The Snap Server®14000 Motherboard Tray Assembly
These instructions explain how to replace the motherboard tray assembly on the
Snap Server.
Replacement Part Inventory
Before you begin, make sure you have the following items from the package
containing the motherboard tray assembly:
• The motherboard PCA with DIMM, CPU, and mounting tray in an anti-static bag
• Server ID label
Tools Required
• Phillips screwdriver
Overview of the Procedure
To remove and replace the motherboard tray assembly, you perform the following
tasks:
• Shut down the server and disconnect the power cords and SCSI and Ethernet
connectors
• Remove the old motherboard tray assembly
• Remove the SCSI and Ethernet cards from the old motherboard
• Install the SCSI and Ethernet cards on the new motherboard
• Insert the new motherboard tray assembly
• Reattach the power cords and SCSI and Ethernet connectors
• Restart the server

Shutting Down the Server
1Shut down the server.
Caution Shut down the server before you make any repairs. Improper shutdown may
lead to loss of data or physical harm.
2Turn off the power modules.
Make sure the switch on each power module is in the off position.
3Disconnect the AC power cords from the back of the server.
4Disconnect the SCSI and Ethernet connectors.
Removing the Motherboard Tray Assembly
1At the back of the server, loosen the 2 thumbscrews on either side of the
motherboard tray assembly.
2Pull the motherboard tray assembly out of the server.
3Place the motherboard tray assembly on a grounded, padded surface.

Removing the SCSI and Ethernet Cards from the Old Motherboard Tray
Assembly
1Unscrew the top screw that attaches the SCSI card bracket to the motherboard
tray.
Set the screw aside in a safe place. You use it later to attach the SCSI card bracket
to the new motherboard tray assembly.
2Remove the SCSI card.
3Repeat steps 1 and 2 to remove the Ethernet card from the inner slot.

Installing the SCSI and Ethernet Cards on the New Motherboard Tray
Assembly
1Insert the Ethernet card into the inner slot on the motherboard.
Press firmly to be sure the card is seated properly in its slot. Avoid contact with
metal surfaces on the card. Grasp or press the edges only.
2Replace and tighten the screw connecting the Ethernet card bracket to the
motherboard tray.
3Repeat steps 1 and 2 to install the SCSI card into the outer slot.
Installing the New Motherboard Tray Assembly
1Slide the motherboard tray assembly back into the server.
2Tighten the 2 thumbscrews on the motherboard tray assembly.
Reattaching the Power Cords and SCSI and Ethernet Connectors
1Make sure the switch on each power
module is in the off position.
2Reconnect the AC power cords and SCSI
and Ethernet connectors to the back of
the server.
3Turn on the power modules.
Restarting the Server
Once you have completed the replacement procedure, you must restart the system.
Note At this point, the server has lost its static IP address, administrator name and
password, and server name. For assistance in recovering the customer’s
configuration and settings, contact Overland Storage Technical Support.
