SnapServer®2000 Series/REO®4600
Replacing/Installing a PCIe Card
ATTENTION!: There are static-sensitive electronics inside the
unit. Before you handle any parts, make sure you are working
at a static-controlled workstation and that you are properly
grounded.
Depending on your server model, the SnapServer®2000
Series of rack mount products includes, or can be
upgraded to include, the following PCIe cards:
•RAID Controller Card
•Journal Drive/Battery Backup Unit (BBU) Card
•SAS UIO Module
•Parallel SCSI Card
•Ethernet Card
The REO®4600 appliance includes, or can be upgraded
to include, the following PCIe cards:
•RAID Controller Card
•Hardware Compression Card
•Fibre Channel Card
•Ethernet Card
Contents of this Replacement/
Installation Card Procedure
This procedure provides the following instructions to
replace or install the cards listed above:
1. “Shut Down the Server.”

Shut Down the Server
CAUTION: Shut down the server before you make any repairs.
Improper shutdown may lead to physical harm or loss of data.
CAUTION: On a SnapServer SAN S2000, be sure all active
initiator connections are disconnected before shutting down
the server.
1. To start the shutdown process,
push the power button on the
front left flange of the server
briefly, then release.
2. Wait until the power LED is off,
then disconnect the AC power
cord and all other cables from
the back of the server.
NOTE: It may take one or two
minutes for the server to completely shut down.
3. The server is heavy. With the help of another person,
remove the server from the rack to a clean surface
with ample room to the front and rear. See the Rack
Installation procedure for instructions on removing
the server from the rack.
Remove the Chassis Cover
1. To release the cover, press the buttons on the top of
the cover with both thumbs (see Figure 1).

2. Slide the cover back, then lift it off the rear of the
server and set it aside.

Replace a PCIe Card
Locate the Card to be Replaced
1. Facing the front of the unit, locate the riser card to the
left of the heat sink (see Figure 2).

2. The PCIe cards plug into the 4 slots on the riser card
in the following order.
•On a SnapServer SAN S2000, the Journal Drive/
Battery Backup Unit card is always in the bottom
slot and the RAID Controller is in the slot directly
above it.
•On a SnapServer NAS N2000, the SAS UIO
module is always in the bottom slot.
•On a REO 4600, the Hardware Compression card
(if installed) is always in the top slot.
•All other cards can be installed in any available
slot.
Replace a RAID Controller (REO 4600 only),
Hardware Compression, Fibre Channel, Parallel
SCSI, or Ethernet Card
1. Disconnect any external cables and remove any cards
above the card you want to replace.
2. On the rear of the server, release the latch holding the
card bracket in place (see Figure 3).

3. Pull the card free from the riser card slot and set
aside.
4. Insert the new card, positioning the bracket into the
bracket slot tongue-end first, and pushing the card
into the riser slot until it snaps into place.
5. Close the bracket latch, making sure the bracket end
fits within the latch.
6. Replace any cards you removed and reconnect any
external cables.
Replace a SAS UIO Module (SnapServer NAS
N2000 only)
1. Disconnect any external cables, and remove any cards
in the top three slots by releasing the latch holding
the card bracket in place (refer to Figure 3) and
pulling the card free from the riser card slot.
2. Press the latch on either side of the SAS connector
and unplug the SAS cable from the card (see
Figure 4).

3. Release the latch on the rear of the server, holding the
module bracket in place (refer to Figure 3).
4. Pull the module free from the riser card slot and set
aside.
5. Insert the new SAS UIO module, positioning the
bracket tongue-end first into the bracket slot and
pushing the card into the riser slot until it snaps into
place.
6. Plug the SAS cable into the connector on the new SAS
UIO module.
7. Close the bracket latch, making sure the bracket end
fits within the latch.
8. Replace any cards you removed and reconnect any
external cables.

Replace a RAID Controller (SnapServer SAN
S2000 only)
1. Disconnect any external cables, and remove any cards
in the top two slots by releasing the latch holding the
card bracket in place (refer to Figure 3) and pulling
the card free from the riser card slot.
2. Disconnect the SAS cable from the RAID Controller
and the cable connecting the Controller to the Battery
Backup Unit (see Figure 5).

