Mustang NASM12B-R User manual

V1

This user manual is based on the quick install guide that comes with your NAS.
Configure your NAS according to the quick install guide, before you start with the extended
configuration.
To keep the initial setup simple, all additional network and hosting services are activated by
default and ready to use. Manual configuration is not mandatory. However you can reduce
power consumption and processor load by disabling unused services.
On the following pages of this manual you will find information and configuration details for
all additional features of your NAS. Due to new firmware releases for your NAS there may be
slight changes to feature names or their descriptions. If you have any questions regarding
the configuration of your NAS, please contact us at support@mustang-electronics.de
NOTE: Deactivate all popup blockers when configuring your NAS. Only the “admin”account
has access to the configuration web interface. All other users will be forwarded to a site with
reduced functionality. Users can only change their password and start the Ajaxplorer
(if active).

Main menu
After successfully logging in, you will be redirected to the main menu of your NAS. The main
menu gives you access to all functions and features.
1. Quick start
Das Quick start menu combines the two most important categories:
1.1 Disks & volumes
This menu allows you to configure the inserted hard disk drives or solid state drives and add
combine them to create different volume types. All hard disks will be formatted during this
operation. All data will be erased. You can choose from several different volume types:
Single Disk Volume:
The selected drive(s) will be initialized as indepentant single volume(s).
Linear Volume:
The selected drive(s) will be added to a linear volume (mind. 2 drives).
RAID 0 (striping): The selected drive(s) will be added to a stripe RAID array, which will
improve disk performance. The downside of RAID 0 is that in case of a defective drive, ALL
data will be lost (at least 2 drives requires).
RAID 1 (mirroring): A RAID 1 array stores you data on both disks. In case of a defective hard
drive, your data is still available on the second drive. The capacity of one hard drive will be
unusable (2 or 4 drives required).
RAID 5: When using this array type, your data will be distributed through all selected drives.
You can automatically restore your data in case of a defective drive. About 33% of all drives
capacity will be consumed by parity data and will not be usable. (at least 3 drives required).
NOTE: RAID 1 and RAID 4 arrays protect your data against one defective hard disk drive,
only. Faulty drives should be replaced immediately. RAID does not protect your data against
computer viruses or accidently deleting files. Always store your important data on a second
device, for example your PC.
NOTE: All settings cannot be changed, unless at least one volume is set up properly. Always
start with setting up your hard disk drives.
1.2 Network
This menu shows your current TCP/IP network settings and allows you to change them. Your
NAS is preconfigured for automatic network configuration with a DHCP server. In this mode,
your NAS will obtain all required settings automatically, usually from your router Advanced
users can change these settings as required. WARNING: Wrong network settings can render
your NAS unreachable. In this case, use the reset button at the back of your NAS to load
factory default settings.

2. System administration
2.1 Basic
2.1.1 System
Here you can change the name of your NAS and the network port for the web interface. Do
not use spaces or special characters. Port 80 is the standard port for HTTP protocol. Change
the port only if necessary.
If you assign a name to your NAS, you can connect using \\NAME or http://NAME respectively
instead of the IP address. If you change the HTTP port, you have to add the new port to
connect (http://NAME:Port).
2.1.2 Date & Time
This menu allows you to control time and date settings. By default your NAS will synchronize
with an internet time server. If there is no internet connection available, you should change
time and date manually.
2.1.3 Language
Select a language from the dropdown menu and click apply. New languages may be added
in future firmware releases.
2.2 Network
See 1.2
2.3 Firmware upgrade
This menu allows you to install a new firmware version on your NAS. Only use firmware
upgrades directly from Mustang. Other software, that is not certified by Mustang may lead to
loss of data, damage your NAS and may void your warranty. Firmware updates are available
at www.mustang-electronics.de or may be downloaded automatically.
2.4 System config file
Here you can export and import the configuration of your NAS. Saving and re-installing
your configuration is recommended if you want to re-initialize your NAS, like when you
want to change RAID level. After upgrading your firmware you should backup your system
configuration. Don’t import config files from older firmware versions. Manipulating the
config file may lead to loss of data, damage your NAS and may void your warranty.

