WORK AREA

plugging intools with theswitchoninvitesaccidents.
13. Removeadjustingkeysorwrenchesbeforeturningthetoolon.
A wrenchora keythatis left attachedtoa rotating partofthe tool
may resultinpersonalinjury.
14. Donotoverreach.Keepproperfootingandbalanceatalltimes.
Proper footing andbalanceenablesbettercontrolofthe tool inunex-
pectedsituations.
15. Usesafety equipment.Alwaysweareyeprotection.Dustmask,

TOOL USE AND CARE
16. Useclampsorotherpracticalwayto secure andsupportthe
workpiecetoa stableplatform.Holdingtheworkbyhandoragainst
yourbodyisunstableandmayleadtolossofcontrol.
17. Donotforcetool. Usethecorrecttoolforyourapplication.The
correct tool willdothejobbetterandsaferattherateforwhichitis
designed.
18. Donotusetoolifswitchdoesnotturnitonoroff.Any tool that
cannot becontrolled with theswitchisdangerousandmustbere-
paired.
19. Disconnecttheplugfromthepowersourcebeforemakingany
adjustments, changing accessories, orstoringthetool. Such
preventivesafetymeasuresreducetheriskofstartingthe tool
accidentally.
20. Storeidletoolsoutofreachofchildrenandotheruntrained
persons. Toolsaredangerousinthehandsofuntrained users.
21. Maintaintoolswithcare.Keepcuttingtoolssharpandclean.
Properly maintainedtools with sharp cutting edgeare less likelyto
bind andareeasiertocontrol.Donotusea damagedtool.Tag
damagedtools"Donotuse" until repaired.
22. Checkformisalignmentorbindingofmovingparts,breakageof
parts, andanyotherconditionthatmayaffectthetool'sopera-
tion.Ifdamaged,havethetool serviced before using. Many acci-
dentsarecausedbypoorlymaintainedtools.
23. Useonly accessories thatarerecommendedbythemanufac-
turerforyour model. Accessories thatmaybesuitableforonetool,
may becomehazardouswhenusedonanothertool.
SERVICE
24. Toolservicemustbeperformedonlybyqualifiedrepair
personnel. Service ormaintenanceperformedbyunqualifiedper-

owncord.Contact with a "live"wire will makeexposedmetalpartsof tool "live"andshocktheoperator.

3. WARNING!Somedustcreatedbypowersanding,sawing,grinding,drilling,andotherconstructionactivitiescontainschemicalsknowntocause
cancer, birth defectsorotherreproductiveharm.Someexamplesofthesechemicalsare:
•lead from lead-basedpaint
•crystallinesilica from bricksandcementandothermasonryproducts,and
•arsenicandchromium from chemically-treatedlumber.
Your risk from theseexposures varies, dependingonhow often youdothistypeofwork.Toreduceyourexposuretothesechemicals:workina well
ventilated area, andwork with approvedsafetyequipment,suchasthose dust masks that arespeciallydesigned to filter outmicroscopicparticles.

groundingplug.Theplugmustbecon-
nectedtoa properlygrounded outlet
(See Figure A). Ifthe tool should elec-
tricallymalfunctionorbreakdown,
groundingprovidesa lowresistance
pathtocarryelectricity away from the
user, reducingtheriskofelectricshock.

The groundingprongintheplugisconnected through thegreenwireinside
thecordtothegroundingsysteminthetool.Thegreenwireinthecordmust
betheonlywireconnectedtothetool'sgrounding system andmustneverbe
attachedtoanelectrically "live" terminal.
Your tool mustbeplugged into an appropriate outlet, properlyinstalledand
groundedin accordance with allcodesand ordinances. Theplugand outlet
shouldlooklikethose in Figure A.

Groundedtoolsrequireathreewireextensioncord.Doubleinsulatedtools
can useeithera twoorthreewireextensioncord.Asthedistance from the
supply outlet increases, youmust use aheaviergaugeextension cord. Using
extensioncords with inadequately sized wire causes a serious drop involt-
age, resultinginlossofpowerandpossible tool damage. Refer tothetable
showntodeterminetherequiredminimumwire size.
The smallerthegaugenumberofthewire,thegreaterthecapacityofthe
cord. Forexample,a 14gaugecordcancarrya highercurrentthana 16
gaugecord.When usingmorethanoneextensioncordtomakeupthe total
length,besure each cordcontainsatleasttheminimumwire size required.
Ifyouareusingoneextensioncord formorethanonetool,add thename-
plateamperesandusethesumtodeterminetherequiredminimumwire
size.
Guidelines forUsing Extension Cords
•Ifyouareusinganextensioncordoutdoors,be sure itismarked with the
suffix"W-A"("W"in Canada) toindicatethatitisacceptablefor outdoor
use.
• Be sureyourextensioncordisproperlywiredandin good electrical
condition. Always replaceadamagedextensioncordor have itrepaired
bya qualifiedpersonbeforeusingit.
•Protectyourextensioncords from sharpobjects, excessive heatand
damporwet areas.

