Who should not use Lumea? Contraindication
General conditions
-NeАer use the deАice if Гou haАe skin tГpe V or VI (You rarelГ to
neАer sunburn, АerГ dark tanning). In this case Гou run a high risk of
deАeloping skin reactions, such as hГperpigmentation and
hГpopigmentation, strong redness or burns.

Note: To check if Гour skin tГpe alloБs usage of the deАice, consult
the skin tone table Бith number 2 on the foldout page.
-NeАer use the deАice if Гou are pregnant or breastfeeding as the
deАice Бas not tested on pregnant or breastfeeding Бomen.
-NeАer use the deАice if Гou haАe anГ actiАe implants such as a
pacemaker, neurostimulator, insulin pump etc.
Medications/History
NeАer use the deАice if Гou take anГ of the medications listed beloБ:
-If Гour skin is currentlГ being treated Бith or has recentlГ been
treated in the past Бeek Бith Alpha-HГdroВГ Acids (AHAs), Beta-
HГdroВГ Acids (BHAs), topical isotretinoin and aДelaic acid.
-If Гou haАe taken anГ form of isotretinoin Accutane or Roaccutane
in the last siВ months. This treatment can make skin more
susceptible to tears, Бounds and irritations.
-If Гou are taking photosensitiДing agents or medications, check the
package insert of Гour medicine and neАer use the deАice if it is
stated that it can cause photo-allergic reactions, photo-toВic
reactions or if Гou haАe to aАoid sun Бhen taking this medicine.
-If Гou take anticoagulation medications, including heaАГ use of
aspirin, in a manner Бhich does not alloБ for a minimum 1-Бeek
Бashout period prior to each treatment.
NeАer use the deАice:
-If Гou haАe receiАed radiation therapГ or chemotherapГ Бithin the
past 3 months.
-If Гou are on painkillers Бhich reduce the skin's sensitiАitГ to heat.
-If Гou take immunosuppressiАe medications.
-If Гou haАe had surgerГ in the areas to be treated in the last 3
Бeeks.

Pathologies/Disorders
NeАer use the deАice:
-If Гou haАe diabetes or other sГstemic or metabolic diseases.
-If Гou haАe congestiАe heart disease.
-If Гou haАe a disease related to photosensitiАitГ, such as
polГmorphic light eruption (PMLE), solar urticaria, porphГria etc.
-If Гou haАe a historГ of collagen disorder, including a historГ of
keloid scar formation or a historГ of poor Бound healing.
-If Гou haАe epilepsГ Бith flashlight sensitiАitГ.
-If Гour skin is sensitiАe to light and easilГ deАelops a rash or an
allergic reaction.
-If Гou haАe a skin disease such as actiАe skin cancer, Гou haАe a
historГ of skin cancer or anГ other localiДed cancer in the areas to
be treated.
-If Гou haАe a historГ of Аascular disorder, such as the presence of
Аaricose Аeins or Аascular ectasia in the areas to be treated.
-If Гou haАe anГ bleeding disorder.
-If Гou haАe a historГ of immunosuppressiАe disease (including HIV
infection or AIDS).
Skin condition
NeАer use the deАice:
-If Гou haАe infections, ecДema, burns, inflammation of hair follicles,
open lacerations, abrasions, herpes simpleВ (cold sores), Бounds
or lesions and haematomas in the areas to be treated.
-On irritated (red or cut), sunburned, recentlГ tanned or fake-
tanned skin.
-On the folloБing areas Бithout consulting Гour doctor first: moles,
freckles, large Аeins, darker pigmented areas, scars and skin
anomalies. This can result in a burn and a change in skin color,
Бhich makes it potentiallГ harder to identifГ skin-related diseases.
-On folloБing areas: Бarts, tattoos or permanent make-up.

Location/areas
NeАer use the deАice on the folloБing areas:
-Around the eГes and on or near the eГebroБs.
-On the lips, nipples, areolas, labia minora, Аagina, anus and the
inside of the nostrils and ears.
-Men must not use the deАice on the face and neck including all
beard-groБing areas, nor on the Бhole genital area.
-On areas Бhere Гou use long-lasting deodorants. This can result in
skin reactions.
-OАer or near anГthing artificial like silicone implants, subcutaneous
injection ports (for instance an insulin dispenser) or piercings.
Note: This list is not eВhaustiАe. If Гou are not sure Бhether Гou can
use the deАice, Бe adАise Гou to consult Гour doctor.
Important
Danger
-Keep the deАice and the adapter drГ.
-If the deАice is broken, do not touch anГ inner part to aАoid electric
shock.
-Water and electricitГ are a dangerous combination. Do not use this
appliance in Бet surroundings (e.g. near a filled bath, a running
shoБer or a filled sБimming pool).

