2.2 ZONEHEATINGANDHOWTOMAKEITWORKFORYOU
YournewEcoMaxxinbuiltwoodheater,whichmeansitisintendedtoheattheareaitisinstalled
in,aswellasspacesthatconnecttothatarea,althoughtoalowertemperature.Thisiscalledzone
heatinganditisanincreasinglypopularwaytoheathomesorspaceswithinhomes.
Zoneheatingcanbeusedtosupplementanotherheatingsystembyheatingaparticularspace
withinahome,suchasabasementfamilyroomoranadditionthatlacksanotherheatsource.
Housesofmoderatesizeandrelativelynewconstructioncanbeheatedwithaproperlysizedand
locatedwoodinbuilt.Wholehousezoneheatingworksbestwhentheinbuiltislocatedinthepart
ofthehousewherethefamilyspendsmostofitstime.Thisisnormallythemainlivingareawhere
thekitchen,diningandlivingroomsarelocated.Bylocatingtheinbuiltinthisarea,youwillgetthe
maximumbenefitoftheheatitproducesandwillachievethehighestpossibleheatingefficiency
andcomfort.Thespacewhereyouspendmostofyourtimewillbewarmest,whilebedroomsand
basement(ifthereisone)willstaycooler.Inthisway,youwillburnlesswoodthanwithother
formsofheating.
Althoughthewoodinbuiltmaybeabletoheatthemainlivingareasofyourhousetoanadequate
temperature,westronglyrecommendthatyoualsohaveaconventionaloil,gasorelectricheating
systemtoprovidebackupheating.
Yoursuccesswithzoneheatingwilldependonseveralfactors,includingthecorrectsizingand
locationofthewoodinbuilt,thesize,layoutandageofyourhomeandyourclimatezone.
2.3 THEBENEFITSOFLOWEMISSIONSANDHIGHEFFICIENCY
ThelowsmokeemissionsproducedbythespecialfeaturesinsidetheEcoMaxxfireboxmeanthat
yourhouseholdwillreleaseupto90percentlesssmokeintotheoutsideenvironmentthanifyou
usedanolderconventionalwoodinbuilt.Butthereismoretotheemissioncontroltechnologies
thanprotectingtheenvironment.
Thesmokereleasedfromwoodwhenitisheatedcontainsabouthalfoftheenergycontentofthe
fuel.Byburningthewoodcompletely,yourwoodinbuiltreleasesalltheheatenergyfromthe
woodinsteadofwastingitassmokeupthefluesystem.Also,thefeaturesinsidethefireboxallow
youtoreducetheairsupplytocontrolheatoutput,whilemaintainingcleanandefficientflaming
combustion,whichbooststheefficientdeliveryofheattoyourhome.
Theemissioncontrolandadvancedcombustionfeaturesofyourwoodinbuiltcanonlywork
properlyifyourfuelisinthecorrectmoisturecontentrangeof15to20percent.SeeSection3:

2.4 ECOMAXXWOODHEATING’SCOMMITMENTTOYOUANDTHE
ENVIRONMENT
TheEcoMaxWoodheatingteamiscommittedtoprotectingtheenvironment,sowedoeverything
wecantouseonlymaterialsinourproductsthatwillhavenolastingnegativeimpactonthe
environment.

2.4.1 WHATISYOURNEWWOODINBUILTMADEOF?
Thebodyofyourwoodinbuilt,whichismostofitsweight,iscarbonsteel.Shoulditeverbecome
necessarymanyyearsinthefuture,almosttheentirewoodinbuiltcanberecycledintonew
products,thuseliminatingtheneedtominenewmaterials.
Thepaintcoatingonyourwoodinbuiltisverythin.ItsVOCcontent(VolatileOrganic
Components)isverylow.VOCscanberesponsibleforsmog,soallthepaintusedduringthe
manufacturingprocessmeetsthelatestairqualityrequirementswithregardstoVOCreductionor
elimination.
Theairtubesaresteel,whichcanalsoberecycled.
Thebaffleismadeofstainlesssteel.Shoulditeverbecomenecessary,itcanberecycledintonew
products.
Firebrickismainlycomposedofsilicondioxide,alsoknownassilica,aproductprocessedfroma
minedmineral.Itismostcommonlyfoundinnatureintheformofsandandclay.Disposalata
landfillisrecommended.
Thedoorandglassgasketsarefibreglasswhichisspunfrommeltedsand.Blackgasketshavebeen

