GENERAL INFORMATION
TVS-2: The TVS-2 is a high-level rolling code scrambler that uses hopping type rolling code encryption for higher
security rather than the sweeping code type. The scrambler is capable of features such as ANI, ENI, Deadbeat
Disable, Spy, and more when using Midian’s Kryptic Signaling format with the CAD-300/DDU-300/TRC-300. For
more details, please see the TVS-2 Technical Reference Manual.
VPU-15: The VPU-15 is an entry level voice inversion scrambler. The scrambler is capable of features such as
ANI, ENI, Deadbeat Disable, Spy, and more when using Midian’s Kryptic Signaling format with the CAD-
300/DDU-300/TRC-300. For more details, please see the VPU-15 Technical Reference Manual.

RADIO PROGRAMMING
Tait Orca Portables:
In the “Specifications” screen, set the “Maximum Number of Encryption Codes” to the desired number of codes
(1-4 codes). This should correspond to the number of codes programmed into the scrambler. The 5010 can only
be single code.
In the “Key Settings” screen, set the Function 1, 2 or 3 key for mode select and code select. It is recommended to
program the Short Press key to “Encryption On/Off” for mode select and the Long Press key to “Encryption Code
Select” for code select. If only using 1 security code it is not necessary to program a key for code select.
3

Tait TM-8000 Mobiles:
Set the Programmable I/O on the Digital tab as follows:
1. Set Pin IOP_GP101 to Output > PTT > Reflect PTT Status > Active Low.
2. Set Pin IOP_GP102 to Input > PTTOUT > External PTT 1 > Active Low.
3. Set Pin IOP_GP103 to Output > MODE > F1 Key Status > Active Low >Latching. Note: This can also be set
to F2, F3 or F4. F2, F3 and F4 can also be set to momentary to allow for code selection in addition to mode.
4. Set Pin IOP_GP106 to Output > Busy Status > Active Low.
Set the Programmable I/O on the Audio tab as shown in the diagram below.
4

1. Set one key (Key 1 – Key 4) to Encryption. This will be the front panel key used to turn the scrambler on/off. If
the button is programmed for latched (see above) the button can only be used for mode selection. Key 2-4
can be programmed for momentary. In this case the button can be used for mode selection and code
selection. Pressing and releasing the key will change mode. Pressing and holding the key will change code.

PRODUCT PROGRAMMING
Midian’s TVS-2-TAIT and VPU-15-TAIT are programmed via Midian’s KL-3 programming cable or using Tait’s
TOPA-EA-007G. Please reference the KL-3 manual for setup instructions of the KL-3 software and hardware.
From the product selection screen on the KL-3 software, select the appropriate product from the list and click OK.
Set the parameters of the scrambler software to fit the application. If any clarifications on a feature are required,
move the mouse cursor over the feature name until the question mark appears and right click, a definition of the
feature will be shown.
After entering the parameters, save the file by going to File - Save As. Enter the file name in the File Name block
and click Save. Saving the file will allow for quick and easy reprogramming of units.
Tait Orca Portable Programming:
KL-3 Programming: After plugging the board into the radio, but with the radio still open, connect the black lead of
the KL-3 to a common ground and the green clip lead to the Program In hole (P11). Turn power on to the radio
and click “Program Unit” in the KL-3 software.
KL-3 Reading: It will be necessary to connect the yellow clip lead to the Program Out pad (link 5 – right pad), in
addition to having the green clip lead connected to the Program In hole (P11). Follow the same procedure to read
the unit as for programming, but select “Read Unit” in the menu bar. It is necessary to cycle power after
programming or reading. Note: When the scrambler is read, the security codes will be read out as zeroes. If
another scrambler is then cloned with this information, the scramblers will be incompatible because they have
different security codes.
TOPA-EA-007G Programming: This enables the scrambler to be programmed and read through the radio’s
accessory connector. Plug the TOPA-EA-007G cable into the KL-3’s RJ-11 connector. Connect the TOPA-EA-
007G to the accessory connector of the radio. Turn power on to the radio and click “Program Unit” in the KL-3
software. Note: The read function is not available when using the TOPA-EA-007G, as well as programming
tones.
Tait TM-8000 Series Mobile Programming:
219-03026-0X Programming: The scrambler may be programmed through the radio using the TM-8000
Encryption Direct Programming Cable (219-03026-0X) available from Tait. Plug the cable into the DB-9 connector
on the EIM. Turn power on to the radio and click “Program Unit” or “Read Unit” in the KL-3 software.

enter 1, 2, 3, or 4 on the keypad for the desired code followed by pressing the green Menu/Enter button. The
display will show “SC01” for instance when the scramble is on with code 1 selected. If the scrambler is off it
would show “01”.
Non-Display Radios:
Mode Select: Press the Function Key (1 or 2) that was assigned to this function (short or long press). The LED
indicates Encryption On/Off status.
Code Select: Code select is not available in this radio.
Tait TM-8000 Mobiles:
Mode Select: Press and release the key that was assigned to this function in the radio programming (F1, F2, F3
or F4). F1 is only available as a latched condition. F2, F3 and F4 can be momentary or latched.
Code Select: Pressing and holding the mode select key will step the scrambler through the multiple keys if
programmed. A number of beeps will be heard that correspond to the code (i.e. 2 beeps for code 2). Code select
is only available when using F2, F3, or F4 as momentary.
TECHNICAL NOTES
Radio Compatibility: Midian has taken the utmost care to ensure the option board integrates into the radio with
minimal impact to the features of the radio. However, some features may not be available in the radio when an
option board is used. If a feature is not available, please contact Midian to see if the feature can be added.
Known Issues:
Tones: Tones such as the Go-Ahead Beep, programming tones, etc. are not heard on this radio.
Multi-Code: If using multiple codes in the TVS-2-TAIT or VPU-15-TAIT and other Midian TVS-2 or VPU-15 Series
scramblers are being used in other types of radios, it should be noted that in the TVS-2-TAIT and VPU-15-TAIT
the binary is reversed. This means that code 4 in the TVS-2-TAIT or VPU-15-TAIT would equate to code 1 in a
regular TVS-2 or VPU-15 scrambler.
