A 1513 Discharge Link Preface
1
1 Preface
Congratulations for purchasing and using METREL A 1513 Discharge Link accessory.
The A 1513 Discharge link is optional accessory intended for manual discharging of
capacitive objects. This unit contains a high ohm discharge resistor (10 kV) enclosed in
double insulation plastic package.
A 1513 Discharge Link is special accessory intended for use only with METREL
Insulation testers like: MI 3200, MI 3201, MI 3202, MI 3203, MI 2077, MI 2076, MI 3103,
MA 2060, MI 3210, MI 3205,
Available functions and features offered by the A 1513:
High voltage damped discharge;
Visual indication while discharging;
High IP protection (IP 54).

A 1513 Discharge Link Safety and operational considerations
2
2 Safety and operational considerations
2.1 Warnings and note
In order to reach high level of operator’s safety during application of the A 1513
Discharge Link adapter as well as to keep the test accessory and equipment
undamaged, it is necessary to consider the following general warnings:
The symbol on the A 1513 means »Read the Instruction manual with special
care for safe operation«. The symbol requires an action!
If the test equipment is used in a manner that is not specified in this Instruction
manual, the protection provided by the equipment might be impaired!
Consider all generally known precautions in order to avoid risk of electric shock
while dealing with hazardous voltages!
Adhere to local and national safety codes. Individual protective equipment must
be used to prevent shock and arc blast injury where hazardous live conductors
are exposed.
Use A 1513 only as a secondary “safety” discharge, that follows the implemented
primary discharge as a part of Insulation measurement with Metrel instruments.
Do not use the A 1513 for primary discharge (discharge of tested objects before
measurements)!
Never use the A 1513 with voltages higher than rated.
Service intervention is allowed to be carried out only by a competent authorized
person!
Do not use a A 1513 that is cracked, damaged.
Eyes protection glasses required: open electric arch could emit high-energy
spectrum above visible that could injure your eyes!
Liberated gases: electric arch on insulation material will generate unpredictable
liberated gasses, test area shall be proper vented and/or liberated gases
exhausted.
Do not use the A 1513 in a wet environment, around explosive gas, vapour or
dust.
Only adequately trained and competent persons may operate the equipment.
Handling with capacitive loads
Note that 40 nF charged to 1 kV or 4 nF charged to 10 kV are hazardous live!
Never touch the measured object while testing, until it is totally discharged!
Because of dielectric absorption, capacitive test objects (capacitors, cables,
transformers, etc.) must be shorted out after the measuring process is completed.
Note:
The A 1513 Discharge Link Adapter is all passive type device. There are no
active components inside.

2.2 Markings on the A 1513
Symbol
Description
Read the Instruction manual with special care to safety operation«.
The symbol requires an action!
The symbol on the adapter means “Hazardous voltage may be present
at the test terminals!”.
Product is protected by Double/Reinforced insulation.
Mark on your equipment certifies that it meets European Union
requirements for EMC, LVD, and ROHS regulations.
This equipment should be recycled as electronic waste.
2.3 Standard applied
The A 1513 Discharge Link Adapter is manufactured and tested according to the
following standard, listed below.
Safety (LVD)
EN 61010 - 1
Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement,
control, and laboratory use –Part 1: General requirements
EN 61010 - 2 - 030
Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement,
control and laboratory use –Part 2-030: Particular requirements for
testing and measuring circuits
Note about EN and IEC standards:
Text of this manual contains references to European standards. All standards of EN
6xxxx (e.g. EN 61010) series are equivalent to IEC standards with the same number
(e.g. IEC 61010) and differ only in amended parts required by European harmonization
procedure.

3.3 Example of discharging time
Device under test (DUT) was charged to U0and has an internal capacity of C0.
How fast will the A 1513 discharge the internal capacity of the DUT to the safe voltage
value (UDUT < 50 V)?
Discharging resistance R0of the A 1513 is 100 k.
