About This System
BOWNERS MANUAL
Maintenance Schedule
TheNimbusSierrareverseosmosisbaseunitmustbeservicedonaregularbasistomaintain
efficiency and to safeguard water quality. Each unit is equipped with a pre-filter, a
membrane filter, and a post-filter. These cartridges work together to remove potential
contaminants from your tap water and must be replaced at regular intervals. The chart
below gives a general replacement timetable. For more accurate membrane filter
replacementintervals,thesystemshouldbetestedforTDSbyanauthorizedNimbusdealer.
Instructions for cartridge replacement can be found in Section 10 of the Installation Guide.
Any significant change in performance of the system should be investigated promptly to
avoid secondary damage or deterioration to other parts of the system.
Component Interval Indications For Service

CMAINTENANCE
Replacements
Replacement part numbers are indicated on the side of each filter cartridge. The table
below lists cartridge replacement part numbers as well as part numbers for the other
parts you may need to maintain your unit. To order replacements, please call 800-451-
9343 to be directed to an authorized Nimbus dealer.
This reverse osmosis system contains a replaceable treatment component, critical for
the effective reduction of total dissolved solids. Product water should be tested peri-
odically to verify that the system is performing properly. Please contact your Nimbus
dealer for testing and service.
This reverse osmosis system contains a replaceable component critical to the effiency
of the system. Replacement of the reverse osmosis component should be with one of
identical specifications, as defined by the manufacturer, to assure the same efficiency
and contaminant reduction performance.
Use of non-Sierra replacement parts will invalidate the warranty as set forth in Section
F of this Owner's Manual.

(1)Efficiency rating means the percentage of the influent water to the system that is available to the user as reverse
osmosis treated water under operating conditions that approximate typical daily usage.
(2)Recovery rating means the percentage of the influent water to the membrane portion of the system that is
available to the user as reverse osmosis treated water when the system is operated without a storage tank or when
the storage tank is bypassed.
(3)Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before
or after the system. Systems certified for cyst reduction may be used on disinfected water that may contain filter-
able cysts. The feed water must also be free of potential membrane foulants such as Iron, Hydrogen Sulfide and
maganese.

System Tested and Certified by NSF International against NSF/ANSI Standard 58 for the
reduction of the contaminants listed below. The concentration of the indicated substances in
water entering the system was reduced to a concentration less than or equal to the permis-
sible limit for water leaving the system, as specified in NSF/ANSI 58.
This system has been tested for the treatment of water containing pentavalent arsenic (also
known as As(V), As(+5), or arsenate) at concentrations of 0.30 mg/L or less. This system
reduces pentavalent arsenic, but may not remove other forms of arsenic. This system is to be
used on water supplies containing a detectable free chlorine residual at the system inlet or on
water supplies that have been demonstrated to contain only pentavalent arsenic. Treatment
with chloramine (combined chlorine) is not sufficient to ensure complete conversion of trivalent
arsenic to pentavalent arsenic.Please see the Arsenic Facts section of the Performance Data
sheet for further information.

Arsenic (abbreviated AS) is a naturally occurring contaminate found in many
ground waters. Arsenic is water that has no color, taste or oder. It must be
measured by a lab test. Public water utilities must have their water tested
for arsenic. You can get the results from your own water utility. If you have
your own well, you can have the water tested. The local health department
or the state environmental health agency can provide a list of certified labs.
The cost is typically $15 to $30. Information about arsenic in water can be
found on the internet at the US Environmental Protection Agency website:
www.epa.gov/safewater/arsenic.html.
There are two forms of arsenic: pentavalent arsenic (also called As(V),
As(+5), and arsenate) and trivalent arsenic (also called As(III), As(+3), and
arsenite). In well water, arsenic may be pentavalent, trivalent, or a combina-
tion of both. Special sampling procedures are needed for a lab to determine
what type and how much of each type of arsenic is in the water. Check with
the labs in your area to see if they can provide this type of service.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment systems do not remove trivalent ar-
senic from water very well. RO systems are very effective at removing pen-
tavalent arsenic. A free chlorine residual will rapidly convert trivalent arsenic
to pentavalent arsenic. Other water treatment chemicals such as ozone and
potassium permanganate will also change trivalent arsenic to pentavalent
arsenic. A combined chlorine residual (also called chloramine) may not con-
vert all the trivalent arsenic. If you get your water from a public water utility,
contact the utility to find out if free chlorine or combined chlorine is used in
the water system.
The Nimbus Sierra system is designed to remove pentavalent arsenic. It will
not convert trivalent arsenic to pentavalent arsenic. The system was tested
in a lab. Under those conditions, the system reduced 0.30 mg/L (ppm) pen-
tavalent arsenic to 0.010 mg/L (ppm) (the USEPA standard for drinking water)
or less. The performance of the system may be different at your installation.
Have the treated water tested for arsenic to check if the system is working
properly.
The RO component of the Nimbus Sierra system must be replaced yearly to
ensure the system will continue to remove pentavalent arsenic. The compo-
nent identification and location where you can purchase this component are
listed in this installation manual.

