General

SCOPE: This manual focuses on the installation of WinterGard Mat in screed and sand for long-term structural stability.

WinterGard Mat Heating System (1)
The WinterGard heating Mat is a constant wattage heating



When it is necessary to loosen the heating cable from the mat, the plastics strips (VIA-Strips-PL) will help maintain
the correct spacing ( cm). For asphalt layer the metal VIA-Spacer should be used.


For installation in asphalt the sensor cables must be protected by a suitable conduit pipe (suitable to °C short
terms) or be laid under the asphalt layer in the substrate underneath. The conduit pipe is sealed at the end so the
asphalt cannot seep in.


Preparing Subsurface
The heating mat should be installed on a stable subsurface. In suspended structures the substratum may consist of
finished slabs, prestressed concrete or a suspended structure with poured concrete.The heating mat can be laid on

Ramps on a solid substratum do not require any additional thermal insulation.
Appropriate preparations should be made for installing the temperature and moisture sensor.

• The sensor lead should be routed under the layer with the heating mat.
Installation of conduit for cold lead
The conduit for the cold lead should be arranged such that the connection between heating cable and cold cable is
fully embedded in the slab.
In case of asphalt installation, the cold leads should be protected by a suitable conduit pipe (suitable to °C short
terms) and its ends sealed so that asphalt does not seep in. Take the cold lead of the cable through conduit pipe into



Install the temperature and moisture sensor in accordance with the instructions supplied with the unit. Ensure that it
is supported at the correct height. For sensors comprising a separate housing and sensor, install only the housing at
this stage.

Check the Installation
Check heating mat
• Visually check the heating mat for damage.
• Verify that the loosened heating cable has been fastened to the spacers.
• Verify that the laying spacing has been maintained and that the heating mat has been kept away from expansion

• Verify that the heating mat has been installed at the correct depth.
• Visually check the connection leads for correct installation.

Record the layout of each circuit, with particular reference to the position of the connection leads.

Drain Tracing System with Self-Regulating Heating GM-2XT Cable
Purpose
The drain tracing system ensures that melt water can drain away.
Note: The drain tracing circuit should be controlled by the same control system as the other heating circuits.

The insulation resistance test detects damage to the heating cable such as cuts or punctures. It should be carried
out using a 

Proceed as follows:
• Connect one lead to the heat strip braid.
• Connect the other lead to both heat strip conductors together.
• 
• If the insulation resistance is less than this, the heat strip is damaged. Where possible, locate the fault and rectify.


WARNING: Isolate supply before working on any part of the electrical system.
Problem A: Over-current protection (circuit breaker) trips or blows

Locate and rectify the fault and reset or replace protection.
Protection undersized
Re-establish what the current loads are going to be and install new
protection (NB: if protection is replaced, ensure it is compatible
with the supply cable).

Probable causes Correction
Excessive moisture in junction box Dry out and check seal; replace if necessary.
Perform an insulation resistance test.
Earth fault at:

Contactor bouncing Replace with higher quality contactor

Loss of supply current due to over-currentor residual current
