Electrical Safety
Risk of electric shock. Can shock, burn or
kill. All wiring should be done by a qualified electrician.

• MeetNationalElectricalCodeandlocalcodesfor
allwiring.

General Safety
Risk of explosion. The pump body may
explode if used to boost pressure above the pressures
shown in Specifications. Do not use this pump with inlet
pressure greater than 70 psi (483 kPa). If not already in
the piping system, install a pressure relief valve in the
pump discharge line capable of passing the full pump
flow at maximum rated pressure. If local code requires
installation of a pressure relief valve capable of handling
the full pump flow at a pressure less than 100 psi
(689kPa), follow the code requirements.
Risk of fire or explosion. To avoid risk of
fire and explosion, Pump Water Only with this pump. Do
not pump salt water, flammable liquids or chemicals. Do
not use the pump near gas pilot lights or where chemical
or gas fumes are present. Use of an electric pump with
liquids other than water or in an atmosphere containing
chemical or gas fumes may ignite those liquids or
gases and cause injury or death due to an explosion
and/orfire.
Heavy parts.NEVERwalkorreachundera
suspended pump.
• DONOTscrewaneyeboltintothemotorhousing
and attempt to lift assembly! The lifting point built
into the motor case is not designed to support the
combined weight of the motor and pump.
• Thecraneorhoistmusthaveacapacityinexcessof
the combined weight of the motor and pump.
Risk of burns. If water is trapped in the pump
during operation it may turn to steam. Trapped steam
canleadtoanexplosionandburns.Neverrunthepump
with the outlet closed or obstructed.
Risk of freezing. Do not allow pump, piping,
or any other system component containing water to
freeze.Freezingmaydamagesystem,leadingtoinjuryor
flooding. Allowing pump or system components to freeze
will void warranty.
Nottobeusedbypersons(includingchildren)
having diminished capacity or a lack of experience
unless they have been given supervision
orinstruction.
Children must be supervised to ensure that they do
not play with the appliance.
Only service agent or qualified person should
replace power cord to avoid injury.
A complete power disconnect switch must be
incorporated in the fixed wiring.
Pump approved liquids only with this pump.
Periodically inspect pump and system components.
Wear safety glasses at all times when working on pumps.
Keep work area clean, uncluttered and properly lighted;
store properly all unused tools and equipment.
Keep visitors at a safe distance from the work areas.
Makeworkshopschildproof;usepadlocksandmaster
switches; remove starter keys.

Our warranty will not apply to any product that, in our sole judgement, has been subject to negligence, misapplication, improper
installation, or improper maintenance. Without limiting the foregoing, operating a three phase motor with single phase power

Motor / Pump Lifting Procedure:
Heavy parts.NEVERwalkorreachundera
suspendedpump.DONOTscrewaneyeboltintothe
motor housing and attempt to lift assembly!
The crane or hoist must have a capacity in excess of
the combined weight of the motor and pump. Use a
minimum of two chains or straps to lift motor/pump
assembly.Eachchainorstrapmusthaveacapacityin
excess of the combined weight of the motor and pump.
Raisemotor/pumpassemblyslowlytoensurethatthe
chains or straps will not slip when put under tension.
Balancemotorandpumpwithchainsorstrapsto
maintain proper weight distribution. If not balanced,
release tension on the chains or straps and readjust.
Location
Locatethepumpasnearthewatersourceaspractical.
Makethepiperunasshortandstraightaspossible,
especiallyifasuctionliftisrequired.SeeFigure1fora
typical installation.
Careful attention should be taken to assure that net
positivesuctionheadavailable(NPSHA)exceedsnet
positivesuctionheadrequired(NPSHR)bythepump
or reduced performance and severe pump damage may
result.Ifindoubt,checkwithyournearestSta-Rite
professional dealer. Install pump in a clean, dry and
drained location readily accessible for inspection and
maintenance. Provide ample ventilation.

Piping - General
Support both suction and discharge piping independently
at a point near the pump to avoid putting a strain on the
pump housing. Start all piping at the pump.
Increase pipe diameter at both the suction and discharge
by one (1) standard pipe size (minimum) to obtain
desiredpressureandflowrate.RefertoTableIIwhen
sizing pipe for your pumping system.
NOTICE Do not use pipe with smaller diameter on the
suction side of pump.

and fittings for your suction connection.
Discharge Piping
Increase pipe size from pump tapping as show in
TableII. Install tee with priming plug as close to pump
aspossible.PleaseexamineFigure1carefullybefore
making discharge connection.

