INTRODUCTION
Thank you for selecting the Oregon ScientificTM Handheld
Altimeter with Barometer and Compass (RA123).
The RA123 is a very useful product for any outdoor
activity. Equipped with altimeter, barometer, compass,
temperature, weather forecast, clock and alarm functions
makes it the perfect companion for any user who
wishes to venture into the great outdoors. In addition its
carabineer design allows you to carry it around securely
wherever you go.
IMPORTANT
• The measurement functions built into the RA123 are
not meant to substitute professional measurement
or industrial precision devices. Values produced
by this device should be considered as reasonable
representations only.
• The RA123 carabineer is not designed for mountain
climbing. Always make sure to use a professional
carabineer when mountain climbing. Oregon
ScientificTM will assume no responsibility for any
injuries or fatalities arising from improper use of the
carabineer.
• Oregon ScientificTM assumes no responsibility for
any loss, or any claims by third parties that may arise
through the use of this device.

GETTING STARTED
RA123 uses 2 x CR2032 lithium battery, which has
already been installed. See below for battery warnings.
LOW BATTERY ICON DESCRIPTION
The device battery is low.
NOTE If you need to replace the battery, we highly
recommend you contact the retailer or our customer
service department.
To replace battery:
1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the lid of the
battery compartment.
2. Remove the old battery and insert the new one
matching the polarities.
3. Replace the lid using a Phillips screwdriver, screw
until firmly in place.
NOTE When battery is replaced it is important to re-
calibrate the compass’s magnetic sensor.
NOTE While the low battery icon is displayed,
instant altitude, maximum altitude, air pressure, sea level
pressure, temperature and compass values show “ - - “ . It
will return to normal once battery has been replaced.

TO ACTIVATE BACKLIGHT / KEYPAD LOCK
/ LED LIGHT
Press to turn backlight ON for 3 seconds.
NOTE The backlight and LED functions will not operate
while the low battery icon is displayed and it will
return to normal once battery has been replaced.
To toggle keypad lock ON / OFF:
Press and hold for 2 seconds. indicates
keypad is locked.
To turn on LED light:
Press .
ALTIMETER AND BAROMETER
ABOUT THE ALTIMETER-BAROMETER
The altimeter measures altitude in either metres or feet.
The device is equipped with an intelligent barometer
that determines altitude by the built-in sensor with
the advanced Baro-compensation technology. It also
distinguishes the differences between pressure caused
by the changes in physical altitudes and pressure caused
by weather conditions. This eliminates discrepancies
and makes the altimeter more accurate than most of
the average devices available on the market. Maximum
altitude and instant sea level pressure readings are
also provided.
TO SET AND RESET ALTIMETER
The altitude is automatically measured from the moment
you switch on the device. It will supply you with both
barometer readings as well as the maximum sea level
pressure readings.
To set and reset altimeter:
1. Press ALT / + to navigate to altimeter mode.
2. Press and hold ALT / + to enter settings.
3. Press ALT / + or BARO / - to change setting.
4. Press TIME to confirm and move to the next setting.
The setting options are as follows: adjust altitude;
reset maximum altitude.
5. Press ALT/+; choose NO to keep maximum altitude
recorded or YES to reset memory data. Press TIME
to confirm.
TO SET SEA LEVEL PRESSURE AND
WEATHER FORECAST ICONS
1. Press BARO / - to navigate to barometer mode.
2. Press and hold BARO / - to enter settings.
3. Press ALT / + or BARO / - to change setting.
4. Press TIME to confirm and move to the next setting.

The setting options are as follows: adjust sea level
pressure; toggle weather forecast icons.
5. Press TIME to confirm.
NOTE When sea level pressure is changed, the altitude
will adjust itself accordingly.
TIME MODE
TO SET THE TIME / DATE
1. Press TIME to navigate to Time mode.
2. Press and hold TIME to enter settings.
3. Press ALT / + or BARO / - to change setting.
4. Press TIME to confirm and move to the next setting.
The setting options are as follows: 12 / 24-hour
time; hour; minute; year; day-month / month-day;
month; day; temperature; altitude and barometer
measurement units.
5. Press TIME to confirm.
NOTE If no key is pressed for 30 seconds, the display
will return to previous mode.
TO SET THE ALARM
1. Press TIME to navigate to Alarm mode.
2. Press and hold TIME to enter settings.
3. Press ALT / + or BARO / - to change setting.
4. Press TIME to confirm and move to the next setting.
The setting options are as follows: hour; minute; alarm
ON / OFF.
5. Press TIME to confirm.
indicates that the alarm has been activated.
NOTE When the alarm clock is activated, it will sound
at the set time every day. Press any button to stop the
alarm for that day. The alarm clock is still active and will
set off again the following day.
COMPASS
ABOUT THE COMPASS
The compass shows the bearing in degrees due North
together with 16 cardinal points. The out circumference of the
display consists of 16 arrows that graphically indicate North.
The last lit segment indicates North as shown below.

