To Original Commercial Purchaser
General Instrument Corporation doing business as the Broadband Communications Sector of Motorola,
Inc. (“Motorola BCS”) hereby warrants only to the original commercial purchaser of SE-1010 / SE-2000
Encoder(s) (“Encoder”) (“You”), that such Encoder and the media upon which any software is furnished
in connection with the Encoder shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of
twelve (12) months commencing from date of shipment for commercial use.
The warranties set above shall not apply (i) to any Encoder or media subjected to accident, misuse,
neglect, alteration, improper handling, improper transport, improper storage, improper use or application,
improper installation, improper testing or unauthorized repair, or (ii) to cosmetic problems or defects
which result from normal wear and tear under ordinary use, and do not affect the performance or use of
the Encoder or media.
During the term of the Warranty Period, Motorola BCS’s sole and exclusive liability will be, at its
expense, to either repair or replace any nonconforming Equipment returned to Motorola BCS. A
replacement unit need not be new. Equipment returned for repairs shall be packed securely by You and
shall be shipped prepaid, together with a statement setting forth the claimed defect, to Motorola BCS’
designated repair facility. Motorola BCS shall prepay and bear the cost of freight for shipments to You of
repaired or replaced Encoders.
THE FOREGOING IS IN LIEU OF ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY OR
OTHERWISE IN CONNECTION WITH FURNISHING THE GOODS, SOFTWARE, AND SERVICES

Introduction
Congratulations on the recent purchase of Motorola’s SE-1010 / SE-2000 Encoder. The
SE-1010 / SE-2000 Encoder represents Motorola Broadband Communication Sector’s (BCS)
sixth generation video compression technology in a compact chassis that is ideally suited for
the cable headend, small broadcast, and high bandwidth contribution applications.
The SE-1010 / SE-2000 Encoder follows Motorola BCS’s long tradition for providing
exceptional video quality such as:
•Automatic film detection and telecine processing
•Adaptive field/frame processing
•Scene change detection
•Adaptive quantization level processing
•Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) compliance
•Support for 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 encoding modes (The SE-1010 Encoder supports only 4:2:0.)
•Pure Pixel™ two-pass encoding (The SE-1010 Encoder does not have this feature.)
•Adaptive temporal/spatial noise filtering
•ScenePreview scene change detection
•Proactive buffer management
•Improved motion estimation processing

2000 Encoder. Please read this manual before starting installation.

The SE encoder is ideal for encoding at digital cable head-ends, electronic newsgathering,
ATSC broadcasting, and for DVB satellite distribution.
Note: Please refer to the documentation that comes with the IRT, TMX-2010, and/or MPS for
configuration information of those devices. Because the SE encoder does not output system
time, the downstream device must supply system time.
For the SE encoder-to-IRT application, an SNTP Time Server must be used to provide system
time to the IRT. For part numbers and other details, see “Connectors and Required Cables”
on page 31.
For digital cable head-ends, a number of SE encoders can be used to digitize analog
programming for inclusion in the digital tier. The following high-level diagrams show
example configurations.
Example 1 shows an SE encoder connected to an IRT.
Example 2 shows several SE encoders connected to an MPS.
Example 3 shows SE encoders connected to a TMX-2010 that is connected to a SEM.

Installation
The information in this chapter provides easy guidelines for installing the SE encoder. The
following diagram shows the front panel:
Inventory and Installation
To prevent damage and/or safety hazards, always handle the SE encoder with care. Use the
SE encoder only according to instructions provided in this product manual. For part numbers
and other details, see “Connectors and Required Cables” on page 31.