Random OrbitSanders
Random orbit sanderscombinea small orbiting action with free floating
rotation.Theresulting motion isa randompatternthatproducesan even,
swirl-freefinish ona varietyofmaterials.
Selecting SandpaperandGrits
Sandpaper canbemade from various grit materialsandtheseshouldbe
selected according thematerialtobesanded.Theguidelinesbelowlist
materials and grit materialsthatshouldbeused with them.
•Finewoodwork- garnetoraluminumoxide
•Roughwoodwork- aluminumzirconiaorceramicaluminumoxide
Manufacturedwoodproducts(particleboard,mediumdensity
fiberboardetc.)- siliconcarbideoraluminumoxide

Sandpaper isalsogradedby coarseness. Startyourwork with anabra-
sive grit justcoarseenoughtoremovehighspotsand excessive rough-
ness. Follow with a secondsandingusinga grit oneortwogradesfiner.
Continue with successively finergrits until youobtainthedesiredfinish.
Donotswitch from a coarse grit toa veryfine grit inonestepbecauseit
may be difficult toremovethemarksmadebythecoarse grit abrasive.
Use thefinestgritspracticalfortheroughingoperation,andfinishby
using successively finergrits.

1. Unplug tool andplaceitona flatsurface with padup.
2. ForCat.No.6018,cleandustanddebris from padface with a dry
cloth.Donotusesolventsorimmersepadinliquidsasthismay
damagethepad.
3. Alignholesinsandpaper with thedustextractionholesinthe sand-
ingpadandfirmlypressthesandpaper onto thepad.
NOTE: Sandingdisc sizes vary.Choosea sandingdiscbetween
4-3/4" to5"indiameter.
To securethesandingdisc,runthesanderon scrap, pressing
downfirmlyonthesandpaper.
4. Toremovethesandpaperdisc,peelitaway from thepad.
NOTE: Whenusing PSA sanding discs, donotstore tool with sand-
paperdisconpad.Duetoheatgeneratedwhilesanding,discs left
onthepadforextendedperiodsmaybe difficult toremove.
AttachingDustBag(Fig.1)
To attachdustbag,slidebag'sentry port oversender'sdustexitspout
until detentengages with holeinentry port.
To removedustbag,gentlytwistentry port and pull itaway from dustexit
spout.
For bestresults,emptydustbag whenitisnomorethanhalffull.To
emptydustbag,removebag from sander.Unzipbagandgentlytapto
removedust.

MaintainingTools
Keep your tool ingoodrepairbyadoptinga regularmaintenancepro-
gram. Beforeuse,examinethegeneralconditionofyour tool.Inspect
guards, switches, tool cordsetandextensioncord fordamage. Check
forloose screws, misalignment,bindingofmovingparts,impropermount-
ing, brokenpartsandanyotherconditionthatmayaffect its safe opera-
tion.Ifabnormal noiseorvibrationoccurs, turn the tool offimmediately
and havetheproblemcorrectedbeforefurtheruse.Donotusea dam-
aged tool.Tagdamagedtools"DONOTUSE" until repaired
(see "Repairs").
Under normalconditions,relubricationisnot necessary until the motor
brushes needtobe replaced. Aftersixmonthstooneyear,dependingon
use, returnyour tool tothenearest MILWAUKEE service facilityforthe
following:
•Lubrication
•Brushinspectionandreplacement
•Mechanicalinspectionandcleaning (gears, spindles,bearings,
housing, etc.)
•Electricalinspection(switch,cord,armature,etc.)

free ofoilor grease. Useonlymildsoapanda dampclothtocleanyour
tool sincecertaincleaningagentsandsolventsareharmfultoplastics
and otherinsulatedparts.Someoftheseinclude:gasoline,turpentine,
lacquer thinner,paintthinner,chlorinatedcleaningsolvents,ammonia

tool (includingbatterychargers)whichexaminationprovestobedefec-
tiveinmaterialorworkmanshipfromfive(5) years afterthedateof
purchase. Returnthe tool anda copyofthepurchasereceiptorother

paid andinsured. This warrantydoesnotcoverdamagefromrepairs
