This User’s Reference Guide provides a brief explanation of the product, including hardware and
software features. It focuses on the Pocket PC operating s stem and applications that are shipped
as part of that OS. It is designed to provide a basic understanding of our new Wa Point PDA,
enabling ou to get started quickl . For information on the Wa Point applications please reference
the Wa Point Users Guide.
To ensure that ou can use the product safel and correctl , please read this manual carefull
before ou start using our Wa Point PDA. For future reference, keep this User’s Guide hand at
all times.

1. Introduction
1.1 WELCOME
Congratulations on purchasing our new Wa point PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). You now have
the convenience and flexibilit of a portable navigation tool and full-featured personal digital
assistant, enabling ou to automaticall route to places of interest, addresses or locations in our
contact list. In addition ou can use PIM (Personal Information Manager) functions to keep track of
information wherever ou go. Powered b Microsoft® Pocket PC 2003 Premium Edition, our
Wa Point PDA offers a host of functions designed to make our life easier.
This manual covers onl the Pocket PC 2003 portion of the Wa Point PDA. For information on the
hardware features and specific navigation features of ou Wa Point PDA please consult the
Wa Point Users Guide.
1. FEATURE LIST
The Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 Premium Edition includes several applications be ond just the OS

A glance at the Toda screen provides ou with a summar of all the important information for the
da . This includes, the time and date, a summar of the owner information, upcoming
appointments, unread messages and tasks waiting to be done.
Tap the date to change the date and time settings, or tap an of the other items to open them.
In the navigation bar at the top of the screen, ou can tap the start button to change the
device settings and launch an of the applications stored on our Wa Point PDA. You can also
view an notification messages or change the speaker volume.
In the command bar at the bottom of the screen, ou can create a new appointment, contact, email
message, Excel workbook, note, task, or Word document. The icon on the right hand side of the
command bar shows the status of the connection between our Wa Point PDA and host PC during
s nchronization.

2. Exploring Your Wa Point PDA
.1 BASIC OPERATION
Your Wa Point PDA is designed for eas operation, enabling ou to convenientl enter and access
data wherever ou are.
.1.1 The Operating System
Your Wa Point PDA uses the Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 Premium Edition operating s stem. This
makes navigating on our Wa Point PDA similar to using Microsoft Windows on our desktop or
notebook PC. You will find man familiar features, such as the start menu, pop-up menus and
toolbars.
.1.1.1 The Navigation Bar
Note that the word navigation in this book is used often to refer to the bar shown below and should
not be confused with navigation in the sense of mapping software. Mapping software is covered in
the Wa Point Users Guide. The term navigation as used here is maintained in this manual to
provide compatibilit with external documentation that the user ma encounter.
The navigation bar is found at the top of the screen. It displa s the start button , the name of
the active program, the speaker volume icon and the time.
• Tap the speaker volume icon to change the volume level or to mute the Wa Point
PDA (see 2.2.1 “Using the St lus”).
•The can be used to leave the application.
• Tap the start menu to displa the list of programs, and then select a program from
the list (see 2.2.1 “Using the St lus”).
The navigation bar also displa s notification icons. The following table shows some of the icons ou
ma see.
If more notification icons need to be displa ed than there is room to displa them, the Notification
icon, , will displa . Tap the icon to view all notification icons.

.1.1. The Command Bar
The command bar is found at the bottom of the screen. It displa s menu names and available
buttons, as well as the input panel button. These controls allow ou to perform tasks in programs.
• Tap a menu name to see its pop-up list, and then select an action on the list (see 2.2.1 “Using
the St lus”).
• Tap a button to perform an action. Tap and hold the st lus on a button to see the name of a
button, and then drag the st lus off the button to prevent the action from being performed (see
2.2.1 “Using the St lus”).
.1.1.3 Launching and Switching Between Programs
Use the start menu or the home menu application to launch programs.
Use the task switcher or the start menu to move between programs that are alread running.

To open or switch between running programs using the start menu, tap on the start button
in the navigation bar, and then select the program ou want from the list (see 2.2.1
“Using the St lus”).
. OPERATION
Operating our Wa Point PDA is easil done b tapping on-screen buttons with the st lus. You will
also find the Cursor Button a useful feature for moving between pages and scrolling through menus
and lists. Finall , “New” menu button, together with the other Programmable Application Buttons,
makes our favorite applications just a button push awa .
. .1 Using the Stylus
Use the st lus to operate on and select items on-screen.
•Tap the screen once to select an item.
•Drag the st lus to select text and images. In a list, drag to select multiple items.
• Tap and hold an item to displa a pop-up menu listing available actions. Tap our
selection to perform the action.
. . Using the Cursor Button
Use the four-wa Cursor Button to move up and down, and side to side, when moving between on-
screen buttons and controls. You can also use this feature to scroll through lists of files and
documents.
. .3 Using the Thumb Wheel
Use the Thumb Wheel to move up and down when navigating on-screen buttons and controls.
Press to make our selection. The Thumb Wheel can also be used to traverse an menu and select
items from it once the menu has been opened.
. .4 Using the Programmable Application Buttons
The Programmable Application Buttons provide a fast and convenient wa to open our favorite
programs. Press one of the Programmable Application Buttons to instantl open the application
assigned to that ke . The default applications are shown as icons on the front of the unit.

