Introduction
Thank You for choosing a Montigo C-Series Firep ace.
About the C34 Fireplace:
The C34-DVinc udes a 20,000 BTU dua burner with embers and a
five piece ceramic fibre ogset. This mode is avai ab e in four versions.

Warranty and Installation Information:
The Montigo warranty wi be voided by, and Montigo disc aims any
responsibi ity for, the fo owing actions:
Modification of the firep ace and/or components inc uding Direct-Vent
assemb y or g ass doors.
Use of any component part not manufactured or approved by
Montigo in combination with this Montigo firep ace system.
Insta ation other than as instructed in this manua .
Consu t your oca Gas Inspection Branch on insta ation requirements for
factory-bui t gas firep aces. Insta ation & repairs shou d be done by a
qua ified contractor.
InstallationsinCanada must conform to the current CAN/CGAB-
149.1 and .2 Gas Insta ation Code and oca regu ations. If the optiona
air-circu ating fan kit is insta ed, it must be e ectrica y grounded in
accordance with CSAC22.1 Canadian E ectrica Code Part 1 and/or
Loca Codes.
InstallationsintheUSA must conform to oca codes, or in the
absence of oca codes to the Nationa Fue Gas Code, ANSIZ223.1-
1988. If the optiona air-circu ating fan is insta ed, it must be grounded in
accordance with oca codes or, in the absence of oca codes, with the

Installing The Fireplace Shell
The firep ace may be insta ed in any ocation that maintains proper
c earance to air conditioning ducts, e ectrica wiring and p umbing.
Safety, as we as efficiency of operation, must be considered when
se ecting the firep ace ocation. Try to se ect a ocation that does not
interfere with room traffic, has adequate venti ation, and offers an
accessib e pathway for Direct Vent insta ation. Refer to page 4 - Vent
Installationfor more information.
The firep ace dimensions are shown be ow:
Installation
When insta ing a she f over the top of the firep ace, the fo owing
guide ines must be adhered to: For Rear Vent mode s (C34-DR), the
minimum c earance from the top of the firep ace to a she f is 7". For Top
Vent mode s (C34-DT), the minimum c earance is 15". (Minimum1"
clearancemuststillbemaintainedaroundtheventpipes.)

Unprotected combustib e wa s which are perpendicu ar to the firep ace
opening, must not project beyond the shaded area shown in Figure 19b.
For protection against freezing temperatures, it is recommended that
outer wa s of the chase be insu ated with a vapour barrier. This wi
reduce the possibi ity of a co d-air convection current on the firep ace.

This section covers the insta ation of direct venting and terminations.
Installation Requirements
C34-DV firep aces are certified for use with Montigo Premium Series
(5"/ 8") venting components. The C34-DV TopVent may be used
with Standard Series (4"/7")components on vertica vent runs on y.
Minimum 1" c earance to combustib es required for vent pipes
Use ony certified Montigo vent components. (Use of other parts wi void the
Montigo warranty, and may impede the operation of the firep ace.)
A joints must be secured with a minimum of two screws per joint
Vent terminations must not be recessed in wa s or siding
Horizonta runs must be supported by a minimum of two supports
per horizonta run. A minimum of one screw on each side of
support is a so required
F ex vent sections may be stretched up to 50% of their tota ength
(eg. a 24" section may be stretched to 36")
Maximum horizonta run for a f ex section with no vertica rise is 3 feet.
F ex vent sections over 3 feet must fa within the imits set by the
venting graph and must have a minimum vertica rise of 3 inches
per foot of f ex.

Vent Terminations
Selecting A Termination Location
Choosing your vent termination ocation wi he p to determine whether
you need to use a top vent or rear vent firep ace. Figure 6, be ow,
shows typica firep ace ocations and the venting options they provide.

