1. NAVTEX System
1.1Productintroduction
NAVTEX isdesigned toprovide internationalautomateddirect-printing servicesuchas
promulgation ofSAR(Searchand Rescue)information,Navigationalwarnings,Meteorological
warningsand urgentinformation toships.Ithasbeen developed toprovide alow-cost, simple
and automated meansofreceiving maritimesafetyinformation foron boardshipsatsea and in
coastalwaters.Theinformation transmitted byNAVTEXcoaststation,isdelivered toeachship
directly.Onthebridge,theNAVTEXreceiveraccepts,selectsinformation required forthe ship
and displays inLCDautomaticallyinEnglishorKorean mode asfollowing [Figure1-1]
internationalEnglishbroadcasting and [Figure1-2]Koreanbroadcasting.NAVTEX meansthe
systemforbroadcastand automaticreception ofmaritimesafetyinformation bymeansof
narrow-band direct-printing telegraphyand itisacomponentofIMO(InternationalMaritime
Organization)/IHO(InternationalHydrographicOrganization)WWNWSWorldWide Navigational
Warning Service) defined byIMOAssemblyresolution A.706(17).Inthe GMDSS(GlobalMaritime
Distress and SafetySystem),sincethe1stAugust1993,NAVTEX receiving capabilityhas
becomepartofthe mandatoryequipmentwhichisrequired tobe carried incertainvesselsunder
the provisionsofthe InternationalConventionforthe SafetyofLifeatSea(SOLAS),1974,as
amended in1988.
Thissystem providesInternationaland Nationalserviceasfollows.
1. InternationalNAVTEX servicemeansthe coordinated broadcastand automaticreception
on frequency 518kHzofmaritimesafetyinformation (MSI)bymeansofnarrow-band
direct-printing telegraphyusing the Englishlanguage.
2. NationalNAVTEX servicemeansthe broadcastand automaticreception ofmaritimesafety
information bymeansofnarrow-band direct-printing telegraphyusing 490kHzor4209.5kHz
frequenciesotherthan 518kHzasdecided languagesbythe Administrationsconcerned.
