INTRODUCTION
The
Motic
SMZ-171seriesstereomicroscopesarehighperformanceGreenoughdesign
stereomicroscopes
with
continuouszoomrangesof6.7:1.Themicroscopesinthisseriesallow
continuousvariablemagnificationbetween7.5X-50X,while
total
magnificationvariesfrom2.25Xto
200X
dependingontheeyepiecesandauxiliaryobjectives
used.
Withthebilateralzoomknobs,users
areabletoadjustmagnificationwhilethemicroscoperemainsperfectlyparfocal.
TheSMZ-171istheidealinstrumentforexaminingobjectsofindustrial,biological,medicalor
educationalnature.Optional
with
ESDfeature,
with
headandstand.

Inshort,ESDistherapidneutralizationofcharge.Weknow
that
allmatterismadeofatoms,consisting
ofelectronsandprotons.Whenthematerialgainsorloseselectron,itwillloseitsbalanceandbecome
negativelyorpositivelycharged.Positiveornegativechargeaccumulationonthesurfacewillmake
staticelectricityonobject,usuallycausingdamagetotheelectroniccomponents.

2.UNPACKINGANDASSEMBLINGTHEMICROSCOPE
2.1
Unpacking
the
IVIicroscope
The
componentsforSMZ-171stereomicroscopesareshippeddetachedforprotection.Openthe
styrofoampacking
with
careanddonotleaveanycomponentsattachedtothepackingbeingremoved.
Do
notdiscardanyofthepackingmaterials
until
allofthecomponentshavebeenidentified.Ifany
damage
occursduringtransit,contactboththecarrierandyoursupplierimmediately.
2.2AssemblingtheMicroscope
2.2.1Whenhandlingthecomponents,especiallytheopticalparts,avoidtouchinganylenssurfaces
with
barehandsorfingersasfingerprintsandgreasestainsaffectimagequality.
2.2.2Afterunpackingthestand,putitona stableand
flat
table.Loosenthelockingscrewofthe
head
holder,adjusttheheightoftheheadholderandlockthelockingscrewagain.Make
sure
that
thesupportcollarissecured
firmly
belowtheheadholderalongtheverticalpost.
This
isimportantasthiscollarkeepsthemicroscopefromslidingdownthecolumn.
2.2.3Theheadholdershouldrestonthesupportcollarandboththeheadholderlockingscrewand
thecollarlockingscrewshouldbetightened.
2.2.4Putthestereobodyontotheheadholderandlockitusingthelockingscrewlocatedonthe
right
handsideoftheheadholder.Tomaintainthebeststability,youareadvisedtolockthe
screw
onthe
left
handsideoftheheadholderaswell.
2.2.5Afterremovingthewrappingpapersandpackingmaterialsaroundtheeyepiecesandother
opticalparts(avoidtouchingthelenssurfaces),carefullyplacetheeyepieces
into
theeyepiece
tubesandsecurethemusingthelockingscrews.Ifnecessary,loosenthelockingscrewsbefore
putting
intheeyepieces.
2.2.6Beforeturningonthepower,plugtheilluminationpowercord
into
thesocketatthetopofthe
column.
Next,plugthepowercordofthemainframe
into
thelocalpowersupply.
Note:
before
plugging
in and
turning
onthe
power,
make
sure
that
the
operation
voltage
ofthe
microscope
matches
the
voltage
ofthelocal
power
supply.

3.MICROSCOPE
ALIGNMENT
ANDOPERATION
3.1
Interpupillary
Distance
Adjustthetwoeyepiecetubes
until
onlyonecircularfieldcanbeseenthroughthetwoeyepieces.Iftwo
separatecirclesappear,theinterpupillarydistanceistoolarge;iftwooverlappingcirclesappear,the
interpupillarydistanceistoo
small.
Theeyepiecetubeallowsa flexibleadjustmentoftheinterpupillary
distancebetween48and75mm.
3.2FocusingtheMicroscope
To
focusthesample,usethefocusingknobslocatedonbothsidesoftheheadholder(Fig.3).By
turningtheseknobs,themicroscopecanbemovedupordowna certaindistancetofocusthesample.
This
movementisenabledbya
"rack
andpinion"mechanism.Thetensionofthefocusingknobcan
beadjustedusingthetensionknoblocatedintheinnerregionofthefocusingknobonthe
right
(Fig.4).

3.2.1Usingthefocusingknob,focusthesampleusingthehighestmagnificationstrength.Ifthe
sample
cannotbebrought
into
focus,adjusttheheightofthemicroscopealongthecolumn.
Remember
totightenthelockingscrewandsupportcollarafteradjustingtheheightofthe
microscope.
3.2.2Turnthezoomtothehighestmagnification.Adjustthefocusingknob
until
a clearandsharp
imageisobtained.
3.2.3Turnthezoomtothelowestmagnification.Adjustthe
right
eyepiecediopter
until
theimage
seen
throughthe
right
eyepieceisclearandsharp.

