General Notes
Congratulations! You have purchased OCZ Technology’s Cryo-Z, the world’s
most advanced commercially available cooling solution. This manual will walk
you through the general principle of operation and cover all necessary steps of
the installation to ensure problem-free working with your new cooling unit.
1) How does it work?
The Cryo-Z uses a compressor to actively cool the nozzle mounted on your CPU in
order to chill it down to sub-zero temperature. The Cryo-Z uses sophisticated
internal control logic to prevent damage to your system caused by power-outages
or incorrect power-up sequences.
Before the system can be powered up, the Cryo-Z needs to pre-cool the head.Once
the temperature at the CPU reaches -30 centigrade, the control logic allows
power-up of the computer. If for some reason the temperature at the nozzle
increases above 70 centigrade, the Cryo-Z will initiate the shutdown sequence of
the computer to avoid damage from overheating.
In order to achieve these capabilities, the connection between the power button of
the system and the motherboard needs to be routed through the Cryo-Z,please
follow carefully the installation instructions.
2) What precautions are taken against condensation and ice build-up?
Condensation and ice build-up are some major concerns in any cryogenic
environment. To reduce any exposure of cold surfaces to the ambient case air,
every chilled surface of the Cryo-Z has been carefully insulated. In addition, a
heating element is provided to be attached to the back of the motherboard,in
order to prevent condensation behind the motherboard. Please consult the
installation section of this manual for details of installing additional insulation
material and the heating pad.
3) Why does my BIOS hardware monitor show a temperature above zero
degrees when the Cryo-Z displays minus temperatures?
Some Hardware monitors have a fixed lowest temperature that is displayed in the
BIOS irrespective of the actual CPU thermal diode. Please check for BIOS updates
from your motherboard manufacturer.

Place your motherboard bracket on top of the foam and mark
where the screw holes will be. Repeat this with ALL four pieces
of foam (A1, A2, A3 and B1)
Once holes are marked, remove bracket from the foam. Drill holes in
the foam where your markings are.We recommend using a drill bit
(not included) for best results. Repeat with each piece of foam
(A1, A2, A3 and B1)

Motherboard Preparation
The Cryo-Z is a versatile cooling solution that can easily be adapted to the
following platforms using the included brackets:*
A. Socket AM2
B. Socket 478
C. Socket 775

Use this included bracket for AM2
motherboard models. Place the piece of
foam (A-1) between your motherboard
bracket and motherboard. Fully insert the
four 6-32 screws into the bracket and
foam.
Use this included bracket for Socket 775
motherboard models. Place the piece of
foam (A-1) between your motherboard
bracket and motherboard. Fully insert the
four 6-32 screws into the bracket and

Use this included bracket for Socket 478
motherboard models. Place the piece of
foam (A-1) between your motherboard
bracket and motherboard. Fully insert the
four 6-32 screws into the bracket and
foam.

8
Use one piece of foam (A-2) to cut a
shape that fits around the CPU socket on
the motherboard. The arrangement of
surface components is different for every
motherboard, therefore, the exact shape
of the final piece of foam will vary from
one motherboard to the other.
It is not necessary to cut out the entire
length of the CPU-locking lever, a small
cutaway suffices (see arrow).
This is what the foam should look like
when properly installed (see also second
panel above).
Mount the piece of foam over the screws
on the motherboard and, if necessary,
press it down to ensure close contact with
the motherboard.

After installing the bracket underneath the motherboard, you will need to install one
layer of insulation at the top surface of the motherboard.

Please identify the 4-pin Molex connector
for the heating element.
The 4-pin Molex connector needs to be
connected to a free Molex connector
from your power supply unit.

A heating element is included with your
Cryo-Z to prevent condensation build-up
behind the motherboard. Please mount
this heating element to the back of your
motherboard, underneath the CPU socket
(see next page).

Cut a 1.5“- diameter circular hole in the center of the foam (A-3).
Tip: draw diagonal lines to connect the previously drilled screw-holes, this will give you
the exact center of the circular cut-out.This piece of foam will fit exactly over the nozzle
of the Cryo-Z’s copper head. Slide the foam past the retention ring on the nozzle.
Cut a 2.5”-diameter circular hole in the center of the thick foam piece (B).The center can
be determined as described above by diagonally connecting the screw holes. This piece
of foam will slide over the thick portion of the plastic collar.
Note: The circular holes should have a very tight fit for both pieces (A-3) and (B).

13
Start with sliding the thick piece of foam
(B) over the plastic collar of the Cryo-Z.
When both pieces are mounted, they
should be positioned as shown in the
diagram.
After foam (B) is mounted, fit foam (A-3)
over the nozzle of the Cryo-Z’s copper
head. Make sure that the foam is secured
by the retention ring.

Congratulations
If you followed the instructions in this manual, you are ready to power up your
Cryo-Z unit. After a short pre-chill phase indicated by the LCD display on the
front of your unit reaching -30°C, your computer system will automatically
power on. Congratulations! You have successfully installed the OCZ Cryo-Z
CPC Cooler. Enjoy the benefits of sub-zero temperatures for extreme
overclocking.
IMPORTANT NOTE: After the Cryo-Z is powered down, a wait period of 10-15
min is mandatory before it can be powered on again.
