FINDING MODEL NUMBER
This Operator’s Manual is an important part of your new lawn mower. It will help you assemble, prepare and main-
tain the unit for best performance. Please read and understand what it says.
Before you start assembling your new equipment, please locate the model plate on the equipment and copy the
information from it in the space provided below. A sample model plate is also given below. You can locate the
model plate by standing at the operating position and looking down at the rear of the deck . This information will

General Operation
•Read this operator’s manual carefully in its entirety before at-
tempting to assemble this machine. Read, understand, and
follow all instructions on the machine and in the manual(s)
before operation. Be completely familiar with the controls and
the proper use of this machine before operating it. Keep this
manual in a safe place for future and regular reference and for
ordering replacement parts.
•This machine is a precision piece of power equipment, not a
plaything. Therefore, exercise extreme caution at all times.
Your unit has been designed to perform one job: to mow
grass. Do not use it for any other purpose.
•Never allow children under 14 years old to operate this ma-
chine. Children 14 years old and over should read and
understand the instructions in this manual and should be
trained and supervised by a parent. Only responsible individu-
als who are familiar with these rules of safe operation should
be allowed to use this machine.
•Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be
used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones, toys and other
foreign objects which could be tripped over or picked up and
thrown by the blade. Thrown objects can cause serious per-
sonal injury. Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of
material toward roads, sidewalks, bystanders and the like.
Also, avoid discharging material against a wall or obstruction
which may cause discharged material to ricochet back toward
the operator.
•To help avoid blade contact or a thrown object injury, stay in
the operator zone behind the handles and keep children, by-
standers, helpers and pets at least 75 feet from the mower
while it is in operation. Stop machine if anyone enters the
area.
•Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles during operation
and while performing an adjustment or repair to protect your
eyes. Thrown objects which ricochet can cause serious injury
to the eyes.
•Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-fitting slacks
and shirts. Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and
steel-toed shoes are recommended. Never operate this ma-
chine in bare feet, sandals, slippery or light weight (e.g.
canvas) shoes.
•Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or under the cut-
ting deck. Contact with the blade can amputate hands and
feet.
•A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade con-
tact or thrown object injuries.
•Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled
over the foot during a fall caused by slipping or tripping. Do
not hold on to the mower if you are falling; release the handle
immediately.
•Never pull the mower back toward you while you are walking.
If you must back the mower away from a wall or obstruction
first look down and behind to avoid tripping and then follow
these steps:
a. Step back from the mower to fully extend your arms.
b. Be sure you are well balanced with sure footing.
c. Pull the mower back slowly, no more than half way to-
ward you.
d. Repeat these steps as needed.
•Do not operate the mower while under the influence of alco-
hol or drugs.
•Do not engage the self-propelled mechanism on units so
equipped while starting engine.
•The blade control handle is a safety device. Never attempt to
bypass its operation. Doing so makes the safety device inop-
erative and may result in personal injury through contact with
the rotating blade. The blade control handle must operate
easily in both directions and automatically return to the disen-
gaged position when released.
•Never operate the mower in wet grass. Always be sure of your
footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If
you feel you are losing your footing, release the blade control
handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating within
three seconds.
•Mow only in daylight or in good artificial light. Walk, never run.
•Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives, walks or roads.
•If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the
engine and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is gen-
erally a warning of trouble.
•Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a com-
plete stop before removing the grass catcher or unclogging
the chute. The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few sec-
onds after the engine is shut off. Never place any part of the
body in the blade area until you are sure the blade has
stopped rotating.
•Never operate mower without proper trail shield, discharge
cover, grass catcher, blade control handle or other safety pro-
tective devices in place and working. Never operate mower
with damaged safety devices. Failure to do so, can result in
personal injury.
•Muffler and engine become hot and can cause a burn. Do not
touch.
•Only use parts and accessories made for this machine by the
manufacturer. Failure to do so can result in personal injury.
•If situations occur which are not covered in this manual, use
care and good judgment. Call customer assistance for the
name of your nearest servicing dealer.

WARNING: Engine Exhaust, some of its constituents, and certain vehicle components contain or emit
chemicals known to State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.
DANGER: This machine was built to be operated according to the rules for safe operation in this man-
ual. As with any type of power equipment, carelessness or error on the part of the operator can result
in serious injury. This machine is capable of amputating hands and feet and throwing objects. Failure
to observe the following safety instructions could result in serious injury or death.