3.2.1 WHATISGOODFIREWOOD?
Goodfirewoodhasbeencuttothecorrectlengthforthewoodinbuilt,splittoarangeofsizesand
stackedintheopenuntilitsmoisturecontentisreducedto11to16percent.
3.2.2 TREESPECIES
Thetreespeciesthefirewoodisproducedfromislessimportantthanitsmoisturecontent.The
maindifferenceinfirewoodfromvarioustreespeciesisthedensityofthewood.Hardwoodssuch
asgums,Manukaorironbarkaredenserthansoftwoods.Hardwoodwillproducelong‐lastingcoal
bedscombinedtomoreheatandlongerburncycles.
Old,leakycastironwoodinbuiltswouldn’tholdafireovernightunlesstheywerefedlargepieces
ofhardwood.Thatisnolongertrue.Youcansuccessfullyheatyourhomebyusinglesswoodand
givetheforestabreakatthesametime.
3.2.3 LOGLENGTH
Logsshouldbecutabout25mmshorterthanthefirebox so
theyfitineasily.Piecesthatareslightlytoolongmake
loadingthewoodinbuiltverydifficult.Themostcommon
standardlengthoffirewoodis400mm.
Thepiecesshouldbeaconsistentlength,withamaximumof
25mmvariationfrompiecetopiece.
3.2.4 PIECESIZE
Firewooddriesmorequicklywhenitissplit.Largeunsplitroundscantakeyearstodryenoughto
burn.Evenwhendried,unsplitlogsaredifficulttoignitebecausetheydon’thavethesharpedges
wheretheflamesfirstcatch.Logsassmallas75mmshouldbesplittoencouragedrying.
Woodshouldbesplittoarangeofsizes,fromabout75mmto150mmincrosssection.Havinga
rangeofsizesmakesstartingandrekindlingfiresmucheasier.Often,thefirewoodpurchasedfrom
commercialsuppliersisnotsplitfinelyenoughforconvenientstoking.Itissometimesadvisableto
resplitthewoodbeforestackingtodry.

4.1 YOURFIRSTFIRES
Twothingswillhappenasyouburnyourfirstfewfires;thepaintcuresandtheinternal
componentsofthewoodinbuiltareconditioned.
Asthepaintcures,someofthechemicalsvaporize.Thevaporsarenotpoisonous,buttheydo
smellbad.Freshpaintfumescanalsocausefalsealarmsinsmokedetectors.So,whenyoufirst
lightyourwoodinbuilt,bepreparedbyopeningdoorsand/orwindowstoventilatethehouse.As
youburnhotterandhotterfires,moreofthepaintedsurfacesreachthecuringtemperatureofthe
paint.Thesmellofcuringpaintdoesnotdisappearuntilyouhaveburnedoneortwoveryhot
fires.
Burnoneortwosmallfirestobeginthecuringandconditioningprocess.Thenbuildbiggerand
hotterfiresuntilthereisnolongeranypaintsmellfromthewoodinbuilt.Oncethepaintsmell
disappears,yourwoodinbuiltisreadyforseriousheating.
Buildyourfirstfewfireswiththebloweronhightoallowthehightemperaturepainttocure.
4.2 LIGHTINGFIRES
Eachpersonwhoheatswithwooddevelopstheirownfavoritewaytolightfires.Whatever
methodyouchoose,yourgoalshouldbetogetahotfireburningquickly.Afirethatstartsfast
produceslesssmokeanddepositslesscreosoteinthefluesystem.Herearethreepopularand
effectivewaystostartwoodinbuilts.