plumbingcodesandbuildingregulationsastheymayposedifferentoradditionalrequirementsfor
theinstallation. Theinstallerisresponsibleforensuringthattheinstallationisincompliancewithall
applicablestateandlocalregulations.
Thissystemhasbeendesignedforinstallationbyalicensedprofessionalsuchasacontractoror
plumber. Propercompletionofthisinstallationwillrequirebasicfamiliaritywithstandardsink
plumbingandproperuseofcommonhandandpowertools.Improperlyinstalledsystemscouldresult
inwaterdamageduetoleaksorflooding.
Donotusewithwaterthatismicrobiologicallyunsafeorofunknownqualitywithoutadequate

The feed water connection assembly supplied with the Sierra system includes components which represent the most
common under-sink plumbing connections currently in use within the United States. If these components do not
match the type of connections installed at your location, contact a local hardware or plumbing supplier to obtain the
correct fittings.

Options
1. Locate and turn off the angle stop valve on the cold water line feeding the sink
where the Sierra unit is to be installed. This valve will usually be located under the
sink on the pipe coming out of the wall.
Hint:BesuretomakethisconnectionontheCOLDwaterfeed,nottheHOT
waterfeed. Ifyouarenotsurewhichlineisthecoldwaterline,openthehot
watertaponthesinkuntilhotwaterflowsfromthefaucet. Thehotwaterline
under the sink can then be identified by touch.
2. Whentheanglestopvalveisclosed,relievepressureintheline
byopeningthecoldwatertaponthesink.
3. Itmaybepossibletoinstallthefeedadapterfittingateitherthe
anglestopvalveoratthefaucetinletconnectordependingonthesize
andtypeoffittingsatyourlocation. Theanglestopvalveispreferable
becauseofitseasieraccessibility.BothoptionsaregiveninFig1.
OptionA-Toinstallthefeedadapteratthefaucet
connectordisconnectthecoldwaterfeedlinewhere
itconnectstothefaucetinletconnector. Thiswill
usuallyrequireanopenendwrench,pliers,orlong
reachfaucetwrench. Proceedtostep4.
OptionB-Toinstallthefeedadapterattheanglestop
valve,disconnectthefeedlineattheanglestop
valve. Thiswillusuallyrequireawrenchorpliers.
Withthisendofthewaterlinefree,proceedtostep

4.Takethe1/4"feedconnectorvalvefromthepartskitandinstallitintothebrassfeedconnector
adapter. Useacrescentwrenchoropen-endwrenchtotightenthevalveintotheadapter(Option
BshowninFig.1). Ifthefeedadapteristobeinstalledatthefaucetinletconnector(OptionA
showninFig.1)itmaybenecessarytoinstallthefeedconnectorvalveafterstep5duetolimited
space.
5.Usingtheflatandconewashersasnecessary,installthefeedadapterintothefaucetinlet
connectororanglestopvalveaschosenabove. Thenreconnectthecoldwaterfeedlinetothe
openendofthefeedadapter. Tightenallcon-
nectionssecurely.
6.Usingthegreen1/4"tubing,installthecom-
pressionnut,plasticferrule,andplastictube
insert. Securethetubingintothefeedconnec-
torvalve.Tightenthetubingretainingnutse-
curely. SeeFig.2.
7.Obtainthesmallfeedvalvewarningtagfromthepartsbagandattachitbyitswiretiestothe
feedvalve.

