Quanser QNET User manual

Quick Start Guide: QNET Mechatronic Interfacing
To complete your QNET Mechatronic Interfacing setup, you will also need the following hardware:
1. Quanser QNET Mechatronic Interfacing board
2. CAN bus loopback cable
3. SD card

STEP 1
Make sure your QNET Mechatronic Interfacing experiment includes the following components:

Make sure the following versions of LabVIEW™ and required add-ons are installed:
1. LabVIEW™ 2013 or later
2. NI DAQmx 9.8 or later
3. NI ELVISmx 4.5 or later
Note: The QNET curriculum resources are

2. +5VDC / 5A, +15VDC / 2A,

Note: All references to NI ELVIS II in
this guide apply to both NI ELVIS II
and NI ELVIS II+ devices.

Set up the Hardware
STEP 4
Ensure that the NI ELVIS II power switch is
in the OFF position.

Place the handle on the front of the QNET
board over the bracket located on the front
of the NI ELVIS II.
Slide the PCI connector at the back of the
QNET board into the female connector on
the NI ELVIS II.
To set up the QNET Mechatronic Interfacing, please read the following instructions carefully. For full details, see
the QNET Mechatronic Interfacing User Manual.
Connect the NI ELVIS II power supply to the
back panel of the NI ELVIS II.
Use the NI ELVIS II USB cable to connect the
NI ELVIS Unit to your computer.

FPower on the NI ELVIS II using the power switch
on the back of the unit. The READY and ACTIVE
LEDs on the top NI ELVIS II panel should briey
light, and the READY LED stays on.

Make sure your PC,
NI ELVIS II, and QNET
board are powered ON.
Open the Quick Start folder from the Mechatronic Interfacing
folder in the QNET Resources. The QNET Resources are available
for download from www.ni.com/qnets.

Click on the STOP button to stop running the VI.
Click on the
white arrow
to run the VI.
Open the LabVIEW VirtuaI Instrument (*.vi)
found under the Quick Start folder.
Adjusting the position of
any of these sensors should
cause the associated value
to change both on the graph
and in the light output of the
LED. Otherwise, consult the
troubleshooting section at
the end of this guide.
Testing the QNET Mechatronic Interfacing

Ensure that the
ELVIS +5V LED
on the QNET
board are lit.
Power on the QNET Mechatronic Interfacing board by
turning the NI ELVIS II prototyping board power switch.
The POWER LED next to the switch should light up.
The LCD screen should display
the Quanser and National
Instruments logos. If the LCD
shows a blank screen or another
image, please contact Quanser’s
technical support team.

DSelect the device name
that matchs your NI
ELVIS II device as shown in the
NI Measurement & Automation
Explorer in the Device control.
The graph displays
the output intensity
of the tri-color LED,
calculated from the
position of the
accelerometer,
potentiometer, and
the left hand encoder.

Register your QNET board at https://www.qnetregistration.com to recieve regular product updates.
The +5V Power
LED on the QNET
board is not lit.
One or more of
the values on
the graph do not
update when
the sensor is
perturbed.
•Ensure that the PCI connector on the QNET board is properly connected to the
female connector on the NI ELVIS II unit.
•Check that the system power switch, located on the back panel of the NI ELVIS II unit,
and the prototyping board power switch, situated on the top of the ELVIS are ON.
•Ensure the cable connecting the accelerometer board to the main board is securely
in place.
•Stop the Quick Start VI. Press the SYSTEM RESET button on the QNET board and
then repeat the test.
•Switch the NI ELVIS II main power switch to OFF and wait for 5-10 seconds before
switching it ON. Repeat the test.