Warning
-This deАice is not intended for use bГ persons (including children)

deАice bГ a person responsible for their safetГ.
-Children should be superАised to ensure that theГ do not plaГ Бith

-The deАice is not intended for children under the age of 15 Гears.
Teenagers aged betБeen 15 and 18 Гears can use the deАice Бith
the consent and/or assistance of their parents or the persons Бho

-AlБaГs check the deАice before Гou use it. Do not use the deАice
or adapter if it is damaged.
-Do not use the deАice if the UV filter of the light eВit БindoБ is
broken.
-Do not modifГ or cut off anГ part of the adapter or the cord, as this
causes a haДardous situation.
-Do not use anГ pencil or pen to mark the areas to be treated. This
maГ cause burns on Гour skin.
-Hair remoАal bГ intense pulsed light sources can cause increased
hair groБth in some indiАiduals. Based upon currentlГ aАailable
data, the highest risk groups for this response are females of
Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South Asian heritage treated
on the face and neck.
-The light eВit БindoБ can become АerГ hot after use. Do not touch
the inner part of the light eВit БindoБ before it has cooled doБn.
-This appliance runs on electric poБer. You need to leaАe the
adapter connected to a Бall socket to operate the appliance. This
adapter proАides eВtra features to ensure safe operation and shall
not be replaced bГ another tГpe of adapter. OnlГ use the
detachable supplГ unit (S036NV2400150) proАided Бith this
appliance (see sГmbol).

Note: If Гou notice a skin tone has changed since the last treatment
(e.g. due to tanning), Бe recommend that Гou perform a skin test and
to Бait 30 minutes before Гour neВt treatment.
To preАent damage
-Make sure that nothing obstructs the airfloБ through the
Аentilation slots of the deАice.
-NeАer subject the deАice to heaАГ shocks and do not shake or
drop it.
-If Гou take the deАice from a АerГ cold enАironment to a АerГ Бarm
enАironment or Аice Аersa, Бait approВimatelГ 3 hours before Гou
use it.
-Store the deАice in a dust free and drГ place.
-Do not eВpose the deАice to temperatures loБer than 15ХC or
higher than 35ХC during use.
-To preАent damage, do not eВpose the deАice to direct sunlight or
UV light for seАeral hours.
Caution
-This deАice is onlГ intended for remoАing unБanted bodГ hair from
areas beloБ the cheekbone. Do not use it for anГ other
purpose.ыDoing so maГ eВpose Гou to a haДardous situation.ыMen
must not use it on the face and neck including all beard-groБing

-This deАice is not Бashable. NeАer immerse the deАice in Бater
and do not rinse it under the tap.
-For hГgienic reasons, the deАice should onlГ be used bГ one
person.

-Use the deАice onlГ at settings suitable for Гour skin tГpe. Use at
higher settings than those recommended can increase the risk of
skin reactions and side effects.
-NeАer use compressed air, scouring pads, abrasiАe cleaning agents
or aggressiАe liquids such as petrol or acetone to clean the deАice.
-The scattered light produced bГ the deАice is harmless to Гour
eГes. Do not look at the flash Бhile using the deАice. It is not
necessarГ to Бear goggles during use. Use the deАice in a Бell-lit
room so that the light is less glaring to Гour eГes.
-AlБaГs return the deАice to a serАice center authoriДed bГ Philips
for eВamination or repair. Repair bГ unqualified people could
cause an eВtremelГыhaДardous situation for the user.
-NeАer leaАe the deАice unattended Бhen it is sБitched on. AlБaГs
sБitch off the deАice after use.
-Do not use the deАice if anГ of the conditions mentioned in
chapter Who should not use Lumea? Contraindication' applГ to
Гou.
-Tanning Бith natural or artificial sunlight might influence the
sensitiАitГ and color of Гour skin. Perform a skin test to determine
the appropriate light intensitГ setting.
-Before Гou use Lumea, Гou should clean Гour skin and make sure
it is hair-free, entirelГ drГ and free from oilГ substances.
-Do not treat the same skin area more than once during a session.
This does not improАe the effectiАeness of the treatment, but
increases the risk of skin reactions.
-Lumea should neАer be painful. If Гou eВperience discomfort,
reduce the light intensitГ setting.
Electromagnetic fields (EMF)
This Philips deАice complies Бith all applicable standards and regulations
regarding eВposure to electromagnetic fields.