Theconventionalwaytobuildawoodinbuilt isto
bunchup5to10sheetsofplainnewspaperandplace
theminthefirebox.Next,place10orsopiecesoffine
kindlingonthenewspaper.Thiskindlingshouldbe
verythin;lessthan25mm(1”).Next,placesome
largerkindlingpiecesonthefinekindling.Openthe
aircontrolfullyandlightthenewspaper.Ifyouhavea
tall,straightfluesystemyoushouldbeabletoclose
thedoorimmediatelyandthefirewillignite.Ifyour

graduallybecausethefireboxisloadedbeforethefireislit.Atopdownfirecanprovideuptotwo
hoursofheatingormore.Thetopdownmethodonlyworksproperlyifthewoodiswell‐seasoned.
Startbyplacingthreeorfourfull‐sizedsplitpiecesofdryfirewoodinthefirebox.Next,place4or5
morefinelysplitpiecesoffirewood(50mmto75mm[2”to3”]india.)onthebaselogsatright
angles(logcabinstyle).Nowplaceabout10piecesoffinelysplitkindlingonthesecondlayerat
rightangles.
Thefireistoppedwithabout5sheetsofnewspaper.Youcanjustbunchthemupandstuffthemin
betweenthekindlingandtheundersideofthebaffle.Oryoucanmakenewspaperknotsbyrolling
upsinglesheetscornertocornerandtyingaknotinthem.Theadvantageofknotsisthatthey
don’trolloffthefireastheyburn.Lightthenewspaperandwatchasthefireburnsfromtopto
bottom.
4.2.3 TWOPARALLELLOGS

4.3 MAINTAININGWOODFIRES
4.3.1 GENERALADVICE
Woodheatingwithaspaceheaterisverydifferentthanotherformsofheating.Therewillbe
variationsinthetemperatureindifferentpartsofthehouseandtherewillbevariationsin
temperaturethroughoutthedayandnight.Thisisnormal,andforexperiencedwoodburners
theseareadvantagesofzoneheatingwithwood.
Donotexpectsteadyheatoutputfromyourwoodinbuilt.Itisnormalforitssurfacetemperature
toriseafteranewloadofwoodisignitedandforitstemperaturetograduallydeclineasthefire
progresses.Thisrisingandfallingoftemperaturecanbematchedtoyourhouseholdroutines.For
example,theareatemperaturecanbecoolerwhenyouareactive,suchaswhendoinghousework
orcooking,anditcanbewarmerwhenyouareinactive,suchaswhenreadingorwatching
television.
Woodburnsbestincycles.Acyclestartswhenanewloadofwoodisignitedbyhotcoalsandends
whenthatloadhasbeenconsumeddowntoabedofcharcoalaboutthesamesizeasitwaswhen
thewoodwasloaded.Donotattempttoproduceasteadyheatoutputbyplacingasinglelogon
thefireatregularintervals.Alwaysplaceatleastthree,andpreferablymore,piecesonthefireat
atimesothattheheatradiatedfromonepiecehelpstoignitethepiecesnexttoit.Eachloadof
woodshouldprovideseveralhoursofheating.Thesizeofeachloadcanbematchedtothe
amountofheatneeded.
Whenyouburnincycles,yourarelyneedtoopenthewoodinbuilt’sloadingdoorwhilethewood
isflaming.Thisisanadvantagebecausethereismorechancethatsmokewillleakfromthewood
inbuiltwhenthedoorisopenedasafullfireisburning.
IFYOUMUSTOPENTHEDOORWHILETHEFUELISFLAMING,OPENTHEAIRCONTROLFULLYFOR
AFEWMINUTES,THENUNLATCHANDOPENTHEDOORSLOWLY.
4.3.2 ASHREMOVAL
Ashshouldberemovedfromthefireboxeverytwoorthreedaysoffulltimeheating.Donotlet
theashbuildupinthefireboxbecauseitwillinterferewithproperfiremanagement.Ashshould
beclearedorremovedwhenbuildupreachesthelevelofthedooropening.

Thebesttimetoremoveashisafteranovernightfirewhenthewoodinbuiltisrelativelycool,but
thereisstillsomefluesystemdrafttodrawtheashdustintothewoodinbuiltandpreventitfrom
comingintotheroom.
NOTE:Theblowershouldbeturnedin“OFF”positionpriortoashremovaltoavoidashestobe
pulledtowardstheinbuiltandthenpushedintotheroom.
Afterasheshavebeenremovedfromthewoodinbuiltandplacedinatightlycoveredmetal
container,theyshouldbetakenoutsideimmediately.Theclosedcontainerofashesshouldbe
placedonanon‐combustiblefloororonthegroundwellawayfromallcombustiblematerials
pendingfinaldisposal.Ashesnormallycontainsomelivecharcoalthatcanstayhotforseveral
days.Iftheashesaredisposedofbyburialinsoilorotherwiselocallydispersed,theyshouldbe
retainedintheclosedcontaineruntilallcindershavethoroughlycooled.Otherwasteshallnotbe
placedinthiscontainer.