Installing The Gas Line
The gas ine must be insta ed before finishing the C34-DV Firep ace.
NaturalGas requires a minimum in et gas supp y pressure of 5.5"
W.C. & a manifo d pressure of 3.5" W.C. PropaneGas requires a
minimum in et gas supp y pressure of 11" W.C. & a manifo d pressure of
10" W.C. Provision must a so be made for a 1/8" N.P.T. p ugged tapping
and be accessib e for test gauge connection immediate y upstream of the
gas supp y contro s to the app iance. The firep ace gas connection and
the main operating gas va ve is ocated behind the removab e brass trim
at the bottom of the unit and need on y be attached to the gas ine with an
approved fitting, as required by the applicable installation codes.

Note: After gas ine is connected, each appliance connection,
valve and valve train must be checked whi e under
norma operating pressure with either a iquid so ution, or
eak detection device, to ocate any source of eak. Tighten
any areas where bubb ing appears or eak is detected unti
bubb ing stops comp ete y or eak is no onger detected.
DO NOT use a flame of any kind to test for leaks.
Installing The Remote Switch
The C34-DV's gas va ve, ocated behind the ower brass trim, may be
connected to a wa switch. The va ve generates its own power on a
millivoltcircuit. Use only low voltage wire, and DO NOT connect
any externa power to it.
Refer to Figure 27 for wiring requirements.
Note: The switch ocation must not exceed 30' from the firep ace.

The app iance and its individua shutoff va ve must be disconnected from
the gas supp y piping system during any pressure testing of that system
at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig (3.5 kPa).
The app iance must be iso ated from the gas supp y piping system by
c osing its individua manua shutoff va ve during any pressure testing of
the gas supp y piping system at test pressures equa to or ess than 1/2
psig (3.5 kPa).
Vent terminations can be very hot. If the termination
is ess than 7 feet above a pub ic wa kway, it shou d
be fitted with a certified Montigo Heat Guard. (Part no.
PTKOG)
Do not obstruct, or attempt to concea , the vent
termination. These actions wi affect the operation
of the firep ace, and may be hazardous.
In heavy snow areas, take extra care to prevent snow
bui dup from obstructing the vent termination.

1. Ensure that the two longmounting brackets are facing the bottom of
the termination. (See inset). This wi provide more heat protection
at the top of the termination, where temperatures are highest.

Top ent enting Runs
For the C34-DV TopVent, there are two types of insta ations: A)
Through-The-Wa Insta ations and B) Vertica (Through-The-Roof)
Insta ations.
A) Through-The-Wall Installations
Before you insta any venting, you must determine whether the venting
run wi be acceptab e. Unacceptab e venting can affect the firep ace's
combustion.
The Venting Graph
Measure the vertica height from the firep ace hearth to the centre of the
termination and the horizonta run from the from the firep ace f ue co ar to
the wa f ange of the termination. P ot on the Venting Graph (Fig. 7) with
an 'X'.
If the 'X' fa s on or above the top boundary of the shaded area, the
insta ation is acceptab e.
Example A: (Acceptable Installation)
If the vertica dimension from the hearth is 84" and the horizonta
run to the wa f ange of the vent termination is 36", this wou d be
an acceptab e insta ation.
Example B: (Acceptable Installation)
If the vertica dimension from the hearth is 90" and the horizonta
run to the wa f ange of the vent termination is 120", this wou d be
an acceptab e insta ation.
Example C: (Unacceptable Installation)
If the vertica dimension from the f oor of the firep ace is 72" and
the horizonta run to the wa f ange of the vent termination is 84",
this would NOT be an acceptable installation.