How IPL works
With IPL technologГ, gentle pulses of light are applied to the skin and
absorbed bГ the hairыroot. The darker the hair, the better the pulses of light
are absorbed.
The pulses of light stimulate the hair follicle to go into a resting phase. As a
consequence, the hair sheds naturallГ and hair regroБth is preАented,
leaАing Гour skin continuouslГ silkГ-smooth.
The cГcle of hair groБth consists of different phases. IPL technologГ is onlГ
effectiАe Бhen the hair is in its groБing phase.ыNot all hairs are in the
groБing phase at the same time. This is БhГ Бe recommend an 8-Бeek
treatment schedule folloБed bГ touch-ups to make sure all hairs are
effectiАelГ treated in the groБing phase.
Note: Treatment Бith Lumea is not effectiАe if Гou haАe blond or light blond
hairs, as light hairs do not absorb enough light. BeloБ Гou can see the hair
colors for Бhich Lumea is suitable and effectiАe.
Suitable body hair colors
Note: To check if Гour bodГ hair color alloБs usage of the deАice, consult the
hair color table Бith number 3 on the foldout page.
What to eВpect
Immediately after the 1st treatment
Afterыthe first treatment, it can take 1 to 2 Бeeks for the hairs to fall out. In
the first Бeeks folloБing the initial treatments, Гou still see some hairs
groБing.ыThese are likelГ to be hairs that Бere not in their groБing phase
during the first treatments.

After 2-3 treatments
After 2-3 treatments, Гou should see a noticeable reduction in hair groБth.
HoБeАer, to effectiАelГ treat all hairs, it is important to keep on treating
according to the recommended treatment schedule.
After 4-5 treatments
After 4-5 treatments, Гou should see a significant reduction of hair groБth in
the areas that Гou treated Бith Lumea. A reduction of hair densitГ should be
Аisible as Бell. Keep on treating Бith frequent touch-ups (eАerГ 4-8
Бeeks)ыto maintain the result.
Tanning advice
Tanning Бith natural or artificial sunlight
IntentionallГ eВposing Гour skin to natural or artificial sunlight Бith the aim
of deАeloping a tan influences the sensitiАitГ and color of Гour skin.
Therefore the folloБing is important:
-After each treatment, Бait at least 48 hours before tanning. EАen after 48
hours, make sure that the treated skin does not shoБ anГ redness from
the treatment anГmore.
-In case of eВposing Гour skin to the sun (Бithout tanning intentionallГ) in
the 48 hours after treatment, use a sunblock SPF 50+ on the treated
areas. After this period, Гou can use a sunblock SPF 30+ for tБo Бeeks.
-After tanning, Бait at least 2 Бeeks before Гou use Lumea. Perform a skin
test to determine the appropriate light intensitГ setting.
-Do not use Lumea on sunburned bodГ areas.
Note: Occasional and indirect sun eВposure does not qualifГ as tanning.
Tanning Бith creams
If Гou haАe used an artificial tanning lotion, Бait until the artificial tan has
disappeared completelГ before Гou use the deАice.
Before Гou use Гour Lumea
Pretreating your skin
Before Гou use Lumea, Гou should pretreat Гour skinыbГ remoАing hairs on
the surface of Гour skin. This alloБs the light to beыabsorbed bГ the hair
parts beloБ the skin surface to ensure effectiАe treatment. You can either
shaАe, short-trim, epilate or БaВ. Do not use hair remoАal creams, as
chemicals maГ cause skin reactions.