Slope Operation
Slopes are a major factor related to slip and fall accidents
which can result in severe injury. Operation on slopes requires
extra caution. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it. For
your safety, use the slope gauge included as part of this man-
ual to measure slopes before operating this unit on a sloped
or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 degrees, do not
mow it.
Do:
•Mow across the face of slopes; never up and down. Exercise
extreme caution when changing direction on slopes.
•Watch for holes, ruts, rocks, hidden objects, or bumps which
can cause you to slip or trip. Tall grass can hide obstacles.
•Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause seri-
ous personal injury. If you feel you are losing your balance,
release the blade control handle immediately, and the blade
will stop rotating within 3 seconds.
Do Not:
•Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments, you
could lose your footing or balance.
•Do not mow slopes greater than 15 degrees as shown on the
slope gauge.
•Do not mow on wet grass. Unstable footing could cause slip-
ping.
Children
Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the
presence of children. Children are often attracted to the mower
and the mowing activity. They do not understand the dangers.
Never assume that children will remain where you last saw
them.
•Keep children out of the mowing area and under the watchful
care of a responsible adult other than the operator.
•Be alert and turn mower off if a child enters the area.
•Before and while moving backwards, look behind and down
for small children.
•Use extreme care when approaching blind corners, doorways,
shrubs, trees, or other objects that may obscure your vision of
a child who may run into the mower.
•Keep children away from hot or running engines. They can
suffer burns from a hot muffler.
•Never allow children under 14 years old to operate a power
mower. Children 14 years old and over should read and under-
stand the operation instructions and safety rules in this manual
and should be trained and supervised by a parent.
Service
Safe Handling Of Gasoline:
•To avoid personal injury or property damage use extreme care
in handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and the
vapors are explosive. Serious personal injury can occur when
gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes which can ignite.
•Wash your skin and change clothes immediately.
•Use only an approved gasoline container.
•Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck or trailer bed
with a plastic liner. Always place containers on the ground
away from your vehicle before filling.
•Remove gas-powered equipment from the truck or trailer and
refuel it on the ground. If this is not possible, then refuel such
equipment on a trailer with a portable container, rather than
from a gasoline dispenser nozzle.
•Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or con-
tainer opening at all times until fueling is complete. Do not use
a nozzle lock-open device.
•Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources of igni-
tion.
•Never fuel machine indoors because flammable vapors will ac-
cumulate in the area.
•Never remove gas cap or add fuel while the engine is hot or run-
ning. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling.
•Never over fill fuel tank. Fill tank to no more than ½ inch below
bottom of filler neck to provide for fuel expansion.
•Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely.
•If gasoline is spilled, wipe it off the engine and equipment.
Move unit to another area. Wait 5 minutes before starting the
engine.
•Never store the machine or fuel container near an open flame,
spark or pilot light as on a water heater, space heater, furnace
,clothes dryer or other gas appliances.
•To reduce fire hazard, keep mower free of grass, leaves, or
other debris build-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage and remove
any fuel soaked debris.
•Allow a mower to cool at least 5 minutes before storing.
General Service:
•Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. En-
gine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and
deadly gas.
•Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make certain the
blade and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the
spark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent un-
intended starting.
•Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent inter-
vals for proper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade for
damage (e.g., bent, cracked, worn) Replace blade with the
original equipment manufacture’s (O.E.M.) blade only, listed in
this manual. “Use of parts which do not meet the original
equipment specifications may lead to improper performance
and compromise safety!”
•Mower blades are sharp and can cut. Wrap the blade or wear
gloves, and use extra caution when servicing them.
•Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure the equipment
is in safe working condition.
•Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper opera-
tion regularly.
•After striking a foreign object, stop the engine, disconnect the
spark plug wire and ground against the engine. Thoroughly in-
spect the mower for any damage. Repair the damage before
starting and operating the mower.
•Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment
while the engine is running.
•Grass catcher components, discharge cover, and trail shield
are subject to wear and damage which could expose moving
parts or allow objects to be thrown. For safety protection, fre-
quently check components and replace immediately with
original equipment manufacturer’s (O.E.M.) parts only, listed in
this manual. “Use of parts which do not meet the original
equipment specifications may lead to improper performance
and compromise safety!
•Do not change the engine governor setting or overspeed the
engine. The governor controls the maximum safe operating
speed of the engine.
•Maintain or replace safety labels, as necessary.
•Observe proper disposal laws and regulations. Improper dis-
posal of fluids and materials can harm the environment.
Your Responsibility
•Restrict the use of this power machine to persons who read,
understand and follow the warnings and instructions in this

Use this page as a guide to determine slopes where you may not operate safely. Do not operate your lawn mower
on such slopes.