See Table III for recommended fusing and wiring data.
Electrical Connection
Risk of electric shock. Can shock, burn or
kill. All wiring should be done by a qualified electrician.
• Disconnectpowertopumpbeforeservicing.
• Checkvoltageandphasestampedonpumpmotor
nameplatebeforewiring.Besuretheyagree
withyourelectriccurrentsupply.TheyMUST
be the same. If in doubt, check with your local
powercompany.
• Checkalllocalelectricalcodespriortoinstallation.
• Threephasemotorsrequiremagneticstarters.
Check Rotation:
Beforepumpisputintooperation,rotationaldirection
must be checked to assure proper performance of pump.
Direction of pump rotation is determined by viewing
liquid end of pump from the back or shaft side, and not
from looking into the impeller eye or front of volute case.
Risk of electric shock. Can shock, burn or
kill. Disconnect power to pump before servicing. Do not
attempt any wiring changes without first disconnecting
power to pump.
• Three Phase Motors:Ifpumprunsbackwards,
reverse any two leads coming off incoming power
(L1,L2,L3)untilproperrotationisobtained.Reverse
L1andL2,orL2andL3,orL1andL3.
• Pump running backward - Centrifugal pumps
willstillpumpliquids,however,GPMandhead
(discharge pressure) will be a fraction of the
published performance.
NOTICE A motor protection device must be installed for
all three-phase pump motors.

Priming The Pump
A pump is primed when all air in the suction line and
pump volute has been evacuated and replaced with
water. A self priming pump only needs to be manually
primed at the first start-up. Once primed, under normal
conditions the pump will reprime automatically at each
subsequent start-up.
To prime, remove plug from top of pump case or priming
teeandfillcasewithwater.Replaceplugandstartpump.
Unit is equipped with a flapper type check valve which
will open at start-up and allow pump to evacuate air
from the suction line. After several minutes of operation,
pump will be fully primed and pumping water. Priming
time will vary depending on length and diameter of
suction line.
Risk of explosion and scalding.Neverrun
pump against closed discharge. To do so can boil water
inside pump, causing hazardous pressure buildup and
possible explosion.
Risk of burns.Motornormallyoperates
at high temperature and will be too hot to touch. It is
protected from heat damage during operation by an
automaticinternalcutoffswitch.Beforehandlingpump
or motor, stop motor and allow it to cool for 20 minutes.
Risk of flooding. Do not run the pump dry.
This will damage mechanical seal and void warranty.
Starting:
Risk of burns.Neverrunpumpdry.Running
pump without water will overheat pump and damage
internal parts.
Turn on power to pump. Slowly open discharge valve
until desired flow rate is achieved. If equipped, place the
“Hand-Off-Auto”selectorswitchinthe“Auto”position.
The pump will be started automatically when the pilot
device signals the motorstarter.
Stopping:
Pump will stop automatically when the pilot device
de-energizesthemotorstarter.Turnthe“Hand-Off-Auto”
selectorswitchto“Off”positionifyouwanttostopthe
pump while it is running.
NOTICE Do not start or run pump dry or damage to the
mechanical seal will result.
• Wearsafetyglassesatalltimeswhenworking
onpumps.
• Donotallowpumporanysystemcomponentto
freeze. To do so will void warranty.
• Periodicallyinspectpumpandsystemcomponents.
Maintenance
Littleornomaintenancetopumpisrequiredotherthan
possible replacement of shaft seal after a reasonable
period of operation (see Troubleshooting).
If required, lubricate motor according to motor
manufacturer’sinstructions.
Pump Storage
Drain pump to prevent freeze damage.
Keep motor dry and loosely covered. Do not wrap with
plastic sheeting; trapped moisture could cause corrosion
or insulation deterioration.
NOTICE A good rust inhibitor in the liquid end
of cast iron pumps is recommended to prevent
excessivecorrosion.
Pump Start-Up After Storage
Replacealldrainplugsandclosealldrainvalvesin
system.Besureallconnectionsaretightlysealed.
After initial check is made, fill pump according to
Priming The Pump.
Shaft Seal Replacement
Risk of electric shock. Can shock, burn or
kill.Besureunitisgroundedandpowerdisconnected
before attempting any work on pump or motor.
NOTICE The highly polished and lapped faces of the seal
areeasilydamaged.Followinstructionsandhandlethe
seal with care.
Removal Of Old Seal
RefertoFigure3forsealpartsidentification.
1. Disconnect all power to pump.
2. Close isolation valves to cut pump off from system.
3. Drain pump; be sure to vent pump.
4. Removemotorholddownboltsandboltsholding
adapter/sealplate(Ref.6,Repair Parts) to pump
body(Ref.20).Slidemotor,adapter/sealplateand
impeller(Ref.12)backwardtoclearpumpbody.

