VIDEO CARD LEVEL SETTINGS & WISI MODULATOR ADJUSTMENTS
In some circumstances, the use of WISI OV36 RF Modulators with some MultiScreen Channel
Production Units results in a distorted picture on some TV sets, when showing some pictures
with bright backgrounds. This may be alleviated by adjustments to the Brightness and Contrast
settings of the video card in the Production Unit, and by adjusting the Video Gain of the
modulator.
IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM
The MultiScreen Channel system displays a continuous loop of individual “screens”, which may
contain a graphic or plain background, static and scrolling text. The problem tends to appear
when displaying bright pictures, especially with large amounts of white background. Symptoms
may include tearing or rolling pictures, horizontal streaking, and audible buzzing.
Different TVs will react to different degrees. It may be useful to find a TV which is readily
accessible and which is more strongly affected by the problem. It would also be useful to
identify screens in the display sequence which are more severely affected. A method of
displaying an individual screen is described later.
The relevant WISI modulator should also be located. WISI OV36 modulators (and the
equivalent OV35 mono version) are mounted in an OV50 Topline Headend frame. This is about
440mm (W) x 400mm (H) x 210mm (D), and may be located in a Communications cupboard or
plant room. Other WISI models and other brands of modulators may also be affected, although
these notes do not cover adjustment methods. If there are a number of modulators in the rack, it
will be necessary to determine which one is handling the MultiScreen Channel. This could be
done by tuning a nearby TV to the MultiScreen Channel signal, then temporarily disconnecting
the video input signal from each modulator in turn, until the MultiScreen Channel picture is lost.
The video input connector is the front BNC connector on the top of the modulator. Note that it
may take a while for the picture to stabilise after reconnecting the video signal if the modulator’s
Video Gain is set to Auto.
In the following notes, those familiar with the operation of the MultiScreen Channel system may
be able to follow the steps by the brief initial description. The additional text [in square brackets]
provides further detail for those unfamiliar with the procedures. Keyboard keys and modulator
button names are shown in bold italic Roman, on-screen buttons or menu selections etc. appear
in Arial, screen titles are in Century, and socket names are in Gill Sans.
ADJUSTING BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST
1. Access the Sequence Editor. [With the system running normally, either click the left and
right mouse buttons simultaneously, or else press the Esc and Pause/Break keys
simultaneously. This should break out of the display mode into the Sequence Editor.]

2. Access the Windows Desktop. [From the Sequence Editor, or the Configuration
screen, press and hold down the Control, Alt and Shift keys, tap the Xkey, and release
all keys. A Shut Down menu should appear, with 3 buttons. Either click on the Desktop
button, or simply press Enter. The MultiScreen software should shut down, and the
Windows Desktop, with several icons on a green background, should appear.]
3. Access the nVidia Control Panel. [Right click on a blank area of the desktop. A menu
should appear with NVIDIA Display about half way down. Point to this item to highlight it,
and another option should appear at the side. This may be “TV”, “Analog Display”, or
the identity of the Operating Monitor. Point to this item, and left click on it. If the nVidia
Control Panel is already in the new format, not the Classic format, then the main menu
item will read “NVIDIA Control Panel”, and the secondary menu won’t appear. Click on
the NVIDIA Control Panel entry, and skip the next step.]
4. Select the New NVIDIA Control Panel format. [Click on Control Panel User Interface
at the bottom of the left hand menu, then on the New NVIDIA Control Panel button, OK,
and Right Now. After a few seconds, the new format NVIDIA Control Panel should
appear. If the new format Control Panel is not available, refer to the Classic Mode
instructions below.]
5. Select the Video and Television category.
6. Select Adjust Television color settings (under the Television heading).
7. Adjust the Brightness and Contrast settings. If necessary, drag the horizontal slider bar
below the adjustment sliders to reveal the values at the right of the sliders. (Brightness
and Contrast should both be at 100% initially). Drag the Brightness and Contrast
sliders to the left to a setting of + 90%. Click the Apply button to apply the new settings.
