OWNER/OPERATOR INSTRUCTIONS ON THE SAFE OPERATION
OF THE MUSTANG SKID-STEER LOADER. IF YOU HAVE ANY
QUESTIONS SEE YOUR AUTHORIZED MUSTANG DEALER.
Serial Number Locations
Always use the serial number of the Mustang Loader when requesting service
information or when ordering parts. Early or later models (identification made by
serial number) may use different parts, or it may be necessary to use a different
procedure in doing specific service operation.
The Mustang Loader serial number plate is
located on the inside of the right upright,
above the engine cover (Figure 1).
The engine serial number is located as
shown below (Figure 2). On top of the
engine by the oil cap.
The attachments and equipment available
for use with this machine have a wide
variety of potential applications. Read the
manual provided with the attachment to
learn how to safely maintain and operate
the equipment. Be sure the machine is
suitably equipped for the type of work to
be performed.
Do not use this machine for any applica-
tions or purposes other than those
described in this manual or applicable for
approved attachments. If the machine is
to be used with special attachments or
equipment other than those approved by
Mustang Manufacturing, consult your
Mustang dealer. Any person using non-
approved attachments or making unautho-
rized modifications is responsible for the
consequences.
Different applications may require
optional safety equipment, such as a
back-up alarm, horn, mirror, strobe light or an impact-resistant front door. Be
sure you know the job site hazards and equip your machine as needed.

CHAPTER 2
SAFETY
Safety is the Operator’s Responsibility
Never attempt to by-pass the keyswitch to start the engine. Use only the jump
starting procedure detailed in the Operating Instruction section of this manual.
Before operating this machine, read and study the following safety information.
In addition, be sure that everyone who operates or works with this machine,
whether family member or employee, is familiar with these safety precautions. It
is essential to have competent and careful operators, who are not physically or
mentally impaired, and who are thoroughly trained in the safe operation of the
machine and handling of loads. It is recommended that the operator be capable of
obtaining a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
The use of skid-steer loaders is subject to certain hazards that cannot be elimi-
nated by mechanical means, but only by exercising intelligence, care and
common sense. Such hazards include, but are not limited to, hillside operation,
overloading, instability of the load, poor maintenance and using the equipment
for a purpose for which it is not intended or designed.
The Mustang Skid-Steer Loader is a highly maneuverable and compact machine. It
is rugged and useful under a variety of conditions. Because of this, the operator
may be faced with hazards associated with off-highway, rough terrain applications.
The Mustang Loader is operated by an internal combustion engine, which
exhausts gases and heat. All exhaust gases can kill or cause illness, so adequate
ventilation should be used. Heat can cause burns or other associated injuries. The
Mustang Loader is equipped with a spark arrestor muffler to allow operation in
certain areas.
Ask an authorized Mustang dealer to demonstrate the safe use of the Mustang
Loader and associated attachments. Read and follow the instructions indicated in
this Operator’s Manual and the AEM Safety Manual that is included with the
Mustang Loader.
The operator must ensure that loads can be handled in a safe manner over the ter-
rain in which the machine must operate. Safe loads of materials of specified den-
sities for the Mustang Loader/attachment combination can be obtained from
Mustang literature or from an authorized Mustang dealer.
Failure to follow the safety instructions could lead to severe injury or death to the
operator or bystander, or at the very least, damage to property. If the operator is
unsure about proper procedures to follow, contact an authorized Mustang dealer
or Mustang Manufacturing Company, Inc. for clarification or demonstration.
The Operator’s Manual and the AEM Safety Manual are delivered with the Mus-
tang Loader and must stay with it when it is sold or transferred. Replacement
manuals can be ordered from your authorized Mustang dealer.