Mounting
The encoder with the supplied mounting brackets is designed for installation in an EIA
standard 19-inch (480 mm) equipment rack. When mounting the encoder in a rack, use pan or
round head screws and washers in all four front panel mounting locations. This ensures a
secure mount for the size and weight of the unit. Please provide screws that match the rack.
SE encoders are stackable, one on top of another, within arack, without any spacing
requirements. Place each SE encoder in a stable and level position within the rack and ensure
that all front enclosure screws are tightened to 2 ft.-lbs. If multiple SE encoders are installed
in a rack assembly, the operator may choose to have a certification agency evaluate the
condition of the rack.
Positioning
When positioning the SE encoder:
•To prolong service life, make sure that the area around the SE encoder is free of dust and
other airborne particles.
•Operate the SE encoder in a temperature-controlled environment. Do not place the
encoder near a heat source.
•Do not install multiple SE encoders so that the air intake from one unit is aligned with the
outlet of another.
•Do not install an SE encoder in areas of high humidity or where water can infiltrate the unit.
•To avoid magnetic interference from the high-voltage cable, do not run AC power cables
and signal leads in the same duct.
For signal information for the various connectors, see “Connector Pinouts” on page 29. The
following diagram shows the back panel.
Note: For applications that use the Analog Video In
connector, attach a 75–ohm termination to the Analog
Video Loop Thru connector.

Basic Operation
Navigation
When the encoder powers up, the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) displays the software version:
Use the front panel’s four arrow and ENTER buttons to navigate the LCD’s two
40-character lines.
Use the up ( /\ ) and down ( \/ ) arrow buttons to scroll through the following nine menus:

Continue using the up ( /\ ) and down ( \/ ) arrow buttons until the Preset menu displays as
shown below.
Navigational Legend
The first four characters on the Edit Line (second line) show the navigational legend. The
legend shows which arrow buttons can be used to navigate through menus. The following
diagram shows the legend with the corresponding arrow and ENTER buttons.
< indicates that you can press the left ( < ) arrow button.
> indicates that you can press the right ( > ) arrow button.
| (vertical line) indicates that you can press the up ( /\ ) or down ( \/ ) arrow button.
E indicates that you can press the ENTER button.

Menu Description
The LCD screen’s top line is named the Menu Line and it displays all the menu options. The
bottom line is named the Edit Line and it displays the navigational legend and all encoder
options. Each of the nine menus has a Menu Line and Edit Line.
The Preset menu has the following eight options:

Because this menu has more options than the LCD screen can display at one time, press the
left and right arrow buttons to see the other options.
Note: “Preset” is the name of this menu, so the word “Preset” does not scroll. Only the
options scroll.
Selecting an Option
Use the left and right arrow buttons to move the pointer to Audio1 option.
Note: Always verify that the pointer (>) appears at the left of the option. To assist the reader
to see the selected area, this manual shows abox around the selected option as shown above.
Editing an Option
To edit an option
1. Navigate to the desired option on the Menu Line and press the ENTER button.
A blinking cursor appears on the Edit Line.
2. Go to the Std option. To move the cursor right and left, press the left and right arrow
buttons.
3. To change the setting to MP2, use the up and down arrow buttons.
The diagram below shows the Preset menu with Audio1 selected and Std is set to MP2.
4. To confirm the change and return the pointer to the Menu Line, press the ENTER button.

Activating Presets
The Preset menu has 30 presets. Preset options can be changed as needed. Each time a setting
is changed and the ENTER button is pressed, the change is saved as part of the current preset.
Notice that the change made on page 7 of this manual applies to Preset 1.
After redefining several options within a preset, the operator will want to navigate to another
preset and make changes there also. The presets are numbered 1 to 30 and each preset has a
name. For example, an operator may want to change “Preset 1” to “High Res NTSC.”
To activate another preset
1. Navigate to the Preset menu and use the left and right arrow buttons on the Menu Line to
position the pointer (>) to the left of Preset as shown above.
2. Press the ENTER button to move the blinking cursor to the Edit Line. The blinking
cursor should be on the Preset number.
3. Use the up and down buttons to select the desired Preset number.
4. Press the ENTER button to select that Preset.
5. Verify that the LCD displays the following warning message:
6. To confirm, press the ENTER button again.
or
To stay with the current preset and remove the warning message from the LCD screen,
press any of the four arrow buttons (Left, Right, Up, or Down).
CAUTION
To maintain uninterrupted service, always make changes while offline. Making important
changes to the SE encoder will display the following message which is displayed any time
the change will result in a service interruption.