SET-UP
This unit is shipped WITHOUT GASOLINE or OIL.
After assembly, service engine with gasoline and oil
as instructed in the separate engine manual packed
with your unit.
NOTE: Reference to right or left hand side of the
mower is observed from the operating position.
This owner’s manual covers various models of
lawnmowers. The units illustrated may vary slightly
from your unit. Follow only those instructions which
pertain to your model lawnmower.
•Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it as in-
structed in the separate engine manual packed with
your unit.
•Remove the carton inserts (if any). Remove the loose
parts which are in the carton, lift the mower from the
carton, or cut the corners of the carton and roll the
mower out.
•Pull up and back on the upper handle to raise the
handle into the operating position. Make certain the
lower handle is seated securely into the handle
mounting brackets. Tighten the large wing nuts on
each side of the handle. See Figure 1.
•Remove the hairpin clips from the outer hole in the
weld pins on the handle mounting brackets. Place
the hairpin clips in the inner hole. See Figures 2 and
3.
•Place one carriage bolt (found in the hardware pack
included with your unit) in the upper hole of the right
handle mounting bracket from the inside outward.
See Figures 2 and 3. Secure with one wing nut. Re-
peat process on the left side.
•Remove the small wing nut and the rope guide from
the starter rope. See Figure 4.
•With the spark plug wire disconnected and
grounded, hold the blade control handle against the
upper handle, and pull the starter rope out of the en-
gine. Hold the rope guide as shown so the opening
in the rope guide is toward the front of mower. Slip
the rope guide around the starter rope and into the
right side of upper handle using the hole shown.
Secure using the small wing nut.
•Fasten the cable to the lower handle with the cable
ties found on the lower handle. Pull the cable ties
tight and trim off the excess. See Figure 5.
•Make certain all nuts and bolts are tightened se-
curely.
NOTE: If the starter rope becomes disconnected
from rope guide on handle, disconnect and
ground the spark plug wire. Depress the blade
control handle and pull the starter rope out from
engine slowly. Slip the starter rope into the rope
guide on handle.

Assembly of Grass Catcher
NOTE: If your mower's grass catcher is assem-
bled, proceed to the next section. If not, follow
these steps.
NOTE: Make certain the grass bag is turned right
side out before assembling (warning label will be
on the outside).
•Place bag over frame (black plastic side is the bot-
tom of bag.) Insert the hooks on the frame through
the holes in the side plastic channels of the bag. See
Figure 6.
•Secure bag to frame by working the plastic channels
on bag over frame as shown in Figure 6. All of the
plastic channels except center top of bag attach
from the outside of bag. Center top of bag attaches
from the inside of bag.
Attaching Grass Catcher to Mower
•Lift the rear discharge door on the mower, and place
the grass catcher on the pivot rod. Let go of dis-
charge door so that it rests on the grass catcher.
See Figure 7.
NOTE: Make certain cables are routed to the
outside of the handle so they are not in the way
when attaching the grass catcher.
WARNING: Never operate the mower unless
the hooks on the grass catcher are seated
on the pivot rod, and the rear discharge door
rests firmly against the top of the grass
catcher.
To Remove the Grass Catcher
•Lift the rear discharge door on the mower as shown
in Figure 7. Lift the grass catcher up and off the pivot
rod. Release the rear discharge door.
Converting to Side Discharge
If your unit is equipped with a side discharge deflec-
tor, you can convert to a side discharge mower as
follows:
•Remove the grass catcher as previously described.
•On the side of the mower deck, lift the hinged
mulching plug. See Figure 8.
•Slide the two hooks on the side discharge deflector
under the hinge pin on the hinged mulching plug as-
sembly.
•Lower the hinged mulching plug.
NOTE: Do not remove the hinged mulching plug at
any time, even when you are not mulching.
WARNING: All mowers are equipped with a rear
protective guard. The guard helps eliminate pro-
jectiles thrown by the blade from injuring the op-
erator. DO NOT REMOVE THIS GUARD.

OPERATION
Before Starting
Service the engine with gasoline and oil as instructed
in the separate engine manual packed in your
mower. Read instructions carefully.
WARNING: Never fill fuel tank indoors, with en-
gine running or until the engine has been al-
lowed to cool for at least two minutes after run-
ning.
To Start Engine
•Attach spark plug wire to spark plug. If unit is
equipped with a rubber boot over the end of the
spark plug wire, make certain the metal loop on the
end of the spark plug wire (inside the rubber boot) is
fastened securely over the metal tip on the spark
plug. See Figure 10.
•If your unit is equipped with a primer, prime engine
as instructed in the separate engine manual packed
with your unit.
•Standing behind the unit, depress the blade control
handle and hold it against the upper handle as
shown in Figure 11.
•Grasp the starter handle as shown and pull slowly
until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly to start engine
and avoid kickback. Return it slowly to the rope
guide. See Figure 11.
The blade control handle must be depressed in order
to operate the unit. Release the blade control handle
to stop the engine and blade.
WARNING: THIS CONTROL MECHANISM IS
A SAFETY DEVICE. NEVER ATTEMPT TO BY-
PASS ITS OPERATIONS.
To Stop Engine :
•Release the blade control handle to stop the engine
and blade.
WARNING: The blade continues to rotate for a
few seconds after the engine is shut off.
•Disconnect and ground the spark plug wire as in-
structed in the separate engine manual to prevent
accidental starting while equipment is unattended.
Using Your Mulcher (Optional)
Mulching mowers use a specially designed blade to
chop the grass clippings extra fine and then blow
them back down into the lawn. The small clippings
decompose quickly becoming a natural fertilizer that
returns much of the needed nutrients to the soil.
Continuous mulching means continuous free natural
fertilization, no messy clippings to worry about ever
again and the end result for you is a much greener
healthier lawn.
WARNING: Your mower is designed to cut nor-
mal residential grass of a height no more than
10". Do not attempt to mow through unusually
tall, dry grass (e.g., pasture) or piles of dry
leaves. Debris may build up on the mower deck
or contact the engine exhaust presenting a po-
tential fire hazard.
For The Best Results When Mulching:
•Clear lawn of debris. Be sure that the lawn is clear of
stones, sticks, wire or other foreign objects which could
damage the lawnmower. Such objects could be acci-
dentally thrown out by the mower in any direction and
cause serious personal injury to the operator and others
as well as damage to property and surrounding objects.
•Do not cut wet grass. For effective mulching do not cut
wet grass because it tends to stick to the underside of
the deck preventing proper mulching of the grass clip-
pings.
•Cut no more than 1/3 the length of the grass. The
recommended cut for mulching is 1/3 the length of the
grass. Ground speed will need to be adjusted so the
clippings can be dispersed evenly into the lawn. For es-
pecially heavy cutting in thick grass it may be necessary
to use one of the slowest speeds in order to get a clean
well mulched cut. When mulching long grass you may
have to cut the lawn in two passes, lowering the blade
another 1/3 of the length for the second cut and per-
haps cutting in a different pattern than was used the first
time. Overlapping the cut a little on each pass will also
help to clean up any stray clippings left on the lawn.
The mower should always be operated at full throttle to
get the best cut and allow it to do the most effective job
of mulching.
•Clean underside of deck. Be certain to clean the un-
derside of the cutting deck after each use to avoid a
build-up of grass, which would prevent proper mulching.
•Mulching Leaves. The mulching of leaves can also be
beneficial to your lawn. When mulching leaves make
sure they are dry and are not laying too thick on the
lawn. Do not wait for all the leaves to be off the trees
before you mulch.