TO VIEW COMPASS
• Press COMPASS to navigate to the Compass
mode.
NOTE The compass display is active for 30 seconds at
a time. After this, the display will go back to the previous
mode.
NOTE Always take bearings in the open air, not inside
buildings, tents, caves, or other shelters.
NOTE Compass readings should be performed
away from magnetic materials. Avoid large magnetic
objects, power lines, loudspeakers, electric motors
etc.
COMPASS SENSOR CALIBRATION
Before the compass is first used, we recommend that
you calibrate the compass sensor.
To calibrate the compass sensor:
1. Press COMPASS to navigate to the Compass
mode.
2. Press and hold COMPASS to enter settings mode.
3. Press ALT / + or BARO / - to navigate to Calibration
mode.
4. Press TIME to begin calibration of the compass.
5. Rotate the watch counter clockwise at the same speed
as the moving segments around the circumference
of the display. The rotation will be finished once you
have performed 1 1⁄4 turns and the display will appear
as shown below:

When you set the declination angle on the compass you
compensate for the difference between true and magnetic
north. This makes the compass reading more accurate.
To set the declination angle:
1. Press COMPASS to navigate to Compass mode.
2. Press and hold COMPASS to enter settings mode.
3. Press ALT / + or BARO / - to navigate to Declination
mode.
4. Press TIME to confirm and move to the next setting.
5. Press ALT / + or BARO / - to change setting. The setting
options are as follows: ON / OFF; WEST/EAST (only if
ON is selected); degree of declination angle.
6. Press TIME to confirm.
NOTE The compass should be calibrated:
• Before you use it for the first time.
• When the battery is replaced.
• Before you leave for an extended outdoor activity.
• Whenever it is exposed to strong magnetic sources,
extreme cold, or you suspect that other environmental
conditions have affected the compass readings.
• If you notice that the compass is not showing the
direction correctly.
DECLINATION ANGLE
Declination is the angle between where a compass
needle points (magnetic North Pole) and the true North
Pole. The declination angle can vary from 0-30 degrees
East (E) or West (W) and can be found on most maps
or on the Internet.

TIP Press COMPASS anytime to quickly exit.
TRUE NORTH CALIBRATION
When you do not know the declination angle, the true north
calibration function can be used to compensate for the
difference between magnetic and true north. All you need
to know is the direction of true north (this can be found from
landmarks in your immediate vicinity). Setting the true north
calibration makes the compass reading more accurate.
To set True North calibration:
1. Press and hold COMPASS to enter settings mode.
2. Press ALT / + or BARO / - to navigate to North mode.
3. Press TIME to confirm and move to the next setting.
4. Press ALT / + or BARO / - to change setting. The
setting options are as follows: ON / OFF; point to true
north.
5. Press TIME to confirm.
NOTE If the declination angle is turned ON, the True north
function will automatically turn itself OFF and vice-versa.
TIP Press COMPASS anytime to quickly exit.

Gracias por elegir el altímetro de mano con barómetro y
brújula de Oregon ScientificTM (RA123). El RA123 es un
producto muy útil para cualquier actividad al aire libre.
Dispone de altímetro, barómetro, brújula, termómetro,
función de previsión meteorológica, reloj y alarma, lo
cual le convierte en el acompañante perfecto para quien
quiera aventurarse por el ancho mundo. Además, su
diseño permite llevarlo cómodamente allá donde vaya.

• Las funciones de medición del RA123 no están
pensadas para sustituir mediciones profesionales
ni dispositivos de precisión industrial. Los valores

PARA EMPEZAR
CÓMO ENCENDER POR PRIMERA VEZ
Pulse TIME y manténgalo pulsado hasta que se active
la pantalla LCD.