3. Remove the RAID card by releasing the latch holding
the card’s bracket in place (refer to Figure 3) and
pulling the card free from the riser card slot.
4. Insert the new RAID Controller into the slot directly
above the Journal Drive/Battery Backup Unit
Assembly, positioning the bracket tongue-end first
into the bracket slot and then pushing the card into
the riser slot until it snaps into place. Close the
bracket latch (refer to Figure 3), making sure the
bracket end fits within the latch.
5. Reattach the SAS and BBU cables, making sure the
SAS cable is inserted in the connector closest to the
riser card (refer to Figure 5).
6. Replace any cards you removed and reattach any
external cables.
Replace the Journal Drive/BBU Assembly
(SnapServer SAN S2000 only)
NOTE: The new Battery Backup Unit will require 24 hours to fully
charge. The BBU will begin charging as soon as the server is
powered on.
1. Follow Steps 1 through 3 in the “Replace a RAID
Controller (SnapServer SAN S2000 only)” procedure
to remove all cards above the Journal Drive/BBU
Assembly.
2. Disconnect the Journal Drive SATA and the Power
cables at the card connectors (see Figure 6).

3. Remove the two Phillips screws securing the card
assembly to the bottom of the chassis (see Figure 7).

4. Release the latch holding the card’s bracket in place
(refer to Figure 3) and pull the card free from the riser
card slot.
5. Install the new Journal Drive/Battery Backup Unit
Assembly:
a. Insert the card, positioning the bracket tongue-end
first into the bracket slot and pushing the card into
the riser slot until it snaps into place. Close the
bracket latch (refer to Figure 3), making sure the
bracket end fits within the latch.
b. Using the two screws you removed from the old
assembly, secure the Journal Drive/BBU card to
the chassis.
c. Reconnect the SATA and power cables to the card
(refer to Figure 6).
6. Follow Steps 4 through 6 in the “Replace a RAID
Controller (SnapServer SAN S2000 only)” procedure
to reinstall the RAID Controller and any other cards
you removed.
7. In the UI, add the new Journal Drive by selecting the
Replicant tab, and clicking the Add button. You
should see the new drive added successfully.

Install a New PCIe Card
Depending on the your server model, you can upgrade
the SnapServer 2000 Series or the REO 4600 to include
the following:
•Ethernet Card
•Parallel SCSI Card (SnapServer N2000 only)
•Hardware Compression Card (REO 4600 only)
•Fibre Channel Card (REO 4600 only)
1. Locate an available slot on the riser card (refer to
Figure 2).
2. If there are PCIe cards installed above the available
slot, you will need to remove those cards before
installing the new card. See “Replace a RAID
Controller (REO 4600 only), Hardware Compression,
Fibre Channel, Parallel SCSI, or Ethernet Card” for
removal instructions.
IMPORTANT: If you are installing a Hardware Compression
card, it must be installed in the top slot of the riser card. If a
card is already installed in the top slot, remove it and install
it in a lower slot.
3. On the rear of the server, release the latch and
remove the blank from the slot where you will insert
the card bracket (refer to Figure 3).
4. Insert the new card, positioning the bracket tongue-
end first into the bracket slot and pushing the card
into the riser slot until it snaps into place.
5. Close the bracket latch, making sure the bracket end
fits within the latch.
6. Replace any cards you removed from the upper slots
and reconnect any external cables.
7. (REO 4600 only) If you have just installed a fibre
channel card, connect external FC Port 0 (left port) to
your backup server, switch, or hub. For additional
connectivity, connect external FC Port 1 (right port)
to a virtual tape library, switch, or hub.
Replace the Chassis Cover
CAUTION: Be sure to replace the top cover. Do not operate the
server if the top cover is not in place.
1. Lower the top cover onto the server.
2. From the rear of the server, push the cover forward
until it is firmly seated.
Restore Power to the Server
1. If you removed the server from the rack, replace it
now with the help of another person.
2. Reattach all cables to the rear of the server.
3. Press the power button on the front of the server.
Verify Hardware Compression Status
(REO 4600 Only)
If you installed a new Hardware Compression card,
verify that it is recognized and operational.
1. Open the UI in a browser and log in.
2. On the System Summary page, the Hardware
Compression entry should be shown as Configured,
Operational (see Figure 8).

Return Removed Parts to Overland
1. Place the removed part in the anti-static bag and put
it in the replacement part’s box.
2. Return the old part to Overland Storage.