•It is recommended keeping driveways and sidewalks
on the operators right while moving. Continue mow-
ing using this pattern, having the left side of your
lawnmower next to the uncut grass. Mulching with
the cutting area of the mower on the lawn avoids
grass clippings in undesirable areas.
WARNING: If you strike a foreign object, stop
the engine. Remove wire from spark plug, thor-
oughly inspect the mower for any damage, and
repair the damage before restarting and operat-
ing the mower. Extensive vibration of the mower
during operation is an indication of damage. The
unit should be promptly inspected and re-
paired.
ADJUSTMENTS
CAUTION: DO NOT AT ANY TIME MAKE ANY
ADJUSTMENT TO LAWNMOWER WITHOUT FIRST
STOPPING THE ENGINE AND DISCONNECTING THE
SPARK PLUG WIRE .
Height Adjusters:
(See Figure 12).
•Stop mower and disconnect spark plug cable before
changing mower cutting height.
•The wheel adjusters give
you nine (9) different cut-
ting positions. Medium is
the best for most mowers.
•To change the height of
cut, squeeze adjuster le-
ver toward the wheel,
moving up or down to se-
lected height.
NOTE: All wheels must be
in the same height of cut.
•When cutting in heavy or moist grass, the rear of
lawnmower may be raised higher to allow better dis-
charge of the grass.
Carburetor Adjustment
Minor carburetor adjustment may be required to
compensate for differences in fuel, temperature, alti-
tude and load. Refer to the separate engine manual
packed with your mower for carburetor adjustment
information.
LUBRICATION
CAUTION: DISCONNECT SPARK PLUG WIRE
BEFORE SERVICING.
WHEELS - If your mower is equipped with ball bear-
ing wheels, lubricate at least once a season with a
light oil, all other types require no lubrication. How-
ever, if the wheels are removed for any reason,
lubricate the surface of the axle bolt and the inner
surface of the wheel with light automotive oil.
ENGINE - Follow engine manual for lubrication in-
structions.
BLADE CONTROL - Lubricate the pivot points on the
blade control handle and the brake cable at least
once a season with light oil. The blade control must
operate freely in both directions.
MAINTENANCE
Cutting Blade
WARNING: Be sure to disconnect and ground
the spark plug wire before working on the cut-
ting blade to prevent accidental engine starting.
Protect hands by using heavy gloves or a rag to
grasp the cutting blade.
•Tip mower as specified in separate engine manual. If
it is not specified tip with carburetor up.
•Remove the bolt and blade support which holds the
blade and adapter to the engine crankshaft. Remove
the blade and adapter from the crankshaft. See Figure
13.
WARNING: Periodically inspect the blade
adapter for cracks, especially if you strike a for-
eign object. Replace when necessary.
For best results your blade should be sharp. The blade
may be resharpened by removing it and either grinding
or filing the cutting edge keeping as close to the origi-
nal bevel as possible. It is extremely important that
each cutting edge receives an equal amount of grind-
ing to prevent an unbalanced blade. Improper blade
balance will result in excessive vibration causing even-
tual damage to the engine and mower. Be sure to
carefully balance blade after sharpening. The blade can
be tested for balance by balancing it on a round shaft
screwdriver. Remove metal from the heavy side until it
balances evenly.
Before reassembling the blade and the blade adapter
to the unit, lubricate the engine crankshaft and the in-
ner surface of the blade adapter with light oil. Install
the blade adapter on the crankshaft with the “star”
away from the engine. Refer to Figure 13. Place the
blade with the side marked bottom (or with part num-
ber) facing away from the adapter. Align the blade bell
support over the blade with the tabs in the holes of the
blade and insert the hex bolt. Tighten the hex bolt to
the torque listed below:

