1 Introduction
1.1 Scope of Manual
This manual provides Installation and Operating information on the model 7RSP1Radio
Synthesizer Panel which is a component subassembly of the Model RCU-5500 Radio
Communication Unit. The RCU-5500 operates as part of a Load Management Control System
under the control of QUICS IV Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System
manufactured by QEI, 45 Fadem Road, Springfield, New Jersey 07081.
1.2 Description
The 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer Panel is constructed on a large, printed circuit board measuring
10.5 inches by 9.5 inches. The panel is designed to be mounted inside of various cabinets.
1.3 Purpose
The 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer Panel is controlled by an external Central Processing Panel which
has received downloaded information from a QEI Master Station. The 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer
Panel performs a number of functions; it sets a transmission protocol keys the radio transmitter and
modulates the transmitter with data it received from the Central Processing Panel. The 7RSP1
Radio Synthesizer Panel contains a tone generator and performs control functions as well. When
the Request to Send (RTS) signal from the ASCII/external modem port on the Central Processing
Panel is set, data is transmitted to the 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer Panel. The data is processed and
converted to the protocol used by the radio receiver. Once the radio has been keyed, the data is
then sent to the radio transmitter in the form of Frequency Shift Keying (FSK). An
acknowledgement signal ACK is sent by the 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer Panel back to the Central
Processing Panel upon receipt of control information. This resets the Central Processing Panel so
that further information can be sent. Outputs on the 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer Panel can be set for
different impedances and output levels.

2.3 Equipment Location
2.3.1 Environment
The 7RSP1 RadioSynthesizerPanel
is
designedto operate over an environmental
temperature range of-30°C to
70°C,
and thestorage temperature limits are
much wider
(equipment may besafely stored from-55°C to
+85°C).
2.4 Interconnecting Wiring
The 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer Panel which is normally part
of
the Model
RCU-5500
Radio Communication Unit is wired and connected at the factory. Connectors Jl
and J2 are plug in connectors to other electronic subassemblies. When replacing
a 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer Panel, these connectors are simply inserted into the
Panel connectors.
2.4.1 External Wiring
The following paragraphs provide information on connecting
TerminalBlockTBl.
2.4.2 RadioControl Lines
Normally, all radio circuit control lines have been factory set to operate with a
specific type of radio which requires a specific tone level and impedance. In the
event it is required to change the impedance setting or output levels, proceed as
follows:
Terminal board TB1 on the 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer Panel contains the
termination point for all external radio connections. Refer to the following
paragraphs for information regarding these connections. Refer to the
Interconnection diagrams supplied with your system.
When using the keying relays in the 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer Panel, the keying
voltage must be between 0 and +50 V de, load must be non-reactive, and current
must be less than 300 mA. The transmitters may also be keyed directly by
transistor outputs, without the use of the isolation relays.
There are two independent, isolated and floating tone outputs. Each has a low
and a high terminal. Use tone output #1 to drive a single transmitter, or to drive
the first of two transmitters. Use tone output #2 for the second trans-mitter. If
these outputs drive a balanced 600 ohm line, use standard telephone grade,
twisted pair wire to connect the output high and the output low lines to the
transmitter line input. Polarity is not important for a balanced 600 ohm line.
If these outputs drive the transmitter microphone input, then use single conductor
shielded cable Connect the shield to output low and center conductor to output
high. Only one end of the shield (low line) must be grounded, and that must be
at the transmitter end of the line.

3 Operating Instructions
3.1 Operation
The 7RSP1 Radio Synthesizer Panel does not contain any operating controls
which require a user's interface. The panel, when installed in a system, operates
unattended. Turn on and turn off procedures usually involve controls associated
with a power supply which is part of the system.