2. Retire la pila vieja e introduzca la nueva cuidando de
que las polaridades coincidan.
3. Vuelva a colocar la tapa con un destornillador y
atorníllela de modo que quede fija.
NOTA Al cambiar las pilas es importante recalibrar el
sensor magnético de la brújula.
NOTA Cuando se muestra el icono de pila gastada
la altitud instantánea, altitud máxima, presión del aire,
presión del aire sobre el nivel del mar, temperatura y
brújula mostrarán “ - - “ . Una vez cambie la pila, volverá
a la normalidad.

ALTÍMETRO Y BARÓMETRO
ACERCA DEL ALTÍMETRO-BARÓMETRO
El altímetro mide la altitud en metros o pies. El
dispositivo va equipado con un barómetro inteligente
que determina la altitud mediante el sensor incorporado
con la tecnología de compensación barométrica
avanzada. También distingue las diferencias entre
presión provocada por cambios en altitudes físicas y las
presiones provocadas por condiciones meteorológicas.
Así se eliminan discrepancias y el altímetro es más
preciso que la mayoría de dispositivos del mercado.
También ofrece lecturas de presión a nivel de mar y
altitud máxima.
CÓMO CONFIGURAR Y REINICIAR ALTÍMETRO
Normalmente la altitud se mide desde el momento en
que ponga en marcha el dispositivo. Le ofrecerá lecturas
barométricas y las lecturas máximas de presión a nivel
del mar.
Cómo configurar y reiniciar el altímetro:
1. Pulse ALT / + para desplazarse por el Modo altímetro.
2. Pulse ALT / + y manténgalo pulsado para introducir ajustes.
3. Pulse ALT / + o BARO / - para modificar la configuración.

4. Pulse TIME para confirmar y pasar a la siguiente
opción. Las opciones de configuración son las
siguientes: ajustar altitud, reiniciar altitud máxima.
5. Pulse ALT/+; elija NO para que se guarde la altitud
máxima o SÍ para reiniciar los datos de memoria.
Pulse TIME para confirmar.
CÓMO CONFIGURAR PRESIÓN A NIVEL
DEL MAR E ICONOS DE PREVISIÓN
METEOROLÓGICA
1. Pulse BARO / - para acceder al Modo barómetro.
2. Pulse BARO / - y manténgalo pulsado para acceder
al modo de ajuste.
3. Pulse ALT / + o BARO / - para modificar la
configuración.
4. Pulse TIME para confirmar y pasar a la siguiente
opción. Las opciones de configuración son las
siguientes: ajuste de presión a nivel del mar; alternar
iconos de previsión meteorológica.
5. Pulse TIME para confirmar.
NOTA Cuando cambie la presión a nivel del mar, la
altitud se ajustará automáticamente.
MODO HORA
CÓMO CONFIGURAR HORA / FECHA
1. Pulse TIME para acceder al Modo hora.
2. Pulse TIME y manténgalo pulsado para acceder al
modo de ajuste.
3. Pulse ALT / + o BARO / - para modificar la
configuración.
4. Pulse TIME para confirmar y pasar a la siguiente
opción. Las opciones de configuración son las
siguientes: Formato de 12 ó 24 horas; hora; minuto;
año; formato día / mes y día; mes; día; temperatura;
altitud y unidades de medición barométrica.
5. Pulse TIME para confirmar.
NOTA Si no se pulsa ninguna tecla durante 30
segundos, la pantalla volverá al modo anterior.
CÓMO CONFIGURAR LA ALARMA
1. Pulse TIME para acceder al Modo alarma.
2. Pulse TIME y manténgalo pulsado para acceder al
modo de ajuste.
3. Pulse ALT / + o BARO / - para modificar la
configuración.
4. Pulse TIME para confirmar y pasar a la siguiente
opción. Las opciones de configuración son
las siguientes: hora; minuto; alarma activada /
desactivada.
5. Pulse TIME para confirmar.
indica que la alarma está activada.
NOTA Cuando la alarma esté activada, sonará todos los

