Mitsubishi’s DigitalTelevision ProductLinefor 2005-
2006consistsofseveral differentdisplaytechnologies.
They are categorized as either Rear Projection or Di-
rectView.

ThistrainingmanualisdirectedtowardsProjectionTele-
visiontechnologies.
Each technology offers its own strengths and weak-
nesses.Otherwise,onlyonetypewouldneedtobemade
available. Understandingthedifferencesin eachtech-
nologywillaid thetechnician whendiscussing agiven
set’s performancewith a consumer. Tables 1-1 and1-
2outlinesomeofthestrengthsand weaknessesofeach
one.Ofcourse,thestrengthsandweaknesseswillchange
aseachtechnology evolvesovertime.
CRTTechnology-V27 Chassis
Thisis themostmature technologyof the four. Itmay
even be viewed as somewhat “low tech” by some
people. However,Mitsubishi’sproductlineincludesall
thelatest digital features. Assuch,it can stilloffer the
best “bang for the buck” of all the technologies. The
V27Chassis is used in 55”,65” and 73” models.
LCDTechnology-V28 Chassis
WhileLCD projection television iscertainly not new,
recentstrideshaveimprovedthistechnologysothatMit-
subishicanofferitin4modelsthis year.
DLPTechnology-V29/V30/V31 Chassis
Mitsubishi,thefirsttobringDLPtechnologyto market
inarearprojectiontelevision, marksanother “first”by
introducing 1080p DLP in 9 different rear projection
models. ThisistwicetheresolutionofHighDefinition.
Itwillcome in52,62 and73 inchscreensizes, withthe
73inchmodelsbeingthelargestDLPmodelseveravail-
able.

3 chip system carried over in the 82” rear projection

The CRTtechnologyusedintheV27chassisiselectri-
callythesameastheV25chassis. SincetheV25Train-
ingManualcoversitin-depth,nofurtherdiscussionwill
benecessary.
LCD,DLP and LCoS are known as “Micro-Display”
technologies. TheLightEnginesareconfigured differ-
entlyforeach.
LCDusesthe“lighttransmissive”methodofproducing
a picture as light passes through the panel. DLP and
LCoSuse the“light reflective”method ofproducinga

pictureaslightreflectsoffthesurfaceofthedisplayde-
vice.
AnLCDmust use3 devicestoproduceacolor picture.
DLPand LCoScan beconfigured aseither single,or 3
deviceengines. Mitsubishicurrentlyusesasinglechip
DLPand a 3 chip LCoS system.
The LCD Light Engine, shown in Figure 1-1, uses 3
LCD “Panels” to individually produce the red, green
andblueelementsofthepicture. Dichroicmirrorssepa-
ratethered,greenandblueelements oflight,and anX-
Prismisused to re-combine the 3 colors after the pic-
tureshave been produced.

The 2005-2006 PTV product line uses several new
performanceimprovement technologies forLCD and
DLPdisplays.

• 10,800RPMColorWheel
QuickMotion™is anadvanced highspeeddrivesys-
temthat derives faster response from LCDs,virtually
eliminatingtheblurs thatoftenoccur whenthemoving
picturehasfastmotion.
SmartShutter™isadynamicaperturesystemthatim-
proves black levels and adds a large palette of dark
greyshades. Itdoesthisbyreducinglightoutputduring
darkscenes withoutnegativelyaffecting other picture
characteristics.
Shown in Figure1-4,the SmartShutter High Contrast
Unit(HCU)islocatedinthelightpathbetweenthelamp
outputand theoptics.
TheHCU is a motor driven devicethatdims the lamp
outputbyphysically blockingitwithmovablelouvers.
See Figure 1-5. As dark scenes are detected, the lou-
vers move from positionA, full light output, through
positionsB, C andD to accuratelycontrol theamount
oflight necessaryas thepicturebrightness varies. Itis
controlledby thePWB-Motor Driver.

mirrors.Thisyieldsasmoothappearancewith-
out“pixelgaps.”

A720pDMD usesa squarepixelarrangement
whilea 1080p DMD uses a diagonal pixel ar-
rangement. Pixelgapsareeliminatedbydivid-
ingthe1080ppictureinto2sub-framesandin-
terleavingtheimagebyshiftingthesecondsub-
frame down by 1/2pixel. See Figure1-8.
Theimageshiftisaccomplishedwiththeuseof
asinglecoildrivenmirrorlocatedintheoptical
outputstage of theDLP light engine.SeeFig-
ure 1-9.

The data is divided into two subframes, each with half the original data. During one of the
subframes, the image is shifted down by 1/2 pixel. The eye integrates the two consecutive
subframes to create the final image. This process is completd every 1/60 of a second, dis-
playing all of the data, every frame, just as is the case for other traditional DMDs.
The resulting image exhibits the same pixel resolution as the original input data in both hori-
zontal and vertical directions, using half the number of mirrors. The gaps are also minimized
in the process, resulting in an image that is not only full resolution, but smooth in appearance -
without the typical pixel gaps.

Dark Detailer™ is another type of dynamic aperture
systemusedwithDLPbasedmodels.Itdisplaysdeeper
blacksand better dark scene detail.
ThelocationoftheDark Detailer,alsoreferredto asthe
DynamicBlack (DB) module,is shown withitscover
removed in Figure 1-9. It is located in the light path
betweenthe lampand DLP optics.
Figure1-10 showsthe DB moduleafter it hasbeen re-
movedfromtheengine. Thelightshuttercanbeseenat
thetopofthepicture. Itmovesintoandoutof thelight
pathto reducethe lampoutput duringdarkscenes. An
apertureopening inthe shutter canalso be seen.
Figure1-11depictshowtheone-sided aperturesystem
providesthe best reliability along with bettercontrast
anduniformityovertheentire TVpicture.

Because some people can experience a “rainbow ef-
fect”due todifferences intheir persistenceof vision,a
10,800RPMColor Wheel is now used in the 2005-
2006 DLP product line. This represents a 50% speed
increaseover last years 7,200RPMwheel.
Service Technologies
The2005-2006 PTVproduct line carriesseveral tech-
nologiesthataffect service. Theyare:
• PWBsare constructed with Lead Free Solder.
• Mirror area is easier to access on 52” LCD &
all DLPtosimplifycleaning.
• EliminationofribboncablesintheElectrical
Chassisimprovesreliability.
• The Interface PWB betweenthe Chassis and
LightEngineisconvenientfortroubleshooting.
• AccesstotheElectricalChassisisimprovedfor
troubleshootingandPWBreplacement.
• LEDdiagnostics havebeen expandedto
simplifytroubleshooting.