To insure safe operation of your unit, ALL nuts and bolts
must be checked periodically for correct tightness.
CAUTION: Cutting grass in sandy soil condition
causes abrasive wear to the blade.
After prolonged use, especially in sandy soil condi-
tions, the blade will become worn and lose some of
the original shape. Cutting efficiently will be reduced
and the blade should be replaced. Replace with an

approved factory replacement blade only. Possible
damage resulting from blade unbalance condition is
not the responsibility of the manufacturer.
Deck
The underside of the mower deck should be cleaned
after each use to prevent a buildup of grass clip-
pings, leaves, dirt or other matter. If this debris is
allowed to accumulate, it will invite rust and corro-
sion, and may prevent proper mulching.
The deck may be cleaned by tilting the mower and
scraping clean with a suitable tool (make certain the
spark plug wire is disconnected).
NOTE: We do not recommend the use of pres-
sure washers or garden hose to clean your unit.
These may cause damage to electric compo-
nents, spindles, pulleys, bearings, or the engine.
The use of water will result in shortened life and
reduce serviceability.
Engine
Refer to the separate engine manual for engine
maintenance instructions.
Maintain engine oil as instructed in the separate engine
manual packed with your unit. Read and follow instruc-
tions carefully.
Under normal conditions service air cleaner as in-
structed in the separate engine manual packed with
your unit. Clean every few hours under extremely dusty
conditions. Poor engine performance and flooding usu-
ally indicates that the air cleaner should be serviced.
The spark plug should be cleaned and the gap reset
once a season. Spark plug replacement is recom-
mended at the start of each mowing season; check
engine manual for correct plug type and gap specifica-
tions.
NOTE: This spark ignition system meets all require-
ments of the Canadian Interference-Causing
Equipment Regulations.
Clean the engine regularly with a cloth or brush. Keep
the cooling system (blower housing area) clean to per-
mit proper air circulation which is essential to engine
performance and life. Be certain to remove all grass, dirt
and combustible debris from muffler area.
Rear Flap Replacement
The rear flap is attached to the back of the mower deck,
and is designed to minimize the possibility that objects
will be thrown from the rear of the mower toward the
operator. If the rear flap becomes damaged, replace as
follows.
To remove the old rear flap, cut off the flat end of the
wire rod which secures it to the deck using a pair of
side-cutters. Attach the new rear flap using the new rod
provided with the rear flap, bending the ends of the rod
over to secure.
OFF SEASON STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
The following steps should be taken to prepare lawn
mower for storage.
•Clean and lubricate mower thoroughly as described
in the lubrication instructions.
•Refer to engine manual for correct engine storage in-
structions.
•Coat mower’s cutting blade with chassis grease to
prevent rusting.
•Store mower in a dry, clean area.
NOTE: When storing any type of power equip-
ment in an unventilated or metal storage shed,
care should be taken to rust-proof the equip-
ment. Using a light oil or silicone, coat the
equipment, especially cables and all moving
parts.
CAUTION: Never fold or unfold handle
without disconnecting spark plug.
NOTE: Be careful not to bend of kink cables.

The limited warranty set forth below is given by MTD LLC with respect to new merchandise purchased and used in the
United States and/or its territories and possessions, and by MTD Products Limited with respect to new merchandise
purchased and used in Canada and/or its territories and possessions (either entity respectively, “MTD”).
MTD warrants this product (excluding its normal wear parts as described below) against defects in material and work-
manship for a period of two (2) years commencing on the date of original purchase and will, at its option, repair or replace, free of charge, any part

ENTREPOSAGE HORS SAISON
Procédez de la manière suivante pour préparer votre
tondeuse pour un entreposage prolongé.
•Nettoyez et lubrifiez soigneusement la tondeuse
selon les instructions de lubrification.
•Consultez la notice d’utilisation du moteur quant aux
instructions d’entreposage du moteur.
•Enduisez la lame de la tondeuse d’une graisse à
châssis pour l’empêcher de rouiller.
•Entreposez la tondeuse dans un endroit sec et
propre.
REMARQUE: Il est très important de bien
protéger le matériel contre la rouille s’il doit être
entreposé dans un abri métallique non ventilé.
Enduisez toute la machine, en particulier les
câbles et toutes les pièces mobiles, avec une
huile légère ou de la silicone.
ATTENTION: Ne pliez ni ne dépliez jamais le
guidon sans avoir, au préalable, débranché
la bougie.
REMARQUE: Faites attention de ne pas plier ni
tortiller les câbles.