4.3.3 RAKINGCHARCOAL
Rekindlethefirewhenyounoticethattheroomtemperaturehasfallen.Youwillfindmostofthe
remainingcharcoalatthebackofthefirebox,furthestfromthedoor.Rakethesecoalstowards
thedoorbeforeloading.Therearetworeasonsforthisrakingofthecoals.First,itconcentrates
themnearwheremostofthecombustionairentersthefireboxandwheretheycanignitethenew
loadquickly,andsecond,thecharcoalwillnotbesmotheredbythenewloadofwood.Ifyouwere
tosimplyspreadthecharcoalout,thenewloadwillsmoulderforalongtimebeforeigniting.
Removeashfirst,andthenrakecharcoaltowardsthefrontofthefireboxbeforeloadingsothatit
willignitethenewload.
4.3.4 FIRINGEACHNEWLOADHOT
Placethenewloadofwoodonandbehindthecharcoalandnottooclosetotheglass.Closethe
doorandopentheaircontrolfully.Leavetheaircontrolfullyopenuntilthefireboxisfullof
flames,thewoodhascharredtoblackanditsedgesareglowingred.Firingeachloadofwoodhot
accomplishesafewthings:
•drivesthesurfacemoisturefromthewood,
•createsalayerofcharonthewood,whichslowsdownitsreleaseofsmoke,
•heatsthefireboxcomponentssotheyreflectheatbacktothefire,and
•heatsthefluesystemsoitcanproducestrong,steadydraftfortherestofthecycle.

Althoughitisimportanttofireeachnewloadhottoprepareforacleanburn,donotallowthefire
toburnatfullintensityformorethanafewminutes.

DONOTOVERFIRE.
Whenyouburnanewloadofwoodhottoheatupthewood,thewoodinbuiltandtheflue
system,theresultwillbeasurgeofheatfromthewoodinbuilt.Thisheatsurgeiswelcomewhen
theroomtemperatureisalittlelowerthandesirable,butnotwelcomeifthespaceisalready
warm.Therefore,alloweachloadofwoodtoburndownsothatthespacebeginstocooloffa
littlebeforeloading.Lettingthespacecoolbeforeloadingisoneofthesecretstocleanburning
andeffectivezoneheating.
4.3.5 TURNINGDOWNTHEAIRSUPPLY
Oncethefirewood,fireboxandfluesystemarehot,youcanbegintoreducetheairsupplyfora
steadyburn.
Asyoureducetheairsupplytothefire,twoimportantthingshappen.First,thefiringrateslows
downtospreadtheheatenergyinthefueloveralongerperiodoftime.Second,theflowrateof
exhaustthroughthewoodinbuiltandflueslowsdown,whichgivesmoretimeforthetransferof
heatfromtheexhaust.Youwillnoticethatasyoureducetheairsetting,theflamesslowdown.
Thisisyourindicationthatthewoodinbuiltisburningatitspeakefficiency.
Iftheflamesgetsmallandalmostdisappearwhenyouturndowntheair,youhaveturneddown
theairtooearly,oryourfirewoodiswetterthanitshouldbe.Withgoodfuelandcorrectair
controluse,theflamesshouldslowdown,butshouldstaylargeandsteady,evenastheairsupply
isreduced.