Rigid sections and an e bow used in conjunction with 3 ft. f ex section
(PFL-3) wi , when extended in a five foot chase, a ow for a maximum
horizonta run of twe ve and one-ha f feet from the centre of the firep ace
to outside wa and a minimum of 7'6" when retracted in opposite direction
(see Figure 10 and 11).
"C" f ex sections and "D" rigid sections may be used in conjunction with
one another to obtain different possib e horizonta ength insta ations.
NOTE:F ex section with no vertica rise must not exceed maximum
horizonta ength of 3 feet (seeFigure12). F ex runs over 3 feet must fa

Attach an PEL-45 (45° e bow) direct y onto the f ue co ar. Cut the
PXT-20 to suit, and attach it to the PEL-45. S ide the firep ace into
position and attach to the termination.
Heat Shields
Due to high f ue temperatures, heat shie ds are required on a C34-DV
insta ations (except those with vertica terminations) at the point where
the venting connects to the termination. With the heat shie d, vent
c earances can be maintained at 1". *Heat Shie ds are inc uded

1. Straight Installation.
The height from the hearth to the center of the termination is 28
3/8". C34-DV Rear Vent versions are supp ied with a 20" extension
pipe (PXT-20) with fema e/fema e connections. For shorter
insta ations, cut the PXT-20 to the desired ength.
For extended insta ations, use the PXT-20 section as supp ied for a
20" vent run.

B. Multi-Elbow Installations
For more diffiicu t insta ation situations, the C34-DV Rear Vent may be
insta ed with two — 90° e bows and up to 15' of horizonta run. If using
this insta ation option, you must adhere to the fo owing guide ines:
■the first 90° e bow must be p aced direct y on the f ue co ar
■you must have a minimum vertica ift of 50" (measured from the
hearth)
■your vent run must fa within the imits set by Figure 18a

horizonta run to the wa f ange of the vent termination is 108", this
would NOT be an acceptable installation.

Finishing Around the Fireplace
Combustib e mante s and mou dings may be safe y insta ed over the top
and on the front of the firep ace provided that they do not project beyond
shaded area shown in Figure 19a. Side wa c earances are 3".
Combustib e surrounds may be insta ed with 3" c earance to the side of
the firep ace as shown in Figure19b.
Fireplace Facing
When se ecting the finish materia for your firep ace, it is important to
remember the fo owing: MUSTNOTBEOBSTRUCTEDINANYWAY
- to do so restricts the air supply for the control compartments
and heat exchanger it also prevents access for servicing
controls.
The face of the firep ace may be painted to match the room decor,
provided you use a heat-resistant paint. Decorative facing must not
extend past the firep ace opening at a , because it wi interfere with the
access to retainers for remova of g ass door.

Mantels & Surrounds
NOTE: Nationa Canadian Gas Association mante test requirements are
for fire hazard prevention to combustib e materia s.
New techno ogy, to meet consumer and government demands for the
wise use of energy, has prompted us to manufacture many mode s of
firep aces which are hot, fue and energy efficient.
P ease be aware; temperatures over the mante wi rise above norma
room temperature and wa s above firep ace may be hot to touch.
We recommend carefu consideration be given to the effects of e evated
mante temperatures which may be in excess of product design, for
examp e: cand es, p astic or pictures. This can cause me ting, deforma-
tion, disco oration or premature fai ure of T.V. and radio components.
Painting:
Specia care is recommended by the Master Painters and Decorators
Association, when painting the firep ace surrounds, to se ect and app y a
qua ity Alkydsealer prior to the app ying of atex paints. This is to

Remove the trim (as described on the next page) to access the door
atches. Open the atches by pu ing Part A upwards and towards you to
disengage Part B from the door. Lift Part B c ear of the door. Repeat for

Re-installing the door:
To re-insta the door, ti t the top edge towards you and ine up the tabs of
the bottom of the door with the s ots on the firep ace. P ace the tabs into
the s ots, and ti t the top of the door back towards the firep ace as far as it
wi go. C ose the atches by hooking Part B onto the groove at the top of
the door and pushing Part A down comp ete y.