3.2.4Repeattheprocedureforthe
left
eyepiece.Next,checktheimagefocusfortheentirezoom
range;itshouldnowbeperfectlyparfocal.
3.3
Magnification
and
Working
Distance
3.3.1Selectthedesiredmagnificationstrengthbyadjustingthezoomknob.Changetheoptional
eyepieces
and/oraddanoptionalauxiliaryobjective,forotherrangeofmagnification.
3.3.2Totalmagnificationusedcanbecalculatedusingthefollowingequation:
Totalmagnification= EyepiecemagnificationX ZoommagnificationX
Objectivelensmagnification.
3.3.3Workingdistancevaries
from
301mm(whenusinga 0.3Xobjectivelens)to38.6mm(whena 2X
objectivelensisused).Normalworkingdistanceforstandardconfiguration(IXobjectivelens)is
110mm.
3.4
Changing
theBulb
3.4.1Beforechangingthe
light
bulb,makesure
that
thepowerisswitchedoffandthepowercordhas
been
disconnected
from
themainpowersupply.
3.4.2Forincident
light,
removethelampcollectorpiecebyAllenkeysupplied
with
theinstrument,
unplugtheoldLEDcircuitboard
from
thesocketandcarefullypluginthenewLEDcircuitboard.
Screw
thecollectorpiecebackinafterchangingtheoldone.

3.4.3Fortransmitted
light,
turn
themicroscopeoverso
that
thebottomplateofthestandfaces
towardstheuser.Removethebottomplate
with
thesuppliedAllenkey,unplugthelamp
collectorpiece,removetheoldLEDcircuitboardfromthesocketandcarefullypluginthenew
LED
circuitboard.Finally,
firmly
securethebottomplateafterchangingtheoldone.
3.4.4Nevertouchtheglasssurfaceofthe
light
bulb
with
barehands.Anygreaseonthe
light
bulbwill
affectheatdissipation,greatlyshorteningthelifespanofthe
light
bulb.Ifthesurfaceofthebulb
has
beenaccidentallytouched,clean
with
alcoholandtissue.
4.
KNOWING
YOURMICROSCOPE
4.1
Stereo
Body
with
Binocularor
Trinocular
Head
For
theSMZ-171stereomicroscopes,thebinocularortrinoculartubesare
built
into
thestereobodyto
forma single
unit
calleda
"Stereo-head".
TheSMZ-171BL(Fig.1)isequipped
with
a binoculartube
whiletheSMZ-171TL(Fig.2)isequipped
with
a trinoculartube.
4.1.1StereoBody
•TheStereobodyisthekeycomponentofthemicroscope.ItincludestheGreenoughstereo-zoom
system
with
a continuouszoomrangeof6.7:1.Italsoincludesseparate
left
and
right
non-telescopic
opticssystems.
•Withthissystem,usersareabletoenjoyexcellentdepthoffieldandstereoeffects.Withthehelpof
precisionopticsfrom
M5(Y,
perfectparfocalityismaintainedthroughouttheentirezoomrange.
•Thezoomknobsarelocatedonbothsidesofthemicroscopeand
scales
areprintedontheknobsto
displaythecuYrrentmagnification.Adjusttheseknobstochangethemagnificationoftheimage.Ifthe
microscope
hasbeenproperlyadjusted,theimageshouldremaininfocusevenwhenthe
magnificationischanged(parfocal).Foradjustmentprocedures,refertosection
3.2
ofthismanual.
•Thestereobodyismountedontothecircularmountoftheheadholderandislocked
into
place
usingthelockingscrewonthe
right
handsideoftheholder.Whileoperatingthemicroscope,this
lockingscrewshouldalwaysbelockedtomaintainutmoststability.

Binoculartubeforthe

•Theinterpupillarydistancecanbeadjustedbymovingthetwoeyepiecetubeshorizontally.For
properinterpupillarydistanceadjustment(Fig.6),refertosection
3.1
ofthismanual.
•N-WFeyepiece,higheye-point10X(023),diopteradjustable,interchangeable
with
biological
Eyepieces.

