-
ingcircuithasnoeffectonsignalsgoingthroughthe
poweramplifier.If,however,thepowerdissipationin
theoutputtransistorsbecomesexcessiveduetospeaker
shortcircuit,opencircuit,ora very lowimpedance
load,themonitortransistorssensethisthroughsam-
plingdevicesintheoutputcircuit.Themonitortran-
sistorsrestrictthedrivetotheoutputtransistors.The
restrictingoperationofthepowermonitoringcircuitis
immediateforanyinputsignalorloadcombination.
Thisarrangementassurescompletecircuitreliabilityfor
allloadconditions.Themonitoringcircuitprovides
anextramarginofprotectionforyourMAC1 700.The
monitoringcircuitpreventsfailureofthepoweroutput
transistorsduetoshortcircuit,opencircuit,orincorrect
lowimpedanceload.
Thepowertransistorsaremountedonoversizedano-
dizedheatsinks.Theheatsinksassurea lawtempera-
tureforoperationofthetransistors.Iftemperatures
increaseduetoa shortedspeaker,orrestrictedventila-
tionthenanautomatictemperatureswitchturnsoffyour
MAC1700.TheswitchwillturnyourMAC1700on
againwhenthetemperaturehasdecreasedtoa value
suitablefornormaloperation.Thisadditionalfeature
givesyourMAC1700reliabilityunderthemostextreme
operatingconditions.Thepowertransistorsusedin
theoutputsectionofyourMAC1700areselectedfor
theirhighpowerdissipationcapability,widefrequency
response,andlarge"safeoperatingarea."Inaddi-
tion,eachpowertransistorisgivenfourseparatetests
beforeitisputinyourMAC1700.Thisadditional
testingassuresyouoffullratedpowerfrom30to
20,000cps.

Allowsufficientcabinetspaceforaircirculation.Minimum
internalcabinetdimensionsshouldbe157/16incheswide,
135/8inchesdeep,and4¼incheshigh.Thebackofthe
cabinetshouldbeleftasopenaspossibleforventilation.
Properventilationwillinsureyourreceivera longtroublefree
life.A fantocirculatetheairwillfurtherincreasethelifeof
yourreceiver.
TheMAC1 700installseasilyfromthefrontofthecabinetinto
apanelcutout.Frontpanelsofanythicknesscanbeused.
FourscrewsintothebottomoftheMAC1700throughthe
mountingshelfholdtheunitfirmlyinplace.Duetotheweight
oftheMAC1700werecommendtheunitrestona wooden

ThemegacyclescaleindicatesthepositionofFMstationsinthe
88to108megacycleFMband.Thelineardivisionofthe0-100
loggingscalemakesiteasytoreturntoa stationusinga logging
scalenumber.
INDICATORS—TheMAC1700hastwoindicatorsonthefront
panel.Oneisthetuningmeter.WhenanFMstationiscorrectly
tunedtheindicatorwillbeintheblackareaofthemeter.The
actionoftheTUNINGindicatorisindependentofstationsignal
strength.ThesecondindicatoristheSTEREOINDICATOR.The
STEREOINDICATORwilllightonlywhenthedialpointercrosses

loudnessontheleftandrightchannelsoftheprogramsource.Theotherisbasic