5. Removeimpellerscrewandwasherfromendofshaft
and slide impeller off of shaft.
6. Unbolt adapter/seal plate from motor.
7. Usetwoscrewdrivers(Figure4)orbearingpuller
to carefully separate motor from adapter/seal plate,
bringingrotatinghalfofseal(Ref.10)offwith
adapter/sealplate.Shaftsleeve(Ref.2A)maycome
off with seal.
8. Use hammer, if necessary, to drive shaft sleeve out
of seal. Clean up shaft sleeve with emery paper
ifnecessary.
9. Place adapter/seal plate face down on bench and
drive old stationary half of seal out of adapter/
seal plate by carefully taping with screwdriver and
hammer(Figure5).
10. Use a wire brush to thoroughly clean adapter/seal
platecavity.Besurealldustandgrimeareoutof
seal cavity before installing new seal.
Installing New Seal
1. NOTICE Seal faces are highly polished and lapped.
Handlewithcare.Anymar,nickorscratchonseal
facewillcauseittoleak.BESUREtoinstallwith
polished faces toward each other.
2. Clean polished surface of ceramic seat with
cleancloth.
3. Wet O-ring around ceramic seat with liquid soap.
4. Press stationary (ceramic) half of seal into cavity
firmly and squarely with thumb pressure. If it does
not seal properly, remove and place face up on
bench.Re-cleanadapter/sealplatecavity.Seal
should now seat correctly.
5. If seal does not seat after recleaning adapter/seal
plate cavity, place a cardboard washer over polished
face of seal and carefully press into place using a
pieceof1”standardpipeasapress(Figure6).
NOTICEBESUREyoudonotscratchsealface.
6. Dispose of cardboard washer and recheck seal face
to be sure it is free of dirt, foreign particles, scratches
and grease.
7. Inspect shaft and shaft sleeve to be sure they
areclean.
8. Re-installO-Ring,shaftsleeveandslinger(Ref.4)
onshaft.
NOTICE A small amount of grease or anti-sieze
under shaft sleeve will help prevent shaft and sleeve
from freezing together when pump is in service.
9. Remountadapter/sealplatetomotor,beingcareful
not to scratch seal face.

Troubleshooting
Risk of electric shock. Can shock, burn or kill. To guard against accidental personal injury, the electric
power to the pump should be turned off when conducting the checking procedures outlined. There are obvious
exceptions, however, and service personnel should take necessary safeguards against the hazard of electrical shock.
Problem Probable Cause(s) Remedy
Pump fails to pump. Pump not properly primed. Makesurepumpcasingandsuctionlineare
full of water. See priming instructions.
Pump has reduced
capacity and/or head.
Air pockets or leaks in suction line. Check suction piping.
Clogged impeller. Removeandclean.
Pump loses prime.
Air leaks in suction line. Check suction piping.
Excessivesuctionliftandoperatingtoonear
shut-off point. Movepumpnearertowaterlevel.
Water level drops while pumping,
uncovering suction piping.
Check water supply. Add length of pipe to
suction to keep submerged end under water.
Mechanicaltroubles
and noise.
Bentshaftand/ordamagedbearings. Take motor to authorized motor repair shop.
Suction and/or discharge piping not properly
supported and anchored.
See that all piping is supported to relieve
strain on pump assembly.
10. Apply liquid soap to inside diameter and outside
face of rubber drive ring on rotating half of seal.
11. Slide seal assembly onto shaft sleeve (sealing face
first) far enough so that seal spring is located on
shaftsleeve.
NOTICE Becarefulnottonickcarbonsealface
when passing it over end of shaft sleeve.
12. Slideimpellerandgaskets(Ref.12and11)ontoshaft
withkey(Ref.3)inposition.Besuretomaintain
proper order as shown in Repair Parts.
13. Installwasher,gaskets,andimpellerscrew(Ref.14,
15, 16, 17) on end of shaft and tighten screw until
it is snug. This should locate seal in place and bring
seal faces together.
14. Re-installmotor,adapterandimpellerassemblyon
volute,usingnewgasket(Ref.7).
15. Re-installmotorhold-downbolts.
16. Check all bolts for tightness.
17. Pumpsbelowwaterlevel:Closedrains;open
isolation valves to fill pump. Pumps above water
level:Primepump.Openisolationvalvesifthey
were closed at disassembly.
18. When pump is full, close air vents.
19. Reconnectpowertopumpandsystemisready
foroperation.
