Pioneer DRM-5004X CD-ROM Jukebox User’s Guide
TP #120 v .1.0 2/95 1 - 1
1. Overview of the DRM-5004X
This chapter provides an overview of the Pioneer DRM-5004X CD-ROM
Jukebox and its components.
CAUTION: Before using this unit, please refer to page ix for basic Safety
Precautions and familiarize yourself with this entire DRM-5004X CD-ROM
Jukebox User’s Guide. See
Chapter 3 for instructions on Setting Up the
DRM-5004X.
1.1 About the DRM-5004X
The DRM-5004X is a 500 disc CD-ROM jukebox. It has the capacity
to hold 500 CD-ROM, CD-DA, CD-R or CD-ROM XA discs and to select
any one of them for playback at speeds up to 4X. With a Pioneer CD-R
Writer installed, the unit can also write to CD-R discs.
The DRM-5004X contains four drive bays accessible through the front
lower side of the unit. It typically ships with two 4x speed Pioneer
CD-ROM Readers installed in two upper drive bays. The two additional
lower drive bays can accommodate optional Pioneer CD-ROM Readers
(DR-D504X) or Pioneer CD-ROM Writers (DR-R504X).
NOTE: Any combination of Pioneer CD-ROM Readers and or Writers can
be installed in the four drive bays. Install the drives in consecutve drive
bays, starting with drive bay one.
In the default configuration, the drive units and the changer mecha-
nism are daisy chained on one SCSI bus within the unit. Drives may
be addressed on individual SCSI buses, but they then are not linked
to the changer mechanism. When a drive is connected on its own sep-
arate SCSI bus, it functions essentially as a stand-alone reader or
writer, accessing only a single disc.
The DRM-5004X is dependent on computer control. Numerous third
party developers have written software to control the DRM-5004X from
many different computer platforms. Refer to Pioneer Product
Information Bulletin #25,produced by Pioneer New Media
Technologies, Inc. Engineering Support, or order LaserFacts
Document #34 026.See Appendix E, Pioneer Technical Resource
Numbers.

1.1.1 The Changer Mechanism
The DRM-5004X changer mechanism includes mechanical elements
that provide for vertical, swing, slide, grasping and clamping motions.
See Section 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 of this chapter for information about
Mechanical Initialization and Operation Flow.
1.1.2 Disc Storage
The disc storage section of the unit consists of 5 magazines that can
each hold up to 100 discs. CD-ROM discs can be loaded into each
magazine manually. The entire magazine is inserted or removed from
the front of the unit.
1.1.3 Magazines
Each magazine includes a green shipping plate which should be
inserted whenever the magazine is loaded with discs and moved.
Remove the shipping plate from each magazine after it is inserted into
the DRM-5004X or the unit will not initialize. Store the shipping
plates inside the front door panel for re-use when the magazines are
removed. Magazines should be installed from the bottom of the unit
first. If space for a magazine is not filled, but left empty, discs in the
upper magazines cannot be accessed. See Chapter 2, Features
,for
more details.
CAUTION: NEVER SHIP OR TRANSPORT THE DRM-5004X CD-ROM
JUKEBOX WITH MAGAZINES INSERTED. Also, do not store or ship
magazines with discs loaded.
1.1.4 The Drive Bays
There are four drive bays in the bottom section of the DRM-5004X.
A unit typically ships with two 4x speed Pioneer CD-ROM Readers
(DR-D504X) installed in the two upper drive bays. See Chapter 3,
Setting Up the DRM-5004X — Basic Two Reader Configuration.
Any combination of up to four Pioneer CD-ROM Readers or Pioneer
CD-ROM Writers can be ordered and installed as optional equipment.
See Chapter 4, Custom Configuration.
CAUTION: Only Pioneer CD-ROM Readers or Writers can be installed
and used in the DRM-5004X.
Overview

Pioneer DRM-5004X CD-ROM Jukebox User’s Guide TP #120 v .1.0 2/95 1 - 3
1.1.5 The Pioneer CD-ROM Reader
The Pioneer CD-ROM reader DR-D504X is a 4X speed CD-ROM drive
and includes audio outputs for CD-DA. (When digital audio is present,
the drive automatically outputs audio at single speed.) On the rear
panel, there are also four sets of stereo audio outputs, one for each of
up to four drives installed. Each CD-ROM reader within the unit is
assigned its own specific SCSI ID address on a SCSI chain and is
controlled by SCSI commands sent from a host computer.
1.1.6 The Pioneer CD-ROM Writer
The 4x speed Pioneer CD-ROM Writer (DR-R504X) is also available as
an option. The writer can write data to CD-Recordable (Write Once)
discs (CD-R discs) at 4X speed or 2X speed. When the writer is
installed in the DRM-5004X, it is usually addressed independently on
its own SCSI chain so writing a CD-R disc can take place without
interruption.
1.1.7 SCSI Connections
There are a total of five SCSI ID Setting Switches on the rear panel of
the unit: one to set the SCSI address of each drive installed and one
to set the SCSI address of the changer mechanism. There are six SCSI
connectors on the rear panel. Typically, when the unit is shipped, the
controller and installed Pioneer CD-ROM readers are daisy chained
starting at SCSI Port A. The SCSI chain is terminated by placing the
terminator block, included as an accessory, on SCSI Port B.
1.1.8 Connecting Drives on Separate SCSI buses
Internal drives can also be connected to separate SCSI buses using
the other SCSI connectors on the rear of the the unit. For example,
when one CD-R writer is added, it can be connected to an unused
SCSI connector on a separate SCSI bus to assure there are no inter-
ruptions while writing data to a CD-R disc. Refer to instructions in
Section 4.6, Custom Configuration.