3. Disk and RAID management
3.1 Disks and volumes
see 1.1
Shows information about your installed hard disk drives.
3.3 S.M.A.R.T.
S.M.A.R.T. is short for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology helps you monitor
the health and status of your drives. The S.M.A.R.T. values are read from the drives directly
and are not linked to your NAS. For detailed information on S.M.A.R.T. values please contact
the vendor or manufacturer of your hard disk drive.
4. Access / rights management
NOTE: It is recommended to create user accounts first, then, if desired, proceed with group
setup and create shared folders at the end.
4.1 Users
In this section, you can add or change user accounts. When adding a new user, you can
decide if you want to create a home directory for this user. That folder will be available only
to that user. We suggest using self-explanatory and easy memorable user names.
4.2 Groups
This section allows you to merge users in groups. This will simplify access rights management
when you have many user accounts installed. You don’t have to create groups. Access
rights management is available on user level, too. When dealing with a low amount of user
accounts or if it is not possible to merge user accounts to logical groups, we recommend
skipping group management. We suggest using self-explanatory and easy memorable group
names. It is not possible to add users to the “adm”default group.
4.3 Shared folders
This menu gives to access to shard folder creation and rights management. If you decided to
use user groups, it’s recommend to assign rights to groups and use single user permissions
only when necessary. If you do not use user groups, assign the permissions directly to the
user accounts.
5. Network services
Activate or deactivate the integrated network services such as FTP, SSH or NFS. By default, all
network services are enabled and work on the standard port for corresponding protocol.
FTP (Port 21):
The File Transfer Protocol is supported in standard mode without encryption. All users,
except the admin user, have access to their home directory only. Users without an assigned
home directory cannot connect to the FTP server.
5

SSH (Port 22):
The Secure Shell service accepts incoming SSH and SFTP (Secure FTP) connections. Only the
admin account can connect to the secure shell server.
NFS:
NFS is for Network File System, which is primarily used for Linux connections. If you use this
NAS in a Windows environment, you may want to disable the NFS service.
The SMB service, which is the default service for folder sharing, is active by default and
cannot be deactivated.
6. Workgroups / Domains
This section allows you to add your NAS to a workgroup or a Windows domain. Your NAS
is preconfigured for usage in a workgroup environment. You may change the name of the
workgroup, but you should avoid using space- and special characters in your work group
name and you should not use more than 15 characters. When adding your NAS to a Windows
Domain, please contact your network administrator for support.
7. BitTorrent
Your NAS has a built-in Download Client for the BitTorrent Peer- to-Peer (P2P) network.
This menu gives you access to the download folder settings and allows you to activate
/ deactivate this function. You can also change the network port for the BitTorrent web
interface. If you want all users of your NAS to have access to the download folder, you should
set it to .../public.
To open the BitTorrent web interface, click the go to transmission interface button or enter
the address into your web browser. By default, the transmission interface is running at
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:9091 e.g. http://Name:9091 where xxx e.g. Name must be replaces with
the IP address or the network name of your NAS. Information on hwo to use the BitTorrent
client is available on our website.
8. Ajaxplorer
Ajaxplorer is a web based file explorer, which gives you access to your NAS using
smartphones and/or tablet PCs. The Ajaxplorer app for your devices should be available
in the corresponding app store for your devices. Ajexplorer works on port 8090 and be
accessed with any web browser in case there is no app available for your device. You have
to enter http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8090 e.g. http://Name:8090 into the address bar of your web
browser, where xxx e.g. Name must be replaced with the IP address or the network name of
your NAS.
9. DNLA media server
The DLNA media server installed on your NAS gives you access to your videos, music and
pictures directly from your flat screen TV or other modern multimedia devices.
6

The name of the DNLA server consists of the network name of your NAS and the appendix
“DLNA sever”. You can change the name of your DNLA server, but changing the network
name of your NAS will reset the DLNA server name.
You can change the multimedia folder to any folder on your NAS. Please note that some
DLNA clients cannot access password protected folders. In that case you should set your
media folder to .../public.
10. iTunes media server
The integrated iTunes media server allows you to host your iTunes library for all network
clients instead of having a copy on every device. The iTunes server will make all music files
inside the selected folder to all iTunes clients in your network.
11. External devices
Using the USB connectors on the back of your NAS you can connect USB storage devices or
USB printers and make them available for all network clients.
11.1 external storage devices
If you connect a USB mass storage device like a USB HDD or a USB flash drive your NAS will
automatically create a public shared folder. If your USB drive is not recognized, click the
Refresh button. Your NAS has a built-in backup function that allows you to copy all data from
the USB drive to your NAS. To do so, select the destination path from the dropdown menu
and click the Backup button. The NAS will create a new folder at the target location and copy
all data into that folder.
11.2 USB printer
You can connect a USB printer directly to your NAS and share it in your network, so all
users can use this printer. Please note that not all printer models are supported. Additional
functions like scanning or faxing are not available over the network.
Before you start with the network setup of your printer, please make sure you have the latest
drivers you your printer at hand.