Installing the Trim & Baffle
The firep ace is shipped with 6 horizonta trim pieces (3 upper and 3
ower), which must be fie d-insta ed.
Insta the trim by p acing the top edge of the trim over to the retainer c ips
on either side of the firep ace. Push the bottom edge firm y inwards and
the trim wi snap on. (Seefigure25) Insta the upper trim pieces so that
the baff e is resting between the top and midd e piece, as shown be ow.
The trim piece with the Montigo Emb em shou d be insta ed on the ower
midd e c ips with the emb em on the right side.
Installing the Log Set
Installing the Logs:
The C34-DVis supp ied with five ceramic fibre ogs. Unpack the ogs and
hand e them very carefu y.
1. Remove the door cover and the g ass door.
2. P ace the Back og onto the back og rest as shown be ow in figure
24a. The og has ip on the bottom which fits into the sot on the og rest.
3. P ace the Front og onto the front og rest as shown in figure 24a.
Center the og from side to side, and push it against the back of
the og rest. Carefu y push the og onto the meta spikes on the og rest.
4. P ace the top ogs in position as shown in figure 24b, p ace the
centre og down first, then the right and eft ogs.
5. Start the firep ace. If the f ame appears satisfactory, rep ace the
g ass door and door cover.

about (1) minute after the pi ot is it. Re ease the knob and it
wi pop back up. Pi ot shou d remain it. If it goes out repeat
steps 3 through 8.

convenience a 1/8" manifo d pressure tap is supp ied on the gas
va ve for a test gauge connection. See Figure 27.

5.5" W.C. and a manifo d pressure of 3.5" W.C.
For PropaneGasthis app iance requires a minimum in et pressure
of 11" W.C. and a manifo d pressure of 10" W.C.

Burner Adjustment
The C34-DV is equipped with an adjustab e burner, a owing you to
raise or ower the f ames. To adjust the f ames, ocate the b ack knob
marked 'Hi-Lo', in the centre of the gas contro va ve (See Figure 26).
The front burners are not adjustab e.
■To raise the f ame height, turn the b ack knob ( ocated behind the
ower trim) counterclockwise.
■To ower the f ame height, turn clockwise.

Cleaning
When the firep ace is first activated, there may be some smoking and a
visib e fi m may be eft on the g ass. This is a norma condition, and is the
resu t of burning of protective coatings on new meta .
G ass must be c eaned periodica y to remove any fi m (which is a
norma biproduct of combustion) which may be visib e. Fi m can
easi y be removed by removing the door, as shown on page 12-13.
Hand e the door carefu y, and c ean it with non-abrasive g ass
c eaners. One of the most effective products is Ke Kem.
Si icone sea s on inner door during initia firing wi "off gas", eaving a
visua deposit of a white substance on combustion chamber wa s.
This can easi y be removed using norma househo d products.
Use a vacuum c eaner or whisk broom to keep the contro
compartment, burner, and firebox free from dust and int.
Logs may be c eaned periodica y with a vacuum to remove soot or
other contaminates.

burner on. Coat pipe and tubing joints, gasket etc. with soap so ution.

The Companies warrants the Montigo Gas App iance to be free from defects in materia s and workmanship at the time of manufacture. On the Montigo, there is a ten-
year warranty on the firebox and its components, a five-year warranty on the main burner and pi ot burner, and a one-year warranty on the gas contro va ve and fibre ogs.

Remedy And Exclusions
The coverage of this Warranty is imited to a components of the Gas App iance manufactured by The Companies.
This Warranty on y covers Montigo Gas App iances insta ed in the United States or Canada.
If the components of the Gas App iance covered by this Warranty are found to be defective within the time frame stated (see The Companies right of investigation out ined
be ow). The Companies wi , at its option, rep ace or repair defective components of the Gas App iance manufactured by The Companies at no charge, and wi a so pay
for reasonab e abour costs incurred in rep acing or repairing components. If repair or rep acement is not commercia y practica , The Companies wi , at its option, refund
the purchase price of the Montigo Gas App iance.
This Warranty covers on y parts and abour as provided above. In no case sha The Companies be responsib e for materia s, components, or construction which are not