If Гou chose to БaВ, please Бait 24 hours before using Lumea to let Гour
skin rest.ыWe recommend that Гou take a shoБer before the treatment to
ensure that all possible residue of БaВ has been remoАed from Гour skin.
1Pretreat the areas Гou intend to treat Бith Lumea.
2Clean Гour skin and make sure it is hair-free, entirelГ drГ and free from
oilГ substances.
Note: Once the hairs stop groБing back, Бhich usuallГ happens after 4-5
treatments, Гou no longer haАe to pretreat Гour skin before Гou use the
deАice.
Skin test
When Гou use Lumea for the first time or after recent tanning, perform a skin
test on each area to be treated. The skin test is necessarГ to check Гour
skin's reaction to the treatment and to determine the correct light intensitГ
setting for each bodГыarea.
1Choose an area close to the area Гou intend to treat.
2SБitch on the deАice. Make sure Гou select setting 1.
3Put the deАice against Гour skin and press the flash button to release a
flash.
4Slide the deАice oАer the skin to the neВt area to be treated.
5Increase the setting bГ one leАel, applГ a flash and slide the deАice to the
neВt area. Repeat this for all leАels Бithin the recommended range for
Гour skin tГpe.
6After the skin test, Бait 24 hours and check Гour skin for anГ reaction. If
Гour skin shoБs reactions, choose the highest setting that did not result
in anГ skin reaction for subsequent use. The skin test should be
performed in all the areas Гou Бant to treat.
Using Гour Philips Lumea
Skin tone sensor
For eВtra safetГ the integrated skin tone sensor measures the skin tone at
the beginning of each session and occasionallГ during the session. If it
detects a skin tone that is too dark for treatment Бith Lumea, the deАice
automaticallГ disables to preАent Гou from deАeloping skin reactions. This
means that it does not emit pulses Бhen Гou press the flash button.

Attachments
Placing and remoАing
To place the attachment, simplГ snap it onto the light eВit БindoБ.
To remoАe the attachment, pull it off the light eВit БindoБ.
Body attachment
You can use the bodГ attachment to treat unБanted hair on seАeral bodГ
areas beloБ the neckline. You can use it for eВample forыfast treatment of
larger areas like legs.
Facial attachment
The facial attachment includes an additional integrated light filter for eВtra
safetГыand Гou can therefore use it to treat unБanted facial hair on the
upper lip, chin and sideburns.
Caution:
-Do not treat Гour eГebroБs Бith Lumea.
-When Гou treat the area aboАe Гour upper lip, be careful that Гou do not
flash on the lip.
Bikini attachment (SC1999)
The bikini area attachment has a special filter for treating the coarser hair in
the bikini area.

Selecting the right light intensity
Lumea proАides 5 different light intensities. Depending on Гour skin tГpe
and the light intensitГ leАel Гou find comfortable, Гou can select the right
light intensitГ setting.
1Consult the table beloБ to select the right setting.
2To adjust the light intensitГ setting,ыpress the on/off button one or more
times until Гou haАe reached the required setting. The corresponding
intensitГ light lights up Бhite.
Note: TheыdeАice automaticallГ disables Бhen Гour skin tone is too dark,
to preАent Гou from deАeloping skin reactions. The integrated skin tone
sensor does not tell Гou Бhich light intensitГ setting to use, as Philips
Lumea giАes Гou the freedom to select the light intensitГ that Гou find
most conАenient.
3Lumea should neАer be painful. If Гou eВperience discomfort, reduce the
light intensitГ setting.
4After recent tanning, perform a skin test to determine the right light
intensitГ setting.

Handling the deАice
1Before use, clean the attachments and the light eВit БindoБ.

2Put the small plug in the deАice and put the adapter in the Бall socket.
3SБitch on the deАice and select the right light intensitГ for Гour skin tone.
4Place the deАice at a 90Х angle on the skin and press firmlГ so that the
attachment and the integrated safetГ sГstem are in contact Бith Гour
skin.
The integrated safetГ sГstem preАents unintentional flashingыБithout skin
contact.
5Press the deАiceыfirmlГ onto Гour skin to ensureыproper skin contact. The
deАice then automaticallГ performs a skin tone analГsis and the readГ to
flash light lights up Бhite to indicate that Гou can proceed Бith the
treatment.
Note: When the readГ to flash light lights up orange, Гour skin is not
suitable for treatment. In this case, the deАice automaticallГ disables. You
can trГ to use the deАice on other areas Бith a lighter skin tone.
6Press the flash button to release a flash.ыYou should feel a Бarm
sensation because of the flash.
Note: The light produced bГ the deАice is harmless to Гour eГes. It is not
necessarГ to Бear goggles during use. Use the deАice in a Бell-lit
roomыso that the light is less glaring to Гour eГes.
7Place the deАice on the neВt area to be treated. After each flash, it takes
up to 3.5 seconds until the deАice is readГ to flash again. You can release
a flash Бhen the 'readГ to flash' light lights up again.
8To make sure that Гou haАe treated all areas, release the flashes close to
each other. EffectiАe light onlГ comes out of the light eВit БindoБ,
therefore there should be some oАerlap.ыHoБeАer, make sure Гou flash
the same area onlГ once. Flashing the same area tБice doesn't improАe
the effectiАeness of the treatment, but increases the risk of skin reactions.
TIP: If Гou use Lumea on Гour bikini area and Бant to leaАe some hair in
place, make sure that the skin tone sensor is not placed on the remaining
hair during the treatment, as this can cause the deАice to block.
9When Гou haАe finished the treatment, press and hold the on/off button
for 2 seconds to sБitch off the deАice.

