Refractometers
The PCE series are developed for working with sugar related liquids (fruit juices, honey, soft drinks, wine), and
help monitor and control sugar concentrations in foods and beverages. Whether users are checking the
“ripeness” of fruit in the field, verifying product quality after harvesting, or controlling concentrations during
processing and packaging, refractometers provide critical information to ensure product quality. It is also
commonly used for controlling the concentration of various industrial fluids (cutting lubricants and flux rinsing
compounds). Which model is to be chosen according to the concentration in the liquids and the parameter of
refractometer.

Operation
Before using the flap cover the prism has to be cleaned carefully. Now dip 1-2 drops of the liquid on the prism.
When you close the prism the sample will spread between the cover and prism. To place the sample on the
main prism you can use a pipette. Please make sure that there are no air bubbles, this would increase your
measuring result. Through smooth moving of the cover the sample can spread evenly.
Now hold the refractometer against the daylight, through the eyepiece you can see now the scale. The worth
has to be read between the bright-dark boundar
ry. By turning the adjustment you can focus the scale if needed.
To prevent deposition on the prism and the cover this device should be cleaned and desiccated after every
measuring procedure.

Calibration (please note: avoid skin- and eye contact with the calibration solution)
Please clean this instrument before using the calibration solution. Open the daylight plate and add 2-3 drops
sugar solution 58%-90% (available at the pharmacy) on the prism. Now press the little glass plate (delivered in
brown paper) on top of the solution. The solution has to spread ( without bubbles). Now wait for about 30
seconds. Hold the refractometer with opened dayligh
t plate towards the daylight and look through the eyepiece.
You will now see the scale and a “white-blue” boundary area (parting line). The parting line should be exact at
78,78 brix. If it is not so, please take of the black cover of the calibrating screw. Now turn the screw (with the
delivered screwdriver) until the parting line is exact on 78,8. After you have done that please put the black cover
back on the screw and clean the prism and the glass.
Attention: Your skin shouldn´t come in contact with the calibration solution. Keep away from your eyes. If it comes in touch with
your eyes please contact a doctor.
Note: This instrument comes calibrated
Important information:
-The daylight plate and the prism must be clean.
-Avoid marks on the prism and the daylight plate. This can affect the measurement negative.
- o not use strong or aggressive cleaner. Please use a damp cloth.
-Clean this device with a damp cloth. o no tput this instrument into water as moisture can get into it.
-Prevent violations and proposals. It could damage this device.
- Store this item in a dry place.