The SE encoder provides a Form_C contact closure to trigger alarm equipment. The following
diagram shows the Form_C port on the left of the back panel. To view the error messages that

Preset Menu
The SE encoder has 30 presets. To review the factory-defined presets, see Table 1 on page 9.
Use the Preset menu to select the desired preset configuration.
To access the Preset menu and view options
1. Navigate to the Preset menu as shown below:
2. Press the right arrow ( > ) button to access the submenu: Name, Video, Audio1, Audio2,
VBI, PID, or PGM.
Name Parameter
To change the name of a preset
1. To access the Name parameter in the Preset menu, press the right arrow ( > ) button until
the pointer is in front of the name and press ENTER.
2. Press the right and left arrow buttons to move the pointer to the name.
3. For each character in the name:
•Use the up and down arrow buttons to enter another letter or number.
•Use the right arrow button to move the cursor to the next character.
•Use the left arrow button to move the cursor backward.
Note: Names can be up to 28 characters.

Video Options
To access a preset’s video options, press the right arrow ( > ) button until the pointer is in
front of Video and press ENTER. Use the arrow buttons to view or change video options.
Table 2 describes each option.

In Input Use this option to select an input and format type:
NTSC : Selects NTSC analog composite input
PAL : Selects PAL analog composite input
PAL-M : Selects PAL 525 analog composite input
525SDI: Selects Serial Digital Component Video, 525 line
625SDI: Selects Serial Digital Component Video, 625 line
OFF : Video is not enabled
Res Resolution Use this option to select a horizontal resolution: 720, 704, 544,
528, 480, or 352.
For NTSC, PAL-M, and 525SDI, the vertical resolution is 480.
SE-2000 encoders also supports a vertical resolution of 512.
For PAL and 625SDI, the vertical resolution is 576. Higher res-
olutions give improved picture detail, but require higher bitrates
to maintain details without noticeable compression artifacts.
Rate Bit Rate Select the desired video packet bit-rate (video transport stream
rate) as shown below:
SE-1010 : 1.00 Mbps to 15.00 Mbps (in 10 kbps increments)
SE-2000 : 0.50 Mbps to 15.00 Mbps (in 10 kbps increments)
GOP Group of

Use this option to select a GOP rate: 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21,
24, 27, or 30. The default is 15. GOP is the number of frames
that occur before an Iframe is repeated. For example, a

Audio1 and Audio2 Options
The Audio1 and Audio2 menus operate in the same way. To view or change the Audio1 or
Audio2 parameter in the Preset menu, press the right arrow ( > ) button until the pointer is in
front of the Audio1 or Audio2 option. The following diagram shows the pointer in front of
Audio1. Table 3 describes each option.

Standard
Use this option to select the desired audio standard: AC3,
MP2 (MPEG Layer 2), or OFF. For all ATSC and DigiCipher®
II applications, select AC3. The OFF selection disables audio.
Mode Audio Mode This Audio Mode option has a prefix (to set the desired input)
and a suffix (to set the desired audio compression). First use
the up and down arrow buttons to select the desired input:
SDI: Extracts embedded audio from the SDIvideo input
(CCIR601). See SDIChannel at the bottom on
next page.
DG : Takes audio from external digital audio input.
AN : Takes audio from the analog audio input.
To access the suffix, press the right arrow ( > ) and use the up
and down arrow buttons to set the desired audio processing:
Stereo, Joint, Mono L, Mono, Mono R, Dual (Dual Mono), or
Precmp (pre-compressed).
Note: Most applications use Stereo coding for the primary
audio, and either Stereo or Dual Mono for the Secondary
Audio Programs (SAP).
Rate Audio Rate Use this option to select the audio compression rate in kbps
(elementary stream bitrate). The options are 96, 112, 128,
160, 192, 224, 256, 320, 384, 448, 512, 576, and 640. For
more details, see “Audio Processing” at the bottom of page 34.