días a la hora configurada. Pulse cualquier botón para que
la alarma no vuelva a sonar ese día. El despertador sigue
activo y volverá a sonar a la misma hora el día siguiente.
BRÚJULA
ACERCA DE LA BRÚJULA
La brújula muestra la marcación en grados hacia el norte
con 16 puntos cardinales. La circunferencia exterior de
la pantalla consiste en 16 flechas que señalan el norte
gráficamente. El último segmento iluminado indica el
norte, tal y como se muestra a continuación.
CÓMO VER LA BRÚJULA
• Pulse COMPASS para acceder al Modo brújula.
NOTA La pantalla de brújula estará activa durante 30
segundos cada vez. Después de esto la pantalla volverá
al modo anterior.
NOTA Tome las marcaciones siempre al aire libre, y no
dentro de edificios, tiendas, cuevas u otros refugios.
NOTA Las lecturas de la brújula no deben hacerse en
las inmediaciones de materiales magnéticos. Evite los
objetos grandes y pesados, las líneas de alta tensión,
los altavoces, motores eléctricos, etc.
CALIBRACIÓN DEL SENSOR DE LA BRÚJULA
Antes de usar la brújula por primera vez, le recomendamos
que calibre el sensor de la brújula.
Para calibrar el sensor de la brújula:
1. Pulse COMPASS para acceder al Modo brújula.
2. Pulse COMPASS y manténgalo pulsado para
acceder al modo de configuración.
3. Pulse ALT / + para desplazarse por el Modo de
calibración.

4. Pulse TIME para empezar a calibrar la brújula.
5. Haga girar el contador del reloj en la dirección de
las agujas del reloj a la misma velocidad que los
segmentos móviles alrededor de la circunferencia de
la pantalla. La rotación se acabará en cuanto haya
dado 1 1/4 vueltas y la pantalla aparezca así:
NOTA Debería calibrar la brújula:
• Antes de usarlo por primera vez.
• Cuando se cambia la pila.
• Antes de ir a hacer una larga actividad al aire libre.
• Siempre que esté expuesto a campos magnéticos
fuertes, frío intenso o si sospecha que alguna otra
condición del entorno ha afectado a las lecturas de
la brújula.
• Si se da cuenta de que la brújula no muestra
correctamente la dirección.
ÁNGULO DE DECLINACIÓN
La declinación es el ángulo entre el lugar al cual señala
la aguja de la brújula (polo norte magnético) y el polo
norte geográfico. El ángulo de inclinación puede variar
entre 0 y 30 grados hacia el ese (E) o el oeste (W) y se
puede encontrar en la mayoría de mapas o en internet.
Introduciendo el ángulo de declinación en la brújula se
compensa la diferencia entre el polo norte magnético y el
geográfico. Así las lecturas de la brújula son más fiables.
Para configurar el ángulo de declinación:
1. Pulse COMPASS para acceder al Modo brújula.
2. Pulse COMPASS y manténgalo pulsado para
acceder al modo de configuración.
3. Pulse ALT / + para desplazarse por el Modo de
declinación.

4. Pulse TIME para confirmar y pasar a la siguiente
opción.
5. Pulse ALT / + o BARO / - para modificar la
configuración. Las opciones de configuración son
las siguientes: ON / OFF; WEST/EAST (sólo si se
elige ON); grado de ángulo de inclinación.
6. Pulse TIME para confirmar.

CALIBRACIÓN DEL NORTE GEOGRÁFICO
Si no sabe el ángulo de declinación, puede utilizar
la función del norte geográfico para compensar la
diferencia entre el polo norte magnético y el geográfico.
Lo único que necesita es saber la diferencia con el norte
geográfico (que podrá encontrar en hitos a su alrededor).
Con la calibración del norte geográfico las lecturas de la
brújula son más fiables.
Para configurar la calibración del norte geográfico:
1. Pulse COMPASS y manténgalo pulsado para
acceder al modo de configuración.
2. Pulse ALT / + o BARO / - para desplazarse por el
Modo de norte geográfico.
3. Pulse TIME para confirmar y pasar a la siguiente
opción.
4. Pulse ALT / + o BARO / - para modificar la
configuración. Las opciones de configuración son las
siguientes: ON / OFF; apuntar a norte verdadero.
5. Pulse TIME para confirmar.
NOTA Si el ángulo de declinación está activado, la función
de norte geográfica se apagará a sí misma, y al revés.