8. Minimise the NVIDIA Control Panel. [Click on the _ button at the top right corner of the
Control Panel window.
9. Restart the MultiScreen Channel programme. [Double click on the MultiScreen Channel
icon to restart in Display mode, or MS Channel Seq Editor to return to the Sequence
Editor.]
ADJUSTING THE MODULATOR VIDEO GAIN
The WISI OV series modules each have a small LCD display and a set of four buttons for
making adjustments, via a simple menu system. Normally, the display shows the model number
(e.g. OV35A) and output frequency in MegaHertz (e.g. 506.25).
Locate the appropriate WISI modulator. Press any button to turn on the backlight, and display
the first four menu items, with a flashing block cursor on the top item. Press the DOWN button 4
times, until the cursor is on V-Gain. Press the RIGHT button to access the adjustment menu.
This should read V-Gain and Auto. Press the UP button 5 or 6 times, to set the gain to standard
(5) or slightly reduced (6). (A higher gain number denotes a lower video gain, to suit a higher
video signal level). After about 30 seconds, the display reverts to its normal model and
frequency display, and the backlight turns off. NOTE: Be careful not to change any settings
other than Video Gain.
Note that, if setting the V-Gain back to Auto for any reason, the picture may be unstable until a
suitable (usually dark) image is displayed.

DISPLAYING AN INDIVIDUAL SCREEN
It may be useful to display a single problem screen indefinitely, to assist in checking settings.
The video signal from the MultiScreen Channel unit will have to be moved from the A/V OUT
MAIN Video output (yellow socket) to the corresponding A/V OUT MONITOR video output. The
MAIN outputs are switched to an independently generated “Updating System, Please Wait”
message when not in normal Display mode. The MONITOR output should be the same as the
picture on the Operator’s VGA monitor, but in composite video format.
To display an individual screen from an existing sequence, first access the Sequence Editor
(see Step 1 above). The Sequence Editor screen shows up to 24 thumbnail pictures of screens
from the selected sequence. The right hand scroll bar can be used to reveal additional
thumbnails, while a different sequence can be selected via the arrow just to the left of the
Preview button. To view an individual screen in a sequence, point to the individual thumbnail
and double click on it. This opens the Screen Editor. Click on the Preview button to view the
full screen image. To end the preview, press Esc, Enter or the Space bar, or click either mouse
button. Click on Cancel to return to the Sequence Editor. Note that screens with a chain or
DVD symbol are special screen types, and cannot be previewed in this manner.
An alternative method is to view an image in the Graphics Library. From the Sequence Editor,
click on the Config button to access the Configuration menu. Next, click on the Graphics
Manager button. Thumbnails of the first 24 graphics in the selected category will appear. A
suitable graphic for testing may be found in the MultiScreen category. [Click on the down arrow
to the right of the current category name, then drag the scroll bar on the right hand side of the
list box to reveal the desired category, then click on that category.] Point to a suitably bright
screen, for example one of the widescreen TV images with a minimal amount of writing on the
screen area, then right click to display the full screen image. Another good test image is the
third Balloons picture in the Occasions category. To finish viewing the image, press Esc, Enter
or Space, or click either mouse button. To return to the Sequence Editor, click on Exit, and Exit
again.
The selected sequence (in the Sequence Editor) may be run from any screen in that sequence
by first selecting it [point to the thumbnail, left click to select it, indicated by a red border around
that thumbnail], then clicking the Preview button. To finish previewing, press Esc, Enter, Space
or a mouse button.
FINE TUNING AND RETURNING TO NORMAL OPERATION
To run the normal display sequence, click on the Display button in the Sequence Editor.
Check for absence of interference on TVs, especially on bright images.
If problems persist, try reducing the Contrast and/or Brightness settings down a bit further, or try
different Video Gain settings. If the NVIDIA Control Panel screen was previously minimised, it
can be restored by clicking on the NVIDIA Control Panel item on the toolbar, which will appear
by moving the cursor towards the bottom of the Windows Desktop screen.