•Enlevez le boulon et le support de la lame qui
maintiennent la lame et l’adaptateur sur le
vilebrequin. Dégagez la lame et l’adaptateur du
vilebrequin. Voir la Figure 13.
AVERTISSEMENT: Examinez périodiquement
l’adaptateur de lame pour y détecter tout
fendillement éventuel, surtout après avoir
heurté un objet. Remplacez-le au besoin.
Pour obtenir les meilleurs résultats, la lame doit être
bien affûtée. Pour l’affûter à nouveau, démontez-la
puis meulez ou limez les bords tranchants en
maintenant l’angle aussi près que possible du biseau
original. Il est essentiel que chaque tranchant soit
affûté également pour ne pas avoir une lame
déséquilibrée. Une lame déséquilibrée cause des vi-
brations qui peuvent endommager le moteur et la
tondeuse. Assurez-vous de bien rééquilibrer la lame
après l’avoir affûtée. Vous pouvez vérifier l’équilibre
de la lame en la plaçant sur un tournevis à tige
ronde. Limez le métal du côté le plus lourd jusquà ce
que la lame soit parfaitement équilibrée.
Avant de remonter la lame et son adaptateur sur la
tondeuse, lubrifiez le vilebrequin et la surface
intérieure de l’adaptateur avec une huile légère.
Placez l’adaptateur de la lame sur le vilebrequin,
«l’étoile» à l’opposé du moteur. Voir la Figure 13.
Placez la lame, le côté sur lequel la mention «Bot-
tom» (ou le numéro de pièce) apparaît, à l’opposé de
l’adaptateur. Alignez le support de la lame sur
celle-ci en enfonçant les pattes dans les trous de la
lame, puis insérez le boulon hex. Serrez le boulon
hex. au couple recommandé ci-dessous.
Couple de montage de la lame
Boulon centrale 450 po-lb min., 600 po-lb max.
Vérifiez périodiquement que TOUS les écrous et
boulons de la machine sont bien serrés.
ATTENTION: Le fait de couper l’herbe sur un
sol sablonneux provoque l’usure de la lame par
abrasion.
Après un usage prolongé, particulièrement dans des
terrains sablonneux, la lame sera émoussée et perdra
son tranchant original. L’efficacité de la coupe sera
réduite et la lame devra être remplacée. Remplacez-la
toujours par une lame de rechange approuvée par
l’usine. Le fabricant n’est pas responsable des
dommages causés par une lame déséquilibrée.
Plateau de coupe
Nettoyez le dessous du plateau de coupe après
chaque utilisation pour empêcher les brins d’herbe,
les feuilles ou la saleté de s’y accumuler. Toute accu-
mulation favorise la rouille et la corrosion et peut
empêcher le déchiquetage efficace.
Inclinez la tondeuse et grattez le dessous du plateau
de coupe avec un outil approprié (après avoir vérifié
que la bougie est débranchée) pour nettoyer le pla-
teau de coupe.
REMARQUE: L'utilisation d'un nettoyeur sous
pression ou d'un boyau d'arrosage pour nettoyer
la tondeuse est déconseillée. Cela risque en effet
d'endommager les composants électriques, les
fusées, les poulies, les roulements ou le moteur
l'emploi d'eau a tendance à raccourcir la vie du
tondeuse et à limiter sa facilité d'entretien.
Moteur
Consultez la notice d’utilisation du moteur pour tout ce
qui concerne l’entretien du moteur.
Utilisez l’huile à moteur recommandée dans la notice
d’utilisation du moteur fournie avec la tondeuse. Lisez
attentivement les instructions et suivez-les.
Dans des conditions normales nettoyez le filtre à air
recommandée dans la notice d’utilisation du moteur
fournie avec la tondeuse. Nettoyez-le à intervalles
plus rapprochés dans des conditions très
poussiéreuses. Une mauvaise performance du
moteur et sa «noyade» sont des indications que le
filtre à air doit être nettoyé.
Nettoyez la bougie et ajustez l’écartement une fois par
saison. Il est recommandé de remplacer la bougie au
début de chaque saison. Vérifiez le type de bougie à
utiliser et l’écartement correct dans la notice
d’utilisation du moteur.
REMARQUE: Ce système d’allumage par
étincelle de véhicule respecte toutes les
exigences du Règlement sur le matériel
brouilleur du Canada.
Nettoyez le moteur régulièrement avec un linge ou
une brosse. Gardez le système de refroidissement (à
proximité du ventilateur) propre pour assurer la
bonne circulation d’air essentielle aux bonnes perfor-
mances et à la longévité du moteur. Enlevez tous les
brins d’herbe, la saleté et autres débris combustibles
se trouvant à proximité du silencieux.
Remplacement du déflecteur arrière
Il est installé sur l’arrière du plateau de coupe et a
pour but de minimiser les risques de projection
d’objets vers le conducteur. Remplacez le déflecteur
arrière comme suit s’il est endommagé.
Tout d’abord, retirez le déflecteur usé en coupant
l’extrémité plate de la tige métallique qui le maintient
sur le plateau de coupe. Servez-vous de cisailles.
Installez le déflecteur arrière neuf avec la nouvelle
tige fournie et pliez les extrémités pour la maintenir
en place.