Note: The drain saddle assembly must be installed before
the 'P' trap. Do not install the drain saddle assembly be-
tween the 'P' trap and the wall.
1. Position drain saddle assembly (Fig. 3) on drain pipe under
sink between the P trap and the sink connection.
2. Orient the drain saddle so that the connector opening
points in the general direction of the planned location for
the R.O. dispensing faucet.
3. Screw the connector nut onto the drain saddle threaded
connector loosely (Fig. 4). Using the connector opening in
the side of the drain saddle as a guide, drill a 3/8" hole
through the wall of the drain pipe.
4. Remove drain saddle assembly. Place the adhesive foam pad over the 3/8" hole in
the drain pipe. Replace the assembly onto the drain pipe, aligning the hole in the
drain with the hole in the drain assembly.
5. Tightenthesaddleboltsevenlyonbothsidesuntilthesaddlegripsthepipesnugly-donot
overtighten.(Fig.4)
Inadditiontocommonhandtools,thefollowingtoolsarerequiredfordrillingthroughthemost
commonsinkmaterials:

Hint:Specialcareshouldbetakenwhendrillingthefaucethole. Acleanholecan
becutinashortperiodoftime,butanyattempttorushtheprocesswillresultinchips
andscratching.Onsomesinkstheremayberidgesontheundersideofthesink. You
mustavoidtheseridgesorotherobstructionstoinsureanadequateflatsurfacefor
installationofthefaucetnutandwasher.
Whenperforminginstallationsthatcallforlocatingthefaucetonthecounter
insteadofthesink,ensurethatadequatespaceisavailableunderneathtoaccom-
modatethefaucetsubassembly.

CAUTION - DO NOT BOTTOM OUT THE DRILL ON CERAMIC SURFACE.
5. Cleanoffthe sinkandwipetheareaclean. Besureallmetalchipsareremovedas theycan
stainporcelainveryquickly.
Tile Sink or Counter
1. Followprocedures1-3 underEnamel,Porcelain,CastIronSinkprocedures.
2. Withthegentle useofthecenterpunchandhammer,breakuptheceramicdisktotheextent
necessarytoremoveit. Removetheceramicdisk.
3. Usethe 1¼"hole sawor wooddrill tocontinue thehole throughthe woodensupport. Clear
awaythe debris.
Stainless Steel Sink
1. Useacenterpunchandhammertomarkthesinksurfacefordrilling.
2. Drilla starterhole witha 1/8"high speeddrill bit.
3. Enlargethe starterhole witha 7/16"high speeddrill bit.
4. Makea1¼"faucetholewiththechassispunchbyplacingthemalecutterofthechassispunch
underthe7/16" pilothole,insertdriving boltthroughfemaledieandpilotholeintothemaledie.
Tightendrivingbolttocutthefaucethole.
5. Usearoundfileto cleanupanyroughedges. Clean upanyfilings,ensuringthat noneget
intothesinkdrainordisposal.

For easier installation, attach all tubing prior to mounting the faucet.
1. Insert polished faucet base (refer to figure H page 5) onto base of faucet.
2. Installthe1/4”yellowdraintubingontothe1/4”barbfitting.Thistubemustbeofsufficient
lengthto reachthe yellowmanifold drainconnection.
3. Insertthewhite3/8”tubingontothelarger3/8”
barbedfitting,beingsureyouhaveenoughtubingto
reach the drain saddle.
4. Slipthe1/4"and3/8"tubingthoughopeningin
polishedfaucetbase(Item#1).Slidewhite plasticspacer

5. Threadthe3/8"washer(Item#3)and mountinglock
nut(Item#4)ontothethreadedstem. (Fig6)
6. Threadfaucetquick-connectadapter(Item#5)onto
threadsoffaucetstem.NOTE:Thisconnectionshouldbe
hand-tightenedonly.Pushoneendof3/8"bluetubing
into3/8" connection.
7. Inserttubingandfaucetassemblydownthroughthe
sink hole.
8. Positionthefaucettothedesiredhandleorientation.
Slipthe slottedwasher betweenthe whiteplastic spacer
andthesink.Securelyhandtightenthemountingnut.
Hint: The airgap tubing connection is
located under the faucet handle. By
orientingtheair-gapfromtheunderside
ofthesink, your faucet handleshould be
correctlyoriented.
9. Connectthewhite3/8”tubingtothedrainsaddleassemblyusingthedrainconnectornut
supplied. Thistubingshouldfollowas directapathaspossible; longruns,loopingordeep sags
willrestrictnormalbrineflowtothedrain. Savetheunusedportionofthetubingfortheinstalla-
tionofthestoragetank.
10.Applyasmallamountofsilicone-basedlubricanttotheO-ringslocatedatthebaseofthe
spout. Firmlyinsertspoutassemblyinto thetopholeoffaucetbody(approximately1/4"). You
mayswivelthefaucet left or right.

