Nest Protect glows blue duringsetup and
testing. Use
the Nestapp to tell each
Nest Protectwhere
it will be. The app is
available
for both iOS and Android.
Once youralarms are setup and installed,
run a manual
test by pressingthe Nest
buttontwice. All
the alarms in your home
will
test themselves and letyou know
everything's workingwell.
Know you're safe ·
Nightly Promise
Nest Protect constantly checks itssensors
and batteries. When you
turn off the lights
for the night, look for a quick green glow-
that means it's working. Sweet dreams.
If it glows yellow when you turn out the lights,
Nest Protect has a message for you. Just
push the Nest button or open the app to see
what's wrong. The batteries may be low,
Wi-Fi
might have gone down or a sensor may
not be working.
A light in the dark
Pathlight
When it's dark, Nest Protect lights your
way
as you walk underneath it. To see how
often Path
light is turningon, check the
Nest app.lfyour Nest Protect is wired, you
can set Path light to Always On and it will
glow whenever the room is dark.
An early warning
Thinks before
it speaks
NestProtect gives you afriendly Heads-Up
before
it soundsthealarm. The lightring
pulses yellow and
it calmly tells you what
the danger is and where it is.

If one Nest Protectsenses danger, every
NestProtect
in the house speaks up. So
the Nest Protect in the bedroom can tell
you if there's smoke in the living room.
Quiet it down
Simply press the Nest button or use the
app to silence Nest Protect. Hushing the
Nest Protect that detected the problem
will also hush the others.

When smoke or CO reaches dangerous
levels, all
of your Nest Protects tell you
where
the emergency is, pulse red and
make a loud sound.

Safety History
It's hard to remember what happens

an emergency. So Nest Protectdoes
it for you. The Nest app shows you the
last 10 days worth of Heads-Up alerts
and EmergencyAlarms. You'll see when
an alert happened and why. You'll also
see peak
CO levels so you know how

Nest Protect isdesigned

detect
smokeand
carbon monoxide in a residentialenvironment.

Location in your home
The National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) recommends installinga smoke alarm
in the following areas:
• On everyfloor, includingfinished attics
and basements.
• Inside and outsideeverysteepingarea.
• At
the top of thefirst-to-second floor
stairwayand on the basementceiling near
the entry of the stairs.
• In homes with morethan 1,000 square feet
(93 m2) on one level, additionalalarms may
be required.
NestProtect should be installed
at
least 10 feet (3m) awayfrom cooktops
or cookingappliances.
NestProtectshould
NOT be installed
in unfinished
attics or garages.

4.Test before
you
install
Once you'redone
setting
up
all
of
your Nest
Protects, make sure
they've
been added
to
your
Nest
Account. Push
the
Nest
button
on
one
Nest
Protect
and
follow
the
instructions.
All
of
your
Nest
Protects
should speak up.
Nowyou can install
them
on
the
ceiling
or
wall.
Tip:
To
double
check
Nest
Protect's
room name,
press
the
Nest
button
once. You'llhear
the
location
you assigned
it
duringsetup.
It'll
saysomething like,
"Readyin
the
bedroom."

Turn
offpower

yourself
and avoid blowinga fuse.
Switch
off
the
correct
circuit
breaker
for
the
room whereyou are
installing
Nest
Protect
or
remove
the
fuse
from

6. Remove your old smoke alarm
To preventelectricalshock, make sure the
green power light is off on the alarm. You
may have to twist the alarm to release it.
Carefully remove it to keep from damaging
yourceiling
or wall.

Tip: Your old smokealarm might makea loud noise
when you
disconnect it.
7. Remove the old backplate
Unscrew the backplatefrom the electrical
box. Save
the screws to install the Nest
backplatelater.

8.Remove the old connector
Unscrew the wire nuts to detach the 120V
connector from yourold smokealarm.
The exposed wire should be straight.

9.Attach the Nest connector
Hold the white wireends together, cap them
with a wire nut and twist clockwise until it's
secure. Do the same with the black wires.
There's no need
for the red/orange/yellow
wire. Simplycap
it with a wire nut and twist
until secure.

10. Install the Nest backplate
Screw the Nest backplate to the existing
electrical box, reusing the existingscrews.
You can alsoscrew the backplate directly
into the wall or ceiling with the Nestscrews.
Tip: All smoke alarms prefer to live in a dust free area,
so removeany
dust beforeyou install Nest Protect.
11. Connect power
Plug the 120V connectorinto the back of
your Nest Protect.

12. Installyour Nest Protect
First, tuck anyexcess wiringinto the electrical
box. Line up
the three tabs on the back of your
Nest Protect with the notcheson the backplate.
Hold NestProtectagainst
the backplate and
turn it clockwise. Continue turning until it's
square with the wall or ceiling. Install the rest
of your NestProtects if you have more.

Tip: If you ever need to remove it (forcleaning or
battery replacement), turn off power to your
Nest Protect at the breakerbox or remove the
fuse first. Then turn counterclockwise until it
disconnectsfrom the backplate.

Nest Protect in the house should speak