•Ne coupez pas l’herbe mouillée. Pour un
déchiquetage efficace, ne coupez pas de l’herbe
mouillée car elle a tendance à coller au dessous du
plateau de coupe et à gêner le déchiquetage.
•Coupez 1/3 de la longueur de l’herbe. La coupe
recommandée pour un bon déchiquetage corre-
spond à 1/3 de la longueur de l’herbe. Ralentissez
pour assurer une bonne répartition des brins d’herbe
sur la pelouse. En cas d’herbe particulièrement drue,
il faudra peut-être avancer très lentement pour
bénéficier d’un déchiquetage satisfaisant. Si l’herbe
est trop longue, deux passages seront nécessaires.
Abaissez la lame d’un tiers de la longueur de l’herbe
au deuxième passage et coupez dans une autre di-
rection. Le fait de chevaucher les passages permet
de déchiqueter à nouveau les brins d’herbe qui
restent sur la pelouse. La tondeuse doit toujours
fonctionner à plein régime pour obtenir la meilleure
coupe et le meilleur déchiquetage.
•Nettoyez le dessous du plateau de coupe. Nettoyez
le dessous du plateau de coupe après chaque utilisa-
tion pour empêcher les brins d’herbe de s’y accumuler,
ce qui gênerait le déchiquetage.
•Déchiquetage de feuilles. Le déchiquetage des
feuilles à l’automne peut aussi être bénéfique pour
votre pelouse. Assurez-vous toutefois que les feuilles
sont sèches et qu’elles ne forment pas une couche
trop épaisse sur la pelouse. N’attendez pas que toutes
les feuilles soient tombées pour les déchiqueter.
•Méthode de tonte. Il est recommandé de garder le
trottoir ou l’allée sur la droite de la tondeuse. Continuez
de cette façon pour que l’herbe à tondre se trouve
sur la gauche de la tondeuse. Assurez-vous que les
lames de la tondeuse sont toujours sur l’herbe pour
éviter de faire trop de saletés.
AVERTISSEMENT: Arrêtez le moteur si vous
heurtez un objet quelconque. Débranchez le fil
de la bougie, cherchez soigneusement tout
signe de dégât à la tondeuse et réparez-la
avant de la remettre en marche et de vous en
servir. Des vibrations importantes de la
tondeuse indiquent des dégâts. Faites exam-
iner et réparer la machine rapidement.
RÉGLAGES
ATTENTION: N’EFFECTUEZ JAMAIS DE
RÉGLAGE SUR LA TONDEUSE SANS AVOIR
AUPARAVANT ARRÊTÉ LE MOTEUR ET
DÉBRANCHÉ LE FIL DE LA BOUGIE.
ATTENTION: Avant de changer la hauteur de la
tondeuse, arrêtez-la et débranchez le fil de la
bougie.
Réglage de hauteur:
(Voir la Figure 12).
•Arrêtez la tondeuse et débranchez le fil de la bougie
avant de changer la hauteur de coupe de la tondeuse.
•Le levier de réglage des
roues de votre tondeuse
vous permet un choix de
neuf (9) hauteurs de coupe.
La coupe moyenne convient
pour la plupart des
tondeuses.
•Pour changer la hauteur de
coupe, poussez le levier de
réglage des roues vers la
roue et déplacez-le vers le
haut ou le bas à la hauteur
choisie.
REMARQUE: Toutes les roues doivent être à la
même hauteur.
•Pour couper de l’herbe humide ou épaisse, réglez
l’arrière de la tondeuse plus haut que l’avant pour
permettre une meilleure éjection de l’herbe.
Réglages du carburateur
Certains ajustements mineurs seront peut-être
nécessaires pour compenser les différences de carbu-
rant, de température, d’altitude et de charge. Consultez
la notice d’utilisation du moteur fournie avec la tondeuse
quant aux réglages du carburateur.
LUBRIFICATION
ATTENTION: DÉBRANCHEZ TOUJOURS LE
FIL DE LA BOUGIE AVANT DE FAIRE
L’ENTRETIEN.
ROUES - Lubrifiez les roulements à billes des roues
au moins une fois par saison avec de l’huile légère,
tous les autres genres n'ont pas be soin d'être
lubrifiées. Toutefois, si elles doivent être démontées
pour une raison quelconque, lubrifiez la surface du
boulon d’essieu et la surface intérieure de la roue
avec une huile automobile légère.
MOTEUR - Consultez la notice d'utilisation du moteur
pour les instructions de lubrification.
COMMANDE DE LA LAME - Lubrifiez les points de
pivot de la poignée de commande de la lame et le
câble de frein au moins une fois par saison avec une
huile légère. La commande de la lame doit
fonctionner facilement dans les deux sens.
ENTRETIEN
Lame de coupe
AVERTISSEMENT: Pour éviter tout
démarrage accidentel, mettez toujours le fil
de la bougie à la terre avant de manipuler la
lame. Portez toujours des gants épais ou
utilisez un chiffon pour manipuler la lame.
•Basculez la tondeuse selon les instructions dans la
notice d’utilisation. S’il n’y a pas d’instructions
spécifiques, basculez la tondeuse avec le
carburateur sur le haut.