4.1.3
Trinoculartubeforthe
SMZ-171T
•Theproceduresforadjustingtheinterpupillarydistanceandsecuringtheeyepiecesarethesamefor
thetrinoculartubeastheyareforthebinoculartube.
•Byturningtheknobatthe
left
sideofthetrinoculartube,allthelightfromthe
right
eyepiecetubewill
be
deflectedintothephototubefortheattachedimagingdevice.
•Atthetopofthetrinoculartube,thereisa lockingscrew
that
isusedtosecuretheadapterforthe
imagingdevice.After
fitting
theadapter,thislockingscrewshouldbetightened.
•N-WFeyepiece,higheye-point10X(023),diopteradjustable,interchangeable
with
biological
eyepieces

differentstandsareavailableforthe
SMZ-171:
4.2.1LEDstand

•Newstand
with
reflectordesigntoreachmorehomogeneousilluminationandlowertemperature;the
angle
ofthereflectorcanbeadjustedbyturningthereflectorcontrolonthe
left
handsideofthe
base.

lampstospecializedringilluminators.
4.3.2A speciallydesignedcold
light
sourceemployinga 12V/150Whalogenilluminatoris
recommendedasa
light
source.Sucha
light
sourceallowsuserstobendand
twist
thearmin
anydirectioninordertoachievethebestpossibleillumination.Aswell,
with
a cold
light
source,
noheatistransmittedtothespecimenmakingitidealforuseinbiologicalresearchand
anatomy.

5.CLEANINGANDCARINGFORTHEMICROSCOPE
To
keepthemicroscopeingoodworkingorder,avoid
dust
and
water.
Ifanydustorwaterhappensto
getintothemicroscope,funguswillgrow,damagingthemicroscope.
Please
note
that
oncefungushas
grown,evenaftercleaning,theproblemmayreoccur.
Grease
stains
and
fingerprints
affectimagequality;avoidallowingfingerstocomeintocontact
with
thesurfaceofopticalcomponents.
5.1
Protection
against
Dust
Iftheinstrumentisnottobeusedfora longperiodoftime,coverit
with
thedustcoverprovided.Never
leave
theeyepiecetubeexposed.Eitherleavetheeyepieceinthetube(recommendedifthe
microscope
isfrequentlyused)orcoverit
with
wrappingpaperora coveringcap.
Eyepieces
andother
opticalcomponents
that
willnotbeusedfora relativelylongperiodoftimeshouldbestoredina dry
cardboardbox,preferably
with
a desiccatingagentadded,toshieldagainstdustandmoisture.
5.2
Protection
against
Water
and
IVIoisture
The
instrumentshouldbekeptawayfromallwatersources,includingpipesandsinks.Humidityinthe
roomwheretheinstrumentlocatedshouldbekeptaslowaspossible(relativehumidityshouldbekept
below70%).Itisrecommended
that
opticalcomponentsbekeptina dryboxwhennotinuse,
preferably
with
a desiccatingagentadded.Theuseofdehumidifierand/or24-hourairconditioningis
highlyrecommendedifthesurroundingareaishumid.
5.3Cleaning
5.3.1Ifdustisfoundontheopticalsurface,removebyusinganairblowerorcompressedair.
5.3.2Forfingerprint,greasestainsordustwhichcannotberemovedusingair,twopossiblemethods
arerecommended:
•Breathelightlyontheglasssurfaceandwipe
with
a cleanpieceofcloth,lenspaperorcottonswab.
Please
note
that
smallcottonfibersmayremainonthesurfaceofthelensifa cottonswabis
used.
•Usea cottonswaborlenspaperdippedina smallamountofpurealcoholandcleanthelenssurface
carefully.Nootheraggressivesolventsshouldbe
used.

Under
nocircumstancesshoulduserscleananylenssurface
with
a dry
cotton
swab,dry
cloth
ordrylens
paper
as
this
will
scratchthelenssurfacecausing
irreparable
damage.
Water
isnot
recommended
forcleaninglensesasit
will
leave
water
stains
onthelenssurface,
possibly
leading
tofungus
growth
andcausing
irreparable
damage.
5.4
Moving
theMicroscope
5.4.1Themicroscopeshouldbemovedaroundas
little
aspossible.
5.4.2Ifitisnecessarytomovethemicroscope,usersshouldensure
that
theeyepiecesarefirmly
secured
intheeyepiecetubes,themicroscopefirmlysecuredtotheverticalpostandthe
supportcollarfirmlysecuredbeforemoving.
5.4.3Whenmovingthemicroscope,usebothhands,onehandholdingthebottomofthestandand
theotherhandholdingthetopoftheverticalpostoftheheadholderofthemicroscope.
5.4.4Themicroscopeshouldalwaysbekeptuprightwhilemoving.
5.5Electrical
Parts
oftheMicroscope
5.5.1Beforepluggingthepowercordintothepowersupply,makesure
that
thesupplyvoltage
matches
theoperationvoltageoftheequipment.
5.5.2Turntheequipmentoffbeforepluggingthepowercordintothepowersupply.
5.5.3Itisrecommended
that
users
turn
downtheilluminationbeforeturningofftheequipment.
5.5.4Donot
turn
thepoweronagainimmediatelyafterithasbeenturnedoffasthiswillshortenthe
lifespanofthelightbulbandmaycausedamagetotheelectricalsystem.
5.5.5
Users
shouldobservealllocalsafetyregulations.WhiletheequipmentisCEsafetyapproved,
users
areexpectedtousetheequipmentina safeandresponsiblemanner.