4.3.6 BUILDINGDIFFERENTFIRESFORDIFFERENTNEEDS
Usingtheaircontrolisnottheonlywaytomatchthewoodinbuilt’sheatoutputtotheheat
demand.YourhousewillneedfarlessheatinJanuarythaninMaytobekeptatacomfortable
temperature.Ifyoufillthefireboxfullinfallweather,youwilleitheroverheatthespaceorturn
thewoodinbuiltdownsomuchthatthefirewillbesmokyandinefficient.Herearesome
suggestionsforbuildingfirestomatchdifferentheatdemand.
4.3.6.1 SmallFirestoTaketheChillOfftheHouse
Tobuildasmallfirethatwillproducealowheatoutput,usesmallpiecesoffirewoodandload
themcrisscrossinthefirebox.Thepiecesshouldbeonly75mmto100mmindiameter.After
rakingthecoals,youcanlaytwopiecesparalleltoeachothercornertocornerinthefireboxand
laytwomoreacrossthemintheotherdirection.Opentheaircontrolfullyandonlyreducetheair
afterthewoodisfullyflaming.Thiskindoffireisgoodformildweatherwhenyouarearoundto
tendthewoodinbuiltandshouldprovideenoughheatforfourhoursormore.Smallfireslikethis
areagoodtimetousesofterwoodspeciessotherewillbelesschanceofoverheatingthehouse.
4.3.6.2 LongLastingLowOutputFires
Sometimesyouwillwanttobuildafiretolastuptoeighthours,butdon’tneedintenseheat.In
thiscaseusesmallerpiecesofhardwoodandplacethelogscompactlyinthefireboxsothepieces
arepackedtightlytogether.Youwillneedtofiretheloadhotforlongenoughtofullycharthelog
surfacesbeforeyoucanturntheairdown.Makesurethefireisflamingbrightlybeforeleavingthe
firetoburn.
4.3.6.3 HighOutputFiresforColdWeather
Whentheheatdemandishighduringcoldweather,you’llneedafirethatburnssteadilyand
brightly.Thisisthetimetouseyourbiggestpiecesofhardwoodfuelifyouhaveit.Putthebiggest
piecesatthebackofthefireboxandplacetherestofthepiecescompactly.Adenselybuiltfirelike
thiswillproducethelongestburnyourwoodinbuiltiscapableof.
Youwillneedtobecautiouswhenbuildingfireslikethisbecauseiftheairisturneddowntoo
much,thefirecouldsmoulder.Makesurethewoodisflamingbrightlybeforeleavingthefireto
burn.Thewoodshouldbepositionedinanorth/southfashion,thatis,fromthefronttotheback
ofthefirebox.
4.3.6.4 MaximumBurnCycleTimes
Theburncycletimeistheperiodbetweenloadingwoodonacoalbedandtheconsumptionof
thatwoodbacktoacoalbedofthesamesize.Theflamingphaseofthefirelastsforroughlythe
firsthalfoftheburncycleandthesecondhalfisthecoalbedphaseduringwhichthereislittleor
noflame.Thelengthofburnyoucanexpectfromyourwoodinbuilt,includingboththeflaming
andcoalbedphases,willbeaffectedbyanumberofthings,suchas:
•fireboxsize,
•theamountofwoodloaded,
•thespeciesofwoodyouburn,
•thewoodmoisturecontent,
•thesizeofthespacetobeheated,
•theclimatezoneyoulivein,and
•thetimeofyear.