1.1.9 Setting SCSI Termination
Only the first and last device in a SCSI chain should be terminated.
In a basic two-reader configuration, the computer’s host adapter card
is terminated and the SCSI Termination Block included with the unit
is placed on SCSI Port B of the unit. The SCSI termination of each
CD-ROM Reader is set to OFF when it is shipped; the CD-R Writers
are shipped with SCSI termination ON. Termination can be set using
DIP switches on the right front side of each drive. See Chapter 2,
Features for details.
1.1.10 Reading Data from Discs
First a disc is selected from the disc tray, transported to a specific
DR-D504X CD-ROM Reader, placed into the reader and clamped into
place. This sequence is controlled by SCSI commands sent from the
host computer to the CD-ROM Jukebox. Next, the host computer
selects the SCSI ID of the drive unit containing the disc. It then sends
CD-ROM commands to read data from the disc. If a DOS machine is
used as a host computer there will be two or three device drivers
installed, one for the Jukebox, one for CD-ROM Readers and one for
CD-R Writers. For other computer operating systems, consult with
specific software vendors.
1.1.11 Writing Data to Discs
A disc is selected from the disc tray, transported to the DR-R504X
CD-R writer, placed into the writer and clamped into place. This
sequence is controlled by SCSI commands sent from the host computer
to the CD-ROM jukebox. The host computer indicates the SCSI ID of
the drive unit, then sends commands to write data to the selected disc.
Consult with specific software vendors for more information about
writing CD-R discs. See Pioneer Product Information Bulletin #25,
Third Party Driver Developers. This document is also available on
the Pioneer LaserFacts System as number 31 025.See Appendix E,
Pioneer Technical Resource Numbers.

1.2 Basic Operation and Movements of the Unit
The basic operation of the unit and movements of internal compo-
nents are described in the sections below.
1.2.1 Mechanical Initialization
When the power of the DRM-5004X is turned on, mechanical initial-
ization is started when the front door is closed and disc magazines
are properly seated and their shipping plates are removed. During
initialization, the green LED, located on the top front panel, flashes.
After initialization is completed, the green LED stops flashing and
remains lit continuously.
Mechanical movements during initialization are as follows:
1. The slider mechanism and swing arm are moved to a
horizontally centered position on the disc transport.
2. The disc transport is lowered to the bottom of the unit.
NOTE: The slider mechanism and the swing arm must be centered,
and all disc magazines must be correctly inserted before any vertical
movement within the changer can take place.
NOTE: If the front door is opened during initialization, mechanical
movement is stopped immediately. After the door is closed, initializa-
tion can be resumed by powering off and then powering on the unit.
Position of the disc magazines and the presence or absence of shipping
plates is checked by infra-red (IR) sensing. There is a small hole in the
front center section of each magazine. IR sensors are located above
and below the hole. If the magazine position is not correct, or if a ship-
ping plate is inserted into the magazine, IR is not detected by the sen-
sors and initialization of the unit will not take place.
If the front door is opened during normal operation, the control CPU
for the changer mechanism stops all movement and returns an error
message to its host computer. When the door is closed after this, no
mechanical movement is resumed. Either the unit must be powered
OFF and then powered ON again, or the host computer must send a
command to return all mechanical elements and discs to their origi-
nal or center position.

1.2.2 Operation flow: Moving a disc from a magazine to a drive
Here are the mechanical steps that occur when the DRM-5004X is
sent commands to select a specific disc from one of the magazines
and to place it into a specified drive unit.
1. The disc transporter is moved vertically to disc location.
2. The swing motor is rotated to face a disc in either the left or
right side of the magazine.
3. The arm is extended to a disc (slider movement).
4. A disc is grasped.
5. The arm is retracted (slider movement).
6. A swing motor with disc is returned to center position.
7. The disc transporter is moved to drive position.
9. A disc is grasped.
8. The swing motor is rotated to face a drive.
10. The arm is extended to place disc in drive.
11. The disc is released and placed in the drive.
12. The arm is retracted.
13. The swing motor is rotated back to the center position.
NOTE: The disc transporter will not move to select another disc
unless the swing arm is centered.
