Reference Manual

Up to three setting combinations that are frequently used for shooting (user
settings) can be saved in U1, U2 and U3. Shooting ispossible in P (Programmed
auto), S (Shutter-priority auto), A (Aperture-priority auto) or M(Manual).
Rotate the mode dial to Ul, U2 or U3 to retrieve the w
settings saved in Save user settings.

the mode dial is rotated to U1,U2 orU3 can be
changed as many times as you want in Save user settings,

Choose the standard shooting mode (default setting is P). The
current flexible program (when set to P), shutter speed (when
Shooting mode set to S or M) or aperture value (when set to A or M) settings 29
are also saved.
Set the zoom position for when the mode dial isset. Choose
Focal length 28 mm (default setting), 35 mm, 50 ram, 85 mm, 105 ram,
(35mm equiv.) 135 ram, 200 mm or Current zoom position.
Set the information displayed on the monitor when the mode
Photo info did isset. This setting is not applied to the setup menu _'574
settings.
Virtual horizon Set the virtual horizon display for when the mode dial is set. _'574
display This setting is not applied to the setup menu settings.
Initial monitor Set the information displayed on the monitor when the mode 15
display dial isset (default setting is Show info).
Flash mode Set the flash mode for when the mode dial is set. 61

Available functions differ according to the shooting mode as follows.
•See "List of the Default Settings" (_69) for more information on the default
settings in each shooting mode.
a SCENE EFFECTS U1,U2,U3 _
1 Use the Remote Control ML-L3 (available separately) to release the shutter (_105). It is
convenient for taking self-portraits of group shots and effectively eliminating blur caused
by camera shake that occurs when the shutter-release button is pressed.
2 Set the method of how to change the focus area for autofocus (_54). Set Multi selector
right press to Off in the setup menu (1]_]104) ifyou do not want to display the selected
focus area when the multi sector • is pressed.

Features That Can Be Set Using the Multi Selector
Using the Flash (Flash Modes)
You carl shoot pictures with a flash by raising the built in flash. You carl set a flash
mode that suits the shooting conditions.
1 Press the _ @ (flash pop-up) button to raise the flash (_7).
• When the flash is lowered, the flash mode is fixed at (_ (off).
_t Press • (_ flash mode) on the multi selector,

• When the manual flash isselected, press • before

• When _1_ (slow sync) or _F (rear-curtain sync) is
selected for flash mode, the flash mode can be _ _ _ _ ]
switched by pressing • before pressing the _) button. _ [
• Ifthe _) button is not pressed within a few seconds, the [ /
selection isset and the setting menu disappears.
• When _@llTn(auto) is applied, _ is only displayed for a few seconds even if monitor
indicators ([_15) are turned on.
4Frame the subject and take a picture.
• The flash lamp indicates the status of the flash when
the shutter-release button is pressed halfway.
- On: The flash will fire when you press the shutter-
release button all the way.
- Blinking: The flash is charging. The camera cannot
take pictures.
- Off: The flash will not fire when a picture is taken.
• If the battery is low, the monitor will be turned offwhile
the flash is charging.
[] Lowering the Flash
When not using the flash,gently push to lower the flash until it clicksshut (_7).
[] Effective Range of the Built-in Flash
The built in flash hasa range of about 0.3 to 9.0 m (1 ft to 29 ft) for wide angle position, and about
0.3to 4.5 m (1 ft to 14 ft) for telephoto zoom position (when ISO sensitivity isset to Auto).

Features That Can Be Set Using the Multi Selector
Available Flash Modes

Flash fires automatically when lighting is dim.
_@ with
Best choice for portraits. Reduces red-eye effect caused by flash in portraits ([_[_)63).
(_) Off
Hash does not fire.
•Available when the scene mode is_ (scene auto selector) or an optional
Speedlight (external flash unit) isattached.
• Use of a tripod is recommended to avoid the effects of camera shake when
shooting in a dark location.
The flash fires when a picture istaken, regardless of how bright the subject is.Use to
"fil[dn" (illuminate) shadows and backlit subjects.
M,_ Manual
Flash isforcibly fired at the flash output that is setfor the builtdn flash.
• Choose the flash output from M_Full (full flash), M_1/2, M_1/4, M_1/8, M_1/16,
M_1/32 and M_1/64. For example, when M_1/16 ischosen, the flash is 1/16 of the
full flash.
• Not available when a Speedlight flash unit (available separately) is attached.
_I_ Slow sync/_ Rear-curtain
• Slow sync:
Fill flash is combined with a slow shutter speed.
Suitable for portraits of human subjects shot at night or under dim light. Flash
illuminates main subject; slow shutter speeds are used to capture background.
• Rear-curtain sync:
Fill flash firesjust before the shutter closes, creating the effect of a stream of light
behind moving subjects.