5MAINTAININGYOURWOODHEATINGSYSTEM
5.1 WOODINBUILTMAINTENANCE
Yournewwoodinbuiltwillgivemanyyearsofreliableserviceifyouuseandmaintainitcorrectly.
Someoftheinternalcomponentsofthefirebox,suchasfirebricks,bafflesandairtubes,willwear
overtimeunderintenseheat.Youshouldalwaysreplacedefectivepartswithoriginalparts(see
Appendix4:ExplodedDiagramandPartsList).Forfiringeachloadhottobeginacycleas
describedabovewillnotcauseprematuredeteriorationofthewoodinbuilt.However,lettingthe
woodinbuiltrunwiththeaircontrolfullyopenforentirecyclescancausedamageovertime.The
hotteryourunthewoodinbuiltthroughoutburncycles,themorequicklyitscomponentswill
deteriorate.Forthatreason,neverleavethewoodinbuiltunattendedwhileanewloadisbeing
firedhot.
5.1.1 CLEANINGDOORGLASS
Undernormalconditions,yourdoorglassshouldstayrelativelyclear.Ifyourfirewoodisdry
enoughandyoufollowtheoperatinginstructionsinthismanual,awhitish,dustydepositwillform
ontheinsideoftheglassafteraweekorsoofuse.Thisisnormalandcanbeeasilyremovedwhen
thewoodinbuiltiscoolbywipingwithadampclothorpapertowelandthendrying.Nevertryto
cleantheglasswhenthewoodinbuiltishot.
Inspringandfallwhenthewoodinbuiltisrunatlowertemperatures,youmayseesomelight
brownstainsforming,especiallyatthelowercornersoftheglass.Thisindicatesthatthefirehas
beensmokyandsomeofthesmokehascondensedontheglass.Whentheweatherismild,you
mayfindthatlettingthefiregooutisbetterthantryingtomaintainacontinuousfire.Usethe
techniquedescribedaboveforbuildingafiretotakethechilloffthehouse.
Ifyoudogetbrownstainsontheglassyoucanremovethemwithspecialcleanersforwoodinbuilt
glassdoors.Donotuseabrasivestocleanyourwoodinbuilt’sdoorglass.
Thedepositsthatformontheglassarethebestindicationofthequalityofyourfuelandhowwell
youaredoinginoperatingthewoodinbuilt.Yourgoalshouldbeclearglasswithnobrownstains.
Ifyoucontinuetoseebrownstainsontheglass,somethingaboutyourfuelandoperating
procedureneedstobechanged.Stainsontheglassindicateincompletecombustionofthewood,
whichalsomeansmoresmokeemissionsandfasterformationofcreosoteinthefluesystem.
Ifyouseebrownstreakscomingfromtheedgeoftheglass,itistimetoreplacethegasketaround
theglass.Visityourwoodinbuiltretailertogettheself‐adhesiveglassgasketandfollowthe
instructionsbelowforinstallation.
5.1.2 DOORADJUSTMENT
Inorderforyourwoodinbuilttoburnatitsbestefficiency,thedoormustprovideaperfectseal
withthefirebox.Therefore,thegasketshouldbeinspectedperiodicallymakingsuretoobtainan
airtightfit.Airtightnesscanbeimprovedwithasimplelatchmechanismadjustment.Toadjust:

1. Makesuretheheateriscold.
2. Openthedoor.
3. Unscrewthelockscrew(A)onthedoorhandleshaft.

thedoorseal,rotatehandleshaftclockwise.
5. Closethedoorandlock.
6. Tryforseal.

5.1.3 REPLACINGTHEDOORGASKET
Itisimportanttomaintainthegasketingoodcondition.Afterayearormoreofuse,thedoor
gasketwillcompressandbecomehard,whichmayallowairtoleakpastit.Youcantestthe
conditionofthedoorgasketbyclosingandlatchingthedooronastripofpaper.Testallaround
thedoor.Ifthepaperslipsouteasilyanywhere,itistimetoreplacethegasket.
UsethecorrectreplacementgasketthatyoucanpurchasefromyourEcomaxxWoodheating
dealer.Thediameteranddensityofthegasketisimportanttogettingagoodseal.
Placethedoorface‐downonsomethingsoftlikeacushionofragsorpieceofcarpet.Removethe
oldgasketfromthedoorbypullingandpryingitoutwithanoldscrewdriver.Thenusethe
screwdrivertoscrapetheoldgasketadhesivefromthedoor.Nowruna6mm(1/4”)beadofhigh
temperaturesiliconeinthedoorgasketgroove.Startingfromthemiddleofthehingeside,press
thegasketintothegroove.Donotstretchthegasketasyouplaceit.Leavethegasketabout12
mm(1/2”)longwhenyoucutitandpresstheendintothegroove.Tuckanyloosefibresunderthe
gasketandintothesilicone.Closethedooranddonotusethewoodinbuiltfor24hours.
5.1.4 REPLACINGTHEGLASSGASKETAND/ORTHEGLASS
Itisagoodideatoreplacetheglassgasketwhenthedoorgasketisreplaced.Thegasketisflat,
adhesive‐backed,wovenfibreglass.Removethespringpin(A)fromthehandleshaft,thenut(B)
andtheglassretainer(C).Liftouttheglassandpullofftheoldgasket.Thisisagoodtimetoclean
theglassthoroughly.