Determinethemostpracticalunder-the-sinklocationforplacementoftheSierramanifoldunit
andthecompanionreservoirtank. Ensurethatthespecificlocationallowsadequateaccesstothe
manifoldunitforcartridgereplacementandtothetankfortank-valveoperation.
1.Placethemanifoldandtankintheselectedlocations. Ifdesired,the#6selftappingscrews
maybeusedtosecurethemanifoldunitinpositionbymeansofthetoprearandbottomlip
mountingholes.
2.Taketheunusedportionofthe3/8"whitetubingandinsertoneendfirmlyintothe3/8"(larg-
est)connectoronthetopofthemanifoldunit.
3.Extendthe3/8"whitetubingfromthemanifoldunittothetankvalve. Leaveenoughslackin
thetubingtoallowtheunittoberemovedfromtheinstalledlocationforservicing. Cutoffthe
excessandinsertthe3/8"tubeintothequick-connecttankvalvefittinguntilitisfullyengaged.
4. Extendthe1/4"yellowtubingfromthefaucetunittothemanifold. Leaveenoughslackinthe
tubingtoallowtheunit toberemovedfromthe installedlocationforservicing. Cutoff theexcess
andfirmlyinsertthetubingintothecorrespondingyellowdrainconnectionlocatedonthemani-
fold.
5.Extendthe3/8"blue tubingfromthefaucetunit tothemanifold. Leaveenoughslack inthe
tubingtoallowtheunit toberemovedfromthe installedlocationforservicing. Cutoff theexcess
andfirmlyinsertthetubingintothecorrespondingblueproductwaterconnectionlocatedonthe
manifold.
6.Extendthegreentubingfromthefeedconnectorvalvetothemanifold.Leaveenoughslackin
thetubingtoallowtheunittoberemovedfromtheinstalledlocationforservicing.Cutoffthe
excessandfirmlyinsertthetubingintothecorrespondinggreenfeedconnectionlocatedonthe
manifold.
7.ObtaintheShutoffWarninglabelandaffixittothemanifoldunitsothatitisdirectlyvisible.

SystemActivation andInspection
1. Checkalltubingconnectionstoensuretheyarefirmlyseated. CHECKTOSEETHATTHE
CARTRIDGERETAINERCLIPSAREPROPERLYENGAGED.Theretainerclipsmustinplace
duringlongterm,unattendedoperationofthesystem. Failuretokeeptheretainingclipsinplace
couldresultinaccidentalleaksandflooding.
2. Openthedispensingfaucetatthesink. Closethetankshut-offvalve.
3. Openthefeedwatervalvetothesystem. Observealltubingandconnectionsforseveral
minutestodetectanyleaks. Inapproximately5minutes,(assumingnormalfeedwaterpressure)
thedispensingfaucetshouldbegindripping. Allowthefaucettorunforupto15minutes,then
closethefaucet.
4. Placeapanorothertemporarywaterbasinnearthedrain'P'trap. Loosentheconnectornut
holdingthe3/8"tubeinthedrainsaddleconnector. Pullthetubeoutoftheconnectorandusethe
pantocatchanywaterthatmayspill. Brinewatershouldbeflowingfromthetube. Reconnect
thetubetothedrainsaddleandhand-tightentheconnectornut.
5. Openthetankshut-offvalve.
InitialFlushingProcedure
1. Beforethesystemcanbeusedfordrinkingwaterproductionitmustbeadequatelyflushed.
Eachreservoirtankisdosedwithasmallamountofpowderedsanitizerbeforeshipment,typically
achlorinatingagent,inordertoensuretankinternalcleanliness. Also,thecarbonfiltercartridge
willreleaseasmallamountofcarbonfinesduringthefirsttankfulofflow. Thisflushingprocedure
willallowanysanitizerorcarbonfinestopassfromthesystem.
2. Initialtankfillingwilltakeapproximatelytwoandonehalfhours(basedonaveragefeed
pressure). Whenthetankisfull,thewaterpressurewillhaverisentothepointwheretheauto-
maticshut-offvalveinsidethemanifoldunitwillstopthefeedflowthroughthesystem. Actuation
oftheautomaticshut-offvalvecanbedeterminedbyeithercheckingforalackofbrineflowto
thedrainsaddle,orbylisteningverycloselynearthedispensingfaucetforabsenceofwaterflow
soundthoughtheairgap. Whenthetankhasfilledforthefirsttime,itshouldbeleftundisturbed
foratleast8hourstoensurepropersanitization.
3. After8hourshaselapsed,openthedispensingfaucetfullyandallowtheproductwatertorun
outtodrainatmaximumflow. Theinitialdischargewillbedarkwiththebulkofthecarbon
particlewashout. Theremayalsobethescentofchlorinatedwaterfromthesanitizingagent.
Whentheflowhasdiminishedtoafastdriporsmallstream,closethedispensingfaucet.
4. Fillandflushthetankatleastthreetimespriortouse. Ifnecessary,repeatuntilthechlorina-
tionscenthasdisappeared. Itisimportantthattheflushbedoneatmaximumflow(e.g.thetank
mustbefull)toassistinrapidwashout. Afterthisflushingprocedurethesystemisreadyfor
normaluse.

