The purpose of this manual is to explain how to use Orion
HandyAVI SE software to broadcast live views over the
internet using the Orion AllSky Camera II.
The Orion Video Capture Device (included with the AllSky Camera II) is compat-
ible with many useful software applications such as Handy AVI, UFO capture
and online streaming services. Search the web for “free online video streaming
and broadcasting”.
Many website creation tools give the user an option to load a particular still
image or recorded movie for inclusion onto a personal website. This is by far the
easiest method, but to broadcast a real-time live view, a personal website with
standard FTP features will need to be used.
Please read the Orion AllSky Camera II manual and HandyAVI SE manual first
before proceeding.
Automatically adding Live Images to
Personal Websites
The simplest method to show your local sky to others via the World Wide Web is
to setup Orion HandyAVI software to automatically take a single image (in bmp
or jpg format) periodically and then automatically send that image via FTP (File
Transfer Protocol) to a location on your website.
This efficient method will only take up the amount of hard drive space for a
single image on user’s web site since an updated image will replace the previous
one.
The frequency of image transfer can be tuned according to users internet speed
for best results.
The actual webpage itself (HTML) can periodically update the image so that
users do not need to press the refresh button.
This is the preferred method of using the Orion AllSky Camera II to view live
weather conditions at remote locations such as an observatory.
How to Set Up HandyAVI SE Software to FTP an Image
Select Time-Lapse Capture and set option to take one frame periodically – in
this example one frame taken every 60 seconds
Next click Setup FTP to enter your specific FTP information for your website. You
may need to speak with your service provider if you do not know how to setup
your website to use an FTP account.
Enter Server name, User name, Password, Port number (normally 21) and
remote directory. Click the Test Button to upload a test file and check that all
information has been entered correctly.

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="60" >
<img src="timelapse.jpg" />
Line 1 – Sets the automatic refresh of webpage to refresh itself every 60 sec-
onds (load latest image). This should be same as the frequency of image cap-
ture settings (or longer to prevent updating an image at same time it is being
displayed).
Line 2 – Setup to display an image named “timelapse.jpg”
You should now have HandyAVI running automatically and have a webpage cre-
ated to load the FTP image periodically.
Note the checkbox for Active or
Passive – Some ISPs are blocking
“Active” connections. Check this box
to change to “Passive” if you need a
“Passive” connection.
Select checkbox to tell Orion
HandyAVI to upload a JPEG image file
and call it timelapse.jpg
Go to preferences and select recycle
files option. In order to run 24/7 365
days a week continually to keep
uploading image files “Recycle files”
should be used to avoid running out of
disk space (since AVI files will still be
created when capturing still images so
we will recycle the AVI files).
Press Start to begin capturing images periodically and transfer them automati-
cally to your website.
You would now need to have a webpage setup that would include the FTP
image.
For example a simple HTML page only needs to include the following
commands:
Figure 2.
Figure 3.
Figure 4.

This method should provide an automatic upload of images continuously year
round.
• Embedded Movies
Previously captured movies (AVI’s) can be embedded into web pages.
This method may not work in all browsers.
For best results conversion of AVI to FLV (flash) has been seen to be the
most compatible solution for all browsers. This requires knowledge and
purchase of Adobe’s flash tools.
• Meteor Detection
HandyAVI SE allows meteor detection software to either FTP or email the
results of a meteor detection (images or movie).
Please read HandyAVI SE manual for details.