•Glissez les deux crochets du déflecteur d’éjection
latérale sous la goupille de la charnière du plaque
de déchiquetage à charnière.
•Rabaissez le plaque de déchiquetage à charnière.
REMARQUE: Ne retirez jamais le bouchon de
déchiquetage à charnière, même quand vous ne
déchiquetez pas.
AVERTISSEMENT: Toutes les tondeuses sont
équipées d’un dispositif de protection à
l’arrière. Il empêche les projectiles soulevés
par la lame de blesser l’utilisateur de la
tondeuse. NE DÉMONTEZ PAS CE
DISPOSITIF DE SÉCURITÉ.
UTILISATION
Avant de faire démarrer le moteur
Faites les pleins d’essence et d’huile selon les in-
structions fournies dans la notice d’utilisation du
moteur qui accompagne la tondeuse. Veuillez lire les
instructions attentivement.
AVERTISSEMENT: Ne faites jamais le plein à
l’intérieur, pendant que le moteur tourne ou
avant que le moteur n’ait refroidi pendant au
moins deux minutes.
Mise en marche du moteur
•Branchez le fil de la bougie sur cette dernière. Si
une gaine en caoutchouc recouvre l’extrémité du fil
de la bougie, assurez-vous que la boucle métallique,
au bout du fil de la bougie (dans la gaine en caou-
tchouc), est bien fixée sur l’embout métallique de la
bougie. Voir la Figure 10.
•Si votre tondeuse est équipée d’un amorceur,
amorcez le moteur en suivant les instructions de la
notice d’utilisation du moteur.
•Tenez-vous derrière la machine, appuyez sur la
poignée de commande de la lame et maintenez-la
contre le guidon supérieur, comme à la Figure 11.
•Prenez la poignée du démarreur de la façon illustrée
et tirez-la lentement jusqu’à ce que vous sentiez une
légère résistance. Tirez alors rapidement pour faire
démarrer le moteur et pour éviter le recul. Laissez la
poignée revenir lentement jusqu’au guidage de la
corde. Voir la Figure 12.
Il suffit d’appuyer sur ce poignée pour faire
fonctionner la machine. Le fait de lâcher la poignée
de commande de la lame arrête le moteur et la lame.
AVERTISSEMENT: CE MÉCANISME DE
COMMANDE EST UN DISPOSITIF DE
SÉCURITÉ. N’ESSAYEZ JAMAIS D’ÉVITER
SON EMPLOI.
Arrêt des moteur:
•Lâchez la poignée de commande de la lame pour
arrêter le moteur et la lame.
AVERTISSEMENT: La lame continue à
tourner pendant quelques secondes après
que le moteur s’est éteint.
•Débranchez le fil de la bougie et mettez le à la
masse contre le moteur en suivant les instructions
de la notice d'utilisation pour empêcher tout
démarrage accidentel lorsque la machine n’est pas
surveillée.
Utilisation de l’accessoire de déchiquetage (en option)
Les tondeuses déchiqueteuses sont équipées d’une
lame spéciale qui pulvérisent l’herbe en particules mi-
nuscules et les projettent dans la pelouse. Ces petits
brins d’herbe se décomposent rapidement en un
engrais naturel qui redonne à la terre les éléments
nutritifs dont elle a besoin. Le déchiquetage continu de
l’herbe équivant donc à une application continue d’un
engrais naturel, sans le problème de se débarrasser de
l’herbe coupée avec, en fin de compte, une pelouse
beaucoup plus saine et plus verte.
AVERTISSEMENT: Cette tondeuse est
conçue pour l’entretien normal de pelouses
résidentielles dont la hauteur de l’herbe ne
dépasse pas 10 po. N’essayez pas de tondre
de l’herbe plus haute et sèche (comme dans
des champs) ou des tas de feuilles mortes.
Les débris risquent de s’accumuler sous le
plateau de coupe ou sur le système
d’échappement du moteur, ce qui pourrait
provoquer un incendie.
Pour obtenir les meilleurs résultats en déchiquetant
l’herbe, suivez les conseils ci-dessous:
•Nettoyez la pelouse. Vérifiez qu’il n’y a plus de
pierres, de morceaux de bois, de fils métalliques ou
autres objets sur la pelouse, qui risquent
d’endommager la tondeuse. Ces objets pourraient
être projetés par la tondeuse dans une direction ou
une autre et blesser grièvement le conducteur ou