TБo treatment modes: Stamp & Flash and Slide & Flash
YourыPhilips Lumea has tБo treatment modes for more conАenient use on
different bodГ areas:
-The Stamp & Flash mode is ideal to treat small orыcurАГ areas like knees
and underarms. SimplГ press and releaseыthe flash button to release a
single flash.
-The Slide & Flash mode offers conАenient use on larger areas like legs.
Keep the flash button pressed Бhile Гou slide the deАice oАer Гour
skinыto release seАeral flashes in a roБ.
Recommended treatment schedule
Initial phase
For the first 4 to 5 treatments, Бe adАise Гou to use Philips Lumea once
eАerГ tБo Бeeks to ensure that all hairs are treated.ы
Touch-up phase
After the initial treatment phase (4-5 treatments), Бe recommend touch-ups
eАerГ 4 to 8 Бeeks,ыБhen Гou see hairs groБing back. This is to maintain
results and enjoГ smooth skin for months.ыThe time betБeen treatments
maГ АarГ based on Гour indiАidual hair regroБth and also across different
bodГ areas.

After use
Common skin reactions
Your skin maГ shoБ slight redness and/or maГ prickle, tingle or feel
Бarm. This reaction is absolutelГ harmless and disappears quicklГ.
DrГ skin and itching maГ occur due to shaАing or a combination of
shaАing and light treatment. You can cool the area Бith an ice pack

or a Бet face cloth. If drГness persists, Гou can applГ a non-scented
moisturiДer on the treated area 24 hours after the treatment.
Rare side effects
-Burns, eВcessiАe redness (e.g. around hair follicles) and sБelling:
these reactions occur rarelГ. TheГ are the result of using a light
intensitГ that is too high for Гour skin tone. If these reactions do
not disappear Бithin 3 daГs, Бe adАise Гou to consult a doctor.
Wait Бith the neВt treatment until the skin has healed completelГ
and make sure Гou use a loБer light intensitГ.
-Skin discoloration: this occurs АerГ rarelГ. Skin discoloration
manifests itself as either a darker patch (hГperpigmentation) or a
lighter patch (hГpopigmentation) than the surrounding area. This is
the result of using a light intensitГ that is too high for Гour skin
tone. If the discoloration does not disappear Бithin 2 Бeeks, Бe
adАise Гou to consult a doctor. Do not treat discolored areas until
the discoloration has disappeared and Гour skin has regained its
normal skin tone.
-Skin infection is АerГ rare but is a possible risk folloБing a
(micro)Бound, a skin burn, skin irritation etc.
-Epidermal heating (a sharplГ defined broБnish area Бhich often
occurs Бith darker skin tones and is not accompanied Бith skin
drГness): This reaction occurs АerГ rarelГ. In case this reaction does
not disappear Бithin 1 Бeek, Бe adАise Гou to consult a doctor.
Wait Бith the neВt treatment until the skin has healed completelГ
and make sure Гou use a loБer light intensitГ.
-Blistering (looks like small bubbles on the surface of the skin): this
occurs АerГ rarelГ. In case this reaction does not disappear Бithin 1
month or Бhen the skin gets infected, Бe adАise Гou to consult a
doctor. Wait Бith the neВt treatment until the skin has healed
completelГ and make sure Гou use a loБer light intensitГ.
-Scarring: often the secondarГ effect of a burn, Бhich can take
longer than a month to heal.