.3 ENTERING DATA
There are several wa s to enter data in our Wa Point PDA:
• Use the input panel to enter t ped text. You have the option of using the onscreen (soft)
ke board, or selecting an alternative method from the input list.
• Use the st lus to write directl on the screen. Your handwriting will be recognized and
converted to text.
• Use the st lus to draw a picture on the screen. The drawing box is opened when ou
cross three ruled lines.
•Record a message using the voice recorder.
• Connect to a PC using a cable, the USB cradle link or infrared (see 4.1 “Connecting to a
PC”).
• Connect to a network or the Internet using a Compact Flash card (see 4.3 “Connecting to
the Internet or Your Network”).
.3.1 Using the Input Panel to Enter Typed Text
The input panel can be used to input text in an program. Tap the input panel button on the
command bar to displa the input panel. Tap the arrow next to the button to see the list of input
options.
The Input Panel
The following input options are listed:
• Block Recognizer
Block Recognizer allows ou to input characters using prescribed strokes. After ou write
a character it is converted to text that is displa ed on the screen.

Tap the input panel arrow and select Block Recognizer. For help with using Block
Recognizer, tap the help button .
• Keyboard
The onscreen ke board allows ou to enter text b tapping the displa ed “ke s” with the
st lus.
To displa the onscreen ke board, tap the input panel arrow and select Ke board.
• Letter Recognizer
Letter Recognizer allows ou to use the st lus to write onscreen, just as ou would write
with a pen on paper. After ou write each letter it is converted to a text character.
Tap the input panel arrow and select Letter Recognizer. For help with using Letter
Recognizer, tap the help button .
• Transcriber
Transcriber also allows ou to write onscreen with the st lus. However, this method
allows ou to write blocks of information before pausing for the characters to be
recognized.
Tap the input panel arrow and select Transcriber. For help with using Transcriber, tap the
help button .
.3. Writing on the Screen
You can write on the screen with the st lus in an program that accepts handwriting, such as
Calendar, Tasks and Contacts. Your handwriting will be entered as it is, although ou have the
option of editing and formatting it. Later, if required, ou can convert our handwriting to text.
� Writing
To write on the screen in a program that accepts handwriting, first tap the pen button
on the command bar. If the program accepts writing, but does not have a pen
button, check the help for instructions on how to enter write mode in that program. After
ou enter write mode, ruled lines will appear on the screen to help ou write.

Writing on the screen
� Editing and Formatting Your Writing
To edit or format our writing, tap the screen at the place where ou want to begin. This
will move the insertion point. Select a word or multiple words b dragging the st lus. If
ou accidentall start to write, tap “Edit”, then tr dragging the st lus again. Deselect
words b tapping on the screen to bring the insertion point back. Use the “Cut”, “Copy”
and “Paste” commands in the “Edit” menu to edit our selection, or tap and hold our
selection and then chose an edit command from the pop-up list that appears. Use the
“Tools” menu to format our selection.
� Converting Writing to Text
To convert handwriting to text, ou can make a selection b dragging the st lus.
Unselected words will be left as handwriting after ou convert the selected words.
However, if ou chose not to select an part of our writing, all the words will be
converted.
Next, tap “Tools” > ”Recognize.” Alternativel , ou can tap and hold the selected
words, and then chose “Recognize” from the pop-up menu that appears. The selected
words are converted to text.
If a word is incorrectl converted ou can return to the original writing or chose from a
list of alternates. Tap the incorrect word and then select an alternate or the original
handwritten word from the pop-up list that appears.
For improved word recognition:
- write neatl using the onscreen lines as guides
- write the letters of a word close together
- leave large spaces between words

- use the “Tools” menu to increase the zoom level to 300%
- be aware that h phenated words and words using some special characters or
punctuation cannot be converted
- if ou change a word after attempting to recognize it, the new word will not be
recognized. It is better to write the whole word again.
.3.3 Drawing on the Screen
Drawing on the screen is ver similar to writing onscreen. However, selecting and editing items is
different in a drawing. For example, a drawing can be resized, but handwriting cannot.
•Drawing
To create a drawing, tap the pen button in the command bar to enter write mode.
Ruled lines appear on the screen. Cross three ruled lines with our first stroke and a
drawing box appears. If ou fail to open a drawing box in this wa , our input will be
treated as writing. Once the drawing box is open, an thing ou draw or write in the box
will be treated as part of the drawing. You ma find it easier to work if ou increase the
zoom level in the “Tools” menu.

