15. Depth-of-Field
At any aperture a lens
will give
sharp focus for a
certain
distance
both behind and in f
ront of the
subject.
This distance
isknown as
the'depthof-
field'.The smaller
the aperture
the greater
the
depth-of-field, Also, lenses
with a short focal
length,
such aswide angle lenses,
have
a greater
depth-of
-f
ield than ones with a longer focal length,
such
as
telephoto lenses.
Depth-of-f ield scale
A depth-of
-f
ield scale
is
engravedon the respec-
tive lenses.
When the camera
is
,
f
or example,
f
ocused
on a subjectat the distance,
e.g.,3m
with the aperture set
at f/8, the subjects
located
within B at both sides
of the "1" mark (approx.
2m in the front rangeand approx. 5m in the
rear range)
are sharp
and clear.