6917099/GP0310
The Mustang Loader has machine signs (decals) that give instructions for safe
operation and care. The signs (decals) and their locations are shown in this
manual on pages 12-17. Replacement signs (decals) for safe operation are avail-
able at no charge from your local authorized Mustang dealer.
A Service Manual is available from your authorized Mustang dealer for use by
qualified mechanics to complete shop-type service and repair work.
Safety is the ultimate responsibility of the operator. The operator must be trained
properly to move, turn, stop, and undertake other jobs the machine is capable of
performing. Failure to comply with safety and operating instructions can lead to
serious injuries or even death.
Before Operating the Loader
“DANGER” indicates an imminently hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, will result in
death or serious injury.
“WARNING” indicates a potentially hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, could result in
death or serious injury.
“CAUTION” indicates a potentially hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, may result in
minor or moderate injury. May also alert against unsafe practices.
Safety Alert Symbol: This safety symbol is used for important safety
messages. When you see this symbol, follow the safety message to avoid
personal injury or death.
Operator must read instructions before oper-
ating this machine. Untrained operators may
cause injury or death.
Warnings on the machine and in the manuals
are for your safety. Failure to obey warnings
can cause injury or death.
This notice identifies procedures that must be
followed to avoid damage to the machine.
The Mustang Skid-Steer Loader must be in good operating condition before use.
Check all items at the intervals specified on the Maintenance Chart on page 81.

Safe Operation Needs a Qualified Operator
A qualified operator must do the following:
• UNDERSTAND THE WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS, RULES AND REGU-
LATIONS
• The written instructions from Mustang Manufacturing Company, Inc.
include the Operator’s Manual, the AEM Safety Manual and machine
signs (decals).
• Check and know the rules and regulations of your work area. The rules may
include an employee’s work safety requirements. Requirements may need
identification of hazards such as underground utility supply lines, etc.
• CONDUCT TRAINING WITH THE ACTUAL OPERATION OF THE
MUSTANG LOADER
• Operator training must consist of a demonstration and verbal instructions.
This training is given by your authorized Mustang dealer before the Mus-
tang Loader is delivered.
• New operators must start in an area without bystanders and use all con-
trols until they can operate the Mustang Loader safely under all condi-
tions. Always fasten seat belt and lower Seat Bar if equipped before
operating, always shut off engine and leave attachment flat on the ground
before exiting the operator’s area.
• Walk around the machine and warn all nearby personnel before starting
the machine.
• Always keep hands and feet inside the operator’s compartment while
operating the machine.
• Do not raise or drop a loaded bucket or fork suddenly. Abrupt movements
under load can cause serious instability.
• Never push the lift control into the “float” position with the bucket or
attachment loaded or raised, because this will cause the lift arm to lower
rapidly.
• Do not drive too close to an excavation or ditch; be sure that the surround-
ing ground has adequate strength to support the weight of the loader and the
load.
• Never carry riders. Do not allow others to ride on the machine or attach-
ments, because they could fall or cause an accident.
• Always look to the rear before backing up the skid-steer loader.
• Operate the controls only from the operator’s seat.
• Always wear safety glasses with side shields when striking metal against
metal. In addition, it is recommended that a softer (chip resistant) material
be used to cushion the blow. Failure to heed could lead to serious injury to
the eyes or other parts of the body.
• To insure safe operation, replace damaged or worn-out parts with genuine
Mustang service parts.