1. Sierraunitandtankarelocatedwheretheywillnotbesubjecttophysicalimpactsorroughcontact
byheavyobjects.
2. Feedwaterpressuretotheunitisnolessthan40psiandnogreaterthan80PSI.
3. Ensuretheplasticretainerclipsarefullyengaged.Theslidelocksmustsnapintoplaceintheslots.
Iftheclipdoesnotsnapeasilyintoplacethroughtheslotsitmeansthecartridgeisnotfullyinserted
intotheconnectors. Presstoporbottomofcartridgetoengageconnectorsuntilitsnapsintoplace
properly.
4. Alltubingconnections,especiallypush-inquickconnections,arefullyinserted.
5. Tubingconnectedbetweenthefaucetandthedrainsaddlefitting(thefittingattachedtothesink
drainpipe)runs"downhill"tothedrain. Thereshouldbenoloopsorplaceswherewaterwouldnot
flowouttothedrain.
6. Feedandtankvalvesareopen.
7. Withinonetotwohoursafterinitialapplicationofwaterpressure,checkagainforleaksespecially
atthetank,faucettubingandconnectors.Thesepartswillnotseefullpressureuntilapproximately
2hoursafterthesystemisactivated.
8. Flushthreetankfulsofproductwatertodrain. Ifachlorinescentpersists,repeatflushing
procedure in Section 8.

CartridgeReplacement
1. Closethefeedwatershut-offvalve.
2. Closethetankshut-offvalve.
3. OpentheR/Odispensingfaucet.
4. Pullthemanifoldunitfromtheinstalledlocation.
5. Removetheretainingclipatthefrontoftheunit. Pullthecartridgeoffthemanifoldevenlyat
topandbottom. Disposeofusedcartridge.
6. Installthenewcartridge,rockinggentlyfromsidetosideasnecessaryuntilthecartridge
tubesareproperlyengagedinthemanifoldconnectors. Installtheretainingclip,ensuringthe
slidelockssnapintoplaceintheslots. Iftheclipdoesnotsnapeasilyintoplacethroughtheslots
itmeansthecartridgeisnotfullyinsertedintotheconnectors. Presstoporbottomofcartridgeto
engageconnectorsuntilitsnapsintoplaceproperly.
7. Turnonfeedwatershut-offvalve.
8. Turnontankshut-offvalve. Observesystemforanyleaks,especiallyatnewlyreplaced
cartridge.
9. Closedispensingfaucetafterwaterstopsrunning.
10. Ifreplacedcartridgewasapostcarbonoramembranefilter,thesystemshouldbeflushedat
leastonceasdescribedaboveunderSection9.
TankSanitizing
Tanksanitizingshouldbedoneeverytwelvemonthsaspartoftheregularsystemmaintenance
programthroughanauthorizedSierradealer. Thisprocedurewilltakeapproximately30min-
utes. Asasafetyprecaution,alwayswearprotectiveeyegear,mixchemicalsinawell-ventilated
area,andavoidbreathingthefumes.
1. Measure3¼ouncesOxineConcentrateforeachgallonoftankcapacity. Pourintoaplastic
container.
2. Add10gramsofBio-CideActivatorCrystals.Letstandforfiveminutestoactivatesolution.
3. Pouractivatedsolutionintotank. Filltankcompletelywithpotablewater. Bleedairfrom
lines. Letstandfor10minutes.
4. Draintankandlines. Flushthoroughlyusingpotablewater.