[] Flash Mode Setting
•The setting varies with shooting mode. See "Available Functions" (_60) and "List of the Default
Settings" (_69) for more information.
• This feature may not be used in combination with certain features, See "Features That Cannot Be
Used Simultaneously" (_80).
• The changed flash mode setting applied in the following situations is saved in the camera's
memory even after the camera is turned off,
When shooting mode P,S,Aor Mis used
When _ (auto with red eye reduction) is selected in I_1 (Auto) mode

Features That Can Be Set Using the Multi Selector
[] Auto with Red-eye Reduction
This camera uses advanced red-eye reduction ("In-Camera Red-Eye Fix").
Pre flashes are fired repeatedly at low intensity before the main flash, reducing the red eye effect,
If the camera detects "red eye" when a picture is taken, Nikon's own In Camera Red Eye Fix processes
the image before it is recorded,
Note the following when taking pictures;
• Because pre flashes are fired, there is a slight lag between when the shutter release button is
pressed and when the picture is shot,
• The time required to save the picture increases slightly,
• Advanced red eye reduction may not produce the desired results in some situations,
• In extremely rare instances, areas not subiect to red eye may be affected by advanced red eye
reduction processing, In these cases, choose another mode and try again,
• The red eye reduction process when N RW (RAW) images (_75) are recorded consists only of the
pre flashing before the main flash (including the JPEG image that is recorded at the same time),
When Red-eye reduction in the setup menu (_ 104) is set to Pre-flash off, the shutter is released
immediately when the shutter release button is pressed all the way.
[] External Flash Unit
You can attach the following Nikon Bpeedlights on the camera's accessory shoe (_2) to take
pictures.
• Bpeedlights SB 400, SB 600, SB 700, SB 800, BB 900

Features That Can Be Set Using the Multi Selector
Using the Self-timer
Tile self-timer is suitable for taking group pictures and reducing tile vibration when
tile shutter-release button is pressed.
When using the seJfitimer_ use of a tripod is recommended. Set Vibration reduction
in tile setup menu (_104) to Off when using a tripod to stabilize tile ca mera.
1 Press _ (__Dself-timer) on the multi selector.

• To change the time for self-timer, press • before
pressing the _) button.
• <_)10s (ten seconds): suitable for group pictures.
• _) 2s (two seconds): suitable for preventing camera
shake.
• When the shooting mode is set to Pet portrait in scene mode, I_i (pet portrait auto
release) isdisplayed (_45). The self-timer _ los and _ 2s are not available.
• The mode selected for the self-timer isdisplayed.
• If the _) button isnot pressed within a few seconds, the selection is set and the setting
menu disappears.
3Frame the picture and press the shutter-release button halfway.
• Set the focus and exposure.
4Press the shutter-release button all the
way. [_
• The self-timer starts, and the number of
seconds remaining before the shutter is
released isdisplayed. The self-timer lamp blirlks
while the timer iscounting down. About one %t_,_ _54
second before the shutter isreleased, the lamp
stops blinking and remains lit.
• When the shutter is released, the self-timer
turns OFF.
•To stop the timer before a picture is taken,
press the shutter-release button again.

Smile Timer (Shooting Smiling Faces)
When this mode is selected, the c:amera detects smiling faces and automatic:ally
releases the shutter even if you don't press the shutter-release button.
•This function can be used when the shooting mode is I_1 (auto), P, S, A, M,
Ul, U2, U3, -_] (low noise night), scene mode Portrait or Night portrait.
1 Press _ (__Dself-timer) on the multi selector.
•Change any flash mode, exposure, or shooting menu
settings before pressing the _ button.
2Use the multi selector to choose _ (smile _]
timer), and press the _]_ button.
• Ifthe _) button is not pressed within a few seconds, the
selection isset and the setting menu disappears.

3Frame the picture and wait for the subject to ITll _ _
smile without pressing the shutter-release
button.
• When the camera detects aface, ayellow double border
(focus area) is displayed around that face. When the
camera hasfocused on that face, the double border will
turn green for a moment and focus is locked.
• Up to three faces are detected. When more than one face is detected, the face closest
to the center of the frame is framed by a double border and the others by single
borders.
• If the camera detects that the face framed by the double border issmiling, the shutter
is automatically released.
• Eachtime the shutter is released, automatic shooting using face detection and smile
detection is repeated.
4Shooting ends.
• To cancel smile detection and stop shooting, return to step 1 and select OFF.