917099/GP0310 9
• Mustang skid-steer loaders are designed and intended to be used only with
Mustang attachments or approved referral attachments. Mustang cannot
be responsible for operator safety if the loader is used with a non-
approved attachment.
• Always face the loader and use the hand holds and steps when getting on
and off the loader. Do not jump off the loader.
• KNOW THE WORK CONDITIONS
• For each material to be handled, the operator must know how to avoid
exceeding the Rated Operating Load (SAE) of the Mustang Loader. For
example, in handling certain loose material with a given bucket, operators
must know if they can safely take a full load, or only part of a bucket load.
• The operator must know any prohibited uses or work areas, for example,
excessive slopes, explosive environments, etc.
• Wear tight fitting clothing. Always wear safety glasses when maintaining
or servicing a Mustang Loader. Safety glasses, hearing protection or other
special equipment may be required for some work. See your authorized
Mustang dealer about optional Mustang safety equipment.
• A qualified operator must not use drugs or alcoholic drinks that will cause
impaired alertness or coordination while working. An operator taking pre-
scription drugs must seek medical advice to determine if the operator can
safely run the machine.
• Machine stability is affected by: the load being carried, the height of the
load, machine speed, abrupt control movements and driving over uneven
terrain. DISREGARDING ANY OF THESE FACTORS CAN CAUSE
THE LOADER TO TIP, THROWING THE OPERATOR OUT OF THE
SEAT OR LOADER, RESULTING IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY.
Therefore, ALWAYS operate with the seat belt fastened and the restraint
bar lowered. Do not exceed the machine’s Rated Operating Load. Carry
the load low. Move the controls smoothly and gradually, and operate at
speeds appropriate for the conditions.
Fire Prevention
The Mustang Skid-Steer Loader has several components that are at high tempera-
ture under normal operating conditions. The primary source of heat is the engine
and its exhaust system. The electrical system, if damaged or incorrectly main-
tained, can be a source of arcs or sparks.
Flammable debris (leaves, straw, etc.) must be removed regularly. If flammable
debris is allowed to accumulate, it will increase the fire risk. The Mustang
Loader must be cleaned as often as necessary to avoid this accumulation. Flam-
mable debris in the engine compartment is a fire hazard when the loader is
parked with a hot engine.
The spark arrestor muffler is designed to control the emission of hot particles
from the engine and exhaust system, but the muffler and the exhaust gases are
still hot.

10 917099/GP0310
• Know where fire extinguishers and first aid kits are located and how to use
them.
• Do not use the Mustang Loader where exhaust, arcs, sparks or hot compo-
nents can contact flammable material, or explosive dust or gases.
• The engine compartment and engine cooling system must be inspected every
day and cleaned if necessary to prevent fires and overheating.
• Check all electrical wiring and connections for damage. Keep the battery ter-
minals clean and tight. Repair or replace any damaged parts.
• Check fuel and hydraulic tubes, hoses, and fittings for damage and leakage.
Never use open flame or bare skin to check for leaks. Instead use a piece of
paper or cardboard. Escaping fluid under pressure can be invisible and can
penetrate the skin and cause serious injury. If any fluid is injected into your
skin see a doctor at once. Injected fluid must be surgically removed or gan-
grene may result.
• Tighten or replace any parts that show leakage. Always clean fluid spills. Do
not use gasoline or diesel fuel for cleaning parts. Use commercial nonflam-
mable solvents.
• Do not use ether or starting fluids on the engine. These starting aids can
cause explosion and injure you or bystanders.
• Always clean the Mustang Loader and disconnect the battery before doing
any welding. Cover rubber hoses, battery and all other flammable parts.
Keep a fire extinguisher near the loader when welding. Have good ventila-
tion when grinding or welding painted parts. Wear dust mask when grinding
painted parts. Toxic dust or gas can be produced.
• Stop the engine and let it cool before adding fuel. No smoking!
• Use the procedure in the Operation section (page 39) for connecting battery
jumper cables.
• Use the procedure in the Maintenance section (page 81) for cleaning the
spark arrestor muffler.

917099/GP0310 11
Safety Decals
The skid-steer loader has decals that provide safety information and precautions
around the loader. These decals must be kept legible. If missing or illegible, they
must be replaced promptly. Replacements may be obtained from your Mustang
dealer. New equipment must have all decals specified by the manufacturer
affixed in their proper place.
Note: Contact your dealer for information concerning the availability of warning
decals in other languages.
New Decal Application
Surfaces must be free of dirt, dust, grease and foreign material before applying
the decal. Remove the smaller portion of the decal backing paper and apply the
exposed adhesive to the clean surface, maintaining proper position and align-
ment. Peel the rest of the backing paper and apply hand pressure to smooth out
the decal surface. Refer to the following pages for proper decal location.