� Editing and Formatting Your Drawing
To edit or format our drawing, first tap and hold the drawing with the st lus until the
selection handle appears. Use the “Cut”, “Copy” and “Paste” commands in the “Edit”
menu to edit our selection, or tap and hold our selection and then chose an edit
command from the pop-up list that appears. Use the “Tools” menu to format our
selection.
To resize a drawing, first deselect the pen button . Then, tap the drawing to bring up
the selection handle. Finall , tap and drag a corner of the drawing box.

.3.4 Recording a Voice Message
Recording a voice message is a quick and convenient wa of saving information and reminders.
You can make a voice recording in an program that allows ou to write or draw on the screen,
such as Calendar, Tasks and Contacts. These programs allow ou to embed a voice recording in a
written note. Alternativel , ou can make a stand-alone recording in the Notes tab.
Your Wa Point PDA supports several recording formats. These formats differ in qualit and file
size, as well as their compatibilit with other programs and devices. To change the format, tap
“Settings” on the start menu. Next, tap the “Input” icon and select the “Options” tab.
�Making a Recording
To make a recording, press and hold the voice recorder button. (Alternativel , ou can tap the
record button in the recording toolbar). An audible beep informs ou that the device is recording.
Speak into the microphone. When the message is complete, release the voice recorder button to
stop recording. Two beeps indicate that recording has stopped, and the message appears in the
note list or as an audible message icon embedded in the text.
The default sampling frequenc has been set at 22KHz. This bandwidth can be altered to improve
qualit , but doing this will use more memor . To change the setting, tap “Start Menu” > ”Settings”
> ”Input,” and then select the Options tab. Select a higher or lower frequenc from the voice
recording drop-down menu.
� Playing a Recording
To pla a recording, tap on the message in the note list or the audible message icon
in the text.
.4 FINDING AND ORGANIZING INFORMATION
File management using Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 on our Wa Point PDA is similar to using the
Windows operating s stem on our PC.
.4.1 Using Find
Files can be located quickl b tapping the “Find” command on the start menu. Enter the text ou
are looking for, select a data t pe, and then tap “Go.”

.4. Using File Explorer
Tap “Programs” on the start menu, and then tap “File Explorer” to displa the folders and files
stored on our Wa Point PDA.

Use File Explorer to view, create, move and delete files and folders. Tapping a folder opens that
folder and displa s the contents. The top line can be tapped to reveal a selection to move about the
file s stem above our current location.
Tap and hold in an open area of the File Explorer box, or individual folder and file icons, to see a
pop-up list of available actions. File Explorer works with one file or tap and drag can select multiple
files.
File explorer can be used to make a shortcut as well. Tap and hold the file ou want to have a
shortcut for and then select cop . Move to the director where the shortcut is desired and tap and
hold on a blank area of the page. A menu will appear letting ou decide to cop the file itself or
make a shortcut for the file.
The icons on the menu at the bottom indicate whether ou are look at main memor or a storage
card. The third icon makes a network connection. The can be used to switch between storage
mediums. The storage card shown is the last one referenced.
The arrow to the left of the main memor icon stores previousl visited locations for rapid access.
New folders can be created in File Explorer. Tap and hold inside the folder where the new folder is
to be made and select New Folder from the menu or use the Edit menu.
File explorer can be used to launch programs b tapping on them or a file that is attached to a
program. For example tapping on an image will open a program to view the image if there is one
assigned.
Program t pes can be identified b the icon next to the name.

3 The PDA Applications
3.1 ORGANIZING YOUR SCHEDULE
Your Wa Point PDA includes PIM (Calendar/Note/Task/Content), making it the perfect tool for
organizing our schedule, keeping track of appointments and listing the tasks ou have to
complete.
You can use Microsoft ActiveS nc to s nchronize the information in PIM and files on our Wa Point
PDA with Microsoft Outlook 2000 / 2002 or Microsoft Exchange on our PC. A cop of Microsoft
Outlook 2002 is included on the installation cdrom.
3.1.1 Today Screen
The Toda screen is displa ed when ou turn on our Wa Point PDA for the first time each da , or
after 4 hours of inactivit . You can also displa the Toda screen at an time b tapping “Today” on
the start menu.
A glance at the Toda screen provides ou with a summar of all the important information for the
da . Tap the time/date icon to change its settings. Tap an of the other items to open them.

3.1. Calendar
Calendar enables ou to schedule meetings and other events. Tap “Calendar” on the start menu to
open it. A choice of views (Agenda, Da , Week, Month, Year) is available b tapping the view icons
on the command bar.
